The front page of the second section

of the Commercial Appeal dated 10-8-93,

in the lower left handcorner

sports a photograph of an overturned vehicle

on Cooper just north of where it intersects

with Madison Avenue in Overton Square.

On that southwest corner lot,

I was cutting grass just a foot from the sidewalk...

haveing just begun, and my very best Buddy

of all times, Mr.Stan Melton was standing

on the very corner there edging the corner curb

of overgrown grass.

It was a ten dollar yard and it would have been fine

with the owner just to have cut it and been done with,

but StanMan, being such an elitist and

perfectionist, had to make sure the owner got his ten bucks worth,

so the property always looked like it had jumped off

the cover of Better Homes and Gardens.

Racing down Cooper heading north, the female driver

fainted at the wheel, and her car came up on the sidewalk,

grazeing me, and I turned to see it hit Stan front and center,

knocking him out of his tennis shoes and into the street.

I was afraid to leave him to die alone and did not

run to a phone but instead yelled "HELLLLLP!!!" with all

my might over and over until the lady running the

costume shop across the street came stumbling out.

My screams would have made Tarzan's yell seem like

something out of a Chipmunk's Sing-a-long cartoon special

preceeding Sesame Street.

One hour later at the Elvis Presely Trauma Center

Stan received the greatest giftof all...freedom..

through what we historically call death,

but what he taught me through our friendship

that there is no such thing as death..

we are all one day just suddenly simple FREE.

He recorded in the 60's and received a Gold Record for his

rendition of BORN FREE,

and was the first to sing and introduce to the world

the song titled The Peace Song...

LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME,

as he toured the world with the United Nations Children's Choir.

I recall seeing glossy 8x10's of him and the

children from abroad on the steps of the Capitol

Building in Washington D.C. and other notable and historic landmarks.

I, on the other hand received what I thought to be at the time,

a remaining lifetime of remorse,

horrorish nightmares.

Over a year later..

Watching the sunrise on the edges of Rainbow Lake in Overton Park,

writing a story for my Yahoo Group titled

Rick REED Rash Riot Reader 2001,

I realized it was close to time for me to

head towards the Madison Avenue Branch

of Union Planters Bank where for years I have entered upon

opening and shared coffee with my friends,

employees there ...till the customers overwhelmed us ....

and they had to go to work, and I had to go to....what....just go.

Walking South on Cooper, I realized,

"Oh, NO!! I have to pass through THAT CORNER again again."

My thoughts raced, rambled and finding myself on Madison,

I saw a wooden bench and decided to sit and take notes

in my journal of something I thought was brilliant

(for me at any rate)

so that I would not loose the thought.

Suddenly I realized I had passed "that corner" without

knowing it.

Going back, retraceing my steps,

I could not recall where the exact corner was,

and had to ask someone if they knew or remembered.

A young man said "Yes, it was right there",

pointing to the corner just a few feet from me.

I was RIGHT THERE !

He said he had moved in just recently but had heard

about the accident immediatley upon moving in.

I headed on to the bank, had my coffee,

then headed west towards downtown to

the Cosset Library where I hang out for hours in

the day playing on the Internet and fellowshioping with

my friends, employees there.

I decided to stop and visit the waiting room

at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center

where I had waited alone for almost an hour

for Stan to die.

I explained to an employee there what iwanted to do....

sit in that room, feeeel great, and end the nightmare.

I did just that, sitting there, taking notes for this story you read now.

Now,whenever I think of that weird shaped room,

it will be the last memory of being there...

of feeling joy, a sense of independance..freedom.

I feel like I am no longer over the rainbow,

but at the bottom of the other side,

looking back ready to live again.

Got a life to live, and a laugh to fill.

LATER NOTE/AMMENDMENT: 07-30-2004

I had thought the nightmare was over when I frist wrote this story.

The Nightmare finally ended 8 years to the date of the accident

while standing in NYC watching the World Trade Center still smoking.

I realized that thousands had died there, and My Fiend was one man.

The Light That shines in the darkness....

GOD.. that is always present....in ALL...

in everything ....WAS there for me that moment, as I left NYC...

Know that there is one shred of good in every tragedy...

as God IS All............He is that light in the darkness,

even then..for me....as I had blamed myself for Stan's death.

I had been an hour late meeting him there on

the corner, and for eight years thought that HAD I been on time

he would still be alive.

SO, not only in the events of 9/ll..but in any situation

of discomfort...I look at it and think...

"All it takes for me is to see one person

in a worst situation or less fortunate than myself

for whatever reason....

and I KNOW that I AM going to make it...

It allmost drove me crazy
