Thank You, David ad for Hollywood Reporter
As many of you know, several fan groups are organizing 'thank you'
ads for
Mitch Pileggi, Gillian Anderson and Robert Patrick. There is also, I
believe, a project on the go to organize an ad for the whole cast and
crew
of 1013.
After much talk, with many expressions of interest, we have decided to
organize a 'thank you' ad for David Duchovny.
With the ad due to be printed in a special edition of the Hollywood
Reporter - an edition giving tribute to this culturally historical
series
to mark it's final days - we have exactly one month to design the ad,
collect the funds needed to pay for it, and put the webpage together
which
will detail the names and locations (city/state - country for those
not in
the U.S.) of all who are participating.
If you're interested in contributing funds to the ad, to be listed as
one
of those thanking David for his invaluable contribution to the
development
of the wonderful character of Mulder, and his input, hard work and
dedication to The X-Files, read on!
** Who is organizing the ad? **
Many of the same people who organized last year's private thank you
(from a
group of friends) have volunteered to lead the way on this ad for all
the
fans. Together with the wonderful Amy and Carol we have a good team
who are
working quickly behind the scenes to get things organized.
A quick run-down of who's who:
Aptmt42 (Mon) - organizer of X-Philes for Mulder, moderator of the
Duchovny
Forums, organizer and conceptual designer for the Thank You ad from
last
year
Bast Black - moderator of Duchovny Forums, and an Emmy-award winning
designer, Bast did the fabulous artwork for the ad last year
Amy - webmaster of The Haven and Digital Duchovny, long-standing DD
fan and
amazing fund-raiser for charity in the name of DD and XF in general
Cathy - fanfic author, webmaster of Chimerical Publications and
webmaster
and editor for last year's ad
Luvmulder - reknowned fanfic author, webmaster of Jackmanslanding.com
(for
Hugh Jackman fans!) and co-organiser and conceptual designer for last
year's ad
Carol - member of DDFM and Duchovny Forums, and participant in last
year's
ad
Together this group are working to set up the webpage, set up the
paypal
account, start preliminary work on the design, handle communications.
generally doing everything we can to get the wheels in motion as
quickly as
possible.
** What is the purpose of the ad? **
I think it's fairly simple - it's a thank you to David. It's a thank
you
for his hard work, his dedication, his contribution to a show we have
all
loved, which brought so many of us together. It is a thank you to him
for
the life and soul he gave to Fox Mulder, a character we adored. It is
the
expression of our feeling of the importance of David and Mulder to the
show, and the need and desire for us to express that recognition
publicly
at a time when the show is ending and, baring a possible future film,
when
this is the last we will see of these characters (excepting re-runs
and
DVDs). It is our time to look back at where it all started, to view
the
journey we've traveled together, to see where we're going from
here... to
say goodbye.
** How do we say it? **
Simply. Tastefully. Meaningfully.
There have been fun times. And we have laughed, at the show, at the
people
involved and some of their ideas at times, and even at ourselves. But
I
don't think this is the time for that. This should be a respectful
thank
you and goodbye.
** So HOW do we say it? **
Let's face it, with so many of us in the fandom, trying to cater to
everyone's wishes and ideas is just not plausible in one ad,
particularly
with so little time to get everything done. Hundreds of different
ideas on
what to say and how to say it, draw it, design it, colour it etc,
cannot be
filtered into one design that everyone will love.
So we have made a decision about the ad and how to design it, and
still
provide all of you with the opportunity to input your feelings and
thoughts
into this ad.
We're thanking David for his contribution to The X-Files. His acting.
His
writing. His directing. The hours and hours that he spent playing a
character we loved, a character who was part of a partnership which
became
a cultural phenomenon and is now a fixed figure in popular culture .
We're thanking David for Mulder.
What better way to design an ad than to say thank you, and show this
reference to Mulder?
So, this is what we want. This is how you can help us represent this.
Talk
on this list/board/forum about the symbols which identify Mulder for
you.
Is it the coat? The sunflower seeds? The 'I Want To Believe' poster?
What
physical items that can be pictorially represented remind you of
Mulder?
That embody, in part, the Mulder you have come to know and love?
Respond, and we'll read your responses. We'll read them all. We may
not use
every idea (afterall, it is only one page we have to work with! <g>)
but
your feedback on this will help us to design an ad which we hope will
reach
those objectives of simplicity, taste and meaning.
** Who is the ad from? **
Simple. David's fans. All of them. This ad is being placed from
multiple
individuals, not the groups to which they are affiliated. Our
commonality
is our admiration for David and the love we have for the character he
brought to life. Whether we're from The Haven boards, the Duchovny-
Forum,
the newsgroups, it doesn't matter. This isn't about those groups. it's
about us as a collective. And it's about David.
To that end, no group affiliations will be listed on the website
associated
to the ad. Only the individual's names and their locations will be
listed
(in alphabetical order based on first name/initials).
** What will the ad cost? **
A full-page, black and white ad in the Hollywood Reporter 10 May
edition
will cost $2,485.00.
It's not really a lot when you break it down into the possible
donations,
and if there is as much interest as there appears to be, I believe it
is
achievable to get this amount together quickly.
Look at it this way:
That's 25 people donating $100 or 50 people donating $50.00. or about
125
people donating $20.00.
I'd like to think we have the numbers amongst our fans to be able to
do
this, whatever the amount donated.
What you donate is your decision, and the ability to be part of this
is
*not* dependent on your contribution. Other than noting what is
arriving
and keeping a tally, we are not going to treat the people who donate
$20.00
any differently from those who are able to contribute more. To each
their
ability, and that is all.
** I want to be involved, what do I do? **
That's easy!

Click on the donate button. Here you will see you have two options,
to pay
either by Paypal, or by money order. (Sorry, but given the time
available,
we are unable to accept checks and wait for them to clear)
If paying by Paypal, click on the Paypal link and send your donation
to the
fund.
If paying by Money Order, email Carol at lightkeeper@...
(a
link is on the site!) to a) ask her for her snail mail addy and b)
tell
her the amount you're donating. (The latter info we help us keep a
tally on
the total funds, and take into account money yet to be received.)
Once you've organized the payment side, click on the 'Names' link.
This
email addy is provided so you can tell us how you want your name and
location details to appear on the website. You have a range of
possible
choices which are listed on the site.
It's that simple!
As time goes by, as progress is made, we will update the main page
with
details of the funds collected and the work being done. So keep the
page
bookmarked - it will be the easiest way for you to see where we're
at, and
will save us having to spend too much time away from organizing the
ad and
letting you all know what's happening.
Other than that, if you have any questions, send them to the

answer
to you as soon as possible. (Please note: some members of the
organization
committee live in a different time zone, so please don't expect an
immediate response. but we will respond as quickly as possible!)
** How soon should I send the money? **
As soon as you can. Because we've got 4 weeks - less if we want to
have a
contingency period to make sure we've done everything - the sooner
you can
contribute your donation, the better. Time is fast running out, but I
believe this is achievable.
