no the advance ship was only ment to drop them off and
leave, the colony ship has its on propulsion the
initial boast was to get it off, the colony ship can
return back but probably at a slower speed then its
trip to G889

That would be assuming the smaller ship was not supposed to intercept the colonist ship and slow it down to planet-orbit speed before returning it back to...

your thinking 2-diminsional it can rotate about an axis and fire its engines in its opposite directions and slow the ship ... ...

Ok. I just re-viewed the 1st part of the "First Contact" episode. I found this: at 6 minutes & 43 seconds into the episode there is a good view of the rear end...

Ok. Maybe those two outboard barrel-shaped objects are the Colonist ship drive engines. And maybe they are capable of rotation to direct their thrust forward...

I was refering to the scene in "First Contact" where they find the #12 cargo pod and Yale states that there was to be a VTOL craft included that had be taken...
