Thanks, Alicia, I'm glad you liked it! I also liked the way you handled
dialogue in *Flambards Reborn.*

I had a little time this morning, so did a few revisions to yesterday's postings
to tighten it up a bit.

I am being a little hard on Will, but he will eventually be rewarded ;-)

Hello Lisa,

I want to tell you how much I am enjoying your work! The dialog is great. I
found I loved writing dialog too. You are developing these characters
wonderfully, and, as I said before, very much in keeping with the original
style. I suppose some of the club members will not appreciate the problems you
are pointing out, but I feel this is very realistic for two people who were so
different. There would have been problems from the outset, and all Christina's
misgivings ring true.

I look forward to the next installment!

Alicia Snow

Flambardians,

In the *FILES* folder I've posted a longer piece, which you can read either as a
conclusion to *The Edge of the Cloud* or a beginning to *Flambards Divided.* It
begins to explore what happens after Will and Christina's marriage. Strictly
G-rated (which will please some and disappoint others), it focuses on the
emotional relationship between these two, who in many ways have very little in
common with each other, and now find themselves feeling at sea.

As always, your comments are welcome, critical as well as complimentary. I'm
having fun investigating the transformations in aviation and horseback-riding
that took place around August 1914, and the historical events described, such as
the Avro 504 shot down by German fire, are as true as can be managed by an
American writing a hundred years later ;-)

It's to be continued when I get some time. Suggestions for subsequent plot
development would be appreciated.

I'm having great fun writing. I hope you're enjoying reading.

This is well written. Especially, the part about Isabelle dressed as a parlor
maid fooling everyone...Thank you for sharing with us. Enjoyed it.

P.S. Couple of days ago I passed through Sawley hall. The gates signage has been
removed as "Private" "Sawley hall". Wonder whatever happened to the place. Has
anyone made any offer or perhaps even bought already? I wish who ever buy the
place would be a fan of Flambards, wouldn't it be lovely?

This is excellent, Lisa. As a Will/Christina fan, I couldn't have been more
pleased. And I agree with Alicia. The style really is seamless.

Thanks for your kind comments, Sunni and Valerie.

I've posted a new piece, a kind of chapter ending that explores something
different: Isobel Russell, including what she was like, her death, and how it
affected the family, especially the isolated William. It begins with an excerpt
from p. 116 of Peyton's text in the one-volume Penguin edition.

As always, let me know your comments and ideas. And Florence, I look forward to
your Yuletide ideas!

Dear All:

Yuletide fandom nominations are open! For those of you who have never
participated in Yuletide, it is a livejournal based community which operates
once a year to provide Christmas "presents" of fanfiction stories for people in
"obscure" fandoms (all free!).

What this means is:

People who like writing fanfiction sign up agreeing to write stories for one
another. You undertake to write a story based on someone else's request; someone
else is assigned to write a story for you based on your request.

The fun kicks off in October when the Yuletide moderators ask for nominations of
obscure fandoms. 'Obscure' means that relatively few people write fanfiction
within it (i.e. Star Trek and Harry Potter should not be nominated; but little
fandoms like Winnie-the-Pooh, Anne of Green Gables, Enid Blyton's Mallory Towers
series, Georgette Heyer's books, Frances Hodgson Burnett's the Secret Garden,
AND FLAMBARDS are welcome). That's the stage we are in now (and for the next few
days).

Next writers sign up offering to write in some of the fandoms (ie you get to say
what you feel able to write about), and also putting down their preferences for
what they want written for them (you give more than one ideas). That stage will
start pretty soon after the fandom nominations end (and normally only lasts a
week or two).

Once all that closes, the moderators run a programme that matches everyone
according to choices, and then they send you an email saying who you are
supposed to write a story for. That person will have listed 3 or 4 ideas for you
to use (e.g. someone might say something like: Flambards - please write a story
set during the Edge of a Cloud that includes Will and Christina but is told from
Will's point of view and is about how he feels about Christina).

You only have to write one story based on one of the ideas you've been sent
(minimum words: 1000), and there is a deadline for posting it on the Yuletide
community website. This gives the moderators time to find an alternative person
to write a story if plans change and you have to 'default' (i.e. can't write the
story in time after all). On Christmas Day you get an email with the story that
was written for you.

Yuletide has grown over the years. Last year they had over 2000 people
partcipating; this year looks to be bigger yet. I did it last year and it was
enormous fun. I have already nominated the Flambards series. There is still time
to nominate other fandoms if anyone is interested (other KM Peyton books
perhaps?), if there are other community members who like writing fanfiction.

Nominations for fandoms will remain open through 8:59 pm US Eastern time on
Tuesday, October 20th.

To check the list of fandoms that have already been nominated use this web
address:

http://yuletidetreasure.org/get_nominated_fandoms.cgi

To nominate a fandom use this web address:

http://yuletidetreasure.org/nominations/nominate_fandoms.cgi

Last year, as some of you may remember, I wrote one Flambards story for
Yuletide. I picked it up as a 'pinch hit' when the original person the request
was allocated to defaulted. The request I was given was something that included
both Mark and Christina and horses (so I sent them off riding together one
summer's morning, and having an impropmtu race that Christina won, largely
because of Mark's impatience).

You can do it too!

Thanks

Antibacterial
Antibacterial is the term given to substances that kill or slow the
growth of bacteria when treating human and environmental surfaces. These
include substances that aid in proper hygiene.

Examples of antibacterial-containing commercial products

     * Hand soaps, gels, foams
     * Dishwashing detergents
     * Mattresses
MRSA and VRE
Examples of antimicrobial (drug) resistance:

     * Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
     * Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE)
What is drug resistance?
Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of microbes, such as bacteria,
viruses, parasites, or fungi, to grow in the presence of a chemical
(drug) that would normally kill it or limit its growth.

Thank you for your comments. I frankly don't know how to post to the "files"
section. I'll look into it.
I posted it to the Flambards site in pieces when I transferred it to electronic
file some time ago. I had written it for my daughter on yellow legal pad with
pencil many years ago when she finished the third book and felt so cheated out
of a happier ending. It was my first attempt at writing fiction. I found I
loved to write. As I put the whole thing onto computer, I of course, polished
it up a bit. And then I decided I could do a better ending than I had done in
the past. That took longer than I expected.

From that, I went on to write something that had been simmering in the back of
my mind for a very long time. A book on Guinevere, King Arthur's wife. My
mother is Cornish, and therefore steeped in the Arthurian legends. On a 1973
trip to visit our roots in Cornwall, I picked up several books on the legends
and the archeological digs in search of the real chieftain. I wrote a page or
so, and then realized that I (or my muse) wanted to do it in iambic pentameter,
as a riposte to Tennyson. And so I went back and started over doing the scene
that way. From that day on, it flowed, and I was lost in my own little world
for two solid years of writing. Then life intervened. I went through a
divorce, and had to move and go back to work, and then endure subsequent love
affairs which allowed no time for writing for eight years!

After the second love affair ended in catastrophe, I went back to my cave and
finished my book. It took one more year of writing the last third of the book.
And then a year of editing and sending it out to publishers. It finally got
published in 1999. It had got 19 rejections. Though several big houses,
including Random House, said they would buy it if I took it out of poetry. I
refused to do that. I have no regrets. It was never about the money. It was
always about the voice inside that had to be heard.

Strangely, though I have tried to write other stories, I have not been able to
do so. I loved the obsessive flight to my inner world at the time. But now I
have too much to do in the real world for that kind of concentration. I have
granddaughters, and animals, and other people's wonderful books to absorb my
time. Perhaps one day another muse will whisper in my ear. Until then, I go
with the flow.

Hi Alicia and all,

I agree - it's very hard to send pieces of writing out into the world. I think
we all need a personal secretary, as Dorothy Sayers had, to toss out the
outrageous critiques and summarize the reasonable ones and then feed them to us
when we're in the mood.

I'm not anti-Dick. His character felt the least developed of the major
characters in the novel. I got the sense that Peyton liked the idea of Dick
because it seemed egalitarian, but somehow didn't emotionally connect with the
character. So I think the enterprise of fleshing him out is a great idea!

I haven't read other books by Peyton. I stumbled across these as a result of
desultory DVD watching (my husband and I are making our way through the vaults
of 70s and 80s British-made TV series that we missed the first time around).

I do teach creative writing, as well as literature courses. But I'm finding
myself feeling finished with my day-job of teaching and increasingly interested
in writing my own pieces. (I've published scholarly work that I'm fairly sure
would bore the snot out of a regular reader.)

What brought you to writing? And are you continuing with other projects? It
would be great to see *Flambards Reborn* posted in the "files" section so people
could find it easily. I think it deserves reading!

I am always interested in fanfic of the Flambards sort! I have read and enjoyed
Flambards Reborn (thanks Alicia) and the new material just posted. Very neat
having "writer-types" able to do this sort of thing on the site (I'm a singer
and my creative gifts are limited to that arena I'm afraid!). And, although I
am partial to Dick, I would enjoy reading any take on the continuation of the
story and also(dare I say it?),more adult fleshing-out(sorry!)of scenes written
by Peyton(well, nothing TOO racy!). So please, post away!

on the mark (no pun intended ;-). I love the sense of sexual tension in the
relationship between Christina and Mark, who is always on the edge of being

be impossible and irresistible in equal measure. I am turning 50 this fall, and
the series brought back, with tremendous poignancy, some of the happiest and

Dear Lisa:

Welcome! As someone said to me when I joined a few months ago: this isn't the
most active group I belong to but it is friendly and one does get little gems
periodically. I too would love to read your story.

I wrote a Flambards fanfic for Yuletide 2008 which is also posted on my own

Yuletide is about to get started again, so if you want mnore Flambards fanfic
that is the place to ask for it.

There is also a section for Flambards fanfiction on www.fanfiction.net.

on the mark (no pun intended ;-). I love the sense of sexual tension in the
relationship between Christina and Mark, who is always on the edge of being
impossible, and the counterpoint of Christina's relationship with Will, who can
be impossible and irresistible in equal measure. I am turning 50 this fall, and
the series brought back, with tremendous poignancy, some of the happiest and
most powerful memories of my life around age 20.

Yes, I am definitely interested. Strangely enough, there seems to be very little
(if any) Flambards fanfiction out there--apart from Alicia's story. Looking
forward to reading your story.

Sunni (very much a "Will girl")

Sure, I'm interested, and thank you for the kind words - in spite of the fact
that you are a "Will girl". I know it's hard for those who don't like Dick
Wright to think of him being happy with Christina. I found great pleasure in
writing Flambards Reborn, as I am sure you find great pleasure in your writing.
It's strange how one's work becomes such a personal part of one's identity. We
can't control how our kids will turn out, but our intellectual property is
entirely our own - and we must take full responsibility for it. And if people
criticize it, it feels like a kick to the gut. Of course, everybody loves to
criticize - and feels he has a right to.

Have you read any other books by KM Peyton? They are all very interesting. She
can write about bad things so well, and I envy that. I hate to spend time
dwelling in a dark place while I try to make some horrible scene come alive.
But I know it is necessary for plot development. Do you teach creative writing?
Alicia

Hi Flambardians,

I'm delighted to find that this group exists. I just watched the series for the
first time, having missed it in the late 1970s because I was in college and
didn't have a TV then (or much time to watch TV then anyway). I'm a teacher by
profession and also a writer (both fiction and nonfiction). I immediately read
all four books and then went through your posts to see what people were saying
about them and the films. What great conversations you've had on this board
over the years!

The story touches on the themes of one of my favorite Victorian novels, Emily
Bronte's *Wuthering Heights*. I loved the ways in which Peyton and the TV
producers adapted the tale as a coming-of-age story so focused on the viewpoint
of the young heroine. I thought the casting of the TV series seemed perfectly
on the mark (no pun intended ;-). I love the sense of sexual tension in the

the series brought back, with tremendous poignancy, some of the happiest and
most powerful memories of my life around age 20.

That being said, I think you'd have to class me with the "Will girls." ;-)

As a fiction writer I sometimes "apprentice" myself to the masters by lightly
revising or extending their work. I don't change fundamental plot or
characterization elements, but work on elements that I think can add to the work
or deepen what is already there (and very good) on the page. I very much
enjoyed reading Alicia's *Flambards Reborn* as a work in this same genre.

All this simply to say that I'd love to share this work with you because I know
the people in this group love and respect Peyton's novels and the TV series -
and are highly critical readers as well. The scenes I'm working on right now
are mostly from *The Edge of the Clouds.* Let me know if you're interested.

Yes, it would. I've always loved this group. I've been wondering where everyone
went.

I S- if they do not appear on your internet by this evening please watch out for
the next day or so or whenever you have time- because sometimes some videos take
longer to appear than others - but happy watching!

Hello Members.
I have been off this site for a year 7 months of which I have spent in
hospital. We are watching "All Creatures great and small" at the moment. It was
filmed around the same time as Flambards.
What I want to ask is if I have missed anything noteable in the last 12 months?
   Regards to you all
      Margot C

Thanks for the heads up! I just adored the Will and Christina mvid you did last
year. They were my favorite part of the Flambards story.
