Q: I had heard about one year ago, talk of making a feature film of I Dream of Jeannie. Is this movie going to come out, or was this just a big rumor?
A: There is indeed a big screen version in the works. It has been talked about for several years now, but bits and pieces still come up about the ongoing project, which I believe has not yet been scripted to the producers' satisfaction.
Q: I had heard that Alicia Silverstone would play Jeannie, as ridiculous as that is...
A: Yes, that is ridiculous, she is much too young. No worries, Alicia Silverstone will NOT be playing Jeannie, this rumor was started by gossip columnists who were imagining their own casting picks, at the time Alicia was one of the Hollywood "it" girls. Other girls mentioned at the time were Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe Buffet on "Friends") and Cameron Diaz ("The Mask", and "Something About Mary")
Jeannie was not going to be played by Barbara Eden. Barbara Eden was asked early on to appear as Jeannie's mother. Barbara herself is hoping to create an older version of Jeannie II and invent a role of a wicked Aunt. While the character never existed in the series, it could help explain where Jeannie II got some of her nasty genie genes.
Q: If it is a reality, who will be playing Jeannie and Maj. Nelson?
A: The latest word that I've heard, from a fairly recent Entertainment Weekly issue was that the producer was very enthusiastic about the new prime time Jeannie-esque Jenna Elfman of "Dharma and Greg" fame. Of all the choices, I think she would be the best pick by far, she's got the look, and it wouldn't be much of a stretch from her current role of Dharma. The role of Major Nelson has never been directly addressed, but Tom Hanks name has been noted twice, I would've agreed ten years ago. While no specific names come to mind, there are plenty of fresh young faces appearing in Hollywood on a regular basis. I'm sure there's a long list of available hunks that would love to find a buxom blond servant on a deserted island! They'll all be fighting for that role!
