MOST Impressive!
I liked that coming at you frontal view, unique perspective.

Star Trek Next Gen. saucer separation idea had to come from Fireball.

Didn't someone at one time attempt build an actual scale model of Fireball Jr?
One that you can actually walk in.
Would be a nice attraction, somewhere it would be appreciated, of course.

Hello Everyone,

As some of you may know, I have been working on an extensively detailed CAD
model of Fireball XL5 for some time now. For the most part, I have recently
completed it and generated a number of renderings. I have created a slide show
video presentation of some of the renderings and made it available for viewing
on You Tube.

Simply type in "Fireball XL5 3-D CAD Model" in the You Tube search window and it
should come up. Be sure to turn up the sound.

Regards,

Dave Ireland

Yahoo! may be doing so. I'm checking the group's settings now.

Well there is no arguing the fact that Professor Matic is a super genius, just
take a look at his glasses.

Another thought occurred to me when watching "Whistle for Danger", when Zoonie
incessant whistle blowing causes Robert to blow his stack the sound effect is
exactly that of a tea kettle whistle. Perhaps Robert was the result of
Professor Matic failed attempted to build a machine to brew a perfect cup of
tea. It would explain Robert's predisposition to blow steam out of his head at
the lease provocation.

Another thing, then I watched the Star Trek movie The Voyage Home and they used
transparent aluminum, I thought to myself, I bet Robert is made out of
transparent aluminum.

So I google transparent aluminum and found out Oxford scientist have create
transparent aluminum using soft X-ray. By the time Professor Matic invents
Robert in about 2062 transparent aluminum maybe as common as glass.

     Hi david,
Digittal photos? That would be incredible. It'll never happen in real life
   of course...

I think Mattt's coffee receives a somewhat mixed reception.
Still, his contributions to science in the formm of advances in robotics,
the development of the Ultrascope and machines that can accomplish time
travel may also have played a part in his importance to the UPO and the
   World Space Patrol in particular.

Perhaps one key to his success as an inventor is that he's not afraid of
getting things wrong and appearing foolish.
He also appears to be an inventor for the sheer joy of it.

I finally cashed in a round-to-it and watched "Whistle for Danger".

I believe, because of his brilliance at making machines that brew a prefect cup
of coffee, Professor Matic is the head of all scientific research for Space
City.

The picture at the conference room of Fireball XL5 does change. Technology
perfected at the start of the 21st century called digital photography allows
this. It's a digital picture frame that show digital photos. Depending on
who has reserved the conference room it shows photos pertaining to them. At
other times, it shows the Fireball ship currently ready for launch.

Recently I was re-watching "Whistle For Danger", and was struck by the way a
scientific space mission was handled. During the initial discussion concerning
the planet Floran, Professor Matic sits in with Commander Zero and Lieutenant
Ninety. After XL5 makes its survey, the conference consists of Commander Zero,
Professor Matic, Venus and Steve.

I had initially wondered why Venus wasn't asked to attend the first meeting
concerning Floran. But, after some thought, I felt that the Professor wasn't
just XL5's navigator and Chief Engineer, but also the Chief Science Officer as
well. Venus is also a competent scientist (and the ship's Medical Officer), but
protocol would dictate that the Professor be consulted first concerning possible
scientific missions for XL5.

(Plus, does every Fireball have a Doctor of Medicine? I could see there being
a dedicated Science Officer on each Fireball, but Venus might be assigned to XL5
as an adjunct: part of the crew in order to carry out continuing deep space
medical research. In "Invasion Earth", Venus is busy inoculating several Earth
outposts against the spread of a disease. The job would've been simpler if each
Fireball had its own Medical Officer, so Venus' position could be considered
unique.)

Back to the original discussion. Once the situation on Floran was proven to be
entirely biological in nature, Venus is asked to contribute her own findings
concerning the problem (with Matt still sitting in). This would make sense as
the opinion of a dedicated MD and biologist would be important in such a
problem.

This episode made me feel that perhaps Professor Matic was not only the
Science Officer for XL5, but also occupied an executive position within the
World Space Patrol concerning matters involving scientific research and related
situations. XL5 might not have been the ship chosen to go to Floran, but it was
still necessary to consult Matt in regards to the problem (the fact that XL5's
crew included Venus might've been a deciding factor in assigning that ship to
the mission). It might be that Matt represents the "head" for the Patrol's
Science Division: keeping tabs on the particular specialities of various
Fireball Science Officers. He, Zero and Ninety would, as a result, consider
which Fireballs (or other Patrol ships) would be sent on scientific missions
(the patrol sectors for each Fireball would also be a consideration).

On space missions, Venus is the crew member who spends the most time in the
laboratory on XL5 (her name, in fact, being on the laboratory door), but
Professor Matic still holds the position of Science Officer (having experience
and training in several disciplines, but he would defer to Venus on matters
medical or biological).

(One other minor observation: a picture of XL5 is seen above the entrance to
the Conference Room. It's interesting to ponder why the picture would be of a
specific ship, rather than just a "generic" Fireball. Possibly XL5 is *the* ship
of the Patrol . . . as evidenced by the fact that the Patrol's Senior Astronaut
is at the helm . . . or perhaps the picture changes depending on which Fireball
is currently scheduled for launch.)

   Michael

I don't work for Network, so I don't know.

The book will be shipped as soon as it arrives. Unfortunately, the publishers
haven't actually delivered the book to me yet. But I'm sure it'll be soon...

Thanks for the information on the Fireball Zoom adverts Stephen.

Have you got any idea why Network did not include all 3 on their Special edition
DVD boxed set?

I have already preordered your book on the filmedinsupermarionation.co.uk
website by the way and am very much looking forward to reading it. I had
originally intended buying it on Amazon but the fact your website accepted
payment by Paypal made me change my mind.
When do you hope to get preordered copies posted out?

Fireball XL5 was still in production after the first episode went out. The
cinema commercials were shot in around May 1963 (I have got an actual date
somewhere) and seems likely to have been the first thing shot at the new
Stirling Road studios. Stingray commenced shooting in June 1963.

There's a note about it in my book... but I've not got the manuscript to hand
now, so can't confirm exactly.

Hi Keith:
I have to agree with you regarding the notion that it is a rebuilt
control cabin. I'm pretty sure that the AP Films staff were well into
pre-production on Stingray by the time they were commissioned to create
the colour XL5 advert. I believe I'm right in thinking that Production
on XL5 ceased during or just before its first run on TV. The sets and
miniatures for XL5 would have been recycled into the world of Stingray
or tossed into a rubbish skip by then. This would necessitate a new set
for the cinema ad. Also, the commercial potential of Steve and Venus as
'spokes-puppets' would have only been viable after the series was shown
on TV and it's popularity (& recognition factor) defined for the
ice-lolly market to take notice.
This is only my opinion but it seems to explain the new or refurbished set.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I too noticed the tiled floor and thought of the
TV21 pictures, but doesn't the advert pre-date TV21 by a good couple of years?
I thought the adverts were done while they were still shooting the series, or
immediately after they had finished, but perhaps my memory is letting me down.
(There's alot to be said for being 55 - and none of it good!!!) After having
another look at the film, it seems the set has been modified for the advert as
there's a sort of "astroscope" type monitor in the first shot of S and V and
it's definitely not the navigation bay. I've checked the episode XL5 to H2O and
the jetmobile bay does have a tiled floor, but the rectangular window we see in
that episode is not the same as we see here. So all in all it looks like a load
of XL5 scenery just assembled for the purpose of shooting the advert. However,
the ship's circular bulkhead, which we see behind Steve, and the open door-way
giving us a view beyond into another part of the ship, is a nice detail which
suggests that at least part of the set was something more substantial. And it's
nice that they went to so much trouble for such a short piece of film.

Thanks again Graeme for giving us this link.

Liz

Hi Graham
Thanks very much for the link to the Thunderbirds and Friends site.
I recon that is where I have seen the missing Fireball Zoom advert before - and
the Supercar Walls ice cream one too.
My memory is obviously begining to play tricks on me since I hit the big 50 (or
should I admit to 55).

Regards
Keith

Thanks for that link, Graeme. This is the only Fireball XL5 Zoom advert I can
recall and I was most disappointed that it's not included in the extras on the
new dvd set.

As an aside - I 'm interested to see the unusual location for this clip. Is it
the jetmobile bay? I'm looking at the small narrow window which can be seen
behind Venus when Steve says, "Get your Zoom now." The only other time I can
remember seeing this window in such detail is in XL5 to H2O. (I think)

Keith - I've been meaning to post a few words about the new boxset, which I
agree is excellent. I'll try and get that done asap.

Best wishes to everyone,

Liz

     Keith:
Micky Bister's site has Supermarionation advertisement clips online as
MOV files - including the ones you mention.
   http://www.thunderbirds-and-friends.de/
   Click on the 'Videoclips' button.
No idea what has been released with the DVDs. It's complicated, since
licensing is different for each region code and the extras vary with
   each geographical set.
