"Kelvington," who regularly kicks in reviews of "Doctor Who"
episodes as soon as they air on the BBC, here reviews the direct-to-
DVD movie "Dead Like Me: Life After Death," hitting shelves Feb. 17.

Two important things. The great Mandy Patinkin does not reprise his
role as top reaper Rube Sofer. More damningly, "Dead Like Me"
creator Bryan Fuller ("Wonderfalls," "Pushing Daisies") was
foolishly not invited to participate in the project.

Still, good to see the always enjoyable Ellen Muth getting a little
work!

"Kelvington" suggests the movie is not as good as the series, but
still worth picking up:

First I was a HUGE fan of the original series, "Dead Like Me". It
was well written, well done and most of all intelligent. The TV
Movie does well to try and follow in the footsteps of the series.
But it does fall a tad short. While I by no means hated this
adaptation of the show. It just didn't feel the same. Here are a few
reasons why, some spoilers contained within.

The dead don't age, they stay frozen in time, but since the show
started several years ago, when Ellen Muth was several years
younger, she has aged. They did a nice job trying to down play it,
but she got older, nothing can be done about that. However, her
voice matured, or fell victim to some heavy smoking and got a little
raspy. That could have easily been fixed in post. Did you see the
Dark Knight? They can do things with voices.

The movie begins with a comic book style explanation was very well
done and fit right in with the feel of the old show. However, the
loss of Rube the leader of the reapers played by Mandy Patinkin was
probably a loss they couldn't afford. I don't know if he didn't want
to come back to the part, or they didn't want to offer it to him.
Either way, the film suffers a bit from him not being there.

After a short recap of things past, and how death works, we see
George, played by Ellen Muth reap a soul and send it off to it's
lights. After that we meet the new boss played by Henry Ian Cusick,
you know Des from "Lost". And when I first saw him, I said, "Hey,
it's Desmond from Lost". Even though this casting was a bit off he
fit into the role nicely. We also see the new Daisy, played by Sarah
Wynter, you might remember her from "24". She did a great job
filling the gap left by Laura Harris who was not available to
reprise the role. Fortunately, we got both Jasmine Guy and Callum
Blue to come back to play Roxy and Mason, which helped the film a
immensely.

The film could easily have been called "Dead Like Me – Reapers Gone
Wild", because we get to see what happens when the reapers break the
rules, and yes even Roxy breaks the number one rule. She keeps
someone alive. It's been a while since I saw the very first "Dead
Like Me", but I clearly remember what Rube said about keeping
someone past their expiration date. When George didn't want to reap
a little girl, and said she would have eighty more years left, Rube
told her that's eighty years she wouldn't want, that souls rot and
decay if left in the body. We get to see what happens when the
reapers figure out that apparently there are no consequences for
reaps gone wrong. George spends a great deal of the movie trying to
figure out why she can't reap a soul, while Daisy will actually
break a leg to get back into acting, even if it's not her own.

The acting is top notch, Ellen seems to play the role in a much more
thoughtful way, and it really shows. I had forgotten how much I
loved this character and Muth's portrayal of her. Jasmine Guy, hits
everything so perfectly you never think for a moment she's been
doing anything but playing Roxy everyday since the series ended.

We see that the reapers haven't changed much in the past five years
and that things are pretty much normal, except their new boss is
more hi-tech than Rube, and uses Trio's instead of post-it notes.
I'm sure 3M was sorry to see the loss of that endorsement deal, but
what are you going to do.

Finally, the tone of the movie is very different than the tone of
the series, while the series had a more light touch, the movie is
much more dark in feeling and it's one of it's few faults. I think
what made the series really work was the feel, the "Wonder Falls"
meets death. It isn't until late in the film do we get a sense of
the old series. And while this is not as magical as "Pushing
Daisies" it is still worth renting or buying, and it really pisses
me off that Showtime ever canceled this show. I hope to see many
more "Dead Like Me" movies.

Just my 2¢

Dead Like Me - New DTV Feature Life After Death Announced, Along With The Complete Series Giftset, for DVD in 2009

DVD releases of both, and repackaged season sets, all available February 17th

Posted by David Lambert
10/31/2008

What could be more appropriate for a Halloween-day announcement than several DVD releases for a show titled Dead Like Me? Yes the series, which was created by Bryan Fuller (the man behind Pushing Daisies and co-creator of Wonderfalls), is getting a brand-new installment that will be released as a direct-to-video feature. Wementioned it earlier this year, but the plans to release it in 2008 have been pushed back. Now the new Dead Like Me - Life After Death film is scheduled to arrive on DVD February 17, 2009.

The new story brings back Ellen Muth as the girl named "George," who has died and become a reaper. Also returning from the series are fellow reapers Jasmine Guy (A Different World) as "Roxy" and Callum Blue (The Tudors) as "Mason". NOT returning is Laura Harris; instead her role of "Daisy Adair" has been taken over in this production by Sarah Wynter (24). Also not returning is former co-star Mandy Patankin as "Rube Sofer". Instead, we'll see Henry Ian Cusick ("Desmond" on Lost) in the new role of "Cameron Kane".

Dead Like Me - Life After Death costs $26.98 SRP, but can be pre-ordered from DVDEmpire for $19.26 as of this writing (subject to change without notice). Video will be presented in widescreen, with English - 5.1 Dolby Surround audio. Besides the 87-minute feature, there will be Audio Commentary by Ellen Muth and director Steven Herek, plus a featurette titled "Back From the Dead: ResurrectingDead Like Me".

But MGM and distributor Fox Home Video aren't stopping there! On the same date they are also releasing Dead Like Me - The Complete Series Giftset. This 9-disc set will collect the new Life After Deathdirect-to-video film, plus Seasons 1 and 2 of the series, together in one place for the first time. It will have the exact same contents, including extras, as the individual releases of Season 1, Season 2 and Life After Death. Cost is $69.98 SRP, but you can do a DVD Empire pre-orderfor just $49.68 as of this writing (again, subject to change at DVDEmpire's discretion).

MGM/Fox is also re-releasing Dead Like Me - Season 1 and Dead Like Me - Season 2 on the same date, Feb. 17th, in newly "repackaged" editions. No word yet on how the packaging will be different. The contents are the same as before, however, so this will only appeal to new fans of the show or fans who missed the previous releases. They will cost $39.98 SRP each.

Package art for these DVD titles has not been made available yet, but stay tuned and we'll bring it to you just as soon as we can! Happy Halloween, everybody...and stay safe!

I was thinking that, but didn't want to be quite so blunt.

Besides, "Hope springs eternal in the human breast: man never
is, but always to be blessed" -- so I was hanging on, however
irrationally, to the possibility "something greater" had been
revealed.

It was probably taken down because it sounds like BS. It's a straight
to DVD movie, not theatrical so there's no limited release. And
there's been absolutely nothing about Showtime picking it up as a
series again. At best, if it does well, we'll get another movie.

The text is still in Google's index (do a search for "Dead Like me" and
a few of the states that were listed) of the Wikipedia page, so it was
in there at some point. Probably removed within the last few months
since I imagine Wikipedia gets crawled pretty regularly.

Though I still agree, the notion is a bit suspect. I've never heard of a
DVD having a "limited release" -- anyone else know of any previous
examples? Even if it were, those are some odd choices. More likely, they
do it like theater releases -- start with the major metro cities, not
seemingly random states. And we'd surely have heard by now if Showtime
was considering picking the series back up.

Also, the only mention(s) I can find of this plan are quotes of the
Wiki article. Since Wikipedia articles are generally contributed to by
Joe Schmoe after he gets his information from the internet, that seems
a bit odd.

From IMDB.com boards
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1079444/board/nest/111567003):

"The movie's release date was originally July 7, 2008, however due to
a money shortage at MGM the release date was pushed back to an
unspecified point in 2009, upon which it will be released in a trial
run in certain states to test public reaction to the film. The states
the movie is to be released in are California, Illinois, New York,
Maryland, South Carolina, Arizona, Texas, Montana and Kansas. If the
movie sales are as hoped, the movie will be released nationally and
Showtime will continue with production of new episodes."

The above quote was attributed to a Wikipedia source which no longer

bum that explode and make him trip the rest of the episode? It's one
of my favorites! It is just absolutely hysterical and I really want to
download it and watch it again! I'm pretty certain that it is in
Season 1. Any help?

I am interested in reading news about the cast or crew that made Dead Like Me
“come alive” (pun intended) including, but not necessarily limited to DLM cast
and crew, and the people working to memorialize and/or continue the series.

o Yes! These people and what they do fascinates me!
o News about people involved in the creation and publication of official
content is okay, but I don't want info about fanfic, private effort or
grassroots stuff.
o If you find, organize and publish the information for me, then I might read
it.
o Get over it: DLM ended when Showtime killed the series. And don't be a
stalker.

Hi - I hope you don't mind me posting here.

I work in the film industry in Vancouver and have been clearing out my
storage locker of scripts. I have one "Dead Like Me" audition script
for the episode "Business Unfinished". It currently has a bid of 99
cents.
http://search.ebay.ca/_W0QQsassZlrh1956

I also have other scripts for "Dead Zone", "X-Files", "Battlestar
Galactica", "Glory Days", "Psych", "The Sentinel", and others we've
worked on.

Thanks so much. I'm selling my scripts to raise money for a charity
project and a film project. Your assistance is appreciated.

Zoinks! I got mine off eBay and I was tickled silly; I think I gave
$21.95 for Season 1 and 24.99 for Season 2 -- plus about 8 bucks for
shipping each time, and that doesn't include the transaction involving
the damaged set that I sent back (3 different sellers involved).

Altogether, I've got close to $75 in the set -- but I was afraid
they'd be all gone and then I'd be in the unenviable position of
trying to persuade a licensee to make a set for me after the first
publication was sold out; I could already hear the "not gonna happen."

Did I overspend? No: I feel like I got a great buy, and I'm not going
to cry over someone now getting a better buy.  I shopped around a lot;
when I made my purchases, prices were hovering in the $35-44
neighborhood before shipping, so I saved roughly half.

Yeah, I know the "value" of a dollar: I work hard to earn a pittance.
In this case, the key word is "value," and Dead Like Me is an
exceptional value. Whatever price you have to pay, the important
thing is to own it (and to have the means to watch it).

Best wishes to you and yours,
Jesse

FYI, DeepDiscountDVD.com's everyday price for each set is a tick under
$14. And shipping is free.

A new direct-to-video Dead Like Me film is supposed to be coming out later in 2008. The studio has not given it a release date so far, and the original series' lead reaper (played by Mandy Patinkin ofCriminal Minds) is out and will be replaced by Lost's "Desmond", Henry Ian Cusick. Expect stars Ellen Muth and Jasmine Guy (A Different World) to return, however.

While you're waiting for that, now would be a great time to get caught up on both seasons of the series this new production is based on, which originally aired on Showtime starting in 2003. Amazon is running a 1-Day "Gold Box" sale on them today, selling both seasons just for $15.99 each! Wow, that's a hard-to-pass offer, and it's only good for today or while supplies last. So don't let this deal die on you!

I believe the plan is to release it summer 2008 -- I've heard they're
looking at July, but I don't think that's set in stone.

Haven't heard about any definite plans to release more, but maybe if
sales go well for this one.
