If your into peer to peer file share, they were available there, the quality
of the recording was OK, but watchable, you can burn the files to dvd's from
your computer and then you have them for yourself...
I got mine a few years ago that way don't know if they are still posted or
not....

I just joined the group (yea). I would love to send Mr. Burke an e-mail to
let him know how much I absolutely LOVE Connections. Though I'm 44, I never
saw it on TV as a kid and just stumbled on it through my boyfriend. HE
remembers watching it back in 1979 and got me the DVDs of the original
series. How I would love to have the rest of the series, but the DVDs on
Amazon are almost $500. Is there any less expensive or free way to see
them?

And I see that 'Connections I' and TDtUC are both under
$150 for the sets now. Hurrah!

Not directly - there are no books entitled 'Connections2', etc.
Normally I'd refer you to the excellent James Burke Fan Companion
site, but the server isn't responding. I hope that a temporary
issue. If it comes back, it is here:

In the meantime, here's a list of his books:

I've been watching Connections 2 and 3 on You tube.
Are there any books based on those two series?
I have several books already - Connections, Knowledge web, Circles,
Tracks and American Connections.
I also wish to load up the episodes in order onto my blog, so I can
watch them properly instead of havung to hunt for the next clip every
10 minutes.

Quick question for you. Can you tell me if this is a free seminar or
if there is a fee that has to be paid? It does not indicate about a
fee or anything else on the registration page. I would love to sign
up but i would like to be sure about that first. Thanx

Just to spike some discussion, who here prefers Burke over Gore for
documentaries? Did Burke win any Nobel Prizes?
Are politicians more important than thoughtful people that encourage
learning and critical thinking? Am I asking too many inconvenient questions?

For anyone interested... There is an original set of 10 VHS tapes of
'The Day the Universe Changed' currently for auction on eBay. Not
something seen very often!
The auction ends on Sunday, Dec-16-07 18:45:00 PST. They look to be
the same original tapes from Churchill Video that they charge $750 for...
Here's the auction link, or search 'james burke universe' to find the
auction on eBay.

I'm about 80 pages into it, reading a little bit at a time as I can -
been busy.
I like it, but it is very 'light'. It is more entertaining than
educational. I enjoy the humor and comments, but it really isn't what
I expected. I guess I was expecting more connections about the
founding fathers and more about their lives, but really they're just a
jumping off point for the threads from then until modern times.
A lot of the connections are pretty tenuous - just a brush pass in
history. Which is something I felt later works have suffered from -
compare Connections^3 to the original Connections and you'll see many
of the links are weaker.
But, still, it is a fun book to read and I'm quite enjoying it. It
just isn't as meaty as some of his other books.

A major yay from me because the book came out on July 4th. Much to my
happiness. I got a copy of the book yesterday and I can't wait to
read it. I've been waiting since last year for this book to come
out. So has anyone else picked up the book yet? Just curious. Can't
wait to see what everyone thinks. Take care.
American Connections
THE FOUNDING FATHERS. NETWORKED.
In AMERICAN CONNECTIONS: The Founding Fathers. Networked. (Simon &
Schuster Trade Paperbacks; July 2007; $17.00), James Burke –
best-selling writer, television host, and world-renowned authority on
the history of technology and science – returns to the format of his
perennially popular book, Connections. Exploring the interconnections
between the men who signed the Declaration of Independence and a
countless array of artists, writers, scientists, politicians,
trendsetters and scoundrels who came after them, AMERICAN CONNECTIONS
celebrates the "six degrees of separation" that make history both
fascinating and relevant. With his trademark irreverent wit and
astounding erudition, Burke employs a dazzling narrative legerdemain
as he brings each of the fifty-six historical threads full-circle to a
modern-day bearer of the Founding Father's name.
Burke begins each chapter with a thumbnail sketch of the Declaration
signer, often dispelling the notion that these iconic figures (many of
them now virtually forgotten) were men of perfect principles. John
Hancock, for instance, was an egomaniac whom nobody liked. Samuel
Chase was "universally despised… a foul-mouthed rabble-rouser." Carter
Braxton's complexion "reflected the glow of a good Madeira." John Hart
slept in a doghouse. Richard Stockton changed his mind, repudiating
his signature and swearing allegiance to the king (albeit after being
caught and imprisoned by the British).
After reintroducing these history-making men, Burke then takes
readers on mini-tours through time. With numerous stops along the
way, Benjamin Franklin's connections take us from that remarkable
American Renaissance man to "Owl and the Pussycat" poet Edward Lear,
then onto early chain-bookstore pioneer W.H. Smith, Florence
Nightingale, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Carl Zeiss. Thomas Jefferson
leads to an Italian political philosopher named Cesare Beccaria, who
first "measured" the meter, to James Smithson (he of the Smithsonian
Institution), to the inventor of the kaleidoscope, the discovery of
hay fever, an early proponent of anesthesia, and Albert Einstein. From
John Adams, known in his day as "His Rotundity," we meet teacher of
the deaf Thomas Gallaudet, Sir Walter Scott, J.M.W. Turner, and
Clementine Hozier (wife of Winston Churchill).
Hi! The first broadcast of Connections 1 was made by the official TV
station in Argentina in 1980/81, with spanish audio tracks. I could
get the audio for 5 chapters, but with a poor quality. Any chance to
get the audio tracks in spanish? Same for Connections 2 & 3. Thanks in
advnace. Roberto. Buenos Aires, Argentina
