ATWT PreVUE: Week of February 16 Edition
Sunday, February 15, 2009 10:51 AM ET | By Venus Stone

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) -- So long, farewell....

THIS WEEK ON: AS THE WORLD TURNS

Luke and Noah go on a witch hunt when they begin searching for
evidence to nail Elwood for the death of Reg on Thursday, February 19.
When Kevin pushes some vital information about Elwood, they begin
working harder to trap him. Matt continues to get closer to Alison, to
the disappointment of Casey. Liberty and Parker take Johnny on a
special Valentine's Day trip when they read stories to him featuring
some of Oakdale's citizens.

The Inside Story: Ce la Vie A defeated Paul facing kidnapping charges
decides to plead guilty for his crime. As he waits for the verdict
Dusty approaches Meg and stresses she should speak out against Paul to
sway the judge's decision in giving out a stiffer sentence.
Unfortuately for Dusty, Meg feels that she doesn't need to do that. To
everyone's chagrin Josie goes before the judge and gives him a reason
to decide to suspend not only Paul's sentence but give him supervised
visitations to Eliza. Dusty fumes upon the news and shuns Josie when
she goes over to the farm to explain why she did what she did. Barbara
realizing that Josie could be the person to be there for her troubled
son and asks Josie if she's willing to do that. Josie later pays a
visit to Paul and the moment becomes tense when he kisses her, which
stuns her. At the farmhouse meantime, papers are delivered to Meg
informing her that all of Paul's assests belong to her. Dusty
retrieves and hides the papers rather than inform Meg. He then heads
to Fairwinds and spies a close moment between Paul and Josie. He soon
jabs at Paul telling him that Meg no longer wants any part if him in
her life. The minute Dusty departs Josie tells Paul that she believes
it is time for her to leave Oakdale for good. After leaving Fairwinds,
Josie goes to find Dusty, who isn't all that thrilled to see her. She
tells him that it is time for her to move on and that she hopes he
finds true happiness.

A Closer Look: Back in Business
Still sore by Carly's rejection of him, Craig goes to Lily's and tells
her that Carly never came up with the idea of Midnight Sun, but rather
it was his concept. Lily becomes upset that she's once again falling
for Carly's schemes but quickly remembers that Craig isn't always on
the level either and dismisses what he says. After talking to Carly,
Lily meets up with Henry and they devise a plan on how to get the
inspector to focus on making a deal with Carly only. Unfortunately
their scheme falls apart when Craig catches wind of it. Carly
reluctantly agrees to work with Craig but Lily says that if she ever

Y&R,Don Diamont's Exit Interview

Soap star reflects on his unexpected exit

By Bill DeYoung

Created 2009-02-06 00:30

Brad Carlton died this week. The handsome Wisconsin businessman
drowned in an icy lake, after bravely leaping into the frigid water to
rescue a local kid.

This was bad news for fans of "The Young and the Restless," the CBS
daytime drama on which Brad had been a major character since 1985.

Nor was it a red-letter moment for Don Diamont, the actor who'd played
the role since the beginning. Just two years ago, the fan site
soaphunks.net [1] voted Diamont the No. 1 Sexiest Soap Hunk of All Time.

Your character getting killed off is just about the worst thing that
can happen to a soap opera star. Barring a miraculous resurrection or
an "evil twin" storyline, you're not likely to return.

"On the one hand, I thought there was the potential for it, based on
the way they had been writing the character for a while," said
Diamont, who'll appear with seven other daytime stars Sunday at a "fan
event" at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center.

"And on the other hand I was still surprised by it."

Industry speculation is that Diamont, at 46, was just too old to keep
on the payroll. Many soaps are bringing in increasingly younger
characters, in the hopes of attracting younger viewers.

Diamont, who shot his final scenes Dec. 23, won't speculate on his sad
sacking, or sling any mud. Instead, he takes the high road.

"I have nothing but gratitude for the show," he said during a phone
interview. "It's been a wonderful experience in every way, and I'm
just going to miss a lot of the personal relationships as far as the
show is concerned."

One of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in
1990, Diamont has twin boys with wife Cindy Ambuehl, and four sons
from a previous marriage.

During a three-year hiatus from "The Young and the Restless," he
appeared in several movies, including "Anger Management" and "Loyal
Opposition."

With that in mind, he's weighing his employment options.

"I'm taking it a day at a time," Diamont says. "I'm going to stay in
the business, but I don't know if I'm going to continue to do daytime,
or if I'll do nighttime ... I'm going to do something I haven't done
in years, which is go on interviews, read for some things and see what
happens. I'm actually pretty excited about it."

For now, there's Sunday's event, "Soap Opera Mania on Tour." He enjoys
meeting fans; and since the news broke last month of Brad Carlton's
impending exit, the Internet has been humming with their unhappiness.

"I've been very, very touched by the fans," Diamont said. "Soap Opera
Digest wrote a beautiful 'Thumbs Down' about it, and all the fans'
blogging has been overwhelmingly negative in terms of them getting rid
of the character. So I've been very touched by all the comments, and
outpouring of emotion and dissatisfaction."

Josie Leaves Town

Paul pleads guilty to kidnapping and is about to receive his sentence.
Dusty urges Meg to speak out against her ex, but she won't. "He
doesn't know why she's so tight-lipped," sighs Grayson McCouch
(Dusty). "A couple of trials have gone down with surprise turnouts and
Dusty doesn't know why she wouldn't say anything." Instead, Josie
comes to Paul's aid, which prompts the judge to give him a suspended
sentence and supervised visits with Eliza. "Josie comes in with the
words that turn around the judge. It's kind of weird; I don't know
where the credentials come from," notes McCouch. "He doesn't even know
what she's doing in the courtroom. But, the judge allows Paul to see
Eliza. Dusty is surprised, but it's not too severe an outcome, because
deep inside, Meg wants Paul to be involved in their daughter's life
and be a father." Josies goes to the farm to try and explain to Dusty
and Meg why she defended Paul, but they don't want to listen. "He
doesn't care about Josie anymore," says the actor. "She's a bad
babysitter and has caused a lot of trouble." Josie leaves and goes to
Fairwinds, where Barbara asks her to try to help Paul. Josie tries to
comfort him, and he kisses her. A surprised Josie slaps him, which
causes him to have a breakdown. Meanwhile, at the farm, a messenger
brings papers for Meg that give her all of Paul's assets. Dusty hides
them, then heads to Fairwinds and spies a close moment between Paul
and Josie. "Paul tries to give Meg all this extra attention, handing
off this and that, and it doesn't have to do with the matter at hand,
so Dusty lets Paul know that Meg is not into him anymore and she means
business," says McCouch. After Dusty leaves, Josie realizes that
there's nothing left for her in Oakdale and tells Paul she's leaving
town. She then says good-bye to Dusty. "She tells him to be happy,
which always gets one's attention," observes McCouch. "I guess she has
him there; the guy's got to find a little bliss somewhere. It's just
not coming to him." Though Dusty doesn't care about Josie, McCouch is
more praiseworthy of co-star Kristen Connolly. "She's awesome; a
great, great actress. She gets her job done easily, skillfully, and it
was a pleasure all around. She's going to go on and do great things,
that's for sure."

Now that Dusty has ended things with Josie, who should he hook up with
next? Grayson McCouch says: "Maybe Bonnie. She's a good lawyer, a real
whip. That could be interesting, especially with Derek in the mix."

--From Soap opera Digest and Weekly Insider (about all soaps)

SOAP OPERA DIGEST INSIDER

February 12, 2009

Greetings From The Editor
Lynn Leahey

Dear Readers,
I can't believe it's been 20 years since Clint Radison kidnapped Kay on
Y&R, and replaced her with gum-snapping waitress Marge. Y&R is revisiting
that tale, with Michael Gregary back as shifty Clint, only this time when
Clint snatches Katherine, he thinks it's his old co-conspirator Marge.
That's Y&R for you -- telling classic soap stories with a twist, mining
history for tales that are familiar yet fresh. Read about the latest
calamity for Kay in your new Digest.... You'll also get the details on a
number of actor exits, starting with DAYS's departing Stephen Nichols and
Mary Beth Evans, and AMC's Eden Riegel. If you want to get to the bottom
of the story, reach for your new issue.

TALES FROM THE INTERVIEW

Stephanie Sloane: I had met Galen Gering (Rafe, DAYS) a few times over the
years when he was Luis on PASSIONS. I never really got a chance to have an
in-depth conversation with him until a recent phone interview for a
feature that will appear in our next issue. I found him to be super
intelligent and very funny. He had interesting stories from his childhood
and modeling days, but he shared the most hilarious tales from PASSIONS.
Here's one I couldn't fit in. "One of the craziest stories that I love to
tell is Josh [Ryan Evans, ex-Timmy] couldn't come into work a lot of
times, so they had these two dolls of him and one was porcelain and it was
a beautiful doll that they made to really resemble his likeness," he
recalled. "So when he would go from a live person into a doll, that's what
they would put in. Anyway, it got to the point where they were like, 'We
have to shoot something as though he's here because we are behind
schedule.' So the director came up with the brilliant idea to semi-animate
the doll with some fishing line and have him fly across the room. So it
was like 7:30 in the morning and I am coming into work and the director is
down on the ground, like you know how you make your fingers like the
camera sign? He's looking through the camera and the prop guys, they were
the nicest guys in the world, had the doll rigged up with fishing line and
one of them was going to pull the thing. Just to preface it, this doll is
like a $5,000 doll. They have one and that's it. So I come in and I'm
like, 'What are you guys doing?' All of a sudden, the director is like,
'5, 4,3, 2 -- action!' So the prop guy goes to pull the doll to get it to
move off of the chair and the string breaks. So he rigs it up again with
like triple the string and the director says action and the prop guy pulls
the string and it launches the thing so hard that it flies across the room
and smashes into a billion pieces. Then they couldn't shoot it at all and
they didn't have the doll. It was just crazy stuff like that all the
time." Read more about the actor -- who celebrates a birthday tomorrow! --
in the next issue of Digest.

Naomi Rabinowitz: When I chatted with Tammin Sursok (Colleen, Y&R) about
her Nickelodeon movie SPECTACULAR, the Australian actress revealed that
starring in the feature gave her a chance to experience American culture.
"It was fun getting a taste of what an American high school is like," she
laughs. "I don't know how accurate a portrayal it is, but I still had a
good time."

Sursok, who's also a singer, enjoyed the musical aspect of the movie, as
well. "I don't get to sing on Y&R so it was cool getting to do that here,"
she says. "Music has always been very important to me."

As for the movie itself she praises, "What I like about it is that while
it's about the singing and dancing, it's also about the characters. I
think it does a really good job of being entertaining and telling a story.
I'm proud of how it came out."

SPECTACULAR premiers February 16 on Nickelodeon.

Mara Levinsky: For this week's issue, I had the pleasure of speaking to
two of AMC's front-burning actresses, Tamara Braun (Reese) and Rebecca
Budig (Greenlee). It was bittersweet to chat with Rebecca, because our
interview actually took place while she was en route to film Greenlee's
swan song. Leaving the show was not an easy decision to make, she said,
and she was candid in volunteering that it was harder for her to say
good-bye this time around than when she left in 2005. Back then, she said,
she was burned out and fairly itching to go, but over the course of her
year-long comeback, she formed and renewed close ties to the people on the
show. She was, however, in great spirits, and she cracked me up multiple
times, especially when describing the torrid love triangle between her dog
and the pooches of co-star Eden Riegel (Bianca, AMC) and Greg Rikaart
(Kevin, Y&R), her next-door neighbor back in L.A. Read it and see if you
don't have the same reaction! My conversation with Tamara, meanwhile, was
also a treat. We grew up in the same town and her stepfather is a
long-time friend of my family's, but we never met before she joined AMC.
Her passion for the integrity of her storyline is truly inspiring, and
just as Rebecca noted that she has a deepened appreciation for her daytime
home, in speaking to Tamara it is obvious that her gratitude for getting
paid to do what she loves is genuine and abiding. It means a lot to Tamara
that she's part of a story that's making daytime history, and she shared
interesting info about much things have changed since the days that
Bianca's kiss with Lena made national news. I hope you enjoy getting to
spend a few pages with both of these remarkable ladies.

You gotta love soap fans' creativity -- Digest regularly receives doodads

Stephanie Sloane: In a funny twist, I called out sick yesterday for the
first time in over a decade. I returned to the office today to find a
fabulous arrangement of balloons with "Get Well Soon" on them. I couldn't
imagine who would really send those for a cold, until I read the card and
realized they were from Steve and Kayla fans K.M. from Indiana and M.W.
from Ohio, who explained that the powers-that-be at DAYS had "Destroying
Daysitis." I still might pretend they're for me. (Just kidding!) I also
received the most beautiful peach roses and chocolates, also for Steve and
Kayla. Thanks to everyone for keeping my office looking so cheerful!

Vera Hadzi-Antich: Cupid sent us here at Digest postcards, kisses and
banners to campaign for their favorite couples. The biggest fan campaign
this week came from the EJAMI fans -- an enormous, red banner that reads,
"Welcome back to Salem, Sami, it is not the same without you. Now kick
Nicole's butt! Get your man, your baby and your life back. EJAMI fans are
with you all the way!" The EJAMI fans also sent postcards claiming, "True
love stories never have endings." EJAMI fans did have some competition,
however, from the LUMI fans, who portrayed a similar message for their
favorite couple, Lucas and Sami, saying, "True love doesn't have a happy
ending. True love doesn't have an ending." EJ fans sent in a few postcards
pleading with the DAYS producers not to "lose this man." Steve and Kayla
fans (as you can see from the flowers and balloons they sent Stephanie!)
are heartbroken over the news that they will be written off the show.

Two of our longest-running campaigns -- GH's JASAM, and ATWT's Luke and
Noah -- are still at it! JASAM fans write, "JASAM are what we want for
Valentine's Day." Luke and Noah fans are still going with the "It's time
for more airtime, love passion and happiness" campaign.

AMC's Zach and Kendall fans sent in gold (they're really plastic) bangles
and a postcard that suggest, "No more rides on the romance merry-go-round
necessary! AMC has grabbed the brass ring with Zach and Kendall! Happy
Valentine's Day!" Reese and Bianca fans attached cute, little,
heart-covered bags filled with Hershey kisses "to celebrate all of the
kisses of Resse + Bianca! I never thought we would have sooo many."

ATWT's Paul Ryan fans sent in a few postcards claiming, "There's lots of
fish in the seaÖ but Roger's Paul Ryan is the only one for me! Sending
lotsa love for Paul. Happy Valentine's Day!" CARJACK fans are asking Carly
and Jack to be reunited in 2009 for Valentine's Day.

Thanks everyone! Happy Valentine's Day!

TYPE SET

I assume that you are being flooded at this point with emails regarding
the firing of DAYS's Stephen Nichols (Patch) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla).
I am yet another fan who came back to watching soap operas because of
their return and I will once again leave when they do. The firing of such
talented actors is unbelievable. With the economy the way it is, now is
the time to produce a quality product to watch, but instead the TPTB seem
to want to produce a teeny bop show that has no family values, no heart
and no soul. Additionally, firing the veteran actor because of their age
is so insulting. Once Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans are seen for the
last time, I will no longer watch DAYS. Angry in S. FL

IN PERSON

About a year and a half ago, my husband was a project manager on building
a backyard spa for Steve Burton and out of the blue, Steve asked my
husband if he knew of anyone who would want a yellow Labrador retriever.
He said they were just too busy with kids and his crazy appearance
schedule and his mother would only take one of their two dogs. So, my
husband called me from his house and tried to convince me that it would be
'good for us'. We had just lost our first baby at 61/2 months and were
very sad & the last thing I wanted to think about was dealing with a new
dog. However, Steve then sweetened the deal by offering to give us some
cash to cover any potential vet expenses, food &/or supplies. My husband
SWORE that he'd pick up after the dog and that everything would be ok. And
Sammi came to live with us that day.

Since then, she's been nothing but sheer joy -- a true gift from the
universe (and Steve Burton!). We now have a little girl, Taylor, and she
loves Sammi just as much as we do! She is the best dog ever! I have a
signed photo from Steve that says "Thanks for taking care of Sammi," and
I'd like to thank HIM for giving us a beautiful dog and wonderful
memories. I think it's pretty cool to have a "soap opera star's dog."

THE TOP 10 PLUS

1. When Ridge lunged for him, BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL's Rick hightailed it
out of the beach house so fast, it's amazing he didn't break the sound
barrier.

2. GENERAL HOSPITAL's Robin? Still a bad mom. Who pawns their sick
newborn off on their ditzy cousin and a thug?

3. AS THE WORLD TURNS' Carly — whose portrayer, Maura West, is
pregnant — has a taste for vodka, huh? Can anyone say, "maternity
leave = stint in rehab"?

4. GH's Jax kicking down the hospital doors was badass — but why did
he wait so long to do it?

5. Phyllis' new "kill 'em with kindness" act on YOUNG AND RESTLESS is
almost scarier than the stunts she pulled in her bad old days.

6. There's no need for ATWT's Vienna to sabotage condoms — just use
the Quartermaine brand from GH!

7. So much for being well-prepared, new parents. DAYS OF OUR LIVES' EJ
and Nicole asked Brady if he knew CPR when Sydney stopped breathing.

8. He's far from a bachelor, but GH's Sonny finding several of his
current and past love interests in one room was quite a memorable
moment. "Coming up...who gets the next rose?"

9. Un-health care: Dr. Sinclair has been abusing Annie physically and
keeping her drugged on ALL MY CHILDREN. With a doc like this, who
needs Kevorkian?!

10. Wonder how the Cramer women will react to Dorian's latest scheme,
one of her worst, on ONE LIFE TO LIVE?

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

From Senior Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto: Natalia Livingston (Rebecca)
told me that she kept plenty busy after leaving GENERAL HOSPITAL last
May. "I booked a movie in Nevada called Rough Hustle," Livingston
beams. "It has some of the main guys from Twilight, Matt Bushell and
Michael Welch. It's about Las Vegas casino life. There's a love story.
I played a Vegas lounge singer, and had to sing in front of 300 people
I didn't know in a casino. It was really fun. I booked another movie
opposite Jeremy Irons, but I wasn't able to do that, because I decided
to go back to GH instead." So take note, viewers: She gave up movies
for you!

WHY WE CLAPPED

It was hard enough for ALL MY CHILDREN's Reese to deal with her
mother's mere presence in Pine Valley, but when Reese got slapped like
a disobedient child, Tamara Braun took it like a lady and stood tall.
"I don't need you or your approval," Reese hissed. Braun's gestures
were adamant, even as her eyes hinted at her character's inner
confusion. The mixture of strength and vulnerability continued into
Reese's scene with Zach, in which the tough-talker could barely
control her tears. And we could not resist awarding her Applause,
Applause kudos for Issue 8.

LISTENING STATION

•Dar Williams' "It's Alright" played during Casey's 21st birthday
party on ATWT.

Are you a music aficionado? Can you recognize an obscure ditty at 0.5
measures? Listening Station would be0;happy to take contributions.
Feel free to e-mail the song, artist, show and date to
mala@..., along with your name so we can give you
proper credit for your mad musical skills.

NIGHTWATCH

•The 14th edition of CBS' THE AMAZING RACE gets under way on Sunday at
8 p.m., with host Phil Keoghan sending 11 teams on a 40,000-mile trek.
•The season finale of NBC's KNIGHT RIDER is scheduled to hit the
streets on Feb. 25 at 8 p.m.
•Fox Reality Channel brings back BATTLE OF THE BODS tomorrow at 10
p.m. In the unscripted competition, five women rank themselves in
order of physical beauty — but the twist is that they are trying to
mirror the rankings of male judges.

•From Managing Editor Gabrielle Winkel: Okay, I'm taking this
opportunity to toot a coworker's horn. Joe Diliberto, who covers prime
time, among many, many other things, is the only person I know who
gets LOST. I mean, the time-travel stuff doesn't confuse him as it
does me. He understands what it means when they say Desmond and
Faraday were each other's "constant." I kind of do, but couldn't
explain to you if my life depended on it. Sometimes we don't have time
to talk prime time during the day, so I decided to check out Joe's
blog at www.soapoperadigest.com/opinions/night-shift-blog. Prime time
fans out there — yes, you — I highly recommend you read it.

•From Senior Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto: You know how you can tell
these are the final episodes of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA? Because
the-powers-that-be are killing off characters left, right and center.
And these ain't newbies or peripheral characters whose absence (or
presence) will not be missed. The trend started when Lee's wife Dualla
unexpectedly blew her own brains out. Last week, longtime antagonist
Tom Zarek was executed. He was played by Richard Hatch, the original
Apollo from the first version of the series. Zarek's coup failed and
he got what was coming to him; indeed, what he sometimes seemed to
want. Co-conspirator Felix Gaeta was also executed in a display of
characters actually being punished appropriately. If BSG were a
daytime series, Zarek and Gaeta would have been sent to the local
prison for a couple of episodes before being released after some
ludicrous trial. In the wake of the disappointment over Earth proving
to be a useless, radioactive husk, the ragtag fleet is tearing itself
apart, and paranoia permeating the series is growing even more
intense. Check it out tonight at 10 on Sci Fi.

•From Editor Michael Karol: Wanted to give a shout-out to DESPERATE
HOUSEWIVES. This year's jump five years into the future has really
energized the show, and given each one of its primo stars a chance to
shine. My favorite episode so far: a one-shot about the death of the
neighborhood handyman (the fabulous and Emmy-worthy Beau Bridges),
with accompanying flashbacks featuring each of the residents of
Wisteria Lane remembering how he'd helped them through a tough period,
including the rarely seen Mary Alice (Brenda Strong). It was funny,
touching and profound. Brava, gals!

THE WE IN WEEKLY

•From West Coast Editor Janet Di Lauro: I was saddened by the passing
of ONE LIFE TO LIVE alumnus Phil Carey (ex-Asa). However, remembering
the feisty actor brought a smile to my face. Years ago, while
attending a big Soap Opera Digest Awards bash in Beverly Hills,
actors, press and the like were shuttled to the event via a van after
parking their cars in a designated lot. On the ride back to the lot
after the party, I had the privilege of riding with Carey, who kept
all the passengers in stitches. His impromptu assessment of the
festivities was a hoot. He commented on the show and poked fun at the
winners and losers, but was particularly enthralled with the
seat-fillers. "Did you see their outfits? They were dressed better
than some of the actors," he cracked. "Next year, I just want to sit
with them."

•From Managing Editor Gabrielle Winkel: What a sad few weeks for ONE
LIFE TO LIVE. Both Clint Ritchie (ex-Clint) and Phil Carey (ex-Asa)
are gone. My condolences to the cast and crew on West 66th Street.

I feel sort of bad segueing from such sadness to a comment on
hairstyles, but bear with me. I got such a kick out of Shane and Rex's
matching hairstyles, and was grateful to see that John had gotten a
haircut. I like the shorter hairdo on guys. Always have and probably
always will.

•From Copy Editor Marc Wilkofsky: Amid this week's wildness and drama
(Welcome back, Phillip!), GUIDING LIGHT's writers commendably added
touches of history. Daisy mentioned her time living with Beth (when
Beth was married to Daisy/Susan's adoptive dad, Jim, who died in a
fire). Then, Marina learned that her past with Danny (Remember the
sensitive mobster?) could cause major problems with her and Mallet's
hopes of adoption. Springfield: History happens here.
