Last night's episode was great, and I can't wait for the season finale.  (though it looks like it's going to be a cliffhanger, which I don't particularly care for.  On the other hand, maybe that makes it more likely there will be a season two.)

I would've liked to have seen more of an impact from the quake last night, since I do think anything that would knock down the bridge would do a lot of other damage, too.  Really, I'm pretty sure it would've been a true catastrophe.  Not that we need to spend a lot of time seeing all that in what should be our entertainment, but I don't think you can build up to the thing being 'the big one' and then just have a few folks stumble around, and a couple of windows break and call it good.   But maybe there'll be more to come next ep.

I can't wait to see what happens with the surgery.  If I haven't said it already, what I'm hoping is that it's a complete success in terms of the aneurysm, only to have Eli discover it didn't change his visions one little bit.

Anyway, this is the best thing to come along on TV in a while, and I hope it stays around for a lot longer.

I have not missed a single episode since this show has started and I
don't plan too! I am still charged after watching the last episode and
each one brings tears just watching it. I just watched the latest one
about the earthquake and man oh man! Tell me what you all thought of

name except she played Peggy Bundy back in the day but she plays a good

I thought this was a pretty good ep, though I did miss seeing Nate.  The scenes between the brothers are often my favorites, so not to have even a little throwaway scene was kind of a bummer.  And Chen was practically non-existent, too.  Hm.  I'd hate to see them move the show in the direction that focuses strictly on the relationships at the firm.  I think Eli (both the character and the show) needs the balance of outside forces, too.

I was glad to see a bit of development of Bennett, though.  I haven't been a big fan of his so far, as he's mostly been seen as a fairly one dimensional guy, and that dimension was easily labeled Conceited Jerk.  Good to see them exploring some other aspects.

And the chimps were just adorable, even if they did serve to bring Taylor and Matt closer to becoming an actual couple, which I absolutely do not want.

Hm.  Have to say I think this might be my least favorite episode yet.  The Nate-flashback deal was almost too much of a variation on what I've already come to think of as 'normal' for Eli; Nate himself was a jerk on a couple of different occasions; and--not to harp on this topic-- the whole romantic tangle is making me crazy.

Well, in terms of the singing, I have to say I actually think Victor
Garber has a pretty good voice. I think part of the reason it seems
a little goofy is because it seems sort of out of character for
Jordan to be all musical and in touch with his softer side. :-)

And as for the surgery, I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

There's a part of me that thinks the best thing to do would be to
have a successful surgery to remove the aneurysm then have Eli
discover that his visions haven't stopped. That way he'd be forced
to deal with the idea that he really might have a 'higher calling'.
Plus, even though it's been established that a guy can live a long
and healthy life with the thing in his brain, from the 'suspension of
disbelief' perspective, most people would expect that if the aneurysm
is causing the visions, it would likely be causing other problems,
and you can't really have the main character on the verge of dropping
dead at any minute.

On the other hand, I don't know if the characters and the show are
well established enough yet with the viewership that everyone would
be willing to accept the visions and Eli as some sort of
true 'prophet' without a medical rationale, so it's possible that a
successful surgery would mean the end of the show, and I certainly
don't want _that_!

got the idea to use GM as a muse for the whole Eli thing, and i don't
either but i figure maybe the person who started the show was a huge
GM fan and loved his music, or they just winged it and hit it right??
I still have to see the first EVER eppie of this show, i came in on
the second one and have been hooked, i think Johnny Lee Miller does a
great job of being Eli and everyone clicks well but i wish they WOULD
STOPPPPPPPPPP PULESE STOP the boss from singing, gag!!!! It's
like "Omg do not sing GM songs you twit" lmfao.......but as of now
tho i understand why as he was a fan boy of GM back then, and also GM
sings it better cause it's a GM song hahahaha.......But my Mom thinks
it's quite strange cause of all the tribulations with GM in the past
that they would think of using him as the muse LOL....personally even
tho he loves men i'm so enjoying him being a part of it *teehee*
hahaha.....the last few months if i've needed help to sleep, i
have "Ladies & Gentleman"Double CD of GM that i listen to the softer
side and it does help and i so agree with the character of the boss
in why so many freakin love GM's music:) VERY VERY feel good, whether
soft or funky lmfao......i'm suprised that Eli didn't tell GM about
it.....about his visions and how Taylor took him to a show
hahaha......it was hysterical tho that the boss was a fan
hahahaha.......and goes "Gotta have Faith" hahahahaha.....and GM
like "yeah i know it's my song you sick pup" hahahaha.......in his

and great smile and she goes "o brother" hahahahah........she agrees

lmfao.....and then called him a pig, i thought it was interesting he
faked the thing in the court room to get the guy to talk......i
really don't have a fav right now cause i haven't seen the first one
and it seems like every week is better, when i heard GM was gonna be
on this week with a case of his own, killed me hahahahah, esp cause
of Eli hahahaha.....and best line "O what's the song" and GM goes "I
want your sex" and Eli going "O sorry i'm not your type"
HAHAH........and whoever thought GM looked like Bono was
amusing.......no Maggie this week.....or Patty.....I did like the one
about the marine girl who wanted to be home with her boy and hubby
thing alot......hard to say tho which is best....lol @ last week when
the girls sang together and this week with Dodd/Taylor singing I GOT
U BABE hahahaha.....but PULESE creators of this show stop having the
boss sing gag me LOLOLOLOL........do you think Eli will do the
surgery??

hahaha......and yeah i like both girls for Eli but Maggie is a better
fit for nuEli......i love Eli & Patty omgggggg they are so hilarious
hahahah.....what did you all think this week when Eli finds out that
Nate is dating the girl who was his first lover, i hate when that
crap goes on in shows, it's like leave my ex's alone if i had
siblings, geez lolololol

i may go to the GM concert in June that is on sale on Monday, i have

Hi, Everyone!

Just wanted to drop a line of hello, and to say that I'm glad I found this group.  I love Eli Stone, and I hope we'll have lots of lively discussion about the show.

I think my favorite episode so far has maybe been Something to Save; the disbarment hearing was great.

And, I have to go on record early on as saying that I am already not a big fan of this 'love triangle' they're working on.  I like Taylor and I like Maggie (and part of me might even think Maggie is a better fit for the 'new' Eli), but the man was just engaged to be married a few weeks ago, and leaving his fiancee didn't have anything to do with not being in love with her any more.  Even with all the craziness going on in his life--and as much as he must surely need someone to lean on-- it doesn't strike me as reasonable that he's out looking for another involvement.

Okay, well that's my initial rant; thanks for listening to that!

But mostly I just want to say that I am truly enjoying this new show, and I hope it stays around for a long time.

Ausiello on Grey's, SVU, Gossip Girl, Buffy and More!
Sarah Michelle Gellar courtesy 20th Century Fox: Katherine Heigl by Bob D’Amico/ABC; Mariska HargitaySarah Michelle Gellar; Katherine Heigl; Mariska Hargitay
Question: That's great about Mer/Der getting back together for good this season, but what about Seattle Grace's other star-crossed duo — you know, Gizzie? — Mandy
Ausiello: It's with overwhelming joy deep regret that I inform you that Gizzie is no more. Sources confirm that the ill-conceived plot twist suffocated to death under the weight of its own absurdity shortly after the writers returned to work last month. A private memorial service was held in early March at the home of Shonda Rhimes. In lieu of flowers, fans are asked to keep the "thank gods" to a low roar….
Question: Got any clue as to what's going to happen when Addison returns to Grey's Anatomy? — Angie
Ausiello: I've actually got a big clue, Angie, and here it is: Addison just so happens to stop by Seattle Grace on the same day a patient is admitted to the hospital with a neo-natal-type emergency. What are the odds?!
Question: I need some Grey's Anatomy scoop on Sloan/Hahn, STAT!— Yolanda
Ausiello: You'll find some in this week's Ausiello Report vodcast.
Question: Any scoop on One Tree Hill? — Kristin
Ausiello: A Tree Hill babe is either undergoing surgery or getting lucky (or both), because the show has issued a casting call for a gifted surgeon in his thirties who is both handsome and charming.
Question: Come on, Michael, tell us something about Law & Order: SVU's 200th episode! — Tatiana
Ausiello: How 'bout I tell you something about the episode that precedes the 200th on April 22? I think you'll be glad I did, especially since it pertains to the casting of Bill Pullman as Benson's newspaper-editor boyfriend. This scoop is rated VS for "Very Spoilery," so proceed at your own risk. According to an SVU insider, we'll find out that Benson has been quietly dating Pullman's character not for days, not for weeks, but for months behind everyone's back — Stabler included. Um, awkward!
Question: Loyal Aushole here. I'm wondering what's up with the CW's 90210 spin-off. Any news if they've ordered a pilot? — Dawn
Ausiello: They've ordered a script and only a script. Of course, they've commissioned Rob Thomas to pen it, so a pilot pickup is pretty much a foregone conclusion. The only question now is which members of the original cast will be making the leap to 90210: The Next Gen. "They're still figuring out what the link will be," says one insider, "but there will be a link." Not sure if this is worth reading into, but I hear the last name of one of the teen characters rhymes with Filver. Hmmm….
Question: Any news from Men in Trees? — Linda
Ausiello: Yep, and some of it's good, while some of it's, well, less good. The sucky news is that the ratings haven't been great since the show returned. On the plus side, Trees' small but feverishly loyal audience has been growing over the past two weeks — and, given the across-the-board erosion we're seeing these days, that's pretty miraculous. Let's hope the numbers continue to inch upward and series creator Jennie Bicks doesn't have to use the alternate, series finale ending she shot for this season's last episode.
Question: Who the heck are the Oceanic Six? If Aaron's not one of them, and Jin's grave marker is for his "supposed" death when the plane crashed, who else made it off the island with Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid and Sun?— Jen
Ausiello: Who said Aaron is not one of the Oceanic Six? Certainly not me. Take another look at my asterisk quiz from Feb. 27 and consider all of the possible combinations. In the meantime, don't expect a definitive answer about the Six from Team Darlton. Carlton Cuse tells me they're "not going public with any further clarifications right now." And what of the ABC promo that promised viewers they'd know the identity of the Six by the end of last week's episode? "We don't determine how ABC promotes the show," says Cuse. "But Damon and I will say you have now seen all of the Oceanic Six in this season's episodes."
Question: Your latest Lost asterisk quiz doesn't make sense. You wrote this about last week's big Oceanic Six reveal: "But most of you seem to have it already figured out: *o* *a* *** **e **l* **** *i***." — Frederic
Ausiello: "Too bad you are only half right." I was referring to the widely held assumption (at least among rabid Lost fans) that Jin made it off the island with Sun.
Question: These asterisk quizzes of yours are nothing short of an insulting kick to the nether regions. If I had the ability to teleport jumbo amounts of elephant droppings to a point about eight feet over your head and let them go, I would!— Johnnie
Ausiello: I suppose I had that coming.
Question: Do you have any scoop on ASP's new show, The Return of Jezebel James? I thought the first episode was kind of weak but the second one was pretty good. Are they really only showing seven episodes? — Stacy
Ausiello: Judging by the ratings for the premiere, I'm not even sure we'll see a third episode, let alone all seven.
Question: I would be truly honored if you could give us some massive gossip about the five new episodes of Gossip Girl. — Matt
Ausiello: Here's further proof that Josh Schwartz is determined to get a "name" actress to play the role of Serena's scheming frenemy, Georgina Sparks: I hear his casting peeps offered the gig to a big-time Buffy grad. Too bad she was asking for too much $$$. Got guesses? Post 'em in the Ask Ausiello Discussion Thread.
Question: I'm dying without a Pushing Daisies fix! — Hayley
Ausiello: Then my scoopy dispatch from Saturday's Paley Fest panel on Daisies may just save your life! One thing I neglected to mention was that series creator Bryan Fuller told the crowd that ABC already approved his outlines for next season's first five episodes. So the network is apparently pleased with the "harder, more aggressive direction" Fuller plans on taking Daisies in next fall. Speaking of Paley, mucho thanks to all those who sent in questions for tonight's Friday Night Lights panel, moderated by (squeal) me! I'll try to get them answered in between tossing my cookies. Also, if you've got Qs for the casts of Buffy, Dancing with the Stars and Gossip Girl, get them to me via ask_ausiello@... before their respective panels on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Click here to find out who'll be in attendance, and please write "Paley Qs" in the subject line of your e-mails.
Question: Are you still meeting your fans after the Friday Night Lights panel at Paley Fest? You had said something about meeting up at Johnny Rockets earlier.— Famin
Ausiello: Unfortunately, you're the only one who responded my security detail scoped out the space and determined that the open seating and huge glass windows made me too vulnerable to sniper attack. And that's just not a chance they're willing to take. I'm really sorry.
Question: Several weeks ago, I sent you a link to a really neat Smurf site. All I asked in return was some major House scoopage, and there's been no House scoop since. I feel so unloved! — Jill
Ausiello: The only thing more pathetic than a whiny Aushole is a whiny and dishonest Aushole.
Question: House scoopage, please? — Megan
Ausiello: The Cutthroat Bitch is back! A Fox spokesperson confirms that Anne Dudek will reprise her role as Dr. House's female doppelganger for at least two more episodes this season.
Question: Thanks for the scoop about the awesome Joel Gretsch from The 4400 playing Angie Harmon's love interest on Women's Murder Club. Anything else you can share about this underrated show? — Chris
Ausiello: In addition to a boyfriend, Harmon's Lindsay is also getting a dad, and an estranged one at that. Apparently father (a former cop) and daughter haven't spoken in seven years.
Question: Do you know when Weeds will be coming back with new episodes? — Cassandra
Ausiello: Production on Season 4 starts next month and the first episode airs June 16. Prepare yourself for a radically different show, though. When we pick up, Nancy and family are living in a small town near the Mexican border and her little operation has gotten a lot bigger.
Question: Do you know what the deal is with Scrubs? Is it officially going to ABC? What about the unaired episodes that were already filmed? I need to know! — Julie
Ausiello: The five pre-strike episodes will air as scheduled on NBC beginning April 10. Nothing's official beyond that. There's lots that's unofficial, though. For example, the cast is unofficially going back to work next Wednesday to shoot the first of 18 unofficial episodes to unofficially air on ABC next season.
Question: Any info on Moonlight? — Christina
Ausiello: Look who's trying to get into Beth's slacks!
Question: Give me something on Brothers & Sisters — preferably something extra scoopy. — Aidan
Ausiello: Two significant, albeit recurring, characters will not be returning in the fall.
Question: Are we really going to have to sit through a Rob Lowe presidency on Brothers & Sisters? — Gail
Ausiello: Not if Crossing Jordan's Ken Howard has anything to say about it. He's just been cast as McCallister's chief rival for the Republican nomination, and let's just say he makes Robert an offer he might not be able to refuse.
Question: What's the scoop on another season of Reaper? I love that show! — DaisyRose
Ausiello: The scoop is more people need to start watching. Maybe the two new female characters they're adding will prove enough of a draw. One of them is described as a "bland and anemic" Bench worker in her thirties who's in desperate need of a makeover (think SNL's Rachel Dratch), and the other is a sweet, funny and sharp-witted nurse in her twenties (think O.C.'s Autumn Reeser).
Question: Any word on the fate of The Unit for next fall? — Brian
Ausiello: I'm told the cast and crew don't know if they're coming back yet. That's not stopping the writers from mapping out story arcs for next season, though.
Question: I have patiently waited for any scoop on Eli Stone, but I can wait no longer. What's the scoop? — Jen
Ausiello: I'm hearing ABC is going to give it a one-time tryout on Sunday night after Desperate Housewives next month.

And that, as they say in the biz, is a wrap. Check my Ausiello Report blog throughout the week for breaking news, scoop and spoilers from Paley Fest '08. (Remember, get those questions to me at ask_ausiello@....) Also, my red-carpet interviews with the casts of Friday Night Lights, Gossip Girl, Buffy and Dancing with the Stars are headed to a TVGuide.com video player near you beginning this Thursday. Finally, a special thank-you to the wonderful folks at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa for taking such good care of me during my stay here in lovely and beautiful Los Angeles. Seriously, they're treating me like some kind of visiting celebrity. I've never felt more at home in my life.

Johnny Lee Miller, Kate Walsh, Dylan Walsh
Natalie in White Rock, N.M.: I need Grey's Anatomy news, especially MerDer scoop!
Well, you're in luck. Shonda Rhimes was the guest of honor of the Red Tie benefit for the Red Cross of Santa Monica (a relationship that started with that ferryboat-crash episode last season), and chatted about, yes, the future of Meredith and Derek. She said what I know many fans will be happy to hear: "It's time for [Meredith] to get over her issues." Rhimes continued: "She and Derek should either be over by the end of the season, or she should make it on her own. I felt like, you know, what I want to see is what happens after the happily ever after."
Virago in Tacoma, Wash.: Any scoop about my Grey's fave: Alex Karev?
Shonda said, "It's good, but I can't say anything." Poopie! Chyler Leigh, bless her possibly now-unemployed (just kidding) heart, said she doesn't think the Alex-Lexie door is closed: "It was left pretty open-ended there, so I'd guess it's going to continue for a bit. I'm very looking forward to it and to getting back to work."
Dax in Austin, Texas:  What's up for Addison's return to Grey's? Any McSteamy love?
Kate Walsh
According to Shonda, "I don't know if I'd call it the final visit, but she is coming back for a visit." And don't expect any McDreamy-McSteamy resolution either. "I think she has more important things to resolve than men. She's got the job that the chief left open for her and a couple of other things." Kate Walsh said the script hasn't been written yet and that she'll start shooting at the end of March.
Nancy in Asheboro, N.C.: I just checked out your "show returns" calendar, but where is Private Practice? One of my favorite new shows! I cannot find any info anywhere about when it will return.
Private Practice won't be back until the fall! The writers return to the table today, and production will begin in May. Kate Walsh said of the show's future storylines: "I think we're just getting started. Sadly, we had to stop at episode nine, so we're just getting our legs. There are going to be a lot of relationships developing—romantic, professional—and a lot of conflict within the practice as well."
Becky in Osceola, Ark.:  Any dish for me on McSteamy or Callie on Grey's this season?
Sara Ramirez
, whom I adore, said, "Obviously, she's not with George anymore, so she's not involved with the interns or residents. So I think she's trying to find her way socially. And obviously she's single, so I'm hoping there's going to be some guy who walks into her life, some McHotness." The line to get with Callie starts right behind me.
Madeline in Miami:  What is the story with ER? Is it coming back for a 15th season?
I’m hearing NBC very much wants it to and that the deal is “very close” to being done; however, they wanted to make sure my former future (does that make him current?) husband John Stamos would be fully on board for most of the episodes. Sources tell me John has been a big part of the series doing well as of late, and they want to make sure he's there so they can plan on beefing up his character, Gates, even more in the coming season (continuing his onscreen hookup with my old college dormmate Linda Cardellini—boo-yah!). So things are looking good. (Especially for Cardellini, that be-yotch.)
Christine in Los Angeles: Thanks for the info on America's Best Dance Crew! As a major So You Think You Can Dance fan, I decided to watch, and it was awesome. Any more scoop?
Did you know that Project Runway season-one runner-up Kara Saun is the stylist for the show?! How cool is that? And as a SYTYCD fan, you'll be psyched to know Korbi spotted season-three finalists Lauren and Cedric in the Dance Crew audience last week. Also, Shane Sparks said his departure from SYTYCD is not really a done deal. Apparently, there are calls coming in from Fox, and MTV may let him do both. Shane added that he signed the exclusive deal with Dance Crew because Randy Jackson offered him a security that SYTYCD did not—but if they'd like to have him back to choreograph a couple of opening dance numbers this summer, he'd be more than happy to do it.
Keegan in Chesterfield, Mich.:  OK, enough with How I Met Your Mother, give us the scoop on Jericho. There're only two episodes left.
Last week, Alicia Coppola visited our XM and Sirius radio show Yo on E! and said, "There are two different finales. Did you not know? Such juiciness. The one that can keep going or the one that has closure...and we don't know which finale it is going to be, but my storyline is the same regardless." Juicy, indeed!
Eli in Los Angeles: Any word on the CW's 90210 spinoff?
It's moving forward, baby!  Sources say Deedee Bradley was just hired to cast it. She was the Veronica Mars casting director. Here's hoping she finds us a new Kristen Bell and/or Jason Dohring! Ooh, or hello, here's an idea: Cast Daddy Mars as Daddy 90210.
Justin from Portland, Ore.:  Any ideas about the rest of The Office this season? What does the rest of this season look like?
I'm hearing the finale will be an hour long! Yay! Here's hoping it's filled with delicious, chunky, creamy and sweet PB&J (Pam Beesly & Jim, natch).
Johnny in Kfar Saba, Israel: Any Medium news?
Yes. The news is this: If you have never ever watched Medium, please consider giving it a chance this coming Monday (March 24), which is the first hour of a stunning two-part episode. In addition to Patricia Arquette and Anjelica Huston being their usual extraordinary selves, the "Wicked Game" eps are graced with two other amazing actresses: Sarah Drew, aka our beloved Hannah from Everwood, and Lily Rabe, aka Jill Clayburgh's daughter. These two hours are Medium at its finest: terrifying and heartwarming at the same time. We'll discuss further once you've seen part one...P.S.: Sarah Drew needs to be on my TV every single week. Can someone please hook that up? Thank you v. v. much.

SPOILERS
Ginny in New York: How about some love for Brothers & Sisters
Gladly! I'm hearing there will be a wedding at the end of this season! But not necessarily the most traditional kind as opposed to the commitment-ceremony-ish kind. Gee, did I give away which Walker it might be? Yee!
Jenna from Las Vegas:  I love the show Eli Stone, but Eli seriously needs to get some lovin' soon! Please tell me there is a girl in his future?!
Fret no more! It looks like Beth, the V-card stealer from the pilot, will be back by the March 27 episode, but which Stone is she there for? Hmmm... Also, someone else in that episode, titled "I Want Your Sex," will be getting some serious lovin', and I didn't completely hate the idea of it, but you might!
David from San Diego: More Eli Stone please!
There's going to be a new twist on the visions as Eli will be flashing back, in his brother's shoes, to his past in order to find out more about his father's death. That should be depressingly interesting. Also, Eli may be on the way to recovery through a tricky procedure that is clearly dangerous. As Eli points out, "It's just like getting your appendix out...if your appendix was buried deep in a vital part of your brain."
Kristen Bell
Anything on Lost?
For starters, I'll be heading out to Hawaii next week to hit the set and also the junket for Kristen Bell and Jason Segel's movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, so if you have questions for any of those friendly faces, email them to me at tvdiva@...! I'm also hearing Evangeline Lilly has another Kate-centric episode coming up (holler!), which I think may work out to be episode 10. Also, for those of you wondering about her highlighted-hair look from the opening of Dominic Monaghan's photo gallery exhibit (stand by for much more on that!), it was a wig, yes, but she hadn't "pulled a Britney" and shaved her head, you silly ducklings. I saw her the night before while interviewing Dom, and it was just as brown and long and purty and real as ever.
Lost dish, please!
A little casting dish on the 11th episode: They're casting two teenagers (a boy and a girl) and a 5-year-old boy. And here's an interesting thing: The teenage girl needs to have red hair. Could it possibly be a flashback for Charlotte? Hmmm...
Dylan Walsh, Nip/Tuck
Rachel from Seattle:  Please tell me Sean McNamara will be coming back to Nip/Tuck. He can't actually be dead?!
Mr. McNamara (aka Dylan Walsh) says he will be just fine. Walsh pointed out, "On Nip/Tuck, there are miracles that happen all the time. People have major surgery and no scars. So I imagine Sean McNamara will just jump right up from that, wipe the blood off and go to the gym." I certainly hope so!
Carly in Huntsville, Ala.:  Is Psych coming back?
Sure is! And we have more deets on Shawn's long-missing mommy: She's a sexy psychologist in her mid-50s who bounces back and forth between doing work for the Santa Barbara Police Department and living abroad. But this season, she'll be hanging out with her son and stirring up some issues. OK, start the dream-casting derby. Who's the funnylady for this part?
Brian in Boca Raton, Fla.:  I'm so glad Life got picked up for another season! Any scoop?
They're adding a new cop to the team: Capt. Brian Tidwell. I'm hearing he's a rough-around-the-edges hottie. Apparently he's got a thing for sports betting, whiskey and women. Sounds like the guy is a bit of a mess, but in the most endearing sort of way.
Nina in Wilmington, Del.:  Did you watch Reaper on Thursday? I can't believe Sam's girlfriend is such a psycho freak! She hid it well.
Before I answer: How great was last week's episode? So. Freaking. Good! I hope that show sticks around, because I laughed my ass off at that whole sock/mom storyline. Just amazing writing and acting from top to bottom. Anyway, Sam's girlfriend is a total freak—and getting even more freaky. But don't worry—I don't think she'll be around much longer. Instead we'll be seeing a couple of new girls on the show. One will be in her early 20s and sounds perfect for Sam with her wicked sense of humor and mixed martial-arts skills. The other is a Canadian "immigrant" (the show actually shoots in Canada) in her 30s who starts working at the Bench and is in need of a serious makeover!
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who
Kayla in Washington, D.C.: Anything on Samantha Who?
Sam will suspect her madre, the wonderful Jean Smart, of cheating on her dad when the show returns! I wouldn't put it past her...you?
Karina in Akron, Ohio: I hear we'll be celebrating Betty's birthday when Ugly Betty comes back.
Yup, and at the hottest new restaurant in New York, no less!
Robbie in Binghamton, N.Y.:  What can you tell me about Ted's new girl Stella (besides the fact that she's being played by Sarah Chalke and that Britney Spears is her receptionist)?
She has a very tight-knit group of smart girlfriends who are going to put Ted through the ringer.
Gracie in Chambersburg, Pa.:  What will Gabrielle be up to when Desperate Housewives comes back?
Dealing with her blind honey! And don't think Miss Thing will be the overly supportive type. I'm hearing something about her returning Carlos' Seeing Eye dog, because it doesn't fit in with their lifestyle! Though that may have something to do with the fact that Carlos is not completely up front with her about his condition.

ABC to offer shows on-demand, with commercials

  • Story Highlights
  • ABC shows will be free to view on-demand, but include commercials
  • Network hopes to cash-in on profit from advertisements
  • There will be two to five minutes of commercials for an hourlong program
  • CBS has deal with Comcast, but shows don't include commercials
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- ABC said Monday it will release hit shows like "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" for free over video-on-demand cable services, with the hitch that viewers will have to sit through commercials without being able to fast-forward.
The Walt Disney Co., parent company of the network, is aiming to profit from ads sold for the video-on-demand offerings while expanding its digital strategy beyond programs distributed on its Web site, abc.com.
"We're trying to drive everyone back to television but very much understand that with everybody's lifestyles, they can't necessarily watch that way and we don't want to lose them altogether," Disney spokeswoman Karen Hobson said.
The announcement follows an agreement between ABC and its more than 200 affiliate stations around the country.
Affiliates had in the past limited the amount of content ABC could redistribute in nontraditional ways because of their concern about the ratings impact on stations. But the video-on-demand deal offers them a financial incentive to participate.
Under the deal, local affiliates will be able to sell one 30-second ad on the content, while ABC will sell from four to nine other commercials to national advertisers.
That amounts to two to five minutes of commercials for an hourlong program, compared with 17 minutes or more for a show on regular TV, Hobson said.
The agreement initially involves cable provider Cox Communications Inc., which has some 6 million subscribers, of which 3.1 million have digital set-top boxes that allow them to access video-on-demand services.
The deal follows a monthslong trial for Cox subscribers in Orange County. Some 93 percent of the users found the ads acceptable in exchange for the free service, the companies said.
Cox spokesman David Grabert said the customers mainly wanted more content.
"Anything we can do to bring greater convenience to our customers is better for us," Grabert said.
It's not the first time for a network to redistribute its shows for free over a cable company's on-demand service.
CBS Corp. announced a deal with Comcast Corp. in November 2005 to offer previously aired shows on-demand. It even sold new ads for the repurposed content to corporate sponsors, such as to automaker General Motors Corp. for old episodes of "CSI."
NBC Universal, a joint venture of General Electric Co. and Vivendi Universal, cut a similar deal with Comcast in March 2006, selling some prime-time programs for 99 cents at midnight following their broadcast and offering others for free.
ABC signed an on-demand deal with Comcast in November 2006 but limited its deal to seven markets that were both served by Comcast and had stations that were owned and operated by the ABC network. Monday's announcement would expand the on-demand offerings across the country.
Comcast, with 24.1 million television subscribers, including 15.2 million who can access on-demand services, said its on-demand offerings have helped reduce its churn rate, or the percentage of customers who drop or downgrade service after purchasing it.
"What we've seen is that the churn rate is cut in half when the customer subscribes to digital cable," said Comcast spokeswoman Jenni Moyer. "When that customer uses on-demand that churn rate gets cut in half again."
Such aftermarket resales of content are becoming a larger revenue stream for show creators like Disney, said Global Crown Capital analyst Martin Pyykkonen.
He expected that within a few years, such digital strategies would reach 5 percent of Disney's revenue, which topped $35.5 billion last fiscal year, at a relatively low cost.

At long last, a strike chart you can get excited about!

At long last, a strike chart you can get excited about!

With an end to the three-month-old WGA strike imminent (yay!), the networks have quietly begun outlining plans to salvage what's left of the current TV season. At the same time, I've been quietly picking at my moles to get a preview of those plans — the results of which appear in chart form below.

Keep in mind that the following information remains extremely tentative and is subject to change (and probably will). In other words, I strongly suggest you refresh your browser at least once an hour to ensure that you're getting the most up-to-date scoop possible.

(2-10-2008)
Letter from the President
Dear Fellow Members,

I am are pleased to inform you that this morning the WGA Negotiating Committee unanimously and unconditionally recommended the terms of the proposed 2008 MBA to the WGAW Board and WGAE Council. The Board and Council then voted unanimously to recommend the contract, and to submit it to the joint membership of WGAW and WGAE for ratification. The ratification vote will take place over the next few weeks by mail ballot and at a special membership meeting. You will receive ballot materials and a notice of informational meetings during the next week.

There is, however, another issue to address: whether to lift the restraining order, and end the strike, during the ratification process. We are asking the members to decide this issue. A vote will take place on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. A yes vote means you are voting to end the strike immediately; a no vote means you are voting to continue the strike during the ratification process. Ballots can be cast at the Guild Theater from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. If you aren't able to cast a ballot in person, proxy ballots can be downloaded at http://www.wga.org/contract_07/proxy-2008.pdf and faxed. Proxy ballots and voting instructions are at wga.org. Until the votes are counted, we are still on strike. We will announce the vote count on Tuesday night.

There will be no picketing Monday or Tuesday: all pickets are suspended until the WGA membership votes to either end or continue the strike.

Thank you for your solidarity and support. We are all in this together.

Best,

Patric M. Verrone
President, WGAW

Michael Eisner Tells CNBC, "The Strike Is Over"
During a Thursday-afternoon visit to CNBC's Fast Money, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner boldly declared the three-month-old WGA strike "over.” Pressed to elaborate, he said, "They’ve made a deal, they shook hands on a deal [and it] is going on Saturday to the constituents [for a vote]." Eisner went so far as to assert, "It's impossible that [the writers] turn it down. A deal has been made and they will be back to work reasonably soon."

The Fast Money host smartly asked Eisner if he was aware of what he was proclaiming over the airwaves, and the guest stuck to his story, saying,"I know the deal's been made and I know the strike is over. I have some friends in certain places and I believe there was a handshake [agreement] last Friday. It's possible they [the guild] will turn it down but it would be insane if they [did]."

Strike Update: What's the What Right Now?

Categories: strikewatch
WGA Strikers
Current Hollywood Box Score:
Optimism: 27
Pessimism: 14
Okay, there's no actual score, that's just my imagination, but things are looking pretty good! Some of you have requested an update on the strike front, so here's a quick rundown of where things stand:
  • The Next Big Date:  The WGA membership will meet up at the Shrine Auditorium this Saturday to review the deal that was hashed out with the AMPTP in informal talks last week.
  • Turnaround Time:  If the deal is approved, dramas could be back on the air in as few as six weeks, and sitcoms may be able to return even faster.
  • Manic Monday:  Work on some series could resume as early as Monday. We're hearing from quite a few out-of-town writers that they are flocking back to Los Angeles because they've been told by agents that their producer bosses will expect them first thing on Monday if an agreement is reached.
  • Open Questions:  The biggest issues up in the air are the where, when and how of the approval decision and how quickly, or in what manner, the governors of the WGA could repeal the strike decree. There's also a report from Nikki Finke that even if the verbal agreement is declared kosher, the actual legal documents would still need to be worked out, or the deal could die on its feet. (Yes, I love mixing metaphors. Shut up.)
  • Think Happy Thoughts:  Last but not least, the WGA membership could just plain decline to approve the deal, so there are still a lot of steps between where we stand today and the return of, say, Pam and Jim, but cross your fingers and toes!

Hey, tubers! Welcome to the last Spoiler Chat of 2007. Sigh. It flew by so fast, no? There'll be no Chat for the next two weeks because of Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (even spoiler hounds need holidays, too), but we will have updates in the column throughout that time, so be sure to check back! Now, here go your Q's...

Yellagirl in Neche, North Dakota: Seriously, the wait to find out whether Lynette's family is dead might kill me. Can you please give me some sort of hint? How could ABC do this to us? Stupid strike!
I feel your pain! Thanks to a rock-solid Desperate Housewives source, I was able to dig up what I believe to be a definitive answer (thank you, Santie Claus!), so keep reading down to the Spoiler Section below.

Kiley in Washington, D.C.: OMG, why did they put Lost on Thursdays at 9?! That's when The Office and Grey's are on! My DVR only records two shows at once. What am I going to do? What the hell were they thinking?
Whoa, whoa, whoa. No need to worry, mon amie! As Damon Lindelof himself told me, "Anywhere not against Idol is awesome." This could be just about the best thing ever to happen to Lost, because there won't be much of anything left on Thursdays by the time Lost returns Jan. 31. Check out the (heartbreaking but true) evidence of how TV is drying up:

  • The Office: The last episode written before the strike aired weeks ago (sniff).
  •  My Name Is Earl: Last ep airs Jan. 10.
  • 30 Rock: Last ep airs Jan. 10.
  • Scrubs: It moves down to the 8:30 slot Jan. 17 and airs its last prestrike episode Feb. 7.
  • Grey's Anatomy: The last ep airs Jan. 3.
  • CSI: It only has a couple episodes left.
  • Supernatural: The last ep airs Jan. 17.
  • If and when the strike breaks, it will take all these shows several weeks to get up and running, by which time Lost's eight-episode bank will be depleted.

Janice in Long Island: Is it true Dave Annable and Mary-Kate Olsen are dating?

Based on what our sources have spotted and reported back, it sure seems that way. (The words all over each other were used regarding a recent late-night club sighting.) Personally, I was hoping he and Emily VanCamp would stick together and make beautiful über-actor babies, but I guess Santa didn't get me everything on my list this year.

Nikki in Nashville, Tennessee: I heard a rumor that a couple of recent Big Brother contestants are going to be on the next Amazing Race! Is it true?
No final decisions have been made, but BB fan favorites Eric and Jessica are currently campaigning as a team. Show 'em your support.

Jenna in Wolverine Lake, Michigan: Have you heard anything about Eli Stone? When is it going to start? I just love Jonny Lee Miller!
Eli Stone starts at 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, the same night as Lost. And speaking of both those shows, Eli Stone is one of the last series remaining in production, and I just heard Katey Sagal has booked a recurring role. Not sure whom she plays, but that's good news in any case. Still, I wonder, what are the chances of her reappearing on Lost?

Beth in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: Do you know how all our favorite out-of-work actors are spending their time off?
Well, The Office’s Ed Helms, along with Bones’ Emily Deschanel and Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie, donated their time to the Strike Show, a live sketch-comedy production, last week. Korbi went to the show and said it was bananas—in a very good way. Cavemen’s Nick Kroll and 'Til Death’s Kat Foster dreamed the whole thing up and couldn’t have been funnier on such short notice. Apparently, there was a rather interesting skit starring It’s Always Sunny’s Glenn Howerton as NBC cochairman Ben Silverman. Set during the May 2008 upfronts, Howerton's studio honcho excitedly presented his net's new fall hit—which sounded an awful lot like Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman—and did a little partying...at the podium. Enough said. Word is, an encore performance or two could be in the works. I’ll definitely let you know if so, because I’m told their homage to Saved by the Bell is can’t-miss. Screech!

Michelle in Akron, Ohio: What's the deal with HBO shows like Big Love? Will their seasons be delayed because of the strike, or are they already written?
Sadly, most of our favorite cable shows will be affected by the strike, too. Even series like The Riches, which was well into production when the strike began, was unable to finish all their ordered episodes. As for Big Love, Branka Katic (waitress Ana, whom both Bill and Margene seem to have a thing for) was part of the Strike Show and said filming on the third season is postponed. The silver lining is that she’s signed on for six or seven episodes once they return.

Jenna in Charleston, South Carolina: One of my favorite shows is Top Chef on Bravo. I keep seeing commercials that it is coming in 2008. Any idea of a more specific date?
5...4...3...2...1...Utensils down, tuberinos! Top Chef is slated to take place next year in a new locale: Chicago. Word from production is that new episodes won't start airing until after March...quite possibly around the time Project Runway wraps season four. Meanwhile, a little morsel to tide you over until then: Dale, from Top Chef 3 (who actually hails from the Windy City) is dating Jack from this season of Project Runway...oh, TV love! Makes my heart sing!

Tricia in Stowe, Vermont: The Dexter finale left me absolutely stunned. Please tell me there's some chance we see Doakes again. (And as for that chick Lila, well, good riddance to bad trash. Crazy bitch got what she deserved.)
Preach it, sister. As for the future of Doakes, check out my exclusive sit-down with Erik King (Doakes himself) on the Vine, and then if you're rooting for his return, sign this here online petition, which I believe is endorsed by the good King himself.

Brooks in Northampton, Massachusetts: When will Law & Order be back on the schedule?
L&O is back with all-new eps Jan. 2, and more important, it's back with two new characters. Linus Roache plays the new courtroom prosecutor, now that Jack McCoy has been bumped up to district attorney for the city. And I must admit, after watching Sam Waterston question witnesses for an astonishing 13 years, the change is quite a shock! The other newb is the fab Jeremy Sisto (Six Feet Under), who plays a member of NYPD's intelligence unit who returns to detective duty and signs on as Ed Green's new partner.

Anne in New York, New York: Okay, so I don't have a question, but I wanted to pass along a sighting that just made my day! Kenneth the Page was roaming the midtown area right outside my office—too cute, even sans page jacket!
The cutest. I swear, just hearing about Kenneth the Page actually throws me into hysterically happy conniptions. Like Kenneth, my favorite pizza topping is "plain, but I like others." Love.

Jackie in Birmingham, Michigan: I'm annoyed about Big Shots being canceled! When will the bad news end?
Sadly, I have more.  This means the ep in which Charisma Carpenter guest starred has no airdate.

Emilie in Quebec City, Canada:  Seems like the strike won't stop anytime soon. What will we watch in January? Any suggestions?
What will we watch in January? Reality, reality, reality—and, thank heaven, a handful of pretty good midseason replacements, including Lost and Law & Order. Stop by on New Year's Day to get my winter top 21 and a complete list of premiere dates for every new show you might possibly want to watch (plus a few you don't).

Lindsay in Los Angeles: I have been an avid reader since the Wanda days. I work at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in L.A., and I thought you might be interested in the Office Standup Show that is happening here on Tuesday. The money is going to the Actors Fund. Best, L.
Best thing about the strike? That Office actors now have time to do stand-up. Awesome. Thanks so much for letting us know, Lindsay. Love, Wanda.

Hani in Jakarta, Indonesia: Are there any spoilers for Burn Notice? I can't wait until next summer!
No spoilers yet, but I can tell you that Tod Goldberg, E! Online's Cool Stuff book blogger and, you know, an actual novelist, has been contracted to write a series of original Burn Notice novels to satisfy your cravings for the show.

Kate in West Hollywood: Just wanted to let you know I was jogging in Runyon Canyon with my dog, Bella, and I spotted Damon and Carlton jogging together. Damon even smiled at Bella, and because he was nice to my dog, I swear I'll watch anything that man ever puts on TV.
Awww...the writing team that jogs together wins at life together, I'm telling you. As for Lost, you should have an easy time getting into it this year, because from what I've heard so far, season four is 18 shades of awesome.

SPOILER SECTION

TeddyGee in New Orleans: Are Tom and the kids dead on Desperate Housewives?
My source assures me they are all fine. But at least one other person is dead on Wisteria Lane. Guesses? Comment below!

Francine in Washington, D.C.: Wow! That last episode of Pushing Daisies was fantastic! Swoosie Kurtz is Chuck's mother? Really?
Yes, really. And as I teased in the last Vine show, we're also going to find out that Chuck's father is still in the picture. Can you hear Ned and Chuck's hearts mending? Yeah, those two are so not done. I'm also told this knowledge of Chuck's mama will put Olive in a verrry interesting predicament, as she has to decide whether or not to tell her. Really fantastic stuff coming up after the strike. (End it now, please?)

Vero in Budapest, Hungary: I'm so Lost in this long hiatus...Any news on Jack and Juliet?
Just that the two good doctors are still hanging out. In fact, remember those teams I told you about last week? Well, Juliet's on Team Jack, along with one other Lostie lady. Guesses on who she is?

Elo in St. Pierre, Réunion Island: Is a Sawyer and Kate baby on the way? Please, please tell me!
In honor of what is no doubt our first-ever question from Réunion Island—11,000 miles away, somewhere near Mauritius and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean!—I can tell you I used to think it was pretty unlikely, but based on what I now know about season four, it's seeming somewhat more probable. That's honestly just a guess/hunch, but I'd put some money (at least a nickel) on it. Anyone care to counter-wager? Propose a baby name?

Dandiegirl in Chino, California: What's up with Grey's? I'm digging that Mer is warming up to Lexie.
Me, too. And I hear there's some big stuff happening with Lexie in the next (and final prestrike) ep. There's also some big stuff happening with Bailey that is one of the most emotionally gripping storylines yet, and it involves Bailey's baby. I know, I know. Have the tissues handy.

Sloane in Scarsdale, New York: Can you give us the scoop on One Tree Hill?
Kate Voegele, who's a hot young musician in real life, plays someone who gets signed to Peyton's record label after another musician, played by K-Fed (oh yeah), is bumped from said label. Apparently, he comes to her show and heckles her to the effect of, "Get off the stage, ho!" (Good. Times.) Also in the new season (which, remember, takes place four years in the future) I'm hearing Brooke is doing very well, but it will be a while before we see her with a boyfriend.

Mena in Los Angeles: I'm super excited that Medium is returning in just a few weeks. It's actually the only show my mom watches on TV. What can you tell us about the new season? Is it true that Anjelica Huston will have a recurring role?
I've seen the first two eps, and they're great. Anjelica works for AmeriTips, a company crime victims can hire to supplement the official police investigation. Anjelica's character, Cynthia, reaches out to Allison—now totally out at the DA's office after last season's scandal—after Al calls in a tip about a missing child. Their initial sit-down, however, does not go well. Unfortunately, with Scanlon avoiding her calls, Devalos out of town and the new DA totally unsympathetic, Cynthia is pretty much Allison's only remaining resource.

Christina in Queens, New York: I love Lee and Allison on Medium. Any news about them?
They're pretty estranged as the season begins, but those two are never apart for long...That said, Allison and Joe seem happier than ever, and Lee's still with the blonde from the mayor's office, so I expect that pairing will be strictly subtext for a long time to come...

Stephanie in West Chester, Ohio: You keep mentioning a cliffhanger and a person physically ill on Bones. I can't figure out either! Help!
I didn't say he or she was ill

David in San Francisco: You never talk about it, but any chance you're holding out on any Stargate: Atlantis scoop?
Uh...gonna hafta throw this one to Jen's little brother, Mark, who never misses an ep and has already seen the next two. He tells you fellow fans, "Col. Carter is great as the new leader of Atlantis. She chews out a ship captain for talking down to one of her crew. She does a great job of playing on the strong yet still feminine. I think she is better in the role than Weir. But the former leader of Atlantis, Weir, now looks like she is in control of a faction of the replicators even though the Atlantis team believes they have destroyed all replicators." So, that's bad...right?

Terry in St. Paul, Minnesota: How will the writers' strike affect the Sci Fi shows, like Battlestar Galactica and Flash Gordon? With all the postproduction needed, how far along in scripts/filming are they?
Battlestar will have 14 episodes finished when season four premieres in March, and the Flash Gordon writers managed to finish the last three scripts of the season in the final four days before the strike hit. By the way, you Eric Johnson fans might be interested to know that in episode 19 he strips down to his boxers (which have little rocket ships on them—ha!) and oils himself up for a battle with an Audrey. You'll see.

Ruddy in Ipswich, Massachusetts: I cannot stand Lena on Brothers & Sisters. Tell me she's leaving the show?
I hear she is. But before she does, her dating status with Justin will be revealed at a family dinner. You can probably guess how well that goes over!

Andrea in Seattle: Season four of The Wire was mind-blowingly good. Any scoop on what season five has in store?
Wasn't it incredible? Well, the final season premieres Jan. 6 (and HBO On Demand will have it Dec. 31!) and will focus on the media's role in the workings of Baltimore, as well as following the continued struggles between the cops, the crooks, the government and the schools. More specifically, new mayor Carcetti faces some difficulties living up to his campaign promises, cold-blooded drug kingpin Marlo is looking to make some major changes in the area drug trade and Dominic West's Detective McNulty is back in plainclothes and stirring things up in his own inimitable (read: pissing everyone off) way. (West also directs an ep this season.) If you aren't watching The Wire, please do or my editor Erik will cry—it's all he ever talks about anymore.

Great '08 Televisionary: What to Watch in the New Year!

Categories: winter 2008
Josh Holloway (Lost), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)

Happy (almost) 2008, y’all!

As you prepare to whoop it up, party like a pop star and/or try your darnedest to keep your eyes open long enough to watch the ball drop, I figure it's a good time to tackle the question many of you have been in a dither about and asking for weeks now:

Will there be anything to watch in the cold and dreary winter of 2008?!

See, in case you hadn’t heard, there is a writers’ strike. And yes, many of the programs we know and love will probably be off the air for quite a while longer. But before you do something crazy like shut off your TV and pick up a book (cringe), you should know there are plenty of shows coming out in the next few months to keep your keister firmly planted on that couch!

Here, in ascending order, are our picks for the 21 most watchable new and returning series slated to come out this winter and early spring. (You can also get the full rundown listed by premiere date.) Drink 'em in!

New Amsterdam

21. New Amsterdam (Fox, Feb. 22):  Stop me if you've heard this before: The hero is a tall, dark and handsome immortal with a unique skill set that he uses to protect and defend the helpless and the innocent. While living in the shadows, he yearns for a genuine emotional connection, but true love and happiness remain a glimmering dream in the distance...It's not the most original concept in TV history, but you know what, maybe that's okay. Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is superhot, and the stories seem fun. The bad news? This show offers up a few wackadoodle scenarios that might make you giggle and/or remind you of stuff you just saw on Moonlight. Anyway, give it a shot and report back with your findings. This one could really go either way...

20. Make Me a Supermodel (Bravo, Jan. 10):  A British import that resembles the America's Next Top Model concept, this show has one major difference: the viewers vote on who stays and who goes each week. They also get to look at the likes of veteran cat walkers Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford, who'll shepherd contestants through all the episode challenges. Sorta sounds like Top Model meets Project Runway meets American Idol, right? You could do worse this winter.

19. Canterbury's Law (Fox, Apr. 11):  Julianna Margulies is back on my TV. Yay! In Canterbury's Law, she plays a fierce but chilly defense attorney. But here's the thing: Her criminal defense work is complicated by the fact that her own son was abducted and remains missing. Margulies brings an authority and confidence to the courtroom scenes, but without, thankfully, an erosion of her considerable emotive skills. The high level of actor mojo, in concert with the show's realism and elegant production design, could very well revitalize the courtroom drama genre.

18. Big Brother (CBS, Feb. 12):  Because the writers' strike rages on, the Eye net has prepared a winter edition of this summer reality staple. Rumor has it that this ninth edition may run just six weeks, instead of the usual three months. Casting is currently under way!

One Tree Hill: Sophia Bush

17. One Tree Hill (CW, Jan. 8):  Last we saw Lucas and company, high school had just ended and the future looked bright. Now, fast-forward four years: The crew's college years have come and gone, and some are finding success faster than others. Brooke's clothing design career is up and running. Luke's a published author. Nathan and Haley are the proud parents of an almost five-year-old. All the series' major players will return, along with a few new regulars who'll be driving much of the drama going down in Tree Hill.

16. The Return of Jezebel James (Fox, no premiere date):  Here are the only things you really need to know about Jezebel James: Amy Sherman-Palladino writes and produces it, and Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose star in it. As with Gilmore Girls, it's idiosyncratic, fast-paced and concerned with the adventures of two women who need each other. Unlike Gilmore Girls, however, it's filmed before a live studio audience. Can the massive talent behind the show overcome the hammy sitcom factor? Absolutely. I predict a 30 Rock scenario for this one: It'll start out a little slow but quickly gain in critical acclaim and audience loyalty.

15. Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann (ABC, Jan. 7):  Taking advantage of the popularity of Dancing with the Stars, ABC has planted a couple of the show's judges in a second reality competition. Drew Lachey hosts this battle between two dance teams, each coached and choreographed by either Bruno or Carrie Ann. As with DWTS, viewers will participate by voting for their favorite team. The losing team's leader will be forced to vote one dancer off the island every week (hopefully by saying 'You got served!'...but probably not).

14. Kyle XY (ABC Family, Jan. 14):  The show's writers were able to complete all 10 of season two's remaining episodes, so fans won't be left hanging. Did Jessi survive her cliff dive? You'll find out soon enough. You'll also learn a whole lot more about Adam Baylin's past and Kyle's future. Word is, he'll finally tell the Tragers the truth about who he really is, and the family will do everything in their power to protect him from the evil Madacorp.

13. Lipstick Jungle (NBC, Feb. 7):  Sex and the City was based on a book by Candace Bushnell; Lipstick Jungle is, too. Based on Bushnell's novel about three successful New York women who struggle to balance career and personal life, Lipstick Jungle stars Brooke Shields, 24's Kim Raver and 90210's Lindsay Price as they navigate the workplace and deal with relationships. Based on its pedigree, you'd think the show would resemble SATC, but it seems producers have taken care to avoid that. And despite being a bit unbelievable, you find yourself caring about these characters' different plights by the hour's end.

Medium: Patricia Arquette

12. Medium (NBC, Jan. 7):  Allison and the rest of the Dubois family are back for season four, but nothing is as it was. The family is struggling to make ends meet, since both Allison and Joe are out of work. Enter Anjelica Huston, as a gritty, no-nonsense private investigator who offers Allison a gig helping her solve crimes. Watching Allison work her unique magic on her flinty boss is a blast, and Jake Weber's sardonic, funny Joe stands out even more than usual as he tries to keep the family from washing out financially. Debt management and detective work have rarely been so charming. If you haven't ever seen Medium, give it a shot this season, will ya? I foresee a pleasant surprise in your future...

11. Jericho (CBS, Feb. 12):  Did you know broadcast television networks will let you have a whole show for the low, low price of 20 tons of legumes and tree nuts? It's true, and as such, the postapocalyptic drama Jericho has been magically resurrected after its ignominous cancellation in the spring of 2007. Back for seven all-new episodes, the show has shed Gerald McRaney and Pamela Reed as the parental units and reportedly features a stronger military angle and more engagement with the outside world. It should be the, uh,  bomb.

Dirt

10. Dirt (FX, no premiere date):  It's baaack. Courteney Cox's tabloid Hollywood parody returns on the first of the year, all set to dramatize and satirize the lives of L.A.'s biggest players, including Brit-Brit and K-Fed. Could there be a more warped version of these two real-life train wrecks? We're betting yes.

Prison Break

9. Prison Break (Fox, Jan. 14):  Now that the strike caused 24 to get bumped from the schedule, the pretty boys of Prison Break are back...and still stuck in Panama. Things get worse before they get better (duh). Look for more of the nasty and brutish world of Sona, trouble for Sucre, more power for T-Bag, more hotness from Whistler and, as usual, a world of pain and mayhem for Michael and Linc.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

8. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox, Jan. 14):  Steeped in Terminator  movie mythos while deftly updating the stories and introducing new characters, The Sarah Connor Chronicles might just be midseason's breakout new series. Half action-adventure, half family drama, Chronicles tells the tale of Sarah (Lena Headey), John (Thomas Dekker) and a pretty cyborg from 2027 sent back to help fight the future. Determined to bring down SkyNet—before, you know, it kills 3 billion people—the Connors (and their kooky, kickass robot friend—played by Summer Glau of kooky, kickass River Tam fame) struggle to maintain a facade of normalcy while periodically engaging in running gun battles with red-eyed fiends from the future. Very much a genre show, Terminator also manages a fair amount of sly humor and wry cultural commentary. Me likey.

Psych

7. Psych (USA, Jan. 11):  Oh, Psych, I love you so much. Even if your writing weren't whip-smart, I'd still be all up in your grill thanks to the brilliant comedy tag team of James Roday and Dulé Hill. Luckily for me and my Psych obsession, this winter season includes six all-new eps. (Woo!) Look for the boys to get entangled in a telenovela, the modeling business and an old-folks home, and I'm especially excited for the mummyriffic finale—Egyptology is totally hilarious—because it's going to be directed by Psych creator Steve Franks, and he totally loves WWK. (As previously mentioned, the feeling is so reciprocated.)

The Wire

6. The Wire (HBO, Jan. 6):  Picking up a year after the end of last season, the city of Baltimore has got major problems: The cops want that raise the new mayor promised, the schools are still a mess and the newsies at the paper struggle to compete as resources dwindle. The only people with a working business model are the drug dealers, although there might be trouble  with the hard-won truce. If you've already been watching, you know the final 10 episodes of the series can't be missed. And the rest of you? Now's your chance to watch a show that is as deep, exciting and funny as anything ever aired on TV. Plus, after a season of behaving himself, Dominic West's sexy and self-destructive Det. McNulty is drinking again, and you just know that means trouble. Uh-oh.

Eli Stone

5. Eli Stone (ABC, Jan. 31):  This is from writer-producer Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, Dirty Sexy Money). Need I say more? Okay, just in case you're curious: This legal drama is about a young, hotshot attorney who's plagued with a series of hysterical hallucinations. The visions lead him to believe he's a prophet of God, causing him to change his life. A mix of Jerry Maguire, Ally McBeal and, of course, a healthy dose of Wonderfalls, Stone could be the winter season's biggest new standout.

American Idol

4. American Idol (Fox, Jan. 15):  With the dearth of scripted TV available this season, this ratings powerhouse is poised to have its biggest year yet. Even more than usual, everyone will be watching. So, if you don't plan on watching Ryan, Randy, Simon and Paula and the gaggle of new wannabe stars in the new season, well, you may as well avoid the watercooler all winter long!

Dexter

3. Dexter (CBS, TBD):  Every dark cloud is supposed to have a silver lining, or so the saying goes. And in this dark time of the WGA strike, CBS president Les Moonves has a treat for all you basic-cable tubers who haven't yet discovered Showtime's Dexter. A drama about a Miami forensics expert who moonlights as a serial killer, this TV fare would ordinarily be considered a bit too cutting edge for network television. But with the looming holes in CBS' winter schedule, Dexter Morgan will likely slide into a plum prime-time slot. Please fight your urge to be scared off by the morbid premise. Once you get to know him, Dexter is, in fact, one of the most likable characters on the tube today.

Battlestar Galactica

2. Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi, March):  The fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica premieres in March, with 13 episodes ready for air. This season centers on the final push toward Earth, and we'll learn some shocking truths about humanity and Cylonity. Roslin battles her resurgent cancer, Starbuck battles the crew's fears about disappearance, the newly identified Cylons try to figure out what the frak is going on, Six still has baby fever, Adm. Adama does his damnedest, as usual, to keep the ragtag fleet from falling apart—and it's all going to be frakking great.

Matthew Fox, Terry O'Quinn, Michael Emerson, Lost

1. Lost (ABC, Jan. 31):  Boy, they weren't kidding when they called the season-three finale "Through the Looking Glass." In the eight produced episodes of season four, the show begins to look back at the Island, and the survivors of Oceanic 815, from distant vantage points far removed in both time and space from the crash-era story. Meanwhile, rescue arrives, in the form of Not Penny's Boat, but seeing as how it's Lost, that's not all it's cracked up to be. This year's new crop of characters (following on the heels of the tailies and the Others) are the boaties, played by a crackerjack team of actors including Jeremy Davies, Rebecca Mader, Jeff Fahey and Ken Leung. Meanwhile, the newly possible flash-forwards will reveal shocking fates (not to mention some shocking allegiances) for the survivors. In the first few eps, look for lots of hostage situations, a division of the Losties between Team Jack and Team Locke, interrogations, lies (Ben) and a couple of shootings. Just another day on the beach!

UPDATED Strike Chart: How Long Before Your Shows Go Dark?

071109strikeshows.jpg
Hugh Laurie by Adam Taylor/Fox; Heroes by Chris Haston/NBC; T.R. Knight by Scott Garfield/ABC
[UPDATED 12/20/07] There seems to be little doubt that the writers' strike will result in a shorter TV season, but just how short are we talking? Well, as you might've guessed, it varies from show to show. Those programs that are either highly efficient (Friday Night Lights) or have entered the season with a backlog of episodes (Men in Trees, Law & Order: SVU) will be in originals well into the new year. But series with tighter production schedules (i.e., nearly every half-hour comedy) will go dark almost immediately. Of course, figuring out how many episodes remain in your favorite shows' arsenals requires a lot of numbers crunching — and as I've come to learn, the only thing you Ausholes despise more than a Wednesday without AA is mathematics. With that in mind, I pulled together this incredibly handy (and 85 percent complete) cheat sheet. Keep in mind: The information below is subject to change, particularly if both sides get back to the bargaining table and resolve this frakkin' thing!
