Of course, I am a vegan and have been for almost 13 years.
I always thought the most likely charcter on F&G to be veg
would be Lindsay. She had that kind of anti-establishment,
deep caring, social responsibilty, type personality. She would be the
type to do it for the environment and the animals. I think Bill could
also have ended up veg because, although his motivation would be
different. He would be going vegan from a health aspect. He has so many
alergies that he would find a lot relief from a vegan diet.
Most people don't realize that the best way to beat alergies
is to give up dairy products. It's not 100% but it is the best
first thing to try. Also, maybe Mr. Rosso was a vegetarian.

The "Walk this Way" category earlier this week reminded me that we have been
subjected to a number of really lame remakes of classic tunes over the years.
Unfortunately, the '80s gave us quite a few:<P>Kim Wilde gave us a note-for-note
copy of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On." Anything for a hit, right,
Kim?<P>I know that many of you like Joan Jett, but you must admit that her
rendition of "Crimson and Clover" could not hold a candle to the original by
Tommy James and the Shondells.<P>Tommy James also saw his hits, "I Think We're
Alone Now" done by Tiffany, and "Mony Mony" butchered by Billy Idol.<P>But
Tiffany did not stop with Tommy James and the Shondells. She also did a
laughable cover version of the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" (with the
"her" changed to "him" of course.)<P>But while there were a slew of lame remakes
in the '80s, they didn't stop in the '80s. Britney Spears has now taken on
"Satisfaction" by the Stones.<P>And let us not forget the "lame remake queen,"
LeeAnn Rimes. She must be trying to perfect her Vegas lounge lizard act. Her
list of cover tunes includes "Unchained Melody," "You Light Up My Life,"
"Yesterday," and even "Purple Rain." Let's not forget that she was on the
"Today" show not too long ago singing, "Me and Bobby McGee." The line in that
song where she sang "we sang every song that driver knew" just did not ring true
to me with her singing it.<P>I'm sure there are others. Feel free to add your
own favorites (or should I say, least favorites) to the list.

Okay, if we're going there alone, how many bad remakes of "Satisfaction" can

1) Devo
2) Justine Bateman in the movie by the same name

Greetings.

It is I. Paul Feig. Where the heck have I been? Well, I've been
struggling with a little network they call Fox, the people that brought
you such genius shows as Temptation Island and ... well, Temptation
Island. And what have I been doing with them? Trying to get my new
show, Ludlow Residence, into production. Here's the lowdown.

I wrote the pilot, and then rewrote it and rewrote it based on Fox
notes that were, basically, telling me they didn't want anything that
felt like Freaks and Geeks (which my show didn't, other than the fact
that it was about people acting like real people). Well, I finished
the final version and kept the integrity I wanted and everybody loved
the script except the head of the network, who has kept expressing his
"reservations" about it (sound familiar? Hello, Garth?). Bottom line,
they want a big, crazy show like "Malcolm in the Middle," with over the
top characters and wild camera angles. Now, don't get me wrong, that
works for Malcolm and I admire what they do but as you know, that's not
the style of show I do. Well, my script has been languishing at Fox
for a month now, with Fox saying that they're not sure they even want
to do a one hour family comedy show. And so, I've been sitting and
waiting to get my show going for basically months now (I turned in
previous drafts that they wouldn't approve).

So, that's where I've been. I'm about to direct a feature film if the
pilot doesn't go but it's a shame because I really like my pilot and
think it would be quite good if they gave me a chance. It still might
go, but things are looking a bit bleak at the moment. I'm hoping I'll
write you all in the next week and tell you that everything's fine but
there's a chance I won't. Bottom line (I said that already, didn't I?)
is that Fox just doesn't get the style of show that either myself or
Judd do. They like over the top nuttiness and, as they've said
themselves, nothing that feels like Freaks and Geeks. So, why did they
make deals with Judd and I?

Who the heck knows????

Anyway, that's my rant. I'm bummed because so many people have read
the new pilot and love it that it's driving me crazy that they won't
make it. So, I'm writing at a down moment. Don't let it throw you.
I'll be fine. I'm writing a movie for Scott Rudin and getting ready to
direct another, so things are good. It's just a drag, that's all.

Well, that's what's up. I just wanted to touch base with you all and
say "hi." I'm hoping that I'll post some better news this week. I
hope this post didn't seem too pathetic and whiny

Hope you're all well!
Paul Feig

I am not a vegetarian, but I DO eat many veggie products. I've eaten soy
burgers and Garden burgers. While I didn't really care for the soy burgers, the
Garden Burgers were okay because, to me, they weren't a beef substitute, but
rather a replacement. While I DO still eat meat, I try to substitute with more
healthy products whenever possible. I started cooking with ground turkey rather
than ground beef, then went to soy ground round. If you don't like the taste of
soy meats, you can substitute soy ground round for ground beef in chili, taco
sauce, and spaghetti sauce, and you won't be able to taste the difference. It's
a good place to start if you don't think you'll like the taste of soy meats. I
also use soy cold cuts and cheeses in my sandwiches that I take to work for my
lunch. I also take apples and bananas and raisins instead of getting junk food
out of the machines. But I haven't stopped there. I am drinking more bottled
water, even with meals, and I am trying to, as much as possible, eliminate
caffeine from my diet. I am also trying to eliminate as many man-made chemicals
as possible. I try to use shampoos and toothpastes that don't contain chemicals
like propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulfate. These are known carcinogens.
Read the labels! Even the ones sold at health-food stores sometimes contain
this stuff! And it goes without saying, I don't drink or smoke.

Apparently, html does not work on this board, at least if you post from a webtv.
This is part of the reason why I do not post over here very often. Sorry if my
messages are hard to read. html did not work in my "lame remakes" message, so I
didn't even bother trying to put html codes in my reply to the "vegetarianism"

email me with advice about it. It sucks that I cannot put in paragraph breaks.

Hi Paul,

As always I am sure we are all thrilled to hear from you!
It is a great surprise to see one of your posts here when you
get a some extra time.

I also wanted to say I hope Fox turns around and ends up televising
your show. We have all been waiting for it. It's funny you posted today
because I just watched an excellent movie on HBO called "Dancing in
September" which was about this man and woman who get into TV and one
kind of sells out his integrity and the other is strong but sells out
and then ends up re-embracing her integrity. So when I read your post
right after seeing this movie, I was like, WOW!!, I just saw a movie
that showed how they made this wonderful writer do one rewrite after
another until see had a piece of sell out crap. It sounds like you have
held strong on your artistic integrity and I am sure in the TV business
that is very difficult to do. Anyway BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!! I mean it is
expected you will have to make compromises but try to stay strong.
Whatever you do, you should know we all love you and are excited to
hear about anything you have a hand in.

Take care,

Hi Joel,

I just wanted to applaud you on making an effort to improve your diet.
It is a very difficult thing for most people to do. Although I am a
vegan I still eat way too much cooked food and am trying to eat more
raw fruits and veggies. Any effort you make is great. BTW: I think the
best soy burger on the market is the vegan Boca Burger. It is a very
good mock burger and is very low in fat, no cholesterol and tastes
quite good. It is sold in regualr markets everywhere. If anyone gets it
make sure to get the "vegan original" as the others have dairy in them.
I have spent many years reseaching health issues since becoming a vegan
almost 13 years ago and I can tell everyone that the one thing you
should give up, if you are going to give up just one thing would be
dairy products. That's right I said dairy products. Although beef, fish
and poultry are not healthful foods, dairy is actually worse. Me, I
gave up flesh products first for my own personal, ethical reasons, but
later I found out dairy products were also very inhumane and even more
surprisingly, worse, healthwise than flesh products. If you are
intersted in a good book about health and the environment as it relates
to our diet get the book, The Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman.

Gee Paul, that sucks. Why would Fox want another Malcolm when it has
the original? I like Malcolm, but a whole primetime chock full of it
would make me put my TiVo in storage. With the impending strike, we
may already have a whole season of Temptation Islands next year. I
shudder to think.

Would it be helpful for us to write to Fox and tell them we, as
middle class, twenty - fourtysomethings (for the most part) with
large disposable incomes would love to see your one hour family
comedy? I'm sure plenty of us would be willing to do this for ya.

Paul, It's great to hear updates from
you, even when the news is not so good. Hang tough on this.... you know it's
good, everybody at Fox, except their version of Garth, likes it. We can't let the
Garth's of the world decide what we will watch. I know this is easy for me to
say--- it's not my time and money on the line. Eventually it will catch up with
the Fox Garth, just lie it did at NBC. Stand by your script as is. I know we are
dealing with the TV biz, but quality should win in the end. History shows what
happened with shows like "All in the Family" being rejected by one network, only
to become a huge hit on another. Retain the rights (if you can). If Fox says no,
then shop it around. If it doesn't work for TV, maybe it will work on the big
screen. You proved yourself with F&G, regardless of the ratings. Hey, you still
have a bunch of us out here begging to see "Life Sold Seperately". Anyway, good
luck to you. I hope they are more open minded with Judd's project- "Undeclared".
You guys always have your own cult following right here!

Hi Paul,

I can't tell you enough how much I admire you so much for sticking by
your creation.  That says a lot about you and your visions.   Fox has zany
out shows and yes Malcolm is pretty good, but I believe TV needs a variety of
different styles of programming, not exact replicas of what's hot at the
moment.  Remember the "millionaire" replica's.  Where are they now?  Why make
another Malcolm?  People will start comparing it and then both shows would
get hurt.   The uniqueness that seperates it from the other shows is gone,
because there are two shows like it.  Freaks and Geeks was a different style,
a style loved by all of us here.  The critics loved it.  It was real.  We all
related to it.  It was different, and given the chance, could have been right
on top.  If Garth was smart, I would have had Freaks and Geeks Thursday
nights on Must See TV by now.  Lately, everyone seems to be afraid to try
something new.  Where are the people who want to air good programming?  Not
copies of the "original" programming.  Fox is fourth in the ratings.  I
wonder why?  Try something new!

I wish the best to you Paul.  I hope your visions come true and Ludlow goes
into production.  I can't wait to see another Paul Feig series.  As for your
feature film, keep us informed of what's going on.  We don't ever think
you're whining...you're just telling us what's going on!  Thanks for
remembering us.  You know we all support you and your work.  We're still here
aren't we?  How many egourp/yahoo mail listings are there about shows that
are now gone?  Let me rephrase that...GOOD shows that are now gone?  Well, I
think I am ranting now. doh!  Take care Paul.

I agree, I just heard a country remake of Aerosmith's "Miss You" (I
think thats the title--from Armageddon). We can start a whole thread
on bad country remakes of classic rock. I know rock has its roots in
country and blues, but it seems we have gone full circle where todays
hit country is yesterday's rock.

Here's a remake I'm kind of on the fence on....Cake's cover of "I
Will Survive." I used to like it, now I just find it annoying

Paul,
Here's hoping that you get what you (and the rest of us) want--
another Paul Feig series. I enjoyed reading your post and it seemed
neither pathetic or whiny. I think its great the way you keep in
touch with us, your fans.

But you know what? Maybe you should just get out
of the television business...no, really.

I say this, not because I think you're asking too
much from TV execs and the like--in fact, I don't
believe this, at all.

No, I think you should stick with movies, because
the boob-tube, is going DOWN the tube.

When you've got a show like "Temptation Island,"
which actually dares to encourage people to
commit infidelity (and for fabulous games and
prizes!), then you know that a)there are some
REALLY depraved people running this candy store;
and b)it's only a matter of time before TV goes
the way of radio.

Apparently, Paul, this newfangled brand of
anti-intellectualism is going around like some
sort of mass-market plague. The other day, in my
Novel Writing Workshop, I was, in a word,
blasted...for using allusions.

One woman said, "in one chapter alone, in both
the descriptions, and the dialogue, you make
references to [Miguel de, 'Don Quixote' author]
Cervantes, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Bart Starr,
Woody Allen, J.D. Salinger, SCTV, reality-shows,
MTV, inexperienced Wal-Mart employees, 'Match
Game,' the New Yorker magazine, and 'Green
Acres.' Just what are trying to SAY, anyway?"

"Well," I replied, "I'm trying to say that, in
both descriptions and dialogue, we make
references to Cervantes, Chaucer, Shakespeare,
Bart Starr, Woody Allen, J.D. Salinger, SCTV,
reality-shows, MTV, inexperienced Wal-Mart
employees, 'Match Game,' the New Yorker magazine,
and 'Green Acres.'

"And, by the way, you forgot to mention Crick and
Watson's DNA theory."

"Well...that's just...LAME-ASS."

"Where I come from," I remarked, "we say
'whatever'."

Try to help the plebeians, Paul, and all they're
gonna want are bread and circuses.

Granted, I'm not the best of writers, but I think
if Thomas Pynchon can make allusions (some, btw,
I NEVER catch), then why can't I? After all, am I
NOT supposed to enlighten you, the post-modern
reader, as to how you live?

Well, anyways...

The point I'm trying to make, Paul, is that every
genius has to endure more than his fair share of
the conspiracies of dunces.

It's just that, where the film community is
concerned, there are a smidgen less dunces to
fight, and you can tell them to 'f-off' without
actually burning any bridges.

("Miramax ain't the ONLY pimp on this street
corner, pal!")

So, Paul, again, I advise you: LEAVE TV ALONE.
STICK WITH THE CELLULOID PLAYGROUNDS...

and, if you want, take "Ludlow Residence," and
turn it into a movie...of course, if you do, and
if it's a hit, five will get you ten that the
networks will be BEATING at your door, wanting to
do a TV adaptation of it, a la "M*A*S*H."

Ok, i refuse to even go there Rashad.
But since you put me in a tough situation,
I am not Garth. I meant to say,
"If I was Garth, I would have..." and instead
I said "if Garth was smart...."  ok, so I repeat,
I am not that man.   I have credentials.
