Something's always bothered me about multi-doctor stories. In them the
newer Doctors always have a reverence for the older Doctors. This
makes sense in a metafiction sense, the younger actors revere their
predecessors in the role, a way of saying "you did this before me, you
made it possible for me to do this, I honor you."
But from a storytelling and time travel point of view it doesn't make
sense. The newer Doctors are the Doctor at an older age, they have
more experience than the previous Doctors. Shouldn't the older Doctors
respect the extra experience of the newer Doctors?
Imagine traveling through time and meeting yourself, who would you be
more likely to listen to. The younger version of you who doesn't have
your experience and hasn't had the chance to learn from the mistakes
you've learned from, or the older version of you who has learned from
mistakes you haven't made yet? Or to put it another way, who do you
think you'd trust more, the version of you as an adolescent who
thought they knew everything but you now know didn't know anything, or
the version of you now?
You make a good point there. I suppose it's like if I were to meet
one of my ancestors; the respect I would hold for them would be
incredible, even though I know I'm smarter and more educated.
What I wonder about our Doctor is, isn't there a limit to the number
of times he can regenerate? And (just to be snide) if he's 900
years old, how come all of his regenerations have happened in the
last 4 decades? Is he getting sloppy? tsk tsk.
Of course, to Time Lords, time isn't necessarily linear; all of the
Doctor's adventures added together could account for 900 years.
It's something I've thought about now and then, aging when you're
not really "there"; in the new series,
::::SPOILER ALERT, but not the kind that gives away plot
points:::::::
Rose comes home after being gone for a year, but for her it's only
been a few hours -- so now her boyfriend is a year older (they don't
address it in the ep, I just think of stuff like that.) Another time
she tells her mum that she'll be back in ten seconds, while it is
understood that she'll be gone a lot longer than that. So...when she
comes back, she has actually lived longer then she normally would
have at that time....It makes me worry about Hermione in the Harry
Potter books, because for an entire school year, she was using a
time-travel device to attend more classes; wouldn't that technically
make her that much older than the rest of the students in her year?
::::END SPOILER::::
Sigh. "Twelve Monkeys" is my favorite time travel movie. It goes on
the theory that what happens happens; if you come from the future to
make something happen, then it will always have happened; there is
no time line where it didn't happen. So when the Doctor goes
someplace and says, "This isn't how it's supposed to be!" it grates
on me a bit. But we also know that he doesn't know everything --
now and then, he'll have as much fun learning about something as we
do!

Okay, so I went and changed this to unmoderated messages last month. So
why does it still want me to approve messages before they're posted?
Anyone? Bueller?
I get revering your ancestors, but when the Doctor meets an earlier
version of himself it's like if you met yourself as a teenager. You
know how foolish you were as a teenager, so why would you act like
your teenage self's advice is more wise than your own?
It's been established that Timelords can regenerate 12 times. It's
been implied the Doctor will have 13 incarnations, which will
probably change when the 13th actor to play the role in the series
decides to leave. The Doctor is supposedly around 2,000 but he like
to lie about his age. It's also been implied that his travels are
more extensive than we see in the show, so what may have seemed like
a relatively short 2 years with the Sixth Doctor could have been
decades. This is actually insanely implied by all the off-shoot
material where the Sixth Doctor has had a half dozen companions
we've never heard about. But if you want to take the view that it's
all been around 4 decades, (which seems unlikely since the Doctor
was around 500 during the 2nd Doctor's time and was reported to be
over 1,000 in the 4th Doctor's time) the Doctor's been regenerating
pretty frequently because he's adopted a far more dangerous
lifestyle since he left Gallifrey. The Master, who lived an even
more dangerous lifestyle, went through all his regeneration way
before the Doctor. What's gotten to me about that is that the first
Doctor regenerated because of old age, but his classmate The Rani
was still happily in the middle of her first incarnation when they
met. So what, she was a child prodigy when they were in school and a
lot younger than him?
-
Personally the whole "WEB OF TIME" crap they've been pulling in the
Big Finish books has always grated on me. They have the Doctor
letting people die because it was supposed to happen. The 9th Doctor
implies it's okay when he saves people because he knows what he's
doing, implying that like the 7th Doctor he finds out ahead of time
when someone is supposed to live and when someone is supposed to
die. Or he has some sensitivity that allows him to figure things out.
But yeah, the whole "you can't change the past" stuff doesn't really
hold since in early Historical dramas the Doctor explained you can't
make major changes to the past because you remember them and
anything you attempt will fail, but hell, it's okay when you do it
on planets other than Earth. The show never had a consistent point
on it.

Righty-ho. So, a marathon for Saturday, March 11, to watch the 2005
series. This'll be potluck, so everybody bring something nice. We'll
order pizza (one vegan, one not) so if someone can bring sodas or items
of sugary goodness, that'd be great.
Am looking to have this go from 12 noon to whenever we get tired. Just
drop me a line so I can know who all is coming.
Another marathon, another potluck - Saturday, March 25. Again, noon
until whenever. All comers, please respond to the message so I know who
all is coming, and I'll e-mail you the address and contact number.
It'll be the new series, starting where we left off (so Father's Day
will be the first ep watched)
Since I've only had one RSVP to this Saturday's viewing, I'm cancelling
it and moving the date to NEXT Satruday 04/01. Everything else is the
same. Traaa!
Put me down for possibly a few people.

can make. Once a date has been settled on, I'll set up a poll to figure
out what to watch.
Fellow Doctor Who Fans,
Sending out a transmitions from sacramento CA, I hope this find you
all in good health. I am a long-time fan of Doctor Who and most other
science fiction. I can remeber long days of my childhood spent laid
out infront of the TV watching a flickering black and white tv while
Daleks and Cybermen chased our heros through under-budget sets... and
I was hooked.
I am so pleased that they have finaly brought back the series. For
those of you who haven't yet had the opertunity to watch the Chris E.
episodes yet... they are FANTASTIC.
Well, best to all, hope to meet up with some of you all soon.
Perhaps we can orginize some days to watch episodes.
Tom
If you all are interesed, I would be willing to help with production
design and story boards... perhaps some costume construction as well.
See my website www.parasuicidal.com to look at some of my work.

Hi Tom and Welcome!
I've been a longtime Who fan too, and sorely miss the
reruns on channel 6. I used to watch them religiously
every weekend when I was growing up here in the Sac
area.
Hope you can make it to any of the viewings.

Well, you'll probably be interested in our Who-athons, then, so go to
the poll and pick the dates that work for ya.
We should be getting the episodes for this season fairly quickly, but
ti takes time to get them on the TV as opposed to on the computer.
I'll be letting everyone know when Ken has them ready!

Hi everyone.
I hope that it's o.k. but I added 2 links to, sell, the links section.
One of them is for the new series and the other is for the classic
series of Dr. Who.
They are both cool sites.
walter
Way back in the mid-80's, I gathered with other Dr.
Who fans at a room near the PBS station in San Jose
who carried the show. That's how we were able to see
the latest episodes months before they finally reached
American shores.
Now, I'm hoping to get that feeling again. Besides,
it's a lot cheaper than having to go to Canada and see
the tenth Doctor before the Sci-Fi Channel decides to
show them.
Anyway, if you'd like to know more about me, just
visit http://360.yahoo.com/impalergeneral or my
website at http://www.geocities.com/impalergeneral
Thanks
David Mello, Sacramento
That's really cool!
Can you please keep me informed about this? I'd love to promote it,
if you'd like, on Fantastic Frontiers & Sacramento Geeks. Let me know
if there is anything you'd like put on our Events calendar, like
filming days or meetings, etc.
Thanks,

That might be nice since I think the production values for the eps we
recently shot are crap. I'll try to contact you in May when we start
meeting to work on production on the episodes we'll be filming this
summer.
