I think the smaller ship was just pushing the colony ship out of the docking
area and to a safe spot to enter flight speed.
According to Devon, it was also supposed to return to Earth and start
bringing more colonists. Since the advance ship was turning around immediately
and
heading back to Earth, the bigger ship had to have a way to start and stop
itself.
