Navy plans $40 million fiber-optic link to Guantnamo base --$40 million project will put an underwater cable from base in southeast Cuba through Windward Passage to an undisclosed link in South Florida 04 Jul 2012 The Pentagon has decided to lay an estimated $40 million underwater fiber-optic cable from Guantnamo Bay to South Florida, The Miami Herald has learned, in the latest sign that the military is preparing for detentions and other operations at the Navy base for the long-term. A State Department spokesman would not disclose what the Cuban government was told about the project, or when. Nor would the Pentagon disclose where the cable would likely come ashore in South Florida after passing through the Windward Passage east of Cuba and emerging from the Atlantic Ocean - Key West, just 80 miles north of Havana, Miami, or somewhere else.

NATO warships move into Mediterranean Sea: Report 05 Jul 2012 A convoy of NATO warships has left Turkey for the Mediterranean Sea purportedly to carry out anti-terrorism operations in the region, a report says. According to a July 5 report published by the Turkish Hurriyet Daily, the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 set off from Istanbul. The group consists of Turkey's TCG Gediz, France's Courbet and Germany's Bayern warships and the three frigates have a total of 545 crew members on board, with Germany leading the mission. German Rear Admiral Thorsten Kahler said on Wednesday that the mission of the maritime group is "to give a clear message to terrorists in the region that NATO is on duty." [Right, NATO is protecting the region from themselves.]

Iran will duplicate captured US RQ-170 spy drone: IRGC cmdr. 03 Jul 2012 A senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Iran has gained enough information from the US drone it captured last year to duplicate the aircraft. "The American RQ-170 drone will be undoubtedly duplicated," Commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Division Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh noted on Tuesday. Rejecting foreign media reports about Iran's inability to decode drone's information, the IRGC commander said the Islamic Republic has already proven its prowess by sending codes which made the drone land on the Iranian soil.

Iran's state TV accuse BBC of hacking website to change results of nuclear poll 04 Jul 2012 Iran's state TV charged Wednesday that the BBC hacked its website to change the results of a poll about Iran's nuclear program. The BBC denied the allegation. The British broadcaster's Farsi language service reported that the poll showed 63 percent of those who took part favored halting uranium enrichment in exchange for an end to Western economic sanctions. The TV report Wednesday said the actual figure was 24 percent, and the rest favored retaliation against the West with measures like closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key to exporting oil from the Gulf.

Israel to resume W. Bank security fence construction against ICJ ruling 05 Jul 2012 Israel says it has plans to resume construction of its controversial security fence in the occupied West Bank after a five-year delay. Israel will continue construction of a separation barrier in West Bank within next few weeks after a five-year delay caused by legal appeals filed by Palestinians and international pressure, Israel's public radio quoted an army officer on Thursday as saying. Colonel Ofer Hindi, who is in charge of the barrier project, told the Israeli Supreme Court on Wednesday that work will initially begin around a group of settlements near the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

NATO tied to Muslim slaughter at Srebrenica 03 Jul 2012 One of the most brutal incidents in recent history is the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995 by a paramilitary group known as "the Scorpions." We now have a top level witness and reams of official documents that categorically prove that it was NATO ordered, not only the Dutch "stand down" that led to the killings, but recruited, paid and controlled the Scorpions as well.

Pakistan opposition parties blast govt. over NATO supply routes 05 Jul 2012 Pakistan's mainstream political opposition parties have condemned Islamabad over the reopening of supply routes for the US-led NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Leader of opposition in the country's National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, called the government's decision "a source of degradation and humiliation for Pakistan." "The inept rulers have made Pakistan a laughing stock in the world and through their latest move over reopening of the routes have made a mockery of the unanimous parliamentary resolutions," he said.

Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan vow to target NATO supply trucks 04 Jul 2012 Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan have threatened to attack trucks transporting supplies destined for the US-led foreign forces in neighboring Afghanistan, following Islamabad's agreement to end its seven-month blockade. The militants said the supplies are used to target its members fighting against occupation in Afghanistan. "We will not only attack the supplies but also kill the drivers of these trucks," Militants' spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said.

Roadside bomb hits Italian military convoy in Afghanistan 05 Jul 2012 A roadside bomb has struck a US-led Italian military convoy in Afghanistan's Herat Province. The soldiers were traveling in the Gozra district of western Herat Province when the bomb went off on Thursday. The attack comes a day after an Afghan soldier opened fire on US forces stationed in the central province of Wardak, leaving five soldiers injured.

Two German troopers wounded in northern Afghanistan 05 Jul 2012 At least two German soldiers serving with the US-led NATO forces have been wounded by Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The incident occurred on Thursday when Taliban militants targeted the soldiers in Kundoz province. However, the militants have claimed that eight German soldiers were killed during the attack. They said two vehicles belonging to the NATO forces were also destroyed.

Six arrested in terror raid near Olympic site 06 Jul 2012 Six people, including three living close to the Olympic site and a former police community support officer, have been arrested over a suspected terrorist plot. The alleged plan involved 'Islamist extremists' with potential targets in the UK, but was not linked to the Olympics, it is understood. The arrests were part of an intelligence-led operation by the Metropolitan Police counter-terror command along with armed officers, but the threat was not thought to be imminent. Five men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism and were being held at a southeast London police station, police said.

Six arrested in London over alleged terror plot 05 Jul 2012 Three brothers from Stratford - home to the Olympic Games - have been arrested in a pre-planned counter-terrorism operation. The three were among six individuals whom investigators arrested on Thursday. The group is understood to have included a former police and community support officer for the Metropolitan police, but Scotland Yard would not confirm that detail. The raids were carried out by counter-terrorism officers investigating a suspected plot to attack targets in Britain. One person was shot with a Taser stun gun and Scotland Yard said armed officers had been deployed during the arrests, which is an unusual decision and indicative of the risk counter-terrorism chiefs thought officers faced in detaining the suspects.

Maple Seed Drones Will Swarm the Future [Not if enough people *blow them out of the sky.*] 04 Jul 2012 Imagine a cheap, tiny, hovering aerial drone capable of being launched with the flick of a person's wrist and able to provide manipulable 360-degree surveillance views. It's real, it's inspired by maple seeds, and the company behind it, Lockheed Martin, envisions a future in which swarms of the new drones can be deployed at a fraction of the cost and with greater capabilities than drones being used today by the military and other agencies. "Think about dropping a thousand of these out of an aircraft," said Bill Borgia, head of Lockheed Martin's Intelligent Robotics Lab, in a phone interview with TPM.

Fukushima radiation sizzling at 10 sieverts in flooded basement of unit 1 29 Jun 2012 Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday that radiation levels exceeding 10 sieverts have been detected in the flooded basement of reactor 1 at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, a development that will hamper its decommissioning. Radiation from the basement water was found to be as high as 10,300 millisieverts an hour, a deadly intensity that will deliver the maximum annual dose in only 20 seconds and sicken anyone who is exposed within minutes. Tepco said the radiation level in unit 1, the first of the three reactors hit by hydrogen explosions and meltdowns during the crisis, is 10 times higher than in units 2 and 3, which also suffered meltdowns.

Oi's reactor 3 first to go critical after Fukushima --Utility is firing up 1.18-million-kw reactor, despite presence of hundreds of protesters there since Saturday 03 Jul 2012 Reactor 3 at the Oi power plant in Fukui Prefecture attained a self-sustaining chain reaction, or criticality, early Monday after being restarted the previous night, becoming the first in the nation reactivated since the Fukushima meltdown crisis effectively shut down the nuclear power industry. Kansai Electric Power Co.'s reactor 3 in Oi, Fukui Prefecture, was taken offline for mandatory checks in March last year. It is slated to gradually increase output and resume power transmission as early as Wednesday, and reach full operation Sunday.

Mystery Bermuda-based company and other undisclosed Romney assets hint at larger wealth 04 Jul 2012 For nearly 15 years, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's financial portfolio has included an offshore company that remained invisible to voters as his political star rose. Based in Bermuda, Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd. was not listed on any of Romney's state or federal financial reports. The company is among several Romney holdings that have not been fully disclosed, including one that recently posted a $1.9 million earning - suggesting he could be wealthier than the nearly $250 million estimated by his campaign.

9 largest US banks give regulators plans on how they'd wind down if they were to fail 03 Jul 2012 Nine of the largest U.S. banks have submitted plans offering roadmaps for how the government could break up and sell off their assets if they are in danger of failing. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. released summaries of the "living wills" on Tuesday for Bank of America, Barclays, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and UBS. More than 100 other banks are required to submit living wills by the end of next year.

Poor Land in Jail as Companies Add Huge Fees for Probation 03 Jul 2012 Richard Earl Garrett is the lead plaintiff in a class action suit against the town of Harpersville, Ala. Mr. Garrett has spent a total of 24 months in jail and owes $10,000, all for traffic and license violations that began a decade ago. William M. Dawson, a Birmingham lawyer and Democratic Party activist, has filed a lawsuit for Mr. Garrett and others against the local authorities and the probation company, Judicial Correction Services, which is based in Georgia. In Georgia, three dozen for-profit probation companies operate in hundreds of courts, and there have been similar lawsuits.

Pressure Grows on Obama Administration to Protect Polar Bears (Natural Resources Defense Council) 28 Jun 2012 The United States is in a position to help lead the world in doing just that at the next meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). There's every reason to expect the United States to lead here; two years ago, President Obama sponsored a CITES resolution to end international commercial trade in polar bear parts. But for some reason, the Administration seems to be waffling and calls for Presidential action are growing.

Greenpeace: Save Polar Bears From Homelessness 05 Jul 2012 Watching a stranded animal scrounge and starve is enough to pull at anyones heart strings. That is the imagery behind a powerful new Greenpeace video starring a homeless polar bear wondering the streets of London. The clip, featuring music from Radiohead and a voiceover by actor Jude Law, encourages individuals to join Greenpeace's campaign to "Save the Arctic" and help polar bears before they become homeless. The need to protect the natural resources in the Arctic region has come under close watch in recent months as many major oil companies have continued to show an interest in exploring their options. With already record low levels of sea ice occurring, this could mean an even faster depletion of the polar bear's habitat, leading to an increase in cannibalism within the species and threatening their existence.

Subject: Navy to deafen 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more

Hi,

The Navy is required to include comments on their Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) re: the use of high frequency underwater sound for testing in Hawaii, the California and Atlantic Coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico. According to their estimates it will deafen more than 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more over the next 5 years. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. Your signature and comment will have to be included in the EIS and could stop this Naval program, potentially saving the lives of these ocean creatures. The comments must be in by July 10, 2012.

That's why I signed a petition to U.S. Navy EIS Comments.

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Thanks!

I drive over the bridge every day on my commute to and from our Zuma office.  The lot is now a dirt pit, devoid of life.  I am saddened by the current state of the space that once was the Malibu Lagoon.  I am sorry that our efforts did not end in the protection of the lagoon, but I am happy and proud to have met some ardent conservationists and I hope we can work together on future project that will protect fragile coastal ecosystems.

Warm Regards,

Georgienne

Over the last few months Sea Save Foundation worked hard on its Rethink Malibu Lagoon Campaign.  We met many great people along the way and would like to thank everyone for their support.

Despite our strongest efforts, we did not win this battle and the bulldozers have completely removed what we considered to be Malibu Lagoon.  We hope that we were wrong and that this project will indeed restore the lagoon habitat.

Because 100% of our efforts were in fighting this battle, we want to take a few minutes now to communicate all that we tried to do
:

1. Spoke at all City Council Meetings, attended leadership meetings, and community rallies to address key concerns to city council and community members
2.  Used a daily newsletter to unite and inform the community about daily efforts and upcoming events
3. Submitted articles that were picked up by local and national media outlets.  These publications expressed our concerns, showcased the concerned of  key scientists and proposed project alternatives
4. Participated in a community event.  Work to Surf.  Key community members spoke out about the problems with the lagoon plan.
5. Leveraged Social Media to communicate our concerns and gain additional support
6. Created, promoted and maintained a petition on which we received over 10,000 signatures
7. Wrote a comprehensive research paper outlining the anticipated negative impact of the Malibu Lagoon Project
8. Flew to Sacramento to deliver the petition and research paper to Governor Brown, California Department of Parks and Recreation and California Natural Resources Agency

More About Lennox: I just heard back from George of the High Court in Ireland. He did call Belfast City Council. Basically, he was able to tell them that they have no power at this point and that they have the power to present another application. He also mentioned that he knows that there are several rehoming options. The outcome of his conversation with Belfast Council was that they now have... the same message to give callers: 1) That there are no current open ended court proceedings in place for Lennox, 2) That they can offer another application to the court for other options to be considered for Lennox. I had the feeling that George was encouraging us to continue our attempts because public opinion can be effective. I told him about the story of Prada in Tennessee... where public presence is what saved Prada absolutely. So, please continue to make calls to Belfast Council and ask them to present another application to the High Court so that Lennox can be rehomed. That is what I think is the most likely scenario that might come to fruition... Please expect a miracle.
  • From the U.S. 011-44-2890-270-270 You will have to be clever in talking with the front desk person. See if you can get to the legal services department. It might not be easy. Use your intuition as to what to say to get to the legal services department to express your request.
  • Keep emailing the Mayor of Belfast at robinsong2@...
  • All should take a moment to copy this brief note and forward it to: lordmayorsoffice@...ov.uk  .... "Dear Lord Mayor, I am adding my voice to the thousands of others requesting that the life of Lennox be spared. Please consider turning this dog over to Victoria Stilwell or Cesar Millan who have promised to relocate Lennox to the USA, see to all expenses, and provide their expert care for ...life. This simple act of compassion makes sense. Terminating an innocent life does not. Sincerely" (be sure to sign your name and provide contact information). For those who are not familiar with this case there is plenty of information to be found online (search: lennox pitbull Belfast). Immediate action is required! Lennox is due to be put down July 10th for looking like a pitbull!

World makes last desperate plea to the City of Belfast, "Save Lennox!"

Lennox in the loving arms of his family.

Under the Dangerous Dog Act (the DDA), if a dog's measurements meet a standard for "pit bull types", the dog can be seized without warrant and sentenced to death. The Belfast authorities assert that Lennox's physical measurements meet this standard, even though the dog's recorded "breed type" is not on their list of dogs banned under the DDA.

The DDA assumes that physical traits can dictate a dog's behavioral tendencies - an assumption that has been contradicted by well known dog experts and virtually every major veterinary and animal control agency worldwide - all of whom have spoken out against breed specific legislation, such as the DDA .

A recent amendment to the DDA stipulates that the dog must also be proven dangerous. However, although Lennox has no history of aggression, and had no complaints against him, the Northern Ireland courts have refused to return Lennox to his family because the seizure predated the amendment.

The saga began on May 19, 2010, when dog wardens came knocking at the Barnes front door with a warrant (which was for a different address). The Barnes are a family of model dog owners. The mother, Caroline Barnes, is a former veterinary nurse. Lennox had been had been microchipped, neutered, DNA registered as an American bulldog/Labrador, insured, and even had a valid city-issued dog license. Furthermore, Lennox was not just a beloved family pet; he served as a therapy dog and best friend for Brook Barnes, the familys disabled daughter.

In spite of all the fact that Lennoxs registered DNA type is not on the list of banned dogs, and in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, the wardens proceeded to seize Lennox from his familys home, citing him as of type as a dangerous dog

The DDA, at the time, stipulated that Lennox be put to death, based solely on his appearance. The family hired a lawyer, and began a two-year battle to save their beloved pets life; a battle which has exhausted them emotionally, and financially.

In September 2011, two expert animal behaviorists, Sarah Fisher and David Ryan, conducted separate, extensive evaluations of Lennox. Both experts came to the conclusion that Lennox is friendly and posed no danger, and presented these reports to the court.

Inexplicably, the judge dismissed both evaluations, and instead relied on the opinion of noted supporter of the DDA, Peter Tallack, whose official role in the case was described as "breed identifier." Tallack offered his completely unsubstantiated opinion that Lennox was "waiting to go off", and in a stunning disregard for the basics of jurisprudence, Belfasts Judge Rodgers agreed, referring to Lennox as "a disaster waiting to happen".

This meant that Lennox, a dog that had no history of aggression or misbehavior, was sentenced to die for a crime that hadnt happened, and which he did not commit, on the premise that he might, at some undetermined time in the future, commit that crime.

When the Barnes appealed again in late January of 2012, their case was reviewed by Judge Rodgers, who - instead of rightfully recusing himself from the case- chose not to overturn his own ruling.

Over the last two years, the Barnes' requests to visit their family pet were repeatedly denied. The authorities have refused to even tell them where Lennox is being held. They have not seen their dog since he was taken from them by the dog wardens.

Then, on June 12, 2012, Irelands highest court turned down the Barnes last appeal. It now seems that Lennoxs fate is certain, and that the City of Belfast is determined to kill Lennox, a dog who has done nothing wrong.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous offers from around the world to take Lennox out of Ireland, thereby offering the City of Belfast a way to save face. The offers have included several notable and well-known dog behaviourists and experts.

The U.K.s own Victoria Stilwell, celebrity dog trainer and star of Its Me or the Dog, has repeatedly offered to accept Lennox, and take him to live with her in the United States. Stilwell vigorously opposes breed specific legislation, calling it, "addressing the wrong end of the leash". Stilwell has offered to personally cover all the costs of re-homing Lennox with her in the United States.

Another viable re-homing offer has been extended by America celebrity dog trainer, Cesar Millan, known for his work with last chance dogs. Millan, who also stars in The Dog Whisperer, has offered to take Lennox to live with him in the United States.

Additionally, Jim Crosby, an impeccably credentialed dog aggression expert in the U.K. has presented official proposals to Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson (who has informally stated his disagreement with Lennox's death sentence on Twitter) and Northern Ireland Secretary of State Owen Paterson, whereby Crosby would visit Belfast -- on a pro bono basis -- to conduct an independent evaluation of Lennox based of his particular area of expertise.

Although Crosby is an opponent of breed specific legislation and has spoken out on behalf of Lennox, his offer emphasized that he would not criticize any preceding actions or opinions in the case.

Any of these offers should be a welcome solution to the City of Belfasts current public relations nightmare. Yet, inexplicably, the authorities have refused to meet, or even discuss, these possible ways out of their dilemma, instead preferring to press ahead with Lennoxs execution, believed to be scheduled for July 12, 2012.

The City of Belfast has also ignored an outpouring of international appeals to save the dogs life, including a "Save Lennox" petition, which has gathered over 193,000 signatures. Another, recently-created "Boycott Belfast" petition has gathered over 20,000 signatures. Additionally, thousands of people have commented through social media sites, including the City of Belfasts Facebook page (the page has recently been taken down).

In a last effort to save Lennoxs life A formal request for a royal prerogative of mercy has been made to the Queen who has the power to grant a reprieve or pardon. In a significant move, Peter Robinson, current First Minister of Northern Ireland and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has indicated that he has asked Michelle ONeill, minister of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs asking her to review the Lennox case as a "matter of urgency".

Meanwhile, somewhere in Belfast, Lennox waits to die. Alone, in a dank, concrete cell, a dog who has done nothing wrong waits to be killed simply because he looks of type. Lennox is a victim of Belfasts misguided policy and a few stubborn people who would rather take an innocent life, than admit a mistake.

The Barnes family has one final, heartbreaking request for Belfast: "We will fight for our right to say goodbye. We cannot bear the thought that Lennox will die without being reminded of the hearts and hands that love him."

Looming Health Crisis: Wireless Technology and the Toxification of America

Global Research, July 8, 2012

As a multitude of hazardous wireless technologies are deployed in homes, schools and workplaces, government officials and industry representatives continue to insist on their safety despite growing evidence to the contrary. A major health crisis looms that is only hastened through the extensive deployment of “smart grid” technology.

In October 2009 at Florida Power and Light’s (FPL) solar energy station President Barack Obama announced that $3.4 billion of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act would be devoted to the country’s “smart energy grid” transition. Matching funds from the energy industry brought the total national Smart Grid investment to $8 billion. FPL was given $200 million of federal money to install 2.5 million “smart meters” on homes and businesses throughout the state.[1]

By now many residents in the United States and Canada have the smart meters installed on their dwellings. Each of these meters is equipped with an electronic cellular transmitter that uses powerful bursts of electromagnetic radiofrequency (RF) radiation to communicate with nearby meters that together form an interlocking network transferring detailed information on residents’ electrical usage back to the utility every few minutes or less. Such information can easily be used to determine individual patterns of behavior based on power consumption.

The smart grid technology is being sold to the public as a way to “empower” individual energy consumers by allowing them to access information on their energy usage so that they may eventually save money by programming “smart” (i.e, wireless enabled) home appliances and equipment that will coordinate their operability with the smart meter to run when electrical rates are lowest. In other words, a broader plan behind smart grid technology involves a tiered rate system for electricity consumption that will be set by the utility to which customers will have no choice but to conform.

Because of power companies’ stealth rollout of smart meters a large majority of the public still remains unaware of the dangers they pose to human health. This remains the case even though states such as Maine have adopted an "opt out" provision for their citizens. The devices have not been safety-tested by Underwriters Laboratory and thus lack the UL approval customary for most electronics.[2] Further, power customers are typically told by their utilities that the smart meter only communicates with the power company “a few times per day” to transmit information on individual household energy usage. However, when individuals obtained the necessary equipment to do their own testing they found the meters were emitting bursts of RF radiation throughout the home far more intense than a cell phone call every minute or less.[3]

America's Telecom-friendly Policy for RF Exposure

A growing body of medical studies is now linking cumulative RF exposure to DNA disruption, cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and autoimmune diseases. Smart meters significantly contribute to an environment already polluted by RF radiation through the pervasive stationing of cellular telephone towers in or around public spaces and consumers’ habitual use of wireless technologies. In the 2000 Salzburg Resolution European scientists recommended the maximum RF exposure for humans to be no more than one tenth of a microwatt per square centimeter. In the United States RF exposure limits are 1,000 microwatts per centimeter, with no limits for long term exposure.[4] Such lax standards have been determined by outdated science and the legal and regulatory maneuvering of the powerful telecommunications and wireless industries.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ceased studying the health effects of radiofrequency radiation when the Senate Appropriations Committee cut the department's funding and forbade it from further research into the area.[5] Thereafter RF limits were codified as mere “guidelines” based on the EPA’s tentative findings and are to this day administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

These weakly enforced standards are predicated on the alleged "thermal effect" of RF. In other words, if the energy emitted from a wireless antenna or device is not powerful enough to heat the skin or flesh then no danger is posed to human health.[6] This reasoning is routinely put forward by utilities installing smart meters on residences, telecom companies locating cellular transmission towers in populated areas, and now school districts across the US allowing the installation of cell towers on school campuses.[7]

The FCC’s authority to impose this standard was further reinforced with the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act that included a provision lobbied for by the telecom industry preventing state and local governments from evaluating potential environmental and health effects when locating cell towers “so long as ‘such facilities comply with the FCC’s regulations concerning such emissions.’”[8]

In 2001 an alliance of scientists and engineers with the backing of the Communications Workers of America filed a federal lawsuit hoping the Supreme Court would reconsider the FCC’s obsolete exposure guidelines and the Telecom Act’s overreach into state and local jurisdiction. The high court refused to hear the case. When the same group asked the FCC to reexamine its guidelines in light of current scientific studies the request was rebuffed.[9] Today in all probability millions are suffering from a variety of immediate and long-term health effects from relentless EMF and RF exposure that under the thermal effect rationale remain unrecognized or discounted by the telecom industry and regulatory authorities alike.

Growing Evidence of Health Risks From RF Exposure

The main health concern with electromagnetic radiation emitted by smart meters and other wireless technologies is that EMF and RF cause a breakdown in the communication between cells in the body, interrupting DNA repair and weakening tissue and organ function. These are the findings of Dr. George Carlo, who oversaw a comprehensive research group commissioned by the cell phone industry in the mid-1990s.

When Carlo’s research began to reveal how there were indeed serious health concerns with wireless technology, the industry sought to bury the results and discredit Carlo. Yet Carlo’s research has since been upheld in a wealth of subsequent studies and has continuing relevance given the ubiquity of wireless apparatuses and the even more powerful smart meters. “One thing all these conditions have in common is a disruption, to varying degrees, of intercellular communication,” Carlo observes. “When we were growing up, TV antennas were on top of our houses and such waves were up in the sky. Cell phones and Wi-Fi have brought those things down to the street, integrated them into the environment, and that’s absolutely new.”[10]

In 2007 the BioInitiative Working Group, a worldwide body of scientists and public health experts, released a 650-page document with over 2000 studies linking RF and EMF exposure to cancer, Alzheimer's disease, DNA damage, immune system dysfunction, cellular damage and tissue reduction.[11]

In May 2011 the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer categorized “radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless cellphone use.”[12]

In November 2011 the Board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), a national organization of medical and osteopathic physicians, called on California’s Public Utilities Commission to issue a moratorium on the continued installation of smart meters in residences and schools “based on a scientific assessment of the current available literature.” "[E]xisting FCC guidelines for RF safety that have been used to justify installations of smart meters,” the panel wrote,

“only look at thermal tissue damage and are obsolete, since many modern studies show metabolic and genomic damage from RF and ELF exposure below the level of intensity which heats tissues ... More modern literature shows medically and biologically significant effects of RF and ELF at lower energy densities. These effects accumulate over time, which is an important consideration given the chronic nature of exposure from ‘smart meters.’”[13]

In April 2012 the AAEM issued a formal position paper on the health effects of RF and EMF exposure based on a literature review of the most recent research. The organization pointed to how government and industry arguments alleging the doubtful nature of the science on non-thermal effects of RF were not defensible in light of the newest studies. “Genetic damage, reproductive defects, cancer, neurological degeneration and nervous system dysfunction, immune system dysfunction, cognitive effects, protein and peptide damage, kidney damage, and developmental effects have all been reported in the peer‐reviewed scientific literature,” AAEM concluded.[14]

Radiating Children

The rollout of smart meters proceeds alongside increased installation of wireless technology and cell phone towers in and around schools in the US. In 2010 Professor Magda Havas conducted a study of schools in 50 US state capitols and Washington DC to determine students' potential exposure to nearby cell towers. A total 6,140 schools serving 2.3 million students were surveyed using the antennasearch.com database. Of these, 13% of the schools serving 299,000 students have a cell tower within a quarter mile of school grounds, and another 50% of the schools where 1,145,000 attend have a tower within a 0.6 mile radius. The installation of wireless networks and now smart meters on and around school properties further increases children's RF exposure.[15]

Many school districts that are strapped for cash in the face of state budget cuts are willing to ignore the abundance of scientific research on RF dangers and sign on with telecom companies to situate cell towers directly on school premises. Again, the FCC’s thermal effect rule is invoked to justify tower placement together with a disregard of the available studies.

The School District of Palm Beach County, the eleventh largest school district in the US, provides one such example. Ten of its campuses already have cell towers on their grounds while the district ponders lifting a ban established in 1997 that would allow for the positioning of even more towers. When concerned parents contacted the school district for an explanation of its wireless policies, the administration assembled a document, “Health Organization Information and Academic Research Studies Regarding the Health Effects of Cell Tower Signals.” The report carefully selected pronouncements from telecom industry funded organizations such as the American Cancer Society and out-of-date scientific studies supporting the FCC’s stance on wireless while excluding the long list of studies and literature reviews pointing to the dangers of RF and EMF radiation emitted by wireless networks and cell towers. [16]

The Precautionary Principle / Conclusion

Surrounded by the sizable and growing body of scientific literature pointing to the obvious dangers of wireless technology, utility companies installing smart meters on millions of homes across the US  and school officials who accommodate cell towers on their grounds are performing an extreme disservice to their often vulnerable constituencies. Indeed, such actions constitute the reckless long term endangerment of public health for short term gain, sharply contrasting with more judicious decision making.

The 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment & Development adopted the precautionary principle as a rule to follow in the situations utilities and school districts find themselves in today. "Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost effective measures to prevent environmental degradation."[17] In exercising the precautionary principle, public governance and regulatory bodies should “take preventive action in the face of scientific uncertainty to prevent harm. The focus is no longer on measuring or managing harm, but preventing harm.”[18]

Along these lines, the European Union and the Los Angeles School District have prohibited cell phone towers on school grounds until the scientific research on the human health effects of RF are conclusive. The International Association of Fire Fighters also interdicted cell towers on fire stations pending “’a study with the highest scientific merit and integrity on health effects of exposure to low-intensity [radio frequency/microwave] radiation is conducted and it is proven that such sitings are not hazardous to the health of our members.’”[19]

Unwitting families with smart meters on their homes and children with cell towers humming outside their classrooms suggest the extent to which the energy, telecom and wireless industries have manipulated the regulatory process to greatly privilege profits over public health. Moreover, it reveals how the population suffers for want of meaningful and conclusive information on the very real dangers of RF while the telecom and wireless interests successfully cajole the media into considering one scientific study at a time.

“When you put the science together, we come to the irrefutable conclusion that there’s a major health crisis coming, probably already underway,” George Carlo cautions. “Not just cancer, but also learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and psychological and behavioral problems—all mediated by the same mechanism. That’s why we’re so worried. Time is running out.”[20]

Subject: Update about "Oppose the Plan to Rezone Chelsea Market"

Hey Amy,

BOROUGH PRESIDENT TO VOTE ON CHELSEA MARKET UPZONING NEXT WEEK;
CITY PLANNING HEARING LIKELY TO BE SET FOR JULY 25th

Dear Friend,

There are two very important upcoming milestones in our fight AGAINST the proposed upzoning of Chelsea Market. If approved, it would allow office and hotel towers to be built atop the complex and above the High Line park (images HERE: http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/chelsea_market/gansevoort-chelsea-rend.htm).

Borough President Scott Stringer will issue his recommendations regarding the plan by next Thursday, July 18th. While the Borough President's recommendations are not binding, they can influence the process and set a tone regarding the binding votes which follow. GVSHP and our allies have urged the Borough President to recommend DENIAL of the upzoning application, which would allow developers to add 330,000 sq. ft. of space above the historic, State and National Register-listed complex.

After the Borough President issues his recommendation, the upzoning application will go to the City Planning Commission, which will hold a public hearing before voting on the plan. The City Planning Commission MUST approve the plan in order for it to move ahead. Then the plan goes to the City Council, which must also hold a public hearing before voting. The City Council must also approve the plan in order for it to move ahead, and like the City Planning Commission, also has the power to modify or amend it. The Council's decision regarding the Chelsea Market upzoning application will be largely determined by Council Speaker Christine Quinn, in whose district Chelsea Market lies.

HOW TO HELP:

WRITE TO BOROUGH PRESIDENT STRINGER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (before July 18th!) AND URGE HIM TO RECOMMEND DENIAL OF THE CHELSEA MARKET UPZONING APPLICATION > > http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/chelsea_market/chelsea-mkt-ltr.htm

Please also write to the City Planning Commission and the City Council urging them to vote 'NO' on the Chelsea Market Plan (same link as above)

SAVE THE DATE! July 25th is the likely date for the City Planning Commission hearing, and it's critical that we have a good turnout!

Please also spread the word! -- forward this e-mail, and/or share and post this flyer: http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/chelsea_market/doc/justsayno-flyer.pdf

Chelsea Market is an iconic and successful example of adaptive re-use of an historic industrial complex located within the Gansevoort Market Historic District (http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/gansevoort/gansevoort-04-11-07.htm) which GVSHP successfully fought to secure. HELP US SAVE CHELSEA MARKET! Find out more about it HERE: http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/preservation/chelsea_market/chelsea-market-main.htm, and support GVSHP's efforts HERE: http://www.gvshp.org/_gvshp/involved/donate.htm

Andrew Berman,
Executive Director

Dear T.A. Supporter,

How will YOU use Citi Bike
After months of meetings and planning sessions, NYC’s public bike share program -- Citi Bike -- is hitting the street this summer! Your outspoken support for better bicycling in the Big Apple helped to make this program a reality. Thank you!

Transportation Alternatives wants to be sure we continue to advocate for the needs surrounding your daily bicycle trips. With the roll-out of public bike share getting closer and closer, we’re interested in finding out how you plan on taking advantage of this great new public transit option.

How will YOU use Citi Bike?

Citi Bike will roll out with stations in Manhattan south of Central Park, Long Island City and in Brooklyn north of Atlantic Avenue, all the way up to Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

With more than half of all trips we make in New York less than two miles, bike share will be a NEW reliable and affordable way to get where you need to go.

In the coming year, we will continue to work hard to improve your daily bike experience and to expand bike share into neighborhoods across the city. As always, we will call on your voice and participation to help make better bicycling a reality.

Because of the support from New Yorkers like you, the bright blue Citi Bikes will soon be as iconic as a MetroCard or yellow cab. Get ready, get set…

Sincerely,

Caroline Samponaro

Crisis Relief: Dogs & Cats Get a Helping Hand in Thailand
Terri Crisp opens up about the SPCAI team’s recent work in Thailand. For eight days in June, the seven-member team of staff and volunteers worked diligently to improve the conditions for the animals and they experienced a roller coaster of emotions. This shelter for 800 to 1,000 free roaming dogs and caged cats was in bad shape, with barely any improvements since we first visited in February. Learn about the hardships, the smells, the heart-wrenching scenes, the amazing progress, what we hope to do next, and the eight animals that now have a shot at the American Dream. Kitten Season is Here; Shelters Struggle
Kitten2Due to a busy kitten season, The Newnan-Coweta Humane Society has seen a large influx of cats and kittens. Hoarding2Like so many US shelters, the Humane Society St Lucie County was faced with an influx of animals after rescuing them from a hoarding situation. When funds and space are already tight, finding a way to accommodate all of the new animals, especially those with serious medical conditions can be tough, to say the least. SPCA International helped to ease that recent burden by providing a grant to this very deserving shelter. Find Out How Our Grant Will Help

Subject: International Action Week For No Naval Base

We appeal to you to

Join an International Action Week For No Naval Base

2-9 September 2012

We appeal to the people of the world who are opposing warfare and are concerned with making the world peaceful and sustainable community.

Please take part in an International Solidarity Action (2-9 September 2012) during the World Conservation Congress 2012 which will be held in Jeju Island.

The 2012 World Conservation Congress, which is an environmental conference held every 4 years by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is to take place from 6-15 September in Seogwipo city, Jeju Island. Jeju Island is located in the southern part of South Korea, adjacent to China, Taiwan, and Japan.

However, in Gangjeong village, which is only 7 km far from the congress site, construction to build a massive naval base is being enforced. The total size of the naval base is 490,000 square meters and it will not only harm the environment but also ignite military tensions despite the opposition of a great number of villagers.

Gangjeong village in Jeju blessed with a natural environment should be preserved for the future of mankind.

Gangjeong village is a coastal town with a sacred environment and high value preservation not only in Jeju Island, but also in the world.

The Sea of Gangjeong village is designated as a national cultural treasure (natural memorial No. 442) by the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea and is adjacent to Beom Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Gangjeong village is Gods blessing natural heritage. The sea of Gangjeong is one of the major habitats of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, one of the species listed by the IUCN. It is estimated that there are only 114 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in Korea.

Gangjeong village is located between the two biggest creeks in Jeju Island and has the biggest freshwater fish habitat on the island. It provides 7080% of drinking water to southern residents in the island. As Jeju Island lacks water due to its porous basaltic land, this uncommon village is nicknamed as Il-Gangjeong which means the best Gangjeong village. Due to this character, it has been the heartland of agriculture from ancient times. Artifacts from prehistoric times showing the transformation of housing culture have been also discovered in Gangjeong. For such reasons, Gangjeong was appointed as a limited development district until the Jeju naval base construction plan was drafted.

Gureombi rock, located at the Jeju naval base construction site, is a broad flat rock with 1.2 km in length and 250m in width and it forms a greatly peculiar bedrock wetland where spring water comes upward. As Gureombi rock is a part of absolute preservation area by Jeju local government, it is home to the Government designated endangered species such as sesarma intermedium, small round frogs, Jeju saebaengi (native freshwater shrimp of Jeju Island), and clithon retropietus v. martens.

However, the Government is unilaterally enforcing the construction of the naval base without appropriate evaluation and even by easing regulations expediently or ignoring them illegally. It is clear that the naval base will not only destroy the environment of the sea of Gangjeong village, but also cause the serious destruction of the environment of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located just 2 km away from the construction site.

There is no doubt that this construction is entirely contrary to the principals of the World Conservation Congress. The efforts of the South Korean government and Jeju local government to promote Jeju island as a world environmental city, while unilaterally enforcing the construction of the naval base, is deceiving global citizens.

Actions Suggested

1. Please choose at least one day during the International Action Week (2-9 September 2012) and organize any individual or collective actions to oppose the Jeju naval base.

2. Please inform the world that the construction of the naval base in Jeju is fully contrary to the principal of 2012 World Conservation Congress. Please make calls to the World Conservation Congress member organizations and member states to express concerns about the Jeju naval base construction.

3. Please ask the South Korean government and Jeju local government to stop building the military base, revoke the naval base project, and make Jeju Island develop intact as an island of world peace.

4. It is hypocritical for Samsung, the main contractor of the naval base project, to support financially the largest environmental event in the world. Please urge Samsung C&T and Daerim, two main contractors, to stop constructing naval base in Jeju.

5. To spread this amazing event widely, please send your endorsement (with your organizations name) and your action plans to the Gangjeong international team (gangjeongintl@... ) in advance. After your actions, please kindly send your photos and videos with a simple explanation to the team as well.

6. There are many events being planned in Jeju Gangjeong village during the international action week (2-9 September 2012). If possible, please come to the village and be part of our nonviolent struggle which has continued over the last 6 years.

We greatly appreciate for your solidarity.

The following groups endorse the action:

National Groups

  • Gangjeong Village Association
  • Jeju Pan-Island Committee for Stop of Military Base and for Realization of Peace Island (26 organizations)
  • Korea Environment NGO Network (36 Korean environmental NGOs)
  • National Network of Korean Civil Society for Opposing to the Naval Base in Jeju Island (125 Korean civil society organizations)

International Groups

Please send your endorsement (organizations name) and send it to gangjeongintl@... . We will collect all international groups endorsement and list your names here.

Background

Jeju Island should remain an Island of World Peace, not an outpost of war

In 2005, the South Korean Government declared Jeju Island an Island of World Peace. At that time, the Government explained that the purpose was to succeed the spirit of historical summits for diplomacy during the post-Cold war era the previous chief secretary of the Soviet union, Gorbachevs visit in Jeju island (1991), the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Russia (1991), the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China (1992) and afterward the first visit of Jiang Zemin, the previous chief secretary of the Peoples Republic of China, to Jeju island (1995), and cabinet-level talks between North and South Korea--and to contribute to world peace. Furthermore, in the Declaration for the Island of World Peace, two proposals were included. The first was to inherit the three traditions of Jeju Island (no beggar, no thief, and no gate) and the second was to recognize the tragic historical 4.3 massacre, which more than one-eighth of Jeju islanders were massacred in the name of red-hunting.

However, the current naval base construction enforced by the South Korean Government to militarize Jeju and the East China Sea in the name of naval security plays a part to threaten peace and prosperity in the areas. Over the last few years the South Korean government and its Navy have called themselves sub-partners of the Northeast Naval Strategy led by the US administration and strengthened the military cooperation among South Korea, the US, and Japan. The naval base in Jeju will function as an outpost of this plan. In this naval base, US nuclear-powered submarine, nuclear aircraft carrier as well as Aegis missile-carrying warships may berth.

The reason to name Jeju Island as an Island of World Peace is to make the island a hub of exchange and cooperation in Northeast Asia and convert the East China Sea into sea of peace and co-existence. The construction of the naval base is fundamentally contrary to these visions. Thus, it is crucial to protect the island from becoming an outpost of warfare. Jeju Island should be developed as a world peace island.

CITY COUNCIL VOTE ON NYU EXPANSION
EXPECTED TUESDAY --
PLEASE CALL THE COUNCIL TODAY

AND MONDAY!

Dear Friend,

FooterTHIS IS IT -- THE CITY COUNCIL'S LAND USE COMMITTEE IS EXPECTED TO VOTE ON NYU'S MASSIVE PROPOSED VILLAGE EXPANSION PLAN NEXT TUESDAY, JULY 17th! While the full City Council likely won't vote until June 25th, THIS IS THE KEY VOTE IN DETERMINING WHAT THE COUNCIL WILL DO -- AND IT IS THE CITY COUNCIL WHICH DECIDES WHETHER OR NOT THE NYU PLAN IS APPROVED.

That's why it's critical that you call members of the Council's Land Use Committee today and Monday, before the vote, URGING THEM TO VOTE 'NO'.

We've heard from many Councilmembers how effective our phone campaign was before the hearing, NOW WE HAVE TO HIT THEM AGAIN BEFORE THEY VOTE.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Call Speaker Chin, Councilmember Chin, and every member of the City Council Land Use Committee TODAY and urge them to VOTE 'NO' on the NYU expansion plan -- CLICK HERE or see below for phone numbers and script.
  • Forward this to friends, family, and neighbors and ask them to call as well!

You can find out more about the NYU plan and the fight to stop it HERE, and support this and other GVSHP preservation efforts HERE.

Sincerely,

Andrew Berman

Executive Director

PLEASE CALL THE FOLLOWING CITY COUNCILMEMBERS
BEFORE TUESDAY, JULY 17.

If one of them is your City Councilmember, please identify yourself as their constituent - if you are not sure who your Councilmember is, click HERE.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: "My name is _________ and I am calling because I am strongly opposed to the NYU expansion plan the City Council will be voting on. Who should I speak to about this?

(if any office says the Councilmember will vote 'NO,' thank them for his/her support, and call the next one)

I strongly urge the Councilmember to vote 'NO' on the NYU plan and send it back to the drawing board (if this is your Councilmember, say so here).  I am opposed to any public park space being sold off  to NYU. I am opposed to any upzoning of the neighborhood to allow additional development by NYU where it does not belong. I am opposed to breaking any urban renewal agreements that govern how the land NYU now owns can be used.  NYU's neighbors, its faculty, and its staff are all united in opposing this plan.  NYU has not listened to any of us, has not demonstrated the need for locating these facilities here, and has not explored alternatives.  The only right thing for the Council to do is vote the NYU plan down."

FROM LISA
It is one week ago today that Carmichael was hit by a car in central Los Angeles and rushed to Advanced Critical Care in Culver City. He has made amazing progress since then, but not without some bumps in the road. And, although he is doing... very well over all, today we hit a pretty major bump. Dr. Cohn at ACC told me it is now apparent that he has a severe misalignment of his upper and lower ja...w, which was not evident at first since the large amount of swelling in his whole head was holding everything more or less in place. Eventually this problem could lead to him having trouble eating, and have other adverse effects. The good news is that this problem can be fixed (a dental surgeon will temporarily cement his upper and lower teeth together, holding the upper jaw in place until it heals in the correct position). The bad news is that the surgery, x-rays, and placement of a feeding tube could cost as much as $1,500??hopefully not more! Everyone following Carmichael's progress and sharing his story on Facebook and Twitter has been amazingly generous, so I don't want to ask anyone who has donated to give more. However, if it is possible for everyone to keep sharing, perhaps it is possible to get a bit more funding from other donors. Carmichael is not only tame, but a very sweet, good-natured cat. He has had to deal with a number of people poking around his poor tender mouth, cleaning his nose, putting ointment in his eyes, etc.??and he always cooperates, even purring when gets his treatments. According to Dr. Cohn, he will be able to go to an experienced foster (or even a conscientious "non-pro") shortly after this procedure is done??so a foster (or better yet, adopter!) is greatly needed. Tomorrow I will make a short video with Dr. Cohn, showing the situation with his jaw and how they intend to fix it. Thank you for everything! DOnation link under the photo. Thank you! or here too Chipin
Thank you all, Debbie

Subject: Activist Alert: Say No to Big Coal

Friends,

The surge of coal trains coming from Montana and Wyoming  to Washington State ports, carrying some 150 million tons of coal a year, will create horrific local and global effects.  This pillaging of the public commons for the short term profit of multinational mining corporations is not going to be stopped without an enormous fight. This dirty coal is destined for  China and will come back to us as acid rain and climate chaos.  Please pass the word that we need immediate action against becoming a neo-colonial extraction economy.  Big Coal is trying to sell us out with a "thousands of jobs" enticement.  We'll be left with black lung, a poisoned environment and the costs of mitigation and cleanup.

Also, a Comet Ridge Resources, a Colorado company, will drill the first exploratory well in Montesano, Grays Harbor County this month, as a first step for possible fracking in our state's beautiful area of forested lakes.

Related news: Without much fanfare, the U.S. House passed HR 4402 to ease environmental rules and limit lawsuits on mining in the west.  They also passed HR 4402, refusing to require royalty payments of hard rock minerals extracted from public land.

Thank goodness for activists already working on this.  I urge you to alert your friends and to rally quickly. The links below are FYI.    Please call Governor Christine Gregoire at (360) 902-4111 and urge her to ensure that Washington says NO to coal export and YES to a clean energy future.

Thank you,

Linda Boyd

The Lily-Pad Strategy
How the Pentagon Is Quietly Transforming Its Overseas Base Empire and Creating a Dangerous New Way of War

By David Vine

The first thing I saw last month when I walked into the belly of the dark grey C-17 Air Force cargo plane was a void -- something missing. A missing left arm, to be exact, severed at the shoulder, temporarily patched and held together.  Thick, pale flesh, flecked with bright red at the edges. It looked like meat sliced open. The face and what remained of the rest of the man were obscured by blankets, an American flag quilt, and a jumble of tubes and tape, wires, drip bags, and medical monitors.

That man and two other critically wounded soldiers -- one with two stumps where legs had been, the other missing a leg below the thigh -- were intubated, unconscious, and lying on stretchers hooked to the walls of the plane that had just landed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. A tattoo on the soldiers remaining arm read, DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR.

I asked a member of the Air Force medical team about the casualties they see like these. Many, as with this flight, were coming from Afghanistan, he told me. A lot from the Horn of Africa, he added. You dont really hear about that in the media.

Where in Africa? I asked.  He said he didnt know exactly, but generally from the Horn, often with critical injuries. A lot out of Djibouti, he added, referring to Camp Lemonnier, the main U.S. military base in Africa, but from elsewhere in the region, too.

Since the Black Hawk Down deaths in Somalia almost 20 years ago, weve heard little, if anything, about American military casualties in Africa (other than a strange report last week about three special operations commandos killed, along with three women identified by U.S. military sources as Moroccan prostitutes, in a mysterious car accident in Mali). The growing number of patients arriving at Ramstein from Africa pulls back a curtain on a significant transformation in twenty-first-century U.S. military strategy.

These casualties are likely to be the vanguard of growing numbers of wounded troops coming from places far removed from Afghanistan or Iraq. They reflect the increased use of relatively small bases like Camp Lemonnier, which military planners see as a model for future U.S. bases scattered, as one academic explains, across regions in which the United States has previously not maintained a military presence.

Disappearing are the days when Ramstein was the signature U.S. base, an American-town-sized behemoth filled with thousands or tens of thousands of Americans, PXs, Pizza Huts, and other amenities of home. But dont for a second think that the Pentagon is packing up, downsizing its global mission, and heading home. In fact, based on developments in recent years, the opposite may be true. While the collection of Cold War-era giant bases around the world is shrinking, the global infrastructure of bases overseas has exploded in size and scope.

Unknown to most Americans, Washingtons garrisoning of the planet is on the rise, thanks to a new generation of bases the military calls lily pads (as in a frog jumping across a pond toward its prey). These are small, secretive, inaccessible facilities with limited numbers of troops, spartan amenities, and prepositioned weaponry and supplies.

Around the world, from Djibouti to the jungles of Honduras, the deserts of Mauritania to Australias tiny Cocos Islands, the Pentagon has been pursuing as many lily pads as it can, in as many countries as it can, as fast as it can. Although statistics are hard to assemble, given the often-secretive nature of such bases, the Pentagon has probably built upwards of 50 lily pads and other small bases since around 2000, while exploring the construction of dozens more.

As Mark Gillem, author of America Town: Building the Outposts of Empire, explains, avoidance of local populations, publicity, and potential opposition is the new aim. To project its power, he says, the United States wants secluded and self-contained outposts strategically located around the world. According to some of the strategys strongest proponents at the American Enterprise Institute, the goal should be to create a worldwide network of frontier forts, with the U.S. military the global cavalry of the twenty-first century.

Such lily-pad bases have become a critical part of an evolving Washington military strategy aimed at maintaining U.S. global dominance by doing far more with less in an increasingly competitive, ever more multi-polar world. Central as its becoming to the long-term U.S. stance, this global-basing reset policy has, remarkably enough, received almost no public attention, nor significant Congressional oversight. Meanwhile, as the arrival of the first casualties from Africa shows, the U.S. military is getting involved in new areas of the world and new conflicts, with potentially disastrous consequences.

Transforming the Base Empire

You might think that the U.S. military is in the process of shrinking, rather than expanding, its little noticed but enormous collection of bases abroad. After all, it was forced to close the full panoply of 505 bases, mega to micro, that it built in Iraq, and it's now beginning the process of drawing down forces in Afghanistan. In Europe, the Pentagon is continuing to close its massive bases in Germany and will soon remove two combat brigades from that country. Global troop numbers are set to shrink by around 100,000.

Yet Washington still easily maintains the largest collection of foreign bases in world history: more than 1,000 military installations outside the 50 states and Washington, DC. They include everything from decades-old bases in Germany and Japan to brand-new drone bases in Ethiopia and the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean and even resorts for military vacationers in Italy and South Korea.

In Afghanistan, the U.S.-led international force still occupies more than 450 bases. In total, the U.S. military has some form of troop presence in approximately 150 foreign countries, not to mention 11 aircraft carrier task forces -- essentially floating bases -- and a significant, and growing, military presence in space. The United States currently spends an estimated $250 billion annually maintaining bases and troops overseas.

Some bases, like Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, date to the late nineteenth century. Most were built or occupied during or just after World War II on every continent, including Antarctica. Although the U.S. military vacated around 60% of its foreign bases following the Soviet Unions collapse, the Cold War base infrastructure remained relatively intact, with 60,000 American troops remaining in Germany alone, despite the absence of a superpower adversary.

However, in the early months of 2001, even before the attacks of 9/11, the Bush administration launched a major global realignment of bases and troops thats continuing today with Obamas Asia pivot. Bushs original plan was to close more than one-third of the nations overseas bases and shift troops east and south, closer to predicted conflict zones in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Pentagon began to focus on creating smaller and more flexible forward operating bases and even smaller cooperative security locations or lily pads. Major troop concentrations were to be restricted to a reduced number of main operating bases (MOBs) -- like Ramstein, Guam in the Pacific, and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean -- which were to be expanded.

Despite the rhetoric of consolidation and closure that went with this plan, in the post-9/11 era the Pentagon has actually been expanding its base infrastructure dramatically, including dozens of major bases in every Persian Gulf country save Iran, and in several Central Asian countries critical to the war in Afghanistan.

Hitting the Base Reset Button

Obamas recently announced Asia pivot signals that East Asia will be at the center of the explosion of lily-pad bases and related developments. Already in Australia, U.S. marines are settling into a shared base in Darwin. Elsewhere, the Pentagon is pursuing plans for a drone and surveillance base in Australias Cocos Islands and deployments to Brisbane and Perth. In Thailand, the Pentagon has negotiated rights for new Navy port visits and a disaster-relief hub at U-Tapao.

In the Philippines, whose government evicted the U.S. from the massive Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base in the early 1990s, as many as 600 special forces troops have quietly been operating in the countrys south since January 2002. Last month, the two governments reached an agreement on the future U.S. use of Clark and Subic, as well as other repair and supply hubs from the Vietnam War era. In a sign of changing times, U.S. officials even signed a 2011 defense agreement with former enemy Vietnam and have begun negotiations over the Navys increased use of Vietnamese ports.

Elsewhere in Asia, the Pentagon has rebuilt a runway on tiny Tinian island near Guam, and its considering future bases in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, while pushing stronger military ties with India. Every year in the region, the military conducts around 170 military exercises and 250 port visits. On South Koreas Jeju island, the Korean military is building a base that will be part of the U.S. missile defense system and to which U.S. forces will have regular access.

We just cant be in one place to do what weve got to do, Pacific Command commander Admiral Samuel Locklear III has said. For military planners, what weve got to do is clearly defined as isolating and (in the terminology of the Cold War) containing the new power in the region, China. This evidently means peppering new bases throughout the region, adding to the more than 200 U.S. bases that have encircled China for decades in Japan, South Korea, Guam, and Hawaii.

And Asia is just the beginning. In Africa, the Pentagon has quietly created about a dozen air bases for drones and surveillance since 2007. In addition to Camp Lemonnier, we know that the military has created or will soon create installations in Burkina Faso, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritania, So Tom and Prncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, South Sudan, and Uganda. The Pentagon has also investigated building bases in Algeria, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria, among other places.

Next year, a brigade-sized force of 3,000 troops, and likely more, will arrive for exercises and training missions across the continent. In the nearby Persian Gulf, the Navy is developing an afloat forward-staging base, or mothership, to serve as a sea-borne lily pad for helicopters and patrol craft, and has been involved in a massive build-up of forces in the region.

In Latin America, following the military's eviction from Panama in 1999 and Ecuador in 2009, the Pentagon has created or upgraded new bases in Aruba and Curaao, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, and Peru.  Elsewhere, the Pentagon has funded the creation of military and police bases capable of hosting U.S. forces in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, and even Ecuador. In 2008, the Navy reactivated its Fourth Fleet, inactive since 1950, to patrol the region. The military may want a base in Brazil and unsuccessfully tried to create bases, ostensibly for humanitarian and emergency relief, in Paraguay and Argentina.

Finally, in Europe, after arriving in the Balkans during 1990s interventions, U.S. bases have moved eastward into some of the former Eastern Bloc states of the Soviet empire. The Pentagon is now developing installations capable of supporting rotating, brigade-sized deployments in Romania and Bulgaria, and a missile defense base and aviation facilities in Poland. Previously, the Bush administration maintained two CIA black sites (secret prisons) in Lithuania and another in Poland. Citizens of the Czech Republic rejected a planned radar base for the Pentagons still unproven missile defense system, and now Romania will host ground-based missiles.

A New American Way of War

A lily pad on one of the Gulf of Guinea islands of So Tom and Prncipe, off the oil-rich west coast of Africa, helps explain whats going on. A U.S. official has described the base as another Diego Garcia, referring to the Indian Ocean base thats helped ensure decades of U.S. domination over Middle Eastern energy supplies. Without the freedom to create new large bases in Africa, the Pentagon is using So Tom and a growing collection of other lily pads on the continent in an attempt to control another crucial oil-rich region.

Far beyond West Africa, the nineteenth century Great Game competition for Central Asia has returned with a passion -- and this time gone global.  Its spreading to resource-rich lands in Africa, Asia, and South America, as the United States, China, Russia, and members of the European Union find themselves locked in an increasingly intense competition for economic and geopolitical supremacy.

While Beijing, in particular, has pursued this competition in a largely economic fashion, dotting the globe with strategic investments, Washington has focused relentlessly on military might as its global trump card, dotting the planet with new bases and other forms of military power. Forget full-scale invasions and large-footprint occupations on the Eurasian mainland, Nick Turse has written of this new twenty-first century military strategy. Instead, think: special operations forces... proxy armies... the militarization of spying and intelligence... drone aircraft... cyber-attacks, and joint Pentagon operations with increasingly militarized civilian government agencies.

Add to this unparalleled long-range air and naval power; arms sales besting any nation on Earth; humanitarian and disaster relief missions that clearly serve military intelligence, patrol, and hearts and minds functions; the rotational deployment of regular U.S. forces globally; port visits and an expanding array of joint military exercises and training missions that give the U.S. military de facto presence worldwide and help turn foreign militaries into proxy forces.

And lots and lots of lily-pad bases.

Military planners see a future of endless small-scale interventions in which a large, geographically dispersed collection of bases will always be primed for instant operational access. With bases in as many places as possible, military planners want to be able to turn to another conveniently close country if the United States is ever prevented from using a base, as it was by Turkey prior to the invasion of Iraq. In other words, Pentagon officials dream of nearly limitless flexibility, the ability to react with remarkable rapidity to developments anywhere on Earth, and thus, something approaching total military control over the planet.

Beyond their military utility, the lily pads and other forms of power projection are also political and economic tools used to build and maintain alliances and provide privileged U.S. access to overseas markets, resources, and investment opportunities. Washington is planning to use lily-pad bases and other military projects to bind countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America as closely as possible to the U.S. military -- and so to continued U.S. political-economic hegemony. In short, American officials are hoping military might will entrench their influence and keep as many countries as possible within an American orbit at a time when some are asserting their independence ever more forcefully or gravitating toward China and other rising powers.

Those Dangerous Lily Pads

While relying on smaller bases may sound smarter and more cost effective than maintaining huge bases that have often caused anger in places like Okinawa and South Korea, lily pads threaten U.S. and global security in several ways:

First, the lily pad language can be misleading, since by design or otherwise, such installations are capable of quickly growing into bloated behemoths.

Second, despite the rhetoric about spreading democracy that still lingers in Washington, building more lily pads actually guarantees collaboration with an increasing number of despotic, corrupt, and murderous regimes.

Third, there is a well-documented pattern of damage that military facilities of various sizes inflict on local communities. Although lily pads seem to promise insulation from local opposition, over time even small bases have often led to anger and protest movements.

Finally, a proliferation of lily pads means the creeping militarization of large swaths of the globe. Like real lily pads -- which are actually aquatic weeds -- bases have a way of growing and reproducing uncontrollably. Indeed, bases tend to beget bases, creating base races with other nations, heightening military tensions, and discouraging diplomatic solutions to conflicts. After all, how would the United States respond if China, Russia, or Iran were to build even a single lily-pad base of its own in Mexico or the Caribbean?

For China and Russia in particular, ever more U.S. bases near their borders threaten to set off new cold wars. Most troublingly, the creation of new bases to protect against an alleged future Chinese military threat may prove to be a self-fulfilling prophecy: such bases in Asia are likely to create the threat they are supposedly designed to protect against, making a catastrophic war with China more, not less, likely.

Encouragingly, however, overseas bases have recently begun to generate critical scrutiny across the political spectrum from Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul to Democratic Senator Jon Tester and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. With everyone looking for ways to trim the deficit, closing overseas bases offers easy savings. Indeed, increasingly influential types are recognizing that the country simply cant afford more than 1,000 bases abroad.

Great Britain, like empires before it, had to close most of its remaining foreign bases in the midst of an economic crisis in the 1960s and 1970s. The United States is undoubtedly headed in that direction sooner or later. The only question is whether the country will give up its bases and downsize its global mission by choice, or if it will follow Britains path as a fading power forced to give up its bases from a position of weakness.

Of course, the consequences of not choosing another path extend beyond economics. If the proliferation of lily pads, special operations forces, and drone wars continues, the United States is likely to be drawn into new conflicts and new wars, generating unknown forms of blowback, and untold death and destruction. In that case, wed better prepare for a lot more incoming flights -- from the Horn of Africa to Honduras -- carrying not just amputees but caskets.

Auditors: $51 billion spent by US to 'rebuild' Iraq, much wasted --Precise amount lost to fraud and waste can never be known - report 14 Jul 2012 After years of following the paper trail of $51 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars provided to rebuild a broken Iraq, the U.S. government can say with certainty that too much was wasted. But it can't say how much. In what it called its final audit report, the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Funds on Friday spelled out a range of accounting weaknesses that put "billions of American taxpayer dollars at risk of waste and misappropriation" in the largest reconstruction project of its kind in U.S. history. [Now, where was the 'Tea Party' when George W. Sociopath was blowing through the surplus and adding trillions to the deficit, to turn over the US Treasury to mercenaries and corpora-terrorists?]

Iraq wants all US-stolen archeological treasures back 16 Jul 2012 Iraq says it wants back all the archeological treasures, stolen by US forces in 2003, but Washington has offered to return only half. Iraq rejected the offer made by the United States to bring back half of the Iraqi Jewish Archive, previously transferred from Baghdad to the United States during the US-led invasion of the country, insisting that Baghdad had to restore the whole archive, Iraqi newspaper al-Sabah reported on Sunday. "The archive includes centuries-old Torah scrolls and plenty of other documents in Hebrew, Arabic, and English."

Welcome to London! Royal Navy's largest warship sails down the Thames as armed forces put on show of strength for Olympics --The British military's largest warship, HMS Ocean, was carefully positioned into its Greenwich dock to prepare for Olympics security --Mayor of London welcomed the 3,500 extra troops brought in to secure Games, saying public will like that they are there --Mayor added the armed soldiers will add 'tone' to the event 13 Jul 2012 The largest warship in the British Navy's fleet and thousands of additional soldiers have arrived in London to ensure security is not breached during 2012 Olympics. Spectators watched on as helicopter carrier HMS Ocean was manoeuvred into its dock at Greenwich, east London, yesterday where it will serve as a mighty military defence and home to service personnel during the Games. Security of the global sporting event has been at the top of London Major Boris Johnson's agenda this week after contractor G4S admitted it needed additional soldiers to plug a 3,500 staffing shortfall.

Olympics security: MoD to set up forward operating base for troops --MoD intends to equip base in the same way it would a FOB in Afghanistan --Troops will start arriving next week 13 Jul 2012 The Ministry of Defence is to establish a forward operating base close to the Olympic Park in east London to house up to 3,500 soldiers who have been drafted in as emergency cover for the crisis-hit security contractor G4S. Defence officials have identified a preferred venue, believed to be a warehouse near Stratford, to accommodate the soldiers coming from Germany, as well as Royal Marines and members of the Parachute Regiment. The MoD is negotiating a short-term lease and change of licence over the weekend, and if approval is granted it will equip the base in the same way it would an FOB in Afghanistan, with temporary beds, kitchens, showers, and toilets. [The government is using G4S failures as a 'cover' to bring in the military for a big false flag.]

Minot AFB locked down when driver doesn't stop --Incident remains under investigation 15 Jul 2012 Officials at Minot Air Force Base are continuing to investigate why a driver failed to stop at the south gate of the base, causing a two-hour lockdown of the installation. Lt. Jose Davis tells The Minot Daily News that the incident happened just after 4 p.m. Thursday when traffic is heavy with people leaving at the end of the day. Security forces found and questioned the driver, who is an active-duty member with access to the base.

Gate incident causes lockdown at Minot AFB 14 Jul 2012 Officials at Minot Air Force Base are continuing to investigate a Thursday afternoon incident in which a driver failed to stop at the south gate of the base, resulting in a two-hour lockdown of the installation... Instead of using a barrier, Col. Max Mitchell, vice commander of the base's 5th Bomb Wing, issued a base-wide order called a "shelter in place," an order to have everyone stay where they are. Lt. Jose Davis, acting chief of base Public Affairs, said security forces located the individual who had driven through the gate and questioned that person. He said the individual is an active-duty member who has access to the base but the incident is still being investigated.

Tiny 2-Foot Missile Could Be 'Months' Away From Drone War 13 Jul 2012 The drone war could be shrinking faster than anyone expected. Raytheon's teeny, tiny drone missile might be ready to arm a small drone within months, the defense giant says. Since 2009, Raytheon has been experimenting with what it understatedly calls a Small Tactical Munition. It's a laser-guided missile less than two feet long and barely a 10th the weight of the Hellfire missiles that the iconic Predators and Reapers pack. And the wait for it may be almost over: "We're just tweaking the software and running some environmental tests," a business manager for Raytheon's missile division told AIN Online. That would open new worlds of possibility for the U.S. drone arsenal.

Italian court postpones ruling in CIA rendition case 14 Jul 2012 The CIA and U.S. military officials appealing their convictions before the Italian Supreme Court on charges of kidnapping a terrorist suspect in Milan must wait until September for a possible final verdict in the long-running case. The Supreme Court of Cassation in Rome on Saturday postponed until Sept. 19 its highly anticipated ruling, which will determine the fates of two Washingtonians, Sabrina De Sousa, a former CIA operative, and Col. Joseph L. Romano III, a retired Air Force commander. The case is considered significant because a foreign country - an ally - prosecuted and convicted U.S. officials for the practice of rendition, in which a terrorist suspect is flown against his will to another country for interrogation to be tortured.

Omar Khadr: Delayed transfer from Guantanamo to Canada goes to court 13 Jul 2012 Omar Khadr's lawyers tried diplomacy, then a media campaign, but with still no word from Ottawa as to when the Toronto-born prisoner will be transferred to Canada to serve the remainder of his sentence, they're taking the fight to the courts. An application for judicial review of Public Safety Minister Vic Toews's delay in deciding Khadr's transfer was filed with the federal court late Friday. "We are profoundly disappointed that the Minister's inaction has made it necessary to take this step," Toronto lawyer Brydie Bethell said.

Fed. panel supports Kansas National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility [so US bioterrorists can create new pandemics] 13 Jul 2012 A government-backed committee of the National Research Council issued a report Friday saying the United States would have adequate biosecurity protections even if plans for a proposed $1.14 billion lab in Kansas are scaled back. The study was prepared by a subcommittee formed this spring to look at three options for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility that is to be built in Manhattan near the Kansas State University campus. DHS asked the National Research Council to review the threats of foreign animal disease, the capabilities needed to address such threats and analyze options for building the lab as proposed or scaling back the size and scope.

LAPD officers, Occupy L.A. protesters clash during ArtWalk downtown 13 Jul 2012 A confrontation in downtown Los Angeles late Thursday between police and Occupy L.A.protesters appeared to have stemmed from a sidewalk chalk-drawing demonstration, witnesses said. At least two officers were injured and several arrests had been made. Some of the messages written at the intersection of Spring and 5th streets included, "May the youth rise" and "End the Fed." Police used batons and non-lethal [?] projectiles to disperse the crowd, which in turn threw bottles and cans at officers and chanted, "Whose streets? Our streets!"

In purge of ineligible voters, Florida gains access to U.S. database 15 Jul 2012 A yearlong stalemate between Florida and Washington ended Saturday when the federal government gave the state access to a federal citizenship database, which the state will use to resume an election-year purge of noncitizen voters. After repeatedly refusing, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security agreed to open its database to the Department of State, which oversees Florida's voter registration system. The state will now cross-check the names of Florida voters against a federal citizenship database known as SAVE, or Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements.

NAACP Official: Romney 'Flew In' His Own Blacks to Cheer NAACP Speech 12 Jul 2012 An official with the NAACP suggested that Republican challenger Mitt Romney brought his own black supporters to the NAACP speech yesterday to give the appearance that NAACP members were applauding him. And when Romney later told Fox News that black people at the event gave him a standing ovation and said in a private meeting they would vote for him because of dissatisfaction with Obama, they were actually his own people, the official suggested. The revelation was made on MSNBC's "Ed Show" by Hilary Shelton, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy and the Director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, who said Romney flew in black conservatives to stand up at the end of his speech, allowing Romney to claim he got a standing ovation.

Obama campaign worker, 29, dies at Chicago headquarters 13 Jul 2012 A 29-year-old campaign operative working on President Obama's re-election effort died today after falling ill at campaign headquarters in Chicago, according to the Obama campaign. Obama was campaigning in southern Virginia this afternoon, when he learned about Okrent's death.

Was the petrol price rigged too? 15 Jul 2012 Motorists may have been paying too much for their petrol because banks and other traders are likely to have tried to manipulate oil prices in the same way they rigged interest rates, an official report has warned. Concerns are growing about the reliability of oil prices, after a report for the G20 found the market is wide open to "manipulation or distortion". Traders from banks, oil companies or hedge funds have an "incentive" to distort the market and are likely to try to report false prices, it said. Politicians and fuel campaigners last night urged the Government to expand its inquiry into the Libor scandal to see whether oil prices have also been falsely pushed up.

New York Fed Was Aware of False Reporting on Rates 13 Jul 2012 The Federal Reserve Bank of New York learned in April 2008, as the financial crisis was brewing, that at least one bank was reporting false interest rates. At the time, a Barclays employee told a New York Fed official that "we know that we're not posting um, an honest" rate, according to documents released by the regulator on Friday. The employee indicated that other big banks made similarly bogus reports, saying that the British institution wanted to "fit in with the rest of the crowd." Although the New York Fed conferred with Britain and American regulators about the problems and recommended reforms, it failed to stop the illegal activity, which persisted through 2009.

Mystery of 500 penguins washed up on beach in Brazil 15 Jul 2012 The bodies of more than 500 penguins have washed up on beaches in southern Brazil over the past week. Marine biologists are investigating what caused the deaths of the 512 penguins found on beaches of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. The cause of death should be known in about 30 days. The penguins were migrating north from Argentina in search of food in warmer waters. Thirty samples from the penguins were being analysed at Porto Alegre University.

Greens sue to block Shell drilling in Arctic Alaska 12 Jul 2012 Leading national conservation groups are going to federal court in a last-ditch effort to block Shell from drilling exploratory wells in the Arctic waters of Alaska's Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The U.S. Department of Interior has approved Shell's drilling plans [Thanks, Obusha!], which include response to a drill-caused oil spill. One drilling rig, the Noble Discoverer, has reached Unalaska in the Aleutians and the oil giant expects to start drilling in early August. "We have been forced to court to make sure the Arctic Ocean is protected and Shell is prepared, as mandated by law:  The (Interior Dept.) rubber-stamped plans that rely on unbelievable assumptions, include equipment that has never been tested in Arctic conditions...," said a statement from 10 green groups, including the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council.

Amy,

Bill McKibben of 350.org, Josh Fox of Gasland, and Mike Tidwell of CCAN are just some of the names of the incredibly powerful speakers who will be joining us on July 28th at Stop the Frack Attack. We will also hear from Dayne Pratzky, who is fighting fracking in Australia, Lori New Breast of Blackfeet Women Against Fracking, cancer survivor Laura Amos, Kari Matsko, who helped start the battle against fracking in Ohio, and many more!

You can see the full list of speakers here!

Something you might notice about our speakers is that they are mostly local people fighting unsafe fracking. From the beginning, Stop the Frack Attack has been led by our advisory committee, 11 individuals who have been putting in countless hours to make sure this event reflects the movement on the ground. They chose the speakers because, to them, they are the ones who best represent this movement.

We also want to draw your attention to our newest video from Mark Ruffalo and Josh Fox inviting you to Stop the Frack Attack! You might also notice that he hints at our next steps, making sure New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo makes the right decisions about fracking in his state!

In struggle,

Robby Diesu and the Stop the Frack Team

P.S. Don't forget to check out the detailed website info on the Lobby Day and the National Gathering, the lead up days to the Day of Action.

Dear Amy,

“Don’t let the
belugas go silent.
Help protect them
before time runs out.”
-- Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan

The Apache Alaska Corporation is launching an airgun attack that threatens the survival of the last 284 belugas of Cook Inlet. Watch this one-minute video, narrated by Pierce Brosnan -- and then tell the Obama Administration to stop the assault!

View Video and Take Action

I urge you to watch this powerful one-minute video, narrated by Pierce Brosnan, about the desperate plight of the last 284 belugas of Alaska’s Cook Inlet.

Then tell the Obama Administration to stop the Apache Alaska Corporation from launching a deafening airgun attack that could help push these white whales over the brink of extinction.

The explosive noise of airguns used to explore for oil and gas can deafen, injure and even kill whales.

Yet Apache is preparing to launch an acoustic onslaught in the belugas’ only home in the world. Even worse: the Obama Administration has just given Apache the green light to proceed.

These sonic blasts will repeat every 10 to 12 seconds -- and could last 3 to 5 years! The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) predicts that the airguns will harm at least 30 belugas during the first year of Apache’s operations alone. After three years, those harmed would equal one third of all the Cook Inlet belugas left on Earth.

It’s outrageous that the Obama Administration would allow Apache to proceed with this potentially lethal operation in the midst of whale habitat the government is supposed to be protecting.

It was only four years ago that you and I prevailed on the Obama Administration to put these belugas on the endangered species list and then designate 3,000 square miles of Cook Inlet as “critical habitat.”

We have fought too long and too hard to let the last Cook Inlet belugas be sacrificed now to oil company profits.

Please watch Pierce’s video now and send your own message to the Obama Administration right away.

And thank you for defending the last 284 belugas of Cook Inlet.

Sincerely,
Frances

Hey--is anyone concerned about the Spectra or Rockaway pipelines? Show up and ask some relevant questions. Such as, how can one be against fracking and not be against pipelines?  OR If Radon will be in the delivered gas to our homes who is measuring it?  Shouldn't there be an evaluation before pipelines and facilities to use the gas are installed?

CITY COUNCIL LAND USE COMMITTEE VOTES 19-1
TO APPROVE NYU EXPANSION PLAN
WITH SMALL REDUCTIONS;

PLAN GOES TO FULL COUNCIL ON JULY 25th

Dear Friend,

Footer Today the City Council's Land Use Committee voted 19 to 1 to approve an amended version of NYU's massive Village expansion plan with minor modifications. The plan now goes to the full City Council for a vote on July 25th. The plan had the full support of Speaker Quinn and Councilmember Chin, in whose district it is located, which many Councilmembers cited when casting their vote in favor. In a press release issued by Speaker Quinn's office and Councilmember Chin, they referred to the plan as one which "upholds the integrity of Greenwich Village" (read the release HERE).

Earlier this morning, GVSHP stood on the steps of City Hall with leaders of NYU faculty, NYU staff, NYU graduate workers, and a host of local community organizations calling upon the City Council to vote 'NO,' send this plan back to the drawing board, and consider alternatives rather than eliminating public open space, violating agreements under which NYU was given public land years ago, and vastly increasing the oversaturation of the Village with NYU facilities as this plan does. We were joined in the Council by Financial District community leaders who have spoken out against the NYU plan and urged the university to instead work with that community to find suitable locations for some of their facilities in the Financial District. With the Council's vote, this feedback, and that of thousands of New Yorkers who urged the Council to reject the plan, was ignored.

If you would like to urge the rest of the Council to vote against the plan approved today, click HERE.

Make no mistake, however -- the fight is not over. The full Council must still vote on the plan; and while the Council almost always follows the vote of the Land Use Committee, GVSHP and NYU faculty will be reviewing all options available to us should the Council approve the plan.

If you would like to support GVSHP's continuing efforts to fight the NYU plan, and our other preservation and education efforts, click HERE.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our efforts, and we will have more news soon.

Persian Gulf Shooting - US vessel fires on boat off UAE coast, killing 1 16 Jul 2012 A US vessel has opened fire on a boat off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf, killing at least one person and injuring three others. The victims are reported to be Indian fishermen. It was not immediately clear why the USNS Rappahannock attacked a small motor boat near the Dubai port of Jebel Ali on Monday. One dead, three hurt after US fires on UAE fishing boat 16 Jul 2012 A U.S. Navy vessel fired on an approaching fishing boat off the United Arab Emirates on Monday, killing an Indian national and seriously injuring three others, the UAE's state news agency (WAM) said. "The firing has led to the death of one Indian national and serious injury of three Indian nationals," Tarek al-Hedan, an aide to the foreign minister for political affairs, told WAM. He said that authorities in the UAE are investigating the matter.

12 NATO oil tankers torched in eastern Afghanistan 16 Jul 2012 Taliban militants have attacked 12 NATO tankers carrying fuel for US-led forces in eastern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Afghan officials said that one driver was killed and four security guards were injured late on Sunday when the militants set the tankers on fire in Sayed-Abad district, Wardak province. Afghan officials have blamed Taliban for the attack. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed that the militants have destroyed 25 NATO tankers and killed several drivers as well as security guards.

Egyptians pelt Clinton motorcade with tomatoes 15 Jul 2012 Protesters threw tomatoes and shoes at Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's motorcade on Sunday during her first visit to Egypt since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. A tomato struck an Egyptian official in the face, and shoes and a water bottle landed near the armored cars carrying Clinton's delegation in the port city of Alexandria after she gave a speech on democratic rights. A senior U.S. official said neither Clinton nor her vehicle, which was around the corner from the incident, were hit by the projectiles, which were thrown as U.S. officials and reporters walked to the motorcade after her speech. [WHY is Mursi's religious affiliation noted before his title of 'President' - but no religious affiliation is added before Clinton's title?]

South Wales Police drafted in to help with Olympics security crisis 16 Jul 2012 South Wales Police officers have been drafted to London to help with the Olympics security crisis. Hundreds of officers from nine police forces, including South Wales, are being drafted in to fill the gaps in Olympics security left by under-fire firm G4S, alongside the extra 3,500 military personnel called in to help with venue security. Hundreds of officers are now being deployed, in addition to the 3,500 servicemen and women who were called in last week.

More than 100,000 protest nuclear power in Tokyo 16 Jul 2012 More than 100,000 anti-nuclear protesters marched through central Tokyo on Monday to voice their opposition to atomic power, ratcheting up the pressure on under fire Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. Protest organizers said 170,000 people turned out, closing one of Tokyo's main streets. Police estimated their number at up to 75,000, local media reported. Japanese people have grown wary of nuclear power since Fukushima, with surveys showing that about 70 percent want to abandon atomic energy even if not immediately.

Goldman Employees Join Bain as Top Donors to Romney Group 16 Jul 2012 Employees of Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., the biggest source of donations directly to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, are also the top givers to the joint fundraising committee he has set up with the Republican Party. Goldman employees contributed $902,310 to Romney Victory, according to a computer-assisted analysis of Federal Election Commission reports. Overall, Romney Victory has raised more than $140 million since being established on April 5. Employees of Boston-based Bain Capital LLC, the private-equity firm co- founded by Romney, were its second biggest contributors, giving $820,400.

The Global Economic Crisis
The Great Depression of the XXI Century

Michel Chossudovsky and Andrew Gavin Marshall (Editors)

This important collection provides the reader with "a most comprehensive analysis of the various facets – especially the financial, social and military ramifications – from an outstanding list of world-class social thinkers.”

The complex causes as well as the devastating consequences of the economic crisis are carefully scrutinized with contributions from Ellen Brown, Tom Burghardt, Michel Chossudovsky, Richard C. Cook, Shamus Cooke, John Bellamy Foster, Michael Hudson, Tanya Cariina Hsu, Fred Magdoff, Andrew Gavin Marshall, James Petras, Peter Phillips, Peter Dale Scott, Bill Van Auken, Claudia von Werlhof and Mike Whitney.

Despite the diversity of viewpoints and perspectives presented within this volume, all of the contributors ultimately come to the same conclusion: humanity is at the crossroads of the most serious economic and social crisis in modern history.

This book takes the reader through the corridors of the Federal Reserve, into the plush corporate boardrooms on Wall Street where far-reaching financial transactions are routinely undertaken.

HIGHLIGHTS

We bring to the attention of our readers some of the highlights of this important collection with selected excerpts from the various chapters.

PREFACE

In all major regions of the world, the economic recession is deep-seated, resulting in mass unemployment, the collapse of state social programs and the impoverishment of millions of people. The economic crisis is accompanied by a worldwide process of militarization, a "war without borders" led by the United States of America and its NATO allies. The conduct of the Pentagon’s "long war" is intimately related to the restructuring of the global economy.

The meltdown of financial markets in 2008-2009 was the result of institutionalized fraud and financial manipulation. The "bank bailouts" were implemented on the instructions of Wall Street, leading to the largest transfer of money wealth in recorded history, while simultaneously creating an insurmountable public debt.

With the worldwide deterioration of living standards and plummeting consumer spending, the entire structure of international commodity trade is potentially in jeopardy. The payments system of money transactions is in disarray. Following the collapse of employment, the payment of wages is disrupted, which in turn triggers a downfall in expenditures on necessary consumer goods and services. This dramatic plunge in purchasing power backfires on the productive system, resulting in a string of layoffs, plant closures and bankruptcies. Exacerbated by the freeze on credit, the decline in consumer demand contributes to the demobilization of human and material resources.
-Michel Chossudovsky and Andrew Gavin Marshall

PART I THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS

We are at the crossroads of the most serious economic crisis in world history. The economic crisis has by no means reached its climax, as some economists have predicted. The crisis is deepening, with the risk of seriously disrupting the structures of international trade and investment.

What is distinct in this particular phase of the crisis is the ability of the financial giants –through stock market manipulation as well as through their overriding control over credit – not only to create havoc in the production of goods and services, but also to undermine and destroy large and well established business corporations.

This crisis is far more serious than the Great Depression. All major sectors of the global economy are affected. Factories are closed down. Assembly lines are at a standstill. Unemployment is rampant. Wages have collapsed. Entire populations are precipitated into abysmal poverty. Livelihoods are destroyed. Public services are disrupted or privatized. The repercussions on people’s lives in North America and around the world are dramatic.
-
Michel Chossudovsky, Chapter I.

   ♦

America is dying. It is self-destructing and bringing the rest of the world down with it.

It all began in the early part of the 20th century. In 1907, J.P. Morgan, a private New York banker, published a rumor that a competing unnamed large bank was about to fail. It was a false charge but customers nonetheless raced to their banks to withdraw their money, in case it was their bank. As they pulled out their funds, the banks lost their cash deposits and were forced to call in their loans. People therefore had to pay back their mortgages to fill the banks with income, going bankrupt in the process. The 1907 panic resulted in a crash that prompted the creation of the Federal Reserve, a private banking cartel with the veneer of an independent government organization. Effectively, it was a coup by elite bankers in order to control the industry.
-Tanya Cariina Hsu, Chapter II

   ♦

Much attention has rightly been paid to the techniques whereby mortgages were packaged together and then sliced and diced and sold to institutional investors around the world. Outright fraud may also have been involved in some of the financial shenanigans. The falling home values following the bursting of the housing bubble and the inability of many sub-prime mortgage holders to continue to make their monthly payments, together with the resulting foreclosures, was certainly the straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to this catastrophic system failure.
-John Bellamy Foster and Fred Magdoff, Chapter III

   ♦

A world depression, in which upward of a quarter of the world’s labor force will be unemployed, is looming. The biggest decline in trade in recent world history defines the future. The immanent bankruptcies of the biggest manufacturing companies in the capitalist world haunt Western political leaders. The “market” as a mechanism for allocating resources and the government of the U.S. as the “leader” of the global economy have been discredited.

All the assumptions about “self-stabilizing markets” are demonstrably false and outmoded. The rejection of public intervention in the market and the advocacy of supply-side economics have been discredited even in the eyes of their practitioners.

Among almost all conventional economists, pundits, investment advisors and various and sundry experts and economic historians, there is a common faith that in the long-run, the stock market will recover, the recession will end and the government will withdraw from the economy. Fixed on notions of past cyclical patterns and historical trends, these analysts lose sight of the present realities which have no precedent: the world nature of the economic depression, the unprecedented speed of the fall, and the levels of debt incurred by governments to sustain insolvent banks and industries and the unprecedented public deficits, which will drain resources for many generations to come.
-James Petras, Chapter 4.

   ♦

Is there an alternative to plundering the earth? Is there an alternative to making war? Is there an alternative to destroying the planet? No one asks these questions because they seem absurd. Yet, no one can escape them either.

Until the onslaught of the global economic crisis, the motto of so-called “neoliberalism” was TINA: “There Is No Alternative!”No alternative to “neoliberal globalization”?  No alternative to the unfettered “free market” economy?

The notion that capitalism and democracy are one is proven a myth by neoliberalism and its “monetary totalitarianism”. The primacy of politics over economy has been lost. Politicians of all parties have abandoned it. It is the corporations that dictate politics. Where corporate interests are concerned, there is no place for democratic convention or community control. Public space disappears. The res publica turns into a res privata, or – as we could say today – a res privata transnationale (in its original Latin meaning, privare means “to deprive”). Only those in power still have rights. They give themselves the licenses they need, from the “license to plunder” to the “license to kill”.
-Claudia Von Werlhof, Chapter 5.

   ♦

The mainstream media is now – for political reasons – in a constant clamor for the economy’s elusive “rock bottom”. This is so people will be more hopeful, less agitated, and more willing to let those who destroyed the economy continue running the country un-challenged. Every time a new economic indicator comes out that wasn’t “as bad as expected”, Wall Street cheers and politicians give their “we’ve turned the corner” speeches. Reality is thus turned on its head.

The recession is creating a “fight or die” environment for corporations and governments around the world. The super rich that currently control both entities are using their influence to ensure that workers carry the brunt of this burden. It doesn’t have to be so. The fight for jobs, a living wage, progressive taxation, social security and single payer healthcare are all issues capable of uniting the vast majority of U.S. citizens.
-Shamus Cooke Chapter 6

PART II  GLOBAL POVERTY

The sugar-coated bullets of the “free market” are killing our children. The act to kill is instrumented in a detached fashion through computer program trading on the New York and Chicago mercantile exchanges, where the global prices of rice, wheat and corn are decided upon. People in different countries are being impoverished simultaneously as a result of a global market mechanism. A small number of financial institutions and global corporations have the ability to determine the prices of basic food  staples quoted on the commodity exchanges, thereby directly affecting the standard of living of millions of people around the world.

The provision of food, fuel and water is a precondition for the survival of the human species. They constitute the economic and environmental foundations for development of civilized society. In recent years, both prior and leading up to the 2008-2009 financial meltdown, the prices of grain staples, including rice, corn and wheat, gasoline and water, has increased dramatically at the global level with devastating economic and social consequences.
-Michel Chossudovsky, Chapter 7

   ♦

Globalization is accompanied by the increasing impacts of world hunger and starvation. Over 30 000 people a day (85 percent are children under the age of five) die of malnutrition, curable diseases and starvation. The numbers of unnecessary deaths has exceeded 300 million people over the past forty years.

American people cringe at the thought of starving children, often thinking that there is little they can do about it, proclaiming, I am glad I live in America. However, in a globalized economy there are no safe enclaves, poverty and starvation elsewhere can become poverty and wretchedness here as well.
-Peter Phillips, Chapter 8

PART III  WAR, NATIONAL SECURITY AND WORLD GOVERNMENT

Economic conquest is an integral part of America’s military adventure. The U.S. military and intelligence apparatus consults with Wall Street and the Texas oil giants. Conversely, the IMF and the World Bank, which have a mandate to supervise macroeconomic reform in developing countries, are in liaison with the U.S. State Department and the Pentagon.

Economic warfare supports Washington’s military roadmap. The manipulation of market forces through the imposition of strong “economic medicine” under the helm of the IMF supports U.S.-NATO strategic and geopolitical objectives. Similarly, the speculative attacks waged by powerful banking conglomerates in the currency, commodity and stock markets are acts of financial warfare. They seek to destabilize the monetary systems of nation states.

Historically, warfare has been an instrument of economic conquest. U.S. foreign policy and the Pentagon’s war plans are intimately related to the process of economic globalization.
-Michel Chossudovsky Chapter 9

   ♦

Strange as it may seem and irrational as it would be in a more logical system of world diplomacy, the “dollar glut” is what finances America’s global military build-up. It forces foreign central banks to bear the costs of America’s expanding military empire: effective “taxation without representation”.

The military overhead is much like a debt overhead, extracting revenue from the economy. In this case it is to pay the military-industrial complex, not merely Wall Street banks and other financial institutions. The domestic federal budget deficit does not stem only from "priming the pump" to give away enormous sums to create a new financial oligarchy; it contains an enormous and rapidly growing military component.

The domestic federal budget deficit does not stem only from “priming the pump” to give away enormous sums to create a new financial oligarchy; it contains an enormous and rapidly growing military component.
-Michael Hudson, Chapter 10

   ♦

The bailout measures of late 2008 may have consequences at least as grave for an open society as the response to 9/11 in 2001. Many members of Congress felt coerced at the time into voting against their inclinations, and the normal procedures for orderly consideration of a bill were dispensed with.

America escaped from the depression of the 1890s with the Spanish-American War.  It only escaped the Great Depression of the 1930s with the Second World War. There was even a recession in the late 1940s from which America only escaped with the Korean War. As we face the risk of major depression again, I believe we inevitably face the danger of major war again.
-Peter Dale Scott, Chapter 11

   ♦

As the global economic crisis deepens, ongoing efforts by the defense and security establishment to shore-up the empire's crumbling edifice consumes an ever-greater proportion of America's national budget

The "black" or secret portions of the budget are almost as large as the entire expenditure of defense funds by America's allies, hardly slouches when it comes to feeding their own militarist beasts.
-Tom Burghardt, Chapter 12

   ♦

In testimony before the Senate Committee on Intelligence, Obama’s new Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, warned that the deepening world capitalist crisis posed the paramount threat to U.S. national security and warned that its continuation could trigger a return to the "violent extremism" of the 1920s and 1930s. Clearly underlying his remarks are fears within the massive U.S. intelligence apparatus as well as among more conscious layers of the American ruling elite that a protracted economic crisis accompanied by rising unemployment and reduced social spending will trigger a global eruption of the class struggle and the threat of social revolution.
-Bill Van Auken, Chapter 13

   ♦

The world is moving towards establishing, within decades, a global government structure. Moving the utopian rhetoric of such an undertaking aside, we must analyze how such a structure is being built. Given the global economic crisis, the governments of the world are restructuring their economies, and the global economy as a whole, into a corporatist structure. Thus, this new international economic system being constructed is one representative of economic fascism.

The governments now work directly for the banks, democracy is in decline everywhere, and the militarization of domestic society into creating “Homeland Security states” is underway and accelerating.
-Andrew Gavin Marshall, Chapter 14

PART IV  THE GLOBAL MONETARY SYSTEM

Any notion of a “free market” must be dispelled in its true meaning, for as long as the central banking system has been dominant, central bankers have managed and controlled capitalism for the benefit of the few and at the expense of the many. Comprehending the nature of central banking is necessary in order to understand the nature of the current economic crisis.

The central banking system has been the most powerful network of institutions in the world; it reigns supreme over the capitalist world order, almost since its inception. Central banks are the perfect merger of private interests and public power. They have played key roles in every major development and drastic change in the capitalist world economy, and continue to do so.

Central bank policies caused the Great Depression and played an enormous role in creating the Global Economic Crisis of 2008 onwards. As the “solutions” to the economic crisis are being implemented, it would appear that those that created the crisis are being rewarded. The central banking system is becoming more globalized, more centralized, and more powerful.
-Andrew Gavin Marshall, Chapter 15

   ♦

Wary observers might say that this is how you pull off a private global dictatorship: (1) create a global crisis; (2) appoint an “advisory body” to retain and maintain “stability”; then (3) “formalize” the advisory body as global regulator. By the time the people wake up to what has happened, it’s too late.

If we the people of the world are to avoid abdicating the sovereignty of our respective nations to a private foreign banking elite, we need to insist on compliance with the constitutional and legal mandates on which our nations were founded.
-Ellen Brown, Chapter 16

   ♦

The very concept of a global currency and global central bank is authoritarian in its very nature, as it removes any vestiges of oversight and accountability away from the people of the world, toward a small, increasingly interconnected group of international elites. Indeed, the policy “solutions” tend to benefit those who caused the financial crisis over those who are poised to suffer the most as a result of the crisis: the disappearing middle classes, the world’s dispossessed, poor, indebted people.

It is imperative that the world’s people throw their weight against these “solutions” and usher in a new era of world order, one of the People’s World Order; with the solution lying in local governance and local economies, so that the people have greater roles in determining the future and structure of their own political-economy, and thus, their own society. With this alternative of localized political economies, in conjunction with an unprecedented global population and international democratization of communication through the internet, we have the means and possibility before us to forge the most diverse manifestation of cultures and societies that humanity has ever known.
-Andrew Gavin Marshall, Chapter 17

   ♦

Real economic democracy, defined as the unfettered opportunity for every person to achieve his productive potential and be fairly rewarded for doing so, does not exist on the earth today. The economic life of the world today is based on predatory capitalism, where the people with the most money are the ones in charge.

Instrumental in control of economics by the rich has been the debt-based monetary system, where credit is treated as the monopoly of private financial interests who in turn control governments, intelligence services and military establishments. Politicians are bought and sold, elected or removed, or even assassinated for this purpose. The global monetary system is tightly controlled and coordinated at the top by the leaders of the central banks who work for the world’s richest people.

The worldwide monetary reform movement has come into existence to secure the benefits of control of the monetary supply by the community rather than monopolistic cliques exemplified by the Western banking system. While this is only one means of attaining economic democracy, it may be the most important one, because money as an instrument of law controls all commodities.
-Richard C. Cook, Chapter 18

PART V THE SHADOW BANKING SYSTEM

When the smartest guys in the room designed their credit default swaps, they forgot to ask one thing – what if the parties on the other side of the bet don’t have the money to pay up?

If there are no rules, the players can cheat; and cheat they have, with a gambler’s addiction.

The Ponzi scheme that has been going bad is not just another misguided investment strategy. It is at the very heart of the banking business, the thing that has propped it up over the course of three centuries.

A Ponzi scheme is a form of pyramid scheme in which new investors must continually be sucked in at the bottom to support the investors at the top.
-Ellen Brown, Chapter 19

   ♦

Is it possible to make hundreds of billions of dollars in profits on securities that are backed by nothing more than cyber-entries into a loan book? It is not only possible; it has been done. And now those who cashed in on the swindle have lined up outside the Federal Reserve building to trade their garbage paper for billions of dollars of taxpayer-funded loans.

Where is the justice? Meanwhile, the credit bust has left the financial system in a shambles and driven the economy into the ground like a tent stake.

The unemployment lines are growing longer and consumers are cutting back on everything from nights-on-the-town to trips to the grocery store. And it's all due to a Ponzi-finance scam that was concocted on Wall Street and spread through the global system like an aggressive strain of Bird Flu. This is not a normal recession; the financial system was blown up by greedy bankers who used "financial innovation" game the system and inflate the biggest speculative bubble of all time. And they did it all legally, using a little-known process called securitization.
-Mike Whitney, Chapter 20

Court demands secret files on US 'black jails,' torture 17 Jul 2012 The United States is facing fresh embarrassment over its use of 'black' detention sites after the European Court of Human Rights ordered Poland to hand over secret documents about its role in the War on Terror, The Daily Telegraph has learned. Judges in Strasbourg have requested documents that contain details of how the CIA set up its "extraordinary rendition" centre outside Warsaw in 2002 where it subjected al-Qaeda suspects to water-boarding and other extreme interrogation techniques. A month ago, a Polish whistle-blower alleged that a document existed which allowed the setting up of the prison including procedures to adopt in the event of an inmate's death. It was said to have been signed by the head of Polish intelligence. According to the leak, American officials "laughed" and refused to sign the document. "They considered us amateurs and explained that this kind of business could not be dealt with by means of formal agreements," the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported.

Chains you can believe in: Lawyers for Bagram detainees seek habeas like at Guantnamo --About 3,200 prisoners reportedly are being held at Bagram 16 Jul 2012 Prisoners held without trial for years at an American air base in Afghanistan shouldn't be able to challenge their indefinite detention with the help of the U.S. Constitution, Obama administration attorneys argued Monday. Reinforcing a hard-line view that's prevailed in past court battles, the administration said again that the foreign-born detainees at Bagram Air Field lacked the habeas corpus rights that the U.S. Supreme Court has extended to those held at the American naval base at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba.

NATO helicopter crashes in Afghanistan; 2 coalition troops injured 17 Jul 2012 A NATO helicopter crashed Wednesday in western Afghanistan, injuring two troops serving with the U.S.-led military coalition, NATO said. No other information was disclosed about the crash in the west. The crash is under investigation. Separately, NATO reported that a service member was killed Tuesday during an insurgent attack in the south.

US-led soldier killed in southern Afghanistan 18 Jul 2012 One US-led soldier has been killed in a militant attack in southern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. However, no additional details about the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, have been provided by either the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) or US officials.

US ship fired without warning, surviving Indian fishermen say 17 Jul 2012 The Indian fishermen who survived a deadly attack by a US Navy ship in the Persian Gulf say they received no warnings before a .50-caliber gun opened fire on their boat. The incident occurred on Monday off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. "We had no warning at all from the ship, we were speeding up to try and go around them and then suddenly we got fired at," 28-year-old Muthu Muniraj told Reuters from a hospital in Dubai on Tuesday.

US setting up new radar station in Qatar [Oh. I thought there was a deficit?] 18 Jul 2012 The United States is constructing a missile defense radar station at a covert location in Qatar as part of the expansion of its military presence in the tiny Persian Gulf state. The Pentagon decided to set up the new radar station in Qatar since the country already hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US air base in the region. It is estimated that the construction of a pad for the radar, roads, barracks, and security measures at the site of the planned radar will cost $12.2 million.

Obama prejudiced WikiLeaks accused: lawyer 18 Jul 2012 Comments by President Barack Obama about the soldier accused of the biggest intelligence leak in US history were prejudicial and sought to harm the suspect's defence, a court has heard. Other top figures, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and retired admiral Mike Mullen, the former head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, also made ill-advised remarks about Private Bradley Manning, it was alleged in court on Tuesday by civilian lawyer David Coombs. Obama's comment that Manning "broke the law", made at a political fundraiser in California last April, and other public statements were deliberately designed to inflict damage on the defence, Coombs said at Manning's pre-trial hearing at the Fort Meade military base in Maryland.

US Security Agents 'At Heathrow For Olympics' --Foreign officials have been drafted to bolster security at UK airports in the run-up to the Olympics. 17 Jul 2012 US security agents are to be based at Heathrow and some other UK airports for the duration of the Olympic Games, according to Sky sources. The Department for Transport has reached an agreement with the US Transportation Security Administration for specialist agents to be work at several UK airports. This is an added security layer that has been done to help boost and aid the American airlines in particular that fly in and out of the likes of Heathrow and other airports.

British soldiers swap Afghanistan for Olympic duty 17 Jul 2012 More acclimated to patrolling the battlefields of Afghanistan than checking Olympic accreditations, smiling British troops fanned out across London's Olympic Park on Tuesday to fill the void left by a private contractor's failure to provide enough guards. Unarmed but in combat uniforms, soldiers with suntans acquired far from cloudy London were getting accustomed to their temporary theater of action, a former industrial wasteland transformed into Olympic venues and accommodation. With "London 2012" badges starting to join regimental insignia on uniforms, soldiers swapped machine guns for barcode zappers as they manned airport-style checkpoints to the park. Several said they had recently served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

2nd bogus bomb threat closes US-Canada crossing 17 Jul 2012 A bogus bomb threat forced the closure of the Ambassador Bridge for several hours, the second such threat to a major crossing connecting Detroit to Canada in recent days. Detroit police said a 911 call came in around 7:20 p.m. Monday to authorities on the U.S. side of the Ambassador Bridge that links Detroit with Windsor, Ontario. The caller said a bomb would go off in 10 minutes along the busy freight crossing, police Inspector Don Johnson said during a news conference Monday night.

Needles Found in Sandwiches on Four Delta Flights 16 Jul 2012 Two passengers suffered minor injuries from needles found in the meat of sandwiches served aboard four Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam to the United States Sunday, federal officials report. The FBI is now  investigating those incidents. The sandwiches were served to business class passengers, crew members and government employees flying from Amsterdam to the United States. At least one batch of 17 sandwiches appeared to be made by a U.S. company based at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. Those sandwiches were served board Delta's flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul Sunday afternoon.

36 Percent of Fukushima Children Have Abnormal Growths From Radiation Exposure 16 Jul 2012 Of more than 38,000 children tested from the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan, 36 percent have abnormal growths cysts or nodules on their thyroids a year after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, as reported by ENENews. The shocking numbers come from the thyroid examination section of the "Sixth Report of Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey," published by Fukushima Radioactive Contamination Symptoms Research (FRCSR) and translated by the blog Fukushima Voice.

HSBC Allegedly Financed al-Qaeda, Made Billions on Illegal US Drug Sales: Report 17 Jul 2012 ...The result of the Senate's work, a nearly 400-page report, describes in exhaustive detail how HSBC Holdings Plc. executives repeatedly ignored warning signs from their own compliance officers, and from outside regulators, all of whom watched what they believed to be billions of dollars in suspicious transactions passing through the bank without adequate scrutiny. The report describes how HSBC's Mexican affiliate moved $7 billion in physical U.S. dollars through the bank in a two-year stretch, "raising red flags that the volume of dollars included proceeds from illegal drug sales in the United States." It lays out how HSBC's executives ignored warnings that it was providing currency to a Saudi bank alleged by some U.S. officials to be involved in financing al-Qaeda al-CIAduh.

New York and Connecticut look into Libor rate-fixing allegations 16 Jul 2012 New York and Connecticut attorneys general have joined forces to investigate alleged manipulation of the Libor interest rates. The scandal is already being investigated by the US justice department and financial regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. But the involvement of New York state is likely to ramp up the investigation. New York state's Martin Act gives its attorney general the most wide-ranging investigative powers of any state.

McCain: Palin was 'better candidate' than Romney 17 Jul 2012 Mitt Romney's tax returns had nothing to do with Sen. John McCain's decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, according to the Arizona Republican, saying he chose the former Alaska governor because she was a "better candidate." McCain received more than two decades worth of Romney's tax returns as the former Massachusetts governor was undergoing the vetting process four years ago, far more than Romney has released publicly in the 2012 campaign. Democrats have questioned whether McCain saw something untoward in those tax returns and decided to choose Palin instead.

Reid: 'Angry old white men' trying to buy elections 16 Jul 2012 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says a group of "angry old white men" is bankrolling conservative outside groups that are spending millions to influence the fall elections. "If this flood of outside money continues, the day after the election, 17 angry old white men will wake up and realize they've just bought the country," Reid said on the floor. "That's a sad commentary. About 60 percent or more of these outside groups' dollars are coming from these 17 people. These donors have something in common with their nominee. Like Mitt Romney, they believe they play by their own set of rules."

Arpaio: Obama birth record 'definitely fraudulent' 18 Jul 2012 Investigators for an Arizona sheriff's volunteer posse have declared that President Barack Obama's birth certificate is definitely fraudulent. Members of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posse said in March that there was probable cause that Obama's long-form birth certificate released by the White House in April 2011 was a computer-generated forgery. Now, Arpaio says investigators are positive it's fraudulent. Mike Zullo, the posse's chief investigator, said numeric codes on certain parts of the birth certificate indicate that those parts weren't filled out, yet those sections asking for the race of Obama's father and his field of work or study were completed.

Polar Bear Lullabies 17 Jul 2012 Polar bears in Canada's western Hudson Bay are beginning to come ashore for the summer, four weeks earlier than the average return date during the 1980s. Because the ice in Hudson Bay melts completely during summer, the region's polar bears - which, like all members of the species, hunt seals on sea ice - spend the summer months holed up in cool earthen dens until the ice returns. Because sea ice has been melting earlier and forming later in the bay in recent years, bears have been forced to spend more time on land and less on the ice, reducing their ability to eat and raising concerns about the population's future... Here is video of Russian polar bear patrol officer and researcher Vladilen Kavriy singing two polar bears to sleep with a lullaby.
