Defenders of Wesley - Group Rules
Please take a moment to read these rules. They are for the benefit of all
members, and to save your co-founders from tearing their hair out. Contact
email addresses for co-founders can be found at the end of this document.
1) Spoilers
A spoiler is information about the storyline of an episode. For example, a
spoiler for the ‘Angel’ episode ‘Five by Five’ would be ‘Wesley is tortured by
Faith, but is rescued by Angel’.
Please include spoiler space when discussing ALL episodes of ‘Angel’ season
four. This is because different parts of the world get to see the episodes at
different times, and not everyone wants to know information about episodes
before seeing them.
Please include the name of the episode which you are discussing in the title of
your post, and state this again within the body of your post.
Spoiler space should be at least 20 characters long - please press ‘return’
after each character. An example of spoiler space is below.
Spoilers for ‘Eternity’ ahead:

Angel briefly becomes Angelus thanks to a happiness drug, and attacks Wesley and
Cordelia.

Please also mark spoilers for ALL future episodes of ‘Angel’ (episodes that have
yet to air in the US and Canada) in the same way.
Please note that posts containing unmarked spoilers will be deleted and
re-posted with appropriate spoiler space and spoiler warnings.

2) Speculation
Speculation on possible future storylines is welcome, but please make sure that
it is marked as such somewhere in your post or subject line to avoid any
potential confusion. (Examples of this would be: ‘Speculation on the future of
Wesley’, ‘Speculation on possible storylines for the rest of Angel season 3'
etc.)

3) Fanfic
Please feel free to post Wesley-centric fan fiction to the group. You can
either post your fiction as you would a normal message, or upload it to the
‘files’ section of the group. However, please make sure that you include the
following, in order to ensure that Mutant Enemy don’t sue us:
i) Your name (screen name or real name) and contact email address.
ii) A disclaimer saying that you don’t own the characters in the story and that
they belong to Mutant Enemy and Joss Whedon. This is very important as
otherwise your story is in violation of copyright and Mutant Enemy and the WB
could sue us if they chose to do so. (It’s not likely that they would, but we
don’t have much money and we’d sooner not run the risk.) Stories without a
copyright disclaimer will be deleted.
iii) Spoiler warnings and space, if appropriate. Something like ‘Contains
spoilers up to [name of episode]’ is fine.
iv) Content warning and rating. Please indicate the kind of content your story
contains (i.e. if there any sexual or violent scenes, and if so, how many.)
Rate your story as if it were a film, for example G or U if the content is
suitable for all, R or 15 if there are some sexual and/or violent scenes, NC-17
or 18 if there is a lot of sex or violence. Some readers also like to be
warned if a story contains a death of any main character, or if there are
‘slash’ scenes (romance or sex between two male or two female characters.)
v) It’s not vital, but it can be helpful to state if your story deals with a
particular relationship, whether it is ‘canon’ (seen on the show) or not, for
example Wesley/Cordy, Wesley/Gunn, Wesley/Fred etc.

4) Discussions
Discussion of anything to do with Wesley, Alexis or ‘Angel’ is what we’re here
for! Discussion of ‘Buffy’ is fine too, but since it is off-topic for this
club, please mark ‘Buffy’-related posts with ‘OT’ in the subject line. Other
off-topic posts (about other actors or TV shows, about events in members’ real
lives) are fine too - please also mark with OT. This is to ensure that members
who only want to read on-topic posts (those about Wesley, Alexis and ‘Angel’)
don’t have to wade through off-topic stuff.
A few rules:
i) Obviously, no bashing of Wesley or Alexis is allowed.
ii) Criticism of other characters is fine (eg ‘I wish [character] would be more
assertive’), bashing (eg ‘[Character] is really stupid and I wish they would
die!’) is not. This club was initially set up as a haven from
character-bashing; therefore, any posts containing that kind of nastiness will
be deleted. There are plenty of other message boards where that kind of
behaviour is tolerated: I will not allow it at this club. Please ask your
co-founders if you have any further questions on this.
iii) Doyle
The ‘Kill off Wesley, bring back Doyle’ flame wars of ‘Angel’ season one were
nasty. Both pro- and anti-Wesley people got somewhat extreme, horrible stuff
was said, and this club was set up as a respite from the flame wars. We don’t
want these flame wars to start all over again, therefore no bashing of Doyle or
Glenn Quinn is allowed. The Wesley vs. Doyle thing is largely a dead issue
now, but if any Doyle fans were to visit the group and find negative remarks
about their favourite character, it could start the whole thing up again. It
doesn’t matter if you like Doyle or not (or if you’re neutral about the whole
situation) - the only prerequisite for being a member of this club is that you
like Wesley.
iv) Behaviour towards other members of the club
Sometimes, debates get heated. This is NOT an excuse to act in an abusive or
rude way towards your fellow club members. Everyone has a right to express
their opinion; please respect that right. If, however, you feel that a member
has broken any of the club rules, please let your co-founders know and we will
deal with it as quickly as possible.
v) Trolls
From time to time, most email lists and posting boards encounter trolls: the
kind of people who are silly enough to come to a Wesley club and post stuff like
‘Wesley sux! You’re all really sad!” etc. The thing they most want is
attention, so don’t give it to them. Do NOT reply to their posts, and report
them to one of the co-founders. We will delete their posts (and their
membership if necessary) and report them to Yahoo! for violation of their Terms
of Service.
vi) Discussion of actor's personal lives
Obviously this is a topic which will arise from time to time. Discussion of
anything which is already in the public domain (for example, any comments that
Alyson might make in the media about her relationship with Alexis) is fine. But
please, no speculation and nothing potentially libellous, since I don't want to
get sued. Any posts containing material which is potentially libellous will be
deleted.

5) Photos, articles and other files
i) Photos
Email attachments are NOT permitted for the group; this is so that people who
receive messages by email aren’t swamped with lots of large messages. However,
if you have a new Wesley or Alexis photo, you can add it to the photo albums.
To do this, go the main group page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/defendersofwesley/
click on ‘photos’ on the left-hand side of the page, choose an appropriate
folder (folders with 24 photos are full, so don’t choose one of those) for your
picture, and follow the instructions. If you know the source of the picture,
please add a note in the caption to say where it’s from. (The current format of
Yahoo! groups doesn’t allow much space for captions when adding pictures, but
you can go back and edit captions once you’ve added the photo.)
ii) Other files
If you have a file containing anything Wesley or Alexis-related that you wish to
share with the group, you can add it to the files section of the group. Go to
the main group page, click on ‘files’ on the left-hand side of the page, and
click either ‘add file’ or ‘create folder’, whichever you feel is appropriate.
If you’re adding a fanfic, please follow the guidelines above. If you’re adding
an interview, please state where it’s from - publication / web site, issue
number if appropriate, author if stated. If you wish, you can send a message
to the group announcing that you have added a file.
iii) Links
Members are welcome to add links to other sites, though please try to restrict
them to Wesley/Alexis-related sites if possible. Go to the main group page,
click ‘bookmarks’ on the left-hand side of the page and follow the instructions.
Please check that the link you want to add isn’t there already.

Finally, something which isn’t a rule as such, but I’d be very grateful for any
help in this area:
Promoting the group
Like I said, you don’t have to do this; only if you have time. There are two
ways you can promote the group:
i) Click on ‘invite’ on the left-hand side of the main group page. This allows
you to invite people to the club - all you have to do is enter their email
addresses. Please do NOT abuse this feature by inviting lots of people who
aren’t interested (i.e. people who don’t like Alexis or Wesley.)
Ii) If you own a site which has content relating to Wesley, Alexis, ‘Buffy’ or
‘Angel’, click on ‘promote’ on the left-hand side of the main group page. This
gives you the HTML code for a button which allows visitors to your site to sign
up for the group simply by entering their email address.

Please note that anyone who persistently violates the rules above will have
their membership deleted. [This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

spoiler for the ‘Angel’ episode ‘Five by Five’ would be ‘Wesley is tortured by
Faith, but is rescued by Angel’.

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

It was wonderful to hear of someone else who had discovered the
wonderfulness of Wesley. Honestly, I initially started off as a
Giles player in these online RPG's. About three years ago, in one of
my games, my Wesley player disappeared, and I was forced to take him
on. Not wanting to do a disservice to the character, I started
watching the epis more closely, and discovered what a gem this
character was. And as a writer for these games, Wesley is a writer's
dream come true. Every season, he's a different character. I think
of all the Jossverse characters, he grew the most from his initial
appearance on Buffy, to the last episode of Angel. I find myself
looking for different time periods to play, just to run the gambit
that is Wesley. For as sexy, and dangerous as he became in Season
4....I think the trickiest time period to write for him, is for
Season two, leading into season three. Because he's just starting to
find his legs as a leader....and while still unsure, Angel
investigations was never as successful as it was under Wesley's
leadership.

I've recently started writing Wesley in fics as well. A friend of
mine always wanted to try a Wesley/Fred/ Giles fic, and I figured
out the timeline and suggested a way to make it work. It starts with
Fred calling Giles when they couldn't find Wes (when Justine had cut
his throat). And I tell you, it was interesting to watch Wes grow
with the support of Wes and Fred, and then later with the scoobies
support. For anyone wanting to read it, the url is:

http://community.livejournal.com/meaningofheroes/

We called it that based on something Giles told Fred in the story.
That people assume those with super powers, like Angel, or Buffy are
the only heroes. And it's people like Xander and Wesley, those
without powers to call on, who still fight, knowing the
danger....THOSE are the real heroes. Honestly, the story took on a
life of it's own, but it was nice to see Wesley have a chance to
grow with the support he should have had all along. We're actually
planning a book two to this story.

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

This was so lovely to read, to hear all of your enthusiasm for Wesley
and his development. I have been trying to find music videos to share
with you which I enjoy that are about the times in Wesley's life that
you mention. (I lost all my data in February so it took a while to
find them again.) I too love S4 and Wesley's role in it. Deep Down
was such a pleasant surprise and I still love that he saved Angel,
although I do find the estrangement between Wesley and Gunn very hard
to watch as I loved their friendship in earlier seasons. (I
like 'Time Bomb' in S5 very much for the sense of them connecting
again and Illyria and Wesley's interaction.)

Do you like music videos? I'm going to take a chance that you do and
put up some links and hope that they are useful to you.

This video is one of my favourite Wesley videos:

"Why I'm Here" by Charmax (Wesley end of S3 to end of S4)

http://bronze-ambition.net/wp/?p=239

I think this is also a wonderful Wesley/Fred/Illyria video:

The Reason (Fred & Wesley and Illyria & Wesley)

http://quortoth.flannigus.net/

In both cases I think all of the videos these people have made are
wonderful. I find them very comforting, too, for some reason.

I find it hard to decide which is my favourite Wesley over the
seasons as I love the Wesley who appears in S1 of Angel, who is so
sweet and loyal and is finally in a family where there is love for
him. I love seeing his confidence develop because there are people
who believe in him and who need him to help them. S2 is very moving,
the way he and Gunn and Cordelia all bond, and I love the Pylea arc
now and how brave Fred is. I love that the first time Gunn and Wesley
see her, she is saving their lives.

I really loved her being crazy and was a bit sorry when she got
saner. 'Fredless' for some reason I can't even explain, has always
been a favourite episode of mine, and the scene in the bus station
where Fred breaks down when talking to her parents always makes me
cry. Also, it has Cordelia and Wesley being Buffy and Angel - a great
scene!

S4 is so painful and yet so beautiful to me. I love that season even
though Wesley is so estranged from the others and I do find
his 'stolen' kiss with Fred very sexy, although I am a big fan of his
relationship with Lilah too. I was so glad he had resolution with
Faith as well and that by the time he got to be her Watcher (and be
very good at his job) it no longer mattered to him whether he was
good at it or not, he was too busy doing the job to think about it. I
do think that, ironically, Wesley became someone in S4 that the
Wesley who first appears in Buffy would have been very much in awe of
and impressed by, but, of course, such experience is so painfully won
that it doesn't mean the same to the person who possesses it as it
does to the onlooker. As an onlooker though I just found damaged,
self-loathing, beautiful, sexy S4 Wesley utterly compelling and I
have never been so haunted by any character.

I love hearing from you and hearing all your thoughts on Wesley and
his development. You are making me want to watch Buffy and Angel all
over again! I do hope you like the music videos.

Best wishes,
Lori

Dear Lori,
I had hardly expected that my post would receive any reply, so I
am much surprised and overwhelmed with happy feeling. Thank you.

I live in Japan, and here we only have Buffy's first and second
seasons released in DVD, so I thought it ended completely that way.
Then sometime this March, I came across someone's talk about other
seasons and the spin-off program Angel while wandering on the
internet. I was totally at a loss for a moment then. Soon I went to
Amazon.com and found out the DVDs of the entire series and bought
them at once. At that point, I did not even kmow the existence of
Wesley. I now know there do exist enthusiastic fans of Buffy/Angel
series in Japan, very little in number because of the show release
situation here, compared to the fans in other countries, so there has
been almost no clue whatsoever on how the story develops and evolves,
so I had been spoiler-free, which was one blessing(?) to live here.
(The DVDs are all in English, plus our region code is 2, so we must
have all-region DVD player and some level of understanding English.
Nowadays, lap-top computers have "smarter" DVD slot to prevent us
from watching DVDs with different region codes. Once you watched
DVDs with certain region code for a certain times, your DVD slot is
frozen(?) to the region code and unable to watch others... Old lap-
top PC were not this way. Big companies' conspiracy!... Any way, we
must climb over these hills to watch Buffy/Angel here in Japan.)

I watched Buffy Season 3, and I liked the way Wesley was
depicted, but just did not find much to care for him. I thought it
was a pity that Wesley left the show that early as the characther
could have more to give to the show while it proceeded. But it was
that much then.

So when I finished watching Buffy and moved on to Angel series,
it was quite a smiling surprise to find Wesley back in the show. I
really liked the way he was described in his first re-appearance.
Still, I believed that the show was "Angel" and that he was given
just a little part in the show. However, I cannot describe it well
because I myself don't know how it went this way but, I had put
Wesley in the center of every event in my mind since then. Mr.
Denisof does such a magic in playing the character...the eyes, the
voice, the articulation, the subtle expressions on his face... and it
is just so convincing that Wesley seems to me to exist in real life.
As you wrote, Wesley changes along the course of the events and it
was so logical and natural. First he was good-natured, probably not
much experienced the ugliness of real life, square, proud to be a
Watcher, and so on, in Buffy series. The failure as a Watcher might
have changed him a little bit, but he seems to be a believer of some
untainted goodness in the deep bottom of his heart, in the first
parts in Angel. Then comes the 3rd season... I felt as if I was
always standing by his side, encouraging him, consoling him, telling
him to do otherwise, just like an unseen ghost. No matter what he
did, I could agree his decisions most of the time, and felt happiness
and pain just along with him.
I liked him much more in the 4th season. He has become so real
and ...please forgive me for the lack of my vocaburaly ... with the
knowledge or realization gained from his experience ... what we
humans are, what he was, what we could and couldn't..., with the
shadows he has learned about himself. I am old enough (very old
enough), biologically, but not mature enough (at all), mentally, so I
can not digest the part with him and Lilah well enough, but I do
understand it in my mind. How he felt towards her changes and how he
felt about her at the end is really beautiful and it was just what I
thought Wesley would be/do.
I liked Fred from the beginning of her appearance in the series,
and I had been wishing her to make Wesley happy every time he looked
at her and every time he spoke to her in that different tone of his
voice. I am truly glad that you mentioned the last scene with
Illyria is very beautiful and moving. Now I can watch the final
episode. (Probably I will save it till this weekend, as I don't think
I can go to work the next day I watch it.)

There are so many episodes I like. I like "Smile Time" because
of Wesley and Fred, but "A Hole in the World" is one of the best for
me, even though it is painfully heartbreaking. Everything was so
beautiful and the ending and the music does the very finishing
touch. ..."Parting Gifts" because of his first cute
reappearance..."Waiting in the Wing" gives Wesley the heartbreak but
still I like him all through in that episode... the first
episode "Deep Down" of the fourth season is another favorite one with
him emerging as someone tough with ability and with goodness,
loyalty, and love hidden or buried underneath... I like almost all
episodes... If I were to choose the season that I like best, ...
Season 4... I am just going on and on my gibberish...

I must have tired you with my nonsense written in poor English,
but thank you again for giving me your kindest words and letting me
talk about how strongly I felt about it.

The ending and the music I thought beautiful was "Shell" and not "A
Hole in the World." I just got confused. I am extremely sorry about
this.

I really enjoyed your post. It is so nice to hear from someone who
has just watched the series and to hear all of your reactions. I was
fascinated by all the changes in Wesley, too, and I felt they were
very logical, given the events, and felt like a natural consequence
of the experiences he had undergone. It felt to me, when the show
ended, that there was still a lot of development still to come,
particularly in regards to his relationship with Illyria, and what
remained in her of Fred.

I so agree with you that it would be wonderful to have an audiobook
of Alexis Denisof reading 'A Little Princess'. I would give so much
to hear him read the whole book. It's such a wonderful story and a
favourite of mine from childhood too, and he has such a gorgeous
voice.

I quite understand you not wanting to watch the last episode. It is
so upsetting. I do think the final scene between Wesley and Illyria
is very beautiful and moving, and I was very grateful to all the
actors in the final alley scene for making their reactions to hearing
what has happened to Wesley so strong.

I would love to hear more about how you felt when watching each
season. Did you know that Wesley was going to arrive in Angel or were
you unspoiled for plot developments when you were watching? Do you
have a favourite episode or season?

Lori

Hello, everybody,
I am a new member here, my first language is not English, and I
just watched the entire Buffy/Angel series (except the last episode)
on DVD, (yes, I know I am really out of date) so I have been
wondering if I am even entitled to write anything here...

I am so much moved by the way Wesley developed (is this a
correct expression?) during the course of the seasons, and I have
been fascinated by the character and the actor. I truly
enjoyed "Angel" because of Wesley. And I really wished that Fred and
he would be.... So when I saw the episodes concerning the matter, I
was so happy and then got so heartbroken. Everything was so
beautifully done, so all the more I felt sad. (Somewhere on the
internet, I had learned what's become of Wesley in the final episode,
and I do not have the heart to watch it yet. I watched other
episodes again and again, but I just can't proceed to the last one
yet.)

By the commentary for the episode "A Hole in the World," I
learned that the story Wesley was reading to Fred was "A Little
Princess." I had read it (in my mother tongue) when I was very
little, but the name of the heroin was differently written/pronounced
(it was more like "sailor" without "r" at the end) so when I was
watching the episode, I did not know it was the story.
After I learned about this, I bought the book in English and
read it. The one I read in my childhood was an abridged version, and
I now felt that I had been deprived of the beauty and essence of the
story. It was such a moving beautiful story. And I wish there were
the audio book version read by Mr. Denisof.... ( I am so late in
watching and learning about Angel, so I am sure this has already been
talked about.)

I wonder if my writing even makes sense to you, but I just
wanted to express how I felt. If you have been kind enough to read
this so far, thank you very much for your patience.

*
*

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

*

[This won’t happen without a warning: we’ll warn you
to modify your behaviour and if you don’t, you’ll be banned.] We haven’t had to
delete anyone yet in the two years the group has been in existence; don’t be the
first!

Finally finished this from way-back-when! I hope a link is okay, but
there's rather a lot of it to post directly.

TITLE: Inertia
AUTHOR: Roseveare
RATING: R for violence, language, and mild sexual content.
LENGTH: 77,000 words
SUMMARY: A novel about Wesley in the alternate universe
of 'Birthday'. Mild slash.
DISCLAIMER: Not mine, just borrowing, no profit, yadda, yadda, yadda.
NOTES: This is a complete novel about how that damaged Wesley of the
birthdayverse survives in the months following the loss of his arm.
It isn't an exhaustive catalogue of his journey in that universe;
Gunn does not appear, Angel's decline is not yet greatly apparent -
these things remain in the future. I originally intended to write
more, and I doubt this will now happen; however, nothing left hanging
was not already a part of the mystery of the backstory in 'Birthday'
and it isn't, after all, as though we don't all know how everything
turns out in this universe.
FYI: I originally posted this back in 2002-2004, for a while under
the title 'Two Years in the Life', and it remained unfinished for a
long time. I have tidied up those first 8 chapters, though they
remain essentially the same, and added the final 2. Many apologies to
anyone who was reading the original and has had to wait this long for
the conclusion.
THANKS: To the beta readers who helped me to put this together back
when it was first written. They include Kattahj, Catecumen, Mike
Dewar, Minim Calibre, and Magpie, and I am sure others who ought to
be mentioned and have been cheated by my bad habit of only
sporadically crediting betas on the chapters of the original posting.
