This  was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive.  It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton.  If you are tired of the gas prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to  read this please.

 

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy gas on a certain day'  campaign  that was going around last April or May!

It's  worth your consideration.  Join the resistance!!!!

 

I  hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 + per gallon by this summer and it might go even higher!!  Want gasoline prices to come down?

 

We  CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

 

Here's  the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two  biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.

 

If  they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.    If they  reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit

 

But  to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas  buyers.  It's really simple to do!  Now, don't wimp out on me at this  point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of  people!!

 

I  am sending this note to 30 people.  If each of us send it to at least ten  more (30 x 10 = 300) ...  and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =  3,000)... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will  have reached over THREE MILLION consumers .

If  those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30  million people will have been contacted!

 

If  it goes one level further, you guessed it.....  THREE HUNDRED  MILLION PEOPLE!!!

 

Again,  all you have to do is send this to 10 people.  That's all!

 

(If  you still don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send  this to 10 people....  Well, let's face it, you just aren't a  mathematician.  But I am .  So trust me on this one. )

 

How  long would all that take?  If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more  people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be  contacted within the next 8 days!!!

 

I'll  bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!

Acting  together we can make a difference.

 

If  this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.  I suggest that we not buy from EXXON or MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND  KEEP THEM DOWN.  THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

 

                Lets Try  Something Different...Keep this moving!

My dear friends

I am holding in my hand the only proof that the Clay Cole Show ever existed. An audio recording of my December 25th, 1965 Christmas telecast arrived in the mail today from one of the artists, Debbie Ferrara. This is a most wonderful, surprising Christmas gift.
It has been well-documented in pop culture circles that my station,  WPIX Ch 11, ereased all the videotapes of my programs in a cost-cutting directive by management. The tape stock could be reused, recorded over. That penny-pinching decision eresaed hours of precious moments of rock 'n' roll history, during the revolutionary  explosion of the 1960s. This pre-taped program was broaedcast on Saturday, December 25th, Christmas Day, with, among many guest stars, Simon & Garfunkel, Roy Hamilton, George Carlin and five year old Debbie Ferrara.
 
I have posted on my website my memories and the backstory to that special broadcast.
 

Here's what I didn't post: It's amazing that this is the one show that remains, because it evokes so many persopnal memories.

   The show was taped shortly after I returned from my honeymoon in Old Quebec, Canada - I was giddy with happiness at the surrounding events.

    The show's producer was Ken Johnson, who shortly therefter left to produce the Mike Douglas Show and later created and produced Incredible  Hulk, Wonder Woman and the sci-fi classic V. 

     In all my years on TV I adlibbed every word spoken. Ken hired two young writers Gail Parent & Kenny Sohlms to give me some zippy lines. This was their first professional writing job. They soon went on to Hollywood and became members of the writing staff for the long-running Carole Burnett Show on CBS.

     At that time, I was also broadcasting The Clay Cole Sunday Show with The Del Satins, Tracey Dey, Angela Martin. Our guest celebrity that Sunday was the actor Lawrence Harvey.

 

    The hour seemed to whiz by ... just like life ... where did all the years go?
It was the time of my life. Until today, it was just a distant memory. Thanks to her daddy, and Debbie's kindness, I was once again back there in 1965, welcoming you to another Clay Cole Saturday night. Weren't we somethin'                                       With love - Clay Cole

A million dollar line-up that a million dollars couldn't reproduce today. Memories are our gold standard -- Priceless.

I WILL SURVIVE:  GLORIA GAYNOR HOSPITALIZED
Gloria Gaynor, appearing in Russia over the weekend, was hospitalized with a  blood disorder, possibly related to a recent knee operation. Gaynor charted a private jet to transfer her home from Russia  to New Jersey, where she was immediately admitted to a Newark hospital.
The Grammy-winning star was scheduled to perform tonight Tuesday) at a state dinner in Washington DC, for 300 Diplomats and their spouses, hosted by Secretary of State Condalezza Rice. Agents are scurrying to find a last-minute replacement.

LEGENDARY SESSION MUSICIANS INDUCTED INTO MUSICIANS HALL
NASHVILLE, Monday night, The Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum inducted its first class of inductees, The Nashville A-Team;  Motown's Funk Brothers;  Muscle Shoals' Wrecking Crew;  Memphis Boys; The Tennessee Two; and The Blue Moon Boys. The Hall of Fame opened last year just south of Nashvilles honky-tonk district to honor the musicians who helped create some of the most memorable recordings in popular music but who often get overlooked. The musicians played on hits for artists including The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, George Jones, The Supremes, Frank Sinatra and others.

JOEY DEE RE-MARRIES IN SECRET LAS VEGAS CEREMONY  
Last night, Joey Dee exchganged wedding vows with his former first-wife Joan in a hush-hush ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel. Even Joey's two children and family members have not been notified.  Attending were best-man Frank DeVito (Four Seasons) and his wife Edda and Ray Reneri. The presiding Judge from Lodi, New Jersey, was a former "Starlighters" drummer. When the bride,  looking stunning in a beige outfit,  presented her ring,  she asked the African-American minister to read the inside inscription before she slipped it on Joey's finger. The minister put on his glasses, squinted and repeated the inscription, "Do Not Remove" to howl of laughter.
A champagne dinner reception was celebrated at Piero's restaurant. Following Joe's first marriage to Joan, he married Lois Lee, the vocalist who once worked with Johnny Maestro in a self-contained Crests group. Lois was involved with Joey in the The Foundation For The Love of Rock 'n' Roll. Joey Dee and Reneri are in Las Vegas attending the  Fair and Convention Bookers Convention at the Paris Hotel, LV - Clay Cole

I have just received an Email confirming a rumor that has been circulating for many weeks. Many knew that Nick was suffering an asbestos-related cancer (probably related to his NYPD duties), but no one would (or could) confirm the seriousness of his deterioration.
 
This is sad news indeed.
Any one with further information or details, please contact me so I can update the story on my website.
 
And say a prayer for Nick, Frank and Tom.

CAPRIS LEAD-SINGER NICK SANTOS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AMID CANCER RUMORS 
November 24:  There have been rumors circulating for weeks that Nick Santos was deteriorating from an illness, and as a result, the popular doo wop group would disband. Noone from the group would respond to direct questions, but I have received this account from an audience member at Cool Bobby B's Doo Wop Convention in Las Vegas, where Nick and the Capris appeared.

"Lead singer Nick Santamaria (aka/Nick Santos) did well, in spite of a struggle to keep his breath while singing and near exhaustion between songs. He talked with the audience and mentioned he has had one lung removed due to an asbestos-related cancer (Mesothelioma). He said his condition was terminal.  After their performance, Nick told the other group members backstage that he will no longer perform, as he had great difficulty this night and did not think he had it in him anymore to continue with performances. He told his fellow Capris that as of that night, November 18, 2007, The Capris are disbanded. "  
Nick was an original member of the Carpris in the early 60s, then served in the Army and was a decorated detective in the NYPD. Other group members Frank Reina and Tom Ferrara could not be reacxhed for comment

Enclosed is a fascinating analysis of Dreamgirls Vs Jersey Boys.
Bernadette Carroll called my attention to this review on the website Culture Vulture
- I have reprinted it with a larger, more easily readable type-size. Read it at your leisure.
 
As an old rock and roller who first listened to the Supremes and the Four Seasons on a little AM radio over forty years ago, it is a surprise and pleasure for me to see these groups now in the Broadway and Hollywood spotlight.
 
With rock and roll music being celebrated, mythologized, and yes, packaged, nationwide to general movie and musical audiences, it is hard to conceive that it began in the 1950s with African American ghetto kids singing on street corners and older rhythm and blues singers singing at small African American clubs.
 
It certainly wasnt music my parents understood or accepted.  I remember my father, in a fit of temper from hearing that jungle music, jumping on our hi-fi set and breaking a prized record by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters.  So, when my parents thought I was doing homework or sleeping in my room, I listened to rock and roll on the radio, to DJ greats like Harlems WWRLs Jocko and Dr. Jive and WINS Alan Freed.  This was the wonderful era of Doo Wop groups who sang only for their own insular audience.
 
The Supremes and the Four Seasons appeared on the music scene several years later, when African American style rock and roll was spreading among teenagers across the country.  Big money could be made if the sound was moderated from street corner Rock and Roll to a Pop sound that could appeal to a mass White audience. 
 
Jersey Boys, a Tony award winning Broadway musical, now also on tour, is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, four tough White kids from blue collar New Jersey who created a new harmonic sound that some have called White Doo Wop. Dreamgirls was a hit musical in the early 1980s.  In the show, the three fictional members of the African American girl group are from Harlem; in the movie, theyre from Detroit and more closely resemble the Supremes with their symbiotic relationship with the head of an African American record company that looks a lot like Motown.  
 
Both the Jersey Boys and the Dreamgirls start out in their early teens in the late 50s and modify their image to become Pop singers who can sell records.  The Jersey Boys have to overcome and grow beyond their rough gangster background and persona, while the Dreamgirls and their music have to become less soulful, more polished and mainstream.
In both Jersey Boys and Dreamgirls, we watch not only the rise of rock and roll stars, but we also watch kids grow up.  We see their modest beginnings, their rise to fame; we watch them cope with success and we witness their personal demons.  Interestingly, in both productions, none of the singers evolve much as individuals over the course of their careers.  Their basic personalities and all their insecurities, flaws and failings do not change, but simply mature.  It is the elemental nature of their flaws and failings and their inability to conquer them that give the two stories, but especially Dreamgirls, a hint of Shakespearean tragedy.
 
Because it was originally created as a musical show, and then enhanced for the film, Dreamgirls has much more fleshed-out characters and a more cohesive and dramatic story line than Jersey Boys.  There were no surprises or nuances in the Dreamgirls plot, but it was absorbing.
 
Dreamgirls is a film with big name stars, including Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover, who give first-rate performances, especially Eddie Murphy.  Jennifer Hudson, an American Idol finalist, but a contest loser, stole this, her first, movie with her soulful six-octave voice and fine acting.  The movie audience clapped and cheered for her song, And I Am Telling You Im Not Going. Many of the songs in Dreamgirls are from the musical and some are new.  But they were terrific and some were quite moving.  The songs were much better integrated into the plot than those of Jersey Boys, having been written especially for it.  But unlike Jersey Boys, in Dreamgirls,we are not hearing the simpler, genuine hits we knew and loved.  Dreamgirls has great production values, costumes, sets, makeup and sound.  And all this glitz is integral to the appeal of the film.
Jersey Boys, on the other hand, largely consists of four unknown actors on a bare two-story set and is a bit more like a revue or concert than a well-made play. But unlike Dreamgirls, it is the groups real-life history accompanied by all their familiar hits.  It is a very interesting history, and one with which I had been unfamiliar. 
 
I saw Jersey Boys in San Francisco and had a really good time.  The acting, singing and staging were excellent.  The Four Seasons music, which had never moved me, sounded wonderful in the theater with modern acoustics and great singers.  I now realize that part of my prior indifference to the Four Seasons was that on my little radio, their falsetto and harmonics sounded tinny.
 
The second act, which was more dramatic, was more satisfying theater than the first act, but what can I sayall the music in Jersey Boys was great.  For all you old American Bandstand fans: its really good to dance to; Ill give it a 90.  I mouthed the words to all the songs, and sang a bit, too.  The San Francisco audience was not old enough to all be original fans of the Four Season; yet, their applause and bravos were long and heartfelt. 
So why are the lives of these old rock and roll groups being resurrected now?  Its not just the music, although that may be a good enough reason.  And it cant just be to capitalize on the nostalgia effect, since the original rock and rollers are too old now to be the target audience.  No, its that these life stories have universal appeal.  They are inspirational tales of unlikely climbs to success with all its heady glamour.  But also they are tales of friendship and betrayal, the tragedy of young talent gone astray, and the pain of love and loss.  There is nothing subtle, sophisticated or new about either Dreamgirls or Jersey Boys, but there is heart.
 
To cut to the chaseJersey Boys is a lively and enjoyable night at the theater, with great music and a plot that doesnt always connect with the music, but it doesnt have to . . .  Dreamgirls is a splashy film with a great cast, strong performances, terrific music and an engrossing, though more familiar, story.
