EastEnders axe outrages US fans

Click here to see the online petition

Owen Gibson
Tuesday September 30, 2003

EastEnders: US viewers will miss the return of Dirty Den
Thousands of US viewers with a curious devotion to Albert Square have mounted a
furious campaign against the BBC after it axed EastEnders from its American
cable channel, depriving them of the chance to see the return of Dirty Den.
The soap, which has a loyal following in the US, was aired for the last time
over the weekend and fans claim they were only given a day's warning of its
demise.
Explaining the decision, BBC America, a joint venture between the corporation's
commercial arm and Discovery Networks, said the soap continued to "underperform
compared with the rest of our schedule".
EastEnders fans have been bombarding the BBC America office with letters,
emails, phone calls and faxes in protest.
They claim BBC America failed to promote the soap, which is the corporation's
most popular show on this side of the Atlantic, and has undermined its appeal by
moving it around the schedule.
Hundreds of viewers complained last year when the soap was moved to a Friday
afternoon slot to make way for lifestyle programmes such as Changing Rooms.
Furious fans inundated the BBC America website, calling for a boycott of the
channel and the reinstatement of the Sunday show.
Eventually the channel agreed to move the show to Saturday afternoons.
EastEnders in the US is three to four weeks behind the UK version in terms of
storylines.
It has a remarkably committed core of fans, who produce their own newsletters
and websites to discuss the characters' trials and tribulations.
They have posted so many messages of protest on the channel's message board BBC
America has been forced to close it down.
Liz Barron, the BBC America vice-president of programming, will take part in a
live chat with fans this evening in an effort to defuse criticism.
An online petition started last week has already attracted 4,425 signatures.
Many signatories have warned they will never watch the channel again and claim
to be tired of watching repeats of makeover shows such as Ground Force.
"British television has so much more to offer and, once again, the powers that
be at BBC America refuse to share this rich resource with American fans as well
as British expats," wrote Melissa Berry, who started the petition.
"EastEnders has a wide audience across the United States. BBC America fleetingly
promoted the show at one point and then decided this wasn't even worth the
effort.
"How can you get positive demographics on a programme when it isn't advertised
or promoted in any way?
"The US based EastEnders fans will not go down without having our voices heard -
which is something the BBCA must have thought they could avoid by not warning
any of us of the possibility that it was, once again, under consideration for
cancellation."

Hi Melissa,

I've just sent this to the above radio station in London and he read
it in its entirety on the air:

Hello Mike,

The wonders of modern technology! I'm listening to you from Boston,
MA, USA. I'm writing to you so that you will urge your listeners to
call, write or fax the BBC in order to convince them to return
Eastenders to the BBC America lineup. Our last episode, which is
three weeks behind what is currently shown in the UK, was aired last
Saturday along with the announcement that BBC America would no
longer air the program.

Various online petitions have been started (8,550 signatures to
date), BBC America and its affiliate the Discovery Channel have been
bombarded with emails, faxes, phone calls, all manner of
communications threatening to cancel their cable and satellite
subscriptions and boycott the sponsors products and services.

I know this is off your topic for this evening, but any help you can
give us, perhaps at some other point in your broadcast, would be
greatly appreciated by all the fans of Eastenders in the US.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Shirley

After he read it, he said "Allo Princess, don't worry, we'll update
you on what's going on".

Every little bit helps!

Missing 'EastEnders'
*The British soap stopped being shown in the U.S. last week, and
fans say it's like losing some dear friends.

By Lynn Smith, Times Staff Writer

The fans are shocked. Appalled. Gobsmacked.

On computers from California to Wisconsin to North Carolina, they
call it "lunacy," "disgraceful" and "a big mistake."

What began last week as a small notice on BBC America's Web site ?
that due to poor ratings, the popular British soap "EastEnders"
would be dropped Sept. 27 ? has turned into a national campaign of
passion, petitions, e-mails and faxes.

It's a usually fruitless exercise that fans of such shows as "Dr.
Quinn, Medicine Woman," "Beauty and the Beast" and even the
original "Star Trek" have nonetheless employed over the years.

Calling for boycotts of the cable channel and its advertisers, the
fans claim the corporation itself caused the poor ratings by not
promoting the show, one of the most popular in England, and
scheduling it in a way that lost viewers.

So far, 8,000 loyal fans have petitioned BBC America to continue
airing current episodes of the prime-time melodrama about the trials
and tribulations of working-class folk in London's East End. One
Colorado woman plans to hand-deliver the petition and faxes to BBC
executives in London next week.

Not only do fans feel the sting of loss, but also the insult of
timing ? canceling the show in the midst of a cliffhanger and just
before the return of a devilish character, Dirty Den. "He was
involved in some dirty dealings with the underground 14 years ago,"
explains Melissa Berry, 44, petition organizer and president of the
Western North Carolina EastEnders Fanatics, one of three fan clubs
in that state. "He was shot as he was walking along the canal. We
heard a splash, but you never saw the body hit the water."
For "EastEnder" fans, that episode is as big a deal as "Who Shot
J.R.?" on "Dallas." And in the U.K., where it aired last week, the
episode attracted 17 million viewers, a huge audience by British TV
standards.

Much older episodes also run on some PBS stations, including Orange
County's KOCE.

Prime-time soaps are almost a national pastime in Britain where
various shows are geographically tailored to specific
audiences: "Coronation Street" from Manchester, "Emmerdale Farm"
from Yorkshire and "EastEnders" from London.

"There's nothing else to do in England," says native Eastender Nikki
King, a waitress at Ye Olde King's Head Inn, a carpeted and dark
polished-wood pub in Santa Monica, and gathering spot for the large
local British expatriate community, where the news of the show's
cancellation is circulating. She finds the show dreary and
depressing but says she watched it anyway because "it's something
from home."

Over a beer in the bar, former Eastender David "Stubsy" Abbott, 49,
a stubbled man in paint-splattered clothes, says he was upset last
Saturday when he was watching a week's worth of "EastEnders"
episodes as usual and heard it would be the last show. "There was no
warning whatsoever. They didn't give no explanation," he says. "Just
when Dirty Den's coming back."

A house painter who moved to Los Angeles 15 years ago, Abbott says
he watches the show regularly because it has "things you forget
about, part of the culture you miss in America" such as Cockney
slang and honest relationships among people. "It's not about money.
It's about family and mates."

In the U.S. "EastEnders" has also found a cult following among
native-born soap lovers who prefer the ordinary, frumpy-looking
characters to the beautiful stars of Hollywood soaps. "Several cast
members are on the overweight side," says Sheree Anderson, 48, of
Baldwin Park. "They're more down to earth. Just normal people."

BBC America representatives say they have tried airing the show in
various time slots, some in half-hour evening episodes, ending with
a 2 1/2-hour omnibus program on Saturday morning, none of which
brought satisfactory Nielsen ratings. The show, they say, attracted
less than 10% of the audience of other shows such as "Ground Force
America," a reality gardening show, and "What Not to Wear," a
reality makeover show.

Skeptical protesters claim BBC America didn't promote the show
properly, which, programmers acknowledge, is its most expensive. "In
February, they stopped promoting it at all and reduced it to a 2 1/2-
hour block on Saturday when people are out running errands," Berry
says.

Last week, fans confronted David Bernath, vice president of
programming, in an online chat held to deal with what he called "the
outpouring of disappointment."

Because BBC America buys four episodes a week from the BBC, he
acknowledged "EastEnders" is the company's most expensive show,
compared with "Coupling" or "The Office," which have only six to
eight episodes a season. Even so, he added, "If 'EastEnders' was a
hit, we'd be delighted to pay for it."

A writer named "Britishfan" wrote, "EastEnders is continually at the
top of the British TV ratings! Why pull it?"

Bernath noted, "It's a great soap and we know it's hugely popular in
the U.K. That's why we brought it to America in the first place. But
not everything that is popular in the U.K. works over here."

Not every Brit loves the show. Stopping at Ye Olde King's Head in
the midst of his travels, Londoner Steve Crane, 33, says, "I hate
it. I was forced to watch it by my mum and my wife." The real East
End is a lot darker, and more racially and ethnically integrated
than what's shown, says the former teacher. "It's candy TV," he says.

Anderson says she knows some people might not understand her level
of devotion. "A lot of people like me are feeling like there's been
a death in the family," she says. She promises not to watch BBC
America until "EastEnders" returns. Like other fans, she's also
petitioning other channels to take on the show. "We want our voices
to be heard," she says. "We want them to understand we mean business
and we won't go away."

Hi All.

We are holding an EastEnders Fan Buffet Brunch in New York City on
Sunday, May 23, to benefit WLIW, the PBS station that is still
showing EastEnders. It'll be a great, fun, old fashioned, East End
knees-up with pub quiz, prizes, and maybe some surprises! And we have
some great prizes for our pub quiz; a bunch of videos of EE specials
that have never been shown here in the US!

The cost to attend this brunch is $20 (a check for WLIW), plus the
cost of your meal (set price menu; $24 including tax & gratuity), and
there will also be a cash bar.

Seating is limited, and you MUST reserve in advance. There will be no
tickets available at the door. Deadline for registration is April 22.
And here's the deal: for us to be able to book the whole large room,
we need to know we have at least 100 people by the April 22. If we
don't have 100 by 4/22, we will have only a partitioned portion of
the restaurant, and we'll be very limited seating-wise. There won't
be any room for any last minute tickets (as our restaurant of choice
is now a Hot Spot in NYC!) So even though people like to wait til the
last minute, if you think you'll be wanting to attend, please let us
know ASAP, otherwise you will likely be shut out.

To get all the information you need to register: please send your
full name, address, phone number, and e-mail address to:
dgishcabibble@...

Help us help WLIW keep EastEnders on the air!!

We are planning to have a grand old time! Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

Bad News (and a Bah-Humbug) for EE fans in NY:

Last friday night, Larry Jaffe got a phone call from a woman who
said she wanted to remain anonymous, and who claimed that
EastEnders was in "grave danger" (her words) of cancellation on
WLIW; that the new Program Director was going to pull the plug
due to money (lack of pledges). We have been trying to find out
whether this is true, or just a rumor.

Today we found out it is true.

The bottom line is: if we cannot raise $29,000 by January 31,
then Eastenders will be cancelled on WLIW. Larry has been told,
in the past, that if the plug gets pulled in the NY market, the BBC
will pull the plug everywhere else because EE will no longer be
profitable enough to market to PBS. He is checking now to find
out if this is still true, and we will update you as soon as we hear.

But this is where we are: WE NEED TO HAND WLIW $29,000 by
January 31, or that's it. EastEnders will be cancelled.

They will not be doing any on-air pledge drive - they do not feel it
will be successful. Unfortunately, EastEnders fans have not
been calling in to pledge drives in recent years. If they did, we
wouldn't be in this situation. And this is a situation where letters
and phone calls will not help. It is quite simply a matter of dollars
& cents. EastEnders pledge drives raise VERY LITTLE
compared to other drives, and EastEnders is a very expensive
show for them to purchase.

I was speaking with them about the program they recently
pre-empted EE for: a show that was just airial views of NYC.
They said that show brought in over $100,000 the first time it was
shown and 15-20K every subsequent time. Compare that to EE,
which they had to pledge for months last year to try to raise the
money needed. They just will NOT pledge it again. They want us
to prove to them that there is an audience for it: they want us to
present them with the money needed.

And that is not a bad thing actually- that they want to do it this
way. They are actually concerned about taking pledges from
fans, not being able to raise enough, and then not being able to
return the money if the drive fails. I appreciate that. I appreciate
that they don't want to rip us off. We all should. They cannot
return checks to fans, but we can.

Even though we have only a month, we are going to TRY to raise
the money. I have had conversations with Larry today, and he is
working the phones, and so am I to put together a fund drive. We
want to be able to walk into the Program Director's office on
January 31 (actually January 28, to be safe) and hand them a fist
full of checks totalling over $29,000.

We will collect the checks ALL MADE OUT TO WLIW, and if we do
NOT raise the $29,000 needed, then we will send each person
their checks back. That way, fans don't have to worry that they'll
be pledging for nothing.

And to entice donations, especially from those who live in other
areas, (who would like to help out), we are going to work this like
a raffle. Everyone who sends in a check for WLIW will have their
name put in for a drawing.

We do not know yet what ALL the prizes will be, but we are trying
to line up phone calls from EE actors!! Talk about a great prize!!
The winners would be able to have private phone conversations
with actors from the show (we already know of one long-time
castmember who will be doing it, but we won't be able to
announce who he is til next week).

This is all coming together very quickly, and in the next few days,
we'll be updating you on more details (including a club night to
be held at Swing 46, a great supper club in Manhattan, owned by
EE an fan, who will be generously allowing us to hold an event
there). We will update you on the date & time as soon as we
schedule it.

We hope that all who watch EE on WLIW (including those on
tape trains generated from WLIW) will send in a donation, (if your
membership is up for renewal, send it to us to forward to WLIW)
and we also hope that some of you in other PBS markets will
help out as well. We need all the help we can get. 29K in a
month is a tall order, and we'd appreciate all the help we can get
(from anywhere).

This is it. It's now or never.

If you would like to help keep EastEnders on the air on WLIW,
please send your tax-deductable donation, as a check made
payable to, "WLIW- Channel 21", to:

Keep EastEnders on WLIW
P.O. Box 20631
Park West Finance Station
New York, NY 10025

*** And remember, every donation of at least $50 will get you
entry to win one of the great prizes ($50 will get you 1 entry, $100
will get you 3 entries). AND if we do not raise enough money for
WLIW to renew, your checks will be returned to you.

Thanks!!

Cheers!

NEWS BULLETIN: NEW YORK STATION TO KILL EASTENDERS
Fans Have Until Jan. 31 to Come Up With $29,000

The Walford Gazette has confirmed that WLIW, the New York public
television station that has broadcast EastEnders locally since 1996,
will cease airing it by the end of February.

The station's programming manager, Joe Campbell, told me he'd keep it
on the schedule if we the fans can come up with $29,000 by January
31.

After years of similar threats from WLIW, I can say without
hesitation this time that they are not bluffing. They will take it
off at the end of February. If watching EastEnders is one of the
highpoints of your week, please help. We can save the show by coming
up with the money. So please mail by Jan. 26 your checks of $50 or
$100 made out to: WLIW, and send them to:

"Save EastEnders"
Park West Finance Station
P.O. Box 20631
New York, NY 10025

If we do not hit $29,000, your checks will be returned to you with a
self-addressed, stamped envelope and not be given to WLIW.

WLIW's Joe Campbell sent the following message:

"As I'm sure you are aware, WLIW has broadcast "EastEnders" for over
5 years. During that time, the series has developed a very loyal, but
VERY small audience. Over the years, WLIW has tried a number of
strategies to encourage these viewers to support the program.
Unfortunately these efforts have not been successful.

Since "Eastenders" is the single most expensive acquisition we make,
we can simply no longer afford to subsidize the program with dollars
contributed by other members. As a result, we will not be renewing
our contract with the BBC when it expires.

An independent effort is being made to raise the $29,000 needed to
acquire the program for 2005. Should you wish to make a contribution
you may contact Deborah Gilbert at dgishcabibble@....
Should they raise the money by the end of January, we will reverse
our decision.

Thank you again for your email and your interest in our programming.

Joe Campbell
Program Manager
WLIW/New York

Unfortunately, WLIW will not allow us to use their airwaves to help
save the show. We do have at our disposal the Walford Gazette's
database of approximately 1,300 fans in the New York metropolitan who
had subscribed at one time. We're mailing a postcard to them this
week.

Your tax-deductible contribution will enter you in a drawing for such
prizes as a telephone chat with an EastEnders actor. Already Michelle
Collins (Cindy), Leonard Fenton (Dr Legg) and Deepak Verma (Sanjay
Kapoor) are confirmed.

We are contacting celebrities such as David Bowie, Whoopi Goldberg
and Elton John, who are known to be EastEnders fans. Send me your e-
mail address to walfordgazette@... to learn about a celebrity
fundraiser in NY we plan to do in mid-January. And please note please
don't hold back your donation to find out about the celebrity
fundraiser; if you send your WLIW check in now, and then want to
attend the fundraiser, we will deduct what you have already donated
from the ticket price.

Many of us are still going through withdrawal from BBC America's
September 2003 cancellation of EastEnders. The BBC seems to be
indifferent for reasons unexplained regarding any promotion of
EastEnders. If you live outside the New York area, please keep in
mind that in the past the BBC has talked about the need for a New
York broadcast outlet to make EastEnders viable elsewhere in the
country. A BBC source tells me that some stations are safe for the
rest of 2005, but obviously the loss of WLIW does not bode well for
EastEnders' future.

I realise that given the recent tragedy in Southeast Asia, saving
EastEnders in New York may seem trivial in terms of philanthropic
support. But if you have ignored previous station pleas to
contribute, the time is now to give.

Just read the post about a New York TV station that wants Eastenders
off the air. What else are people going to watch? Major cable stations
only now air trashy programming and American soap operas could almost
rate their programming X. You see working-class folk on Eastenders.
You see slutty-clad people on the shows here in the U.S. That's why I
appreciate stations like the BBC. There is more culture and less small-
minded stupidity with shows like Eastenders than programming over here
in the states. I hope that New York channel keeps on airing
Eastenders. Keep up the good work.

I also raised a squirrell, named Oscar. However,
Oscar turned out to be a boy! I left him out near the
house, in the back yard and he often came to hang on
the tree trunk and chatter at me. Then he left and
joined the others...This was many many years ago, but
these pictures bring many memories back to and have
put a smile on my face!
