Fox High On Dark Angel <br><br><br>Fox executives
said that they have high confidence in James Cameron's
SF television series Dark Angel, despite the pilot's
high cost, according to the [Inside] Web site.
"There's no question that that pilot was an expensive
pilot, and Jim is a pretty ambitious creator," Fox
Broadcasting Co.'s new entertainment president Gail Berman
told television critics at their annual fall preview
in Pasadena, Calif., the site reported. Fox declined
to say how much the pilot cost.<br><br><br>Berman
added, "I think that my coming into this position
is--and hopefully will be--an acknowledgement to the
creative community that we'd like to hang in there with
shows as much as we possibly can and give them an
opportunity to grow and build."<br><br><br>Fox Television
Entertainment Group chairman Sandy Grushow echoed Berman's
sentiments. "I also think, in fairness to Jim, he has been an
incredible partner," Grushow told the critics. "He's been
incredibly responsible. He brought the pilot in on time and
on budget. And there were more expensive shows that
were made this past season. I was told that The
Fugitive has an hour cost of $6 million. I can't verify
that. But so we felt very good about our investment. We
knew that by doing it, why we did it as a two-hour
[pilot], was that there's an enormous amount of foreign
money in the marketplace. ... It's actually pretty
unfair to characterize him or his show as somehow being
a sign that we're prepared to let people be
profligate. I think Jim deserves more credit than that." The
two-hour premiere of Dark Angel will air Oct. 3. *********

David Nutter, executive producer of The WB's hit show
Roswell, has taken a leave from the teen alien series to
helm the two-hour pilot of James Cameron's upcoming
Fox series Dark Angel, a spokeswoman for The WB told
SCI FI Wire. "He's on a leave of absence to direct
the pilot of Dark Angel," said Suzanne Gomez, a
spokeswoman for The WB.<br><br><br>Rumors have circulated
that Nutter will leave Roswell entirely for the new
show, but Gomez could not confirm those reports. "He's
out for the rest of the season," she said. "About
next season, we just don't know whether he'll be with
Dark Angel or Roswell." Nutter has directed several of
episodes of Roswell, including the pilot. He also
executive produces the show with Jason Katims, Jonathan
Frakes, Kevin Kelly Brown and Lisa J. Olin.<br><br><br>A
veteran of The X-Files and Millennium, Nutter also
directed the SF feature film Disturbing Behavior, which

being likened to the director's Terminator films,
according to Mr. Showbiz columnist Charles Fleming. The
series, which is on Fox's fall schedule, stars Jessica
Alba as Max, a genetically enhanced teenager in a
post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest in the year
2020.<br><br><br>Fleming quotes a TV writer who has seen footage from the
pilot as saying it looks terrific. "Visually, it's a
feature film," the writer told Fleming. "The only
question is, how do you keep that up for 22 or 24
episodes? ... The show looks hip--but more like Terminator
than Blade Runner. Cameron doesn't have much subtlety.
He kind of hits you over the head with it, and this
is no different from his film stuff." The one-hour
drama will air Tuesday nights at 9:00.
