The attached historic photograph was sent to us by George Rotondo (member of the original Passions, "Just to Be With You").

The photo is simply "A Gift From Our Grandfathers," an undated WWI snapshot.

Enclosed is a fascinating analysis of Dreamgirls Vs Jersey Boys.
Bernadette Carroll called my attention to this review on the website Culture Vulture
- I have reprinted it with a larger, more easily readable type-size. Read it at your leisure.

As an old rock and roller who first listened to the Supremes and the Four Seasons on a little AM radio over forty years ago, it is a surprise and pleasure for me to see these groups now in the Broadway and Hollywood spotlight.

With rock and roll music being celebrated, mythologized, and yes, packaged, nationwide to general movie and musical audiences, it is hard to conceive that it began in the 1950’s with African American ghetto kids singing on street corners and older rhythm and blues singers singing at small African American clubs.

It certainly wasn’t music my parents understood or accepted.  I remember my father, in a fit of temper from hearing “that jungle music,” jumping on our hi-fi set and breaking a prized record by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters.  So, when my parents thought I was doing homework or sleeping in my room, I listened to rock and roll on the radio, to DJ greats like Harlem’s WWRL’s Jocko and Dr. Jive and WINS’ Alan Freed.  This was the wonderful era of Doo Wop groups who sang only for their own insular audience.

The Supremes and the Four Seasons appeared on the music scene several years later, when African American style rock and roll was spreading among teenagers across the country.  Big money could be made if the sound was moderated from street corner Rock and Roll to a Pop sound that could appeal to a mass White audience.

Jersey Boys, a Tony award winning Broadway musical, now also on tour, is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, four tough White kids from blue collar New Jersey who created a new harmonic sound that some have called ”White Doo Wop.” Dreamgirls was a hit musical in the early 1980’s.  In the show, the three fictional members of the African American girl group are from Harlem; in the movie, they’re from Detroit and more closely resemble the Supremes with their symbiotic relationship with the head of an African American record company that looks a lot like Motown.

Both the Jersey Boys and the Dreamgirls start out in their early teens in the late 50’s and modify their image to become Pop singers who can sell records.  The Jersey Boys have to overcome and grow beyond their rough gangster background and persona, while the Dreamgirls and their music have to become less soulful, more polished and mainstream.
In both Jersey Boys and Dreamgirls, we watch not only the rise of rock and roll stars, but we also watch kids grow up.  We see their modest beginnings, their rise to fame; we watch them cope with success and we witness their personal demons.  Interestingly, in both productions, none of the singers evolve much as individuals over the course of their careers.  Their basic personalities and all their insecurities, flaws and failings do not change, but simply mature.  It is the elemental nature of their flaws and failings and their inability to conquer them that give the two stories, but especially Dreamgirls, a hint of Shakespearean tragedy.

Because it was originally created as a musical show, and then enhanced for the film, Dreamgirls has much more fleshed-out characters and a more cohesive and dramatic story line than Jersey Boys.  There were no surprises or nuances in the Dreamgirls plot, but it was absorbing.

Dreamgirls is a film with big name stars, including Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover, who give first-rate performances, especially Eddie Murphy.  Jennifer Hudson, an American Idol finalist, but a contest loser, stole this, her first, movie with her soulful six-octave voice and fine acting.  The movie audience clapped and cheered for her song, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going. Many of the songs in Dreamgirls are from the musical and some are new.  But they were terrific and some were quite moving.  The songs were much better integrated into the plot than those of Jersey Boys, having been written especially for it.  But unlike Jersey Boys, in Dreamgirls,we are not hearing the simpler, genuine hits we knew and loved.  Dreamgirls has great production values, costumes, sets, makeup and sound.  And all this glitz is integral to the appeal of the film.
Jersey Boys, on the other hand, largely consists of four unknown actors on a bare two-story set and is a bit more like a revue or concert than a well-made play. But unlike Dreamgirls, it is the group’s real-life history accompanied by all their familiar hits.  It is a very interesting history, and one with which I had been unfamiliar.

I saw Jersey Boys in San Francisco and had a really good time.  The acting, singing and staging were excellent.  The Four Seasons’ music, which had never moved me, sounded wonderful in the theater with modern acoustics and great singers.  I now realize that part of my prior indifference to the Four Seasons was that on my little radio, their falsetto and harmonics sounded tinny.

The second act, which was more dramatic, was more satisfying theater than the first act, but what can I say…all the music in Jersey Boys was great.  For all you old American Bandstand fans: it’s really good to dance to; I’ll give it a 90.  I mouthed the words to all the songs, and sang a bit, too.  The San Francisco audience was not old enough to all be original fans of the Four Season; yet, their applause and bravos were long and heartfelt.
So why are the lives of these old rock and roll groups being resurrected now?  It’s not just the music, although that may be a good enough reason.  And it can’t just be to capitalize on the nostalgia effect, since the original rock and rollers are too old now to be the target audience.  No, it’s that these life stories have universal appeal.  They are inspirational tales of unlikely climbs to success with all its heady glamour.  But also they are tales of friendship and betrayal, the tragedy of young talent gone astray, and the pain of love and loss.  There is nothing subtle, sophisticated or new about either Dreamgirls or Jersey Boys, but there is heart.

To cut to the chase…Jersey Boys is a lively and enjoyable night at the theater, with great music and a plot that doesn’t always connect with the music, but it doesn’t have to . . .  Dreamgirls is a splashy film with a great cast, strong performances, terrific music and an engrossing, though more familiar, story.

Re; The New York World Fair.

I spent two sweltering summers entertaining at The New York
World's Fair, performing for tourists, happy to pay the two dollars
just for a place to sit, eat their Belgian waffles and rest their
feet. For the first season our "twist" revue played at the Bourbon
Street pavilion, a jazz joint with Gene Krupa's quintet at the bar.
As an extra added attraction, I found a "twister," a knockout blond
dancer, who twisted so fast and furious that she claimed to lose ten-
pounds after each performance. We did four shows a day. Scales were
brought onto the stage for her pre-show weigh-in. It was all too
bizarre.

When the really big World's Fair extravaganza at The Texas
Pavilion shutdown for lack of interest, we were invited to appear at
the 5000 seat arena, based on the approval of fair officials. We were
required to audition for the ubiquitous Robert Moses, the sourpuss,
self-proclaimed arbiter of taste to the cultured masses who shuffled
aimlessly around Flushing Meadows each day. Robert Moses sat way back
there, alone in the bleachers, and we danced our way through our hour
of mashed potatoes, slop, Popeye, pony, monkey, mouse, jerk, fly,
swim, stroll, cha cha, chalypso, funky-chicken, boogaloo, limbo,
hully-gully, hucklebuck, hand-jive, and twist.

The next day, in a page one story in the New York Times,
Mr. Moses declared, "Clay Cole's Twistarama is a dirty, filthy,
rotten show." Thanks to Mr. Moses' front-page review, we played four
shows a day for the remainder of the summer.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. - Clay

What's the story about the Summer Time Revue starring Clay Cole
out at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadow in July 1964?
Rumor has it that Robert Moses himself had it shut down, after a run
of only a week a or two. True, or not true? How come?
It was in the Aquacade stadium after the grandiose Leonidoff's
Wonder World show went belly up.
I have a picture or two of the Aquacade facade gussied up with Clay
Cole signs.

Thanks,

Randy

Producing my own show I find the music from the 50's and 60's is my cup

to name a few, I also listen and play on my show many of their songs
that were never played on radio or released as singles.. Many are just
as good if not better than the ones that charted...

Well Tommy ... after having constructed a ten-page website and a Yahoo Group with 500 photos, 50 links and dozens of files, you would think I knew what a URL was.

    I have no idea ...
but I think Yahoo Groups asks members to identify their URL when signing on.

    So, I 'googled' it:

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
An URL is similar to your street address for your home. Just as your street address lets the pizza delivery man find your house, a web page's URL lets it be found by any other computer connected to the Internet - and you don't have to tip.

The URL for my website is www.claycoleshow.com

The URL for the Yahoo Group is  http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/claycoleshow

Joining the group on Yahoo is a hassle. Yahoo asks you to identify yourself with email address. They are not gathering information; they want to make sure you are legit, to elimate SPAMMERS from flooding the group with junk mail. It is not necessary to fill out a Yahoo profile, just come up with a password and add your city. I also reccommend that you check "no mail" - you can read all email messages on the group page:

    Thanks, Clay

    Clay,

What a joy to see you back! I grew up in Teaneck, NJ and watched and enjoyed your TV shows whenever I could. Also, even though I never met you, I also saw you in person many times at nearby Palisades Park. Oh, those were the days, those wonderful days!

I worked for Casey Kasem for 15 years as the East Coast researcher on his syndicated radio show "American Top Forty." My main job was to do private off-the-air phone interviews with the hottest current recording artists as well as the top oldies acts. I did hundreds of those interviews and I must confess that I learned so much about the fine art of interviewing from watching you do it. I consider you and Casey to be my two primary broadcasting mentors.

These days I am still doing interviews with recording artists but, unlike my interviews for Casey, these are on-air phone interviews with me hosting my own shows. It was you, Clay, who inspired me to reach for this particular brass ring and I am delighted that I can publicly thank you here.

I am thrilled to see your website and I am sure that what you have up now  is only the very beginning. I am visiting it every day to see what you have added. With so many so-called oldies stations today pretending that the 50s and 60s never existed, what you are doing is a breath of fresh air and long overdue! They say that a picture is worth a thousand words: I believe the pictures you have here, considering the individuals and the wonderful memories that they bring back, are worth a few gazillion words.

I wish you all the success in the world with the website and all of your other projects. You are the best and you deserve nothing less!

    Ronnie Allen

I am completely dedicated to the music of the 50's and early 60's and
I'm sure this is a good place to learn more about it from others who
share the same type interests in music.

I've had an album for many years called "CLAY'S COLE BIN" with a great
collection of oldies on it and am curious as to when it was originally
released. Can anyone help as to when it was originally issued?

I haven't been through this site thoroughly yet,BUT I have checked out
all the GREAT photos, they are SUPER.
A big "Thank You" for all these great photos.

I will try to show my appreciation by spreading the word so others
    will know about the site.
    Sincerely,
               Wes Smith
    P.S. ...50'S AND EARLY 60'S MUSIC FOREVER!!!

    Hi Clay,

I love this journey into "NostalgiaVille"...the photos are priceless and a joy to see..I have been blessed and honored to have worked with you in the early 60's...and will treasure each and every memory of that time. You were incredibly talented in every way, sing, dance, act, and make people laugh their heads off..and no one could do an interview like you.

You are the "BEST" Clay and I love You, from the heart,

    Denise of the Delicates/aka/Liz

    Clay:

I was on your show back in the early days when you got me tickets to
sit in the "on air live" galleries for the Pinkey Lee and the Howdie
Doodie Shows! I still have the original tickets! What a blast from
the past!! There are some things you never forget! Hope you are doing
well. Understand you have a biography coming out soon? Any news on
the release? How can I get a copy?

Love from the gang at Nathan's!!
