Hi guys! I'm back. My thanks to Bobo and Professor Stokes for the
get well cards and for letting everyone know how I was doing. I'll
still be stuck in this darn back brace for some time to come, but I
am finally well enough to spend some sitting time at the computer.
It feels good to be back online.
While (literally) flat on my back, I had the opportunity to watch all
twelve episodes of the revival series DVD box set. I found it in the
bargain bin of a neighbourhood store and paid only $20 US. Our
Professor had given me a severed heads-up about oddities the discs
might have, and there were some beauties.
There are atrocious lighting errors. Our beloved vampire is seen
wandering about in a pre-cure state amidst blue sky, puffy clouds and
shadows that are anything but dark. Any novice viewer would be
going, huh?
Then there are things in the series I simply refused to buy into.
For example, there is no other character more asexual than Roger
Collins, yet we see randy Roger making the beast with two backs with
none other than Maggie. Come on! We all know Roger has only been
near a girl once, as evidenced by David's existence, and one can only
imagine how much alcohol and drugs preceded the coupling that
produced him! In the revival series Roger is a "player", a real man,
and so utterly powerful that he has made Maggie psychic. Yes, Madame
Maggie is conducting séances and seeing things!
But the character that suffered the most in the translation from the
original series is definitely Willie. Willie was never been the
sharpest knife in the drawer, but in the revival series he has
definitely lost a large number of brain cells. Think "Newhart".
Think, "Hi, I'm Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl". Yes,
he's that stupid in the revival series.
And what is up with the accents? Especially Dr. Hoffman. She sounds
like she's speaking with a combination of influences that include
Boston, London and Serbo-Croatian, (or something). In any event it
is bad with a capital "B".
I can sort of understand why NBC didn't renew the series back in the
90s. Nonetheless watching the discs was a great time waster.
I'm interested in anybody else's take on the revival series.
