According to IMDB, he has several projects out this year or in production.

Agreed. I am drawn to things that are "peculiar" and Lyle is delightfully
peculiar.

One thing great about his appearances is that it makes Dave the "victim" who has
no control in the scenario – even though we know how much he actually controls
each segment.

That sounds about right El.....doing a conventional, entertaining TV show is not
hard for Dave, but if he ventured outside more, or dispatched someone else too,
the show could really generate some more buzz.

The old NBC studio at 30 Rock lent itself better to that kind of show - even
some of us long time watchers may forget Dave's foray's through the labryinthian
hallways of 30 Rock - of course the invasions of the control room and director
Hal Gurney's schticks, invasions of KNBC news broadcasts and the infamous shout
down to Bryant Gumble doing a Today Show piece in the 30 Rock plaza. Also other
personalities with other gigs inside 30 Rock could drop into Dave's taping and
sometimes quite to his surprise.

When he moved to CBS and 11:30 to be broadcast from a stand alone studio, I
figured the show would lose most of its edge and was pleasantly surprised that
aside from the fact that Dave switched his geeky business casual outfitting with
tennis shoes to expensive suits and ties, the show maintained its flavor -
largely with an assist from the emphasis on getting to know and utilize the
local merchants. But as more and more time passes, the show grows more and more
conventional. I think he's just been mellowed out by fatherhood and his heart
surgery, and he hasn't got a strong executive producer personality on staff as
he did in the past to push him to and hold him out on the outer banks of the
mainstream.

I must agree. The show was always at it's best when it left the safety of the
script and the studio, and added the danger of the unknown from outside. These
included when the show traveled, when Mujibur & Sirajuhl traveled, when Biff
traveled, when Rupert travelled, when Dave did remotes (working the
drive-through, delivering fruit baskets), "May we see your pictures", "How's the
weather", the various reasons to go in neighboring businesses and bother the
merchants or customers, Manny and (my all-time favorite) Meg. You're very right
about the Steve Allen element, but Dave was able to add danger to that unknown
and make it even more tasty.

Some of the best bits we have now are when Andy or Biff report back from
somewhere (scripted as they are), the rare visit to the Hello Deli, the rare
phone call to actual people, the much more limited interactions with the studio
audience, Dave's Mom and his still wonderful, unscripted rants or personal
stories. They have great writers and segment producers on the show, but what
they produce is too safe and too scripted. I miss what we used to have.

Still, they blow Conan, Chin and others out of the water, and compare quite
nicely to anything that Stewart and Colbert "script".

shows was when he reached out to touch on real stories of real people - his own
and those of regular folks outside of showbiz like Manny the Hippie and Meg
Parsant and the local shop clerks and owners. Hell, Rupert is hardly ever on the
show anymore. The show now is so much more written and under too much control -
lacks the edge that it had when you didn't know what a "real person" would say
or do much less the warmth of having reular people be a regular feature on the
show. That was the "Steve Allen" touch that Dave was so famous for utilizing and
so enthusisastic to own up to. It would be great to revive the energy of the
show with less fun facts and more fun contacts outside the studio.

Yeah, I agree El Tecolote. The show was always much more entertaining when Dave
would venture outside the studio. My favorite bits were when Dave would go
outside and talk to Rupert Jee, or send an emissary out, or whoever......

You're absolutely right Ed. Honestly, I think he could quite understandably be
more hostile...heck, the fact that he does occasionally recognize Chin's
existence via various jokes etc is more than sufficient recognition, I'd say.

While it might be nice if Dave got over any bitterness toward Chin, it IS
understandable. Everyone including Dave and Johnny believed Dave would replace
Johnny, and Chin jumped through a lot of hoops to make sure it went the way it
did.

Personally, I thought Dave's remarks about Chin in that interview were "kinder
and gentler" than what he has said for the past 16 years. I don't anticipate
them guesting on each other's shows or having a sleepover, but Dave seemed to be
recalling why he befriended Chin and gave him so many appearances on "Late
Night."

I do agree with each of you. Andre Agassi vs. Kate Walsh is the ultimate
no-brainer. Agassi would be interesting EVEN IF his new book with its new
revelations had not come out. And Kate Walsh is (to me) nothing more than a
pseudo-star. She has top billing on a show that has no appeal to me.
Otherwise, she's a virtual unknown.

I think sometimes the appearance order works well in spite of itself. The guest
that appeals most to most people sits in the green room while a "star" gets the
honor of appearing first, receiving token time, and allowing considerably more
time to the guest we most wanted to see. Actually, it works best because we
don't feel cheated that they squeezed our guest short in the middle of something
interesting to bring some overhyped yutz out at the end.

And, sometimes these "stars" can really surprise. When they walk out, we care
nothing for them, but by the time they leave we are admitting that they were a
very good guest, and we look forward to their return. Such has NEVER been the
case for me with Kate Walsh. I consider every second that she is out there a
waste of opportunity. I cannot wait for her to leave so the show can regain its
energy.

And, yes, an hour with Norah Jones would be mighty nice.

Whose idea was it to make Andre Agassi the second guest. Of course if he had
been the first guest Kate Walsh would have been bumped (no big deal she never
has anything to really say anyway). You could tell how engaged Dave was and
interested in his compelling story. A lot of these awful, boring actresses and
actors probably get agreements ahead of time that they will be the lead guest.
Dave sometimes looks like he'd rather be talking to a grand jury than some of
these overrated hacks.

Sort of an old article, but a good fact-based one, written soon after the
scandal broke. It also relates the reaction of Merrill Markoe and one of Dave's
previous assistants.

Thanks for that link. It was nice to see information at a reputable source.
Some other sites will allege anything that "sells."

Todd and the rest of the group:

This article talks about the vacations and is excellent if you haven't

Well.......it's tawdry and Dave's behavior is despicable but again far
be it from me to judge. If I had Dave's kind of money and the indulgence
of so many people whose motives could be questioned, I don't know if I'd
behave any better. I think most rich, powerful men do this......it's
just Dave got caught. Again, not an excuse, just the hard truth.

Wow.....no, I didn't hear that....OK. That is crazy. No, I hadn't read that.
I saw a National Enquirer link one time but it didn't open. Well.......it's
tawdry and Dave's behavior is despicable but again far be it from me to judge.
If I had Dave's kind of money and the indulgence of so many people whose motives
could be questioned, I don't know if I'd behave any better. I think most rich,
powerful men do this......it's just Dave got caught. Again, not an excuse, just
the hard truth.
