Dear Readers,
I often join the chorus of complaints when a show kills off a
character for what appears to be a short-term shot of drama, but
sometimes losing a familiar face pays off. That promises to be the
case on B&B next week: In the new issue of Digest, Kyle Lowder talks
about the accident that kills Phoebe, and Rick's part in it. "This is
the saddest moment I've ever played in the eight years I've been in
daytime," says the star. And it's bound to have major ramifications —
check your new Digest for details.... We talked to Tony Geary about
whether he'll re-up as GH's Luke (no word yet), and he reflected on
the possibility of a Luke and Laura reunion. Knowing how fond Geary
is of Genie Francis you might think he'd jump at the chance for
another chapter in the grand Luke-and-Laura love affair, but there's
a more "interesting" way he'd like to see them move forward. It's all
in the new Digest.... And so are updates on what's going on behind
the scenes at DAYS, including the debut on the show of an old AW
fave. Don't miss the latest news!
Stephanie Sloane: I recently conducted an interview with DAYS
newcomer Eric Martsolf (Brady; ex-Ethan, PASSIONS) over the phone.
Some actors are better in person, but Martsolf was quite the
conversationalist; he is bright, funny and a pleasure to talk to. He
weighed in on everything, from the cancellation of PASSIONS, that
nearly made him reconsider his decision not to become a lawyer, to
his twin boys, Chase and Mason (and how JOHN & KATE PLUS 8 is his and
wife, Lisa's favorite show) to Ethan vs. Brady. "No disrespect to the
character of Ethan Winthrop but I always had an issue with his
indecisiveness," he says. "The women really ran the show on PASSIONS.
Guys were such wallflowers. On this show, there is equal ground and
Brady is coming in guns blazing. He's really matured since he has
been gone. They made that really clear to me when they offered me the
job. He's been through rehab and he's had a lot of life happen to
him." He was also overwhelmed by his predecessor, Kyle Lowder (Rick,
B&B; ex-Brady), lauding his hire in Digest. "When a guy like that
does a classy move and promotes another guy taking over your
character, it's worth praising. I think that shows a lot about his
character and I think it all stems from our mutual love of Bon Jovi."
For more on Martsolf, check out the new issue of Digest.
Lauren Flynn: I'll be honest, I knew very little about Florencia
Lozano (Téa, OLTL) and her work when I sat down with her for a
feature interview in this week's issue. There was a time when
I "broke up" with OLTL and decided I only had room for one fictional
drama in my life and that was GENERAL HOSPITAL (a decision I'd
probably rethink today). Unfortunately, that was when Lozano came on
as Téa, yet I've always heard positive things about what she did with
that character (making Todd sizzle with someone other than Blair?
Come on!). Our photo assistant, Bryan Beckley, for one is often
praising Lozano's efforts. Well, I soon learned that sitting down
with someone I know very little about is actually one of the best
ways to go about an interview. I was cognizant of the serene vibe she
gives off, her fluid hand movements, her slightly gravelly voice and
how incredibly young she looks. One of the first things I said to her
is, "Now I know why you're not still playing Blair's mom on GOSSIP
GIRL! You look way too young for the part," and she laughed and
said, "That's what they said!" Another daytime alum, Margaret Colin
(ex-Margo, ATWT), was recast as Eleanor Waldorf after the pilot.
Lucky for OLTL, because it got Lozano back at a time when she is
definitely needed. In the meantime, the actress has been a busy lady,
from starring in an upcoming indie flick with heavyweights Harvey
Keitel and John Leguizamo to acting in a theater troupe with
Elizabeth Rodriguez (Carmen, AMC) and UGLY BETTY's Ana Ortiz (Hilda).
Find out more on what she's been up to in "Now And Zen", starting on
page 62.
Devin Owens: In my interview with Y&R's Michael Gross (River), you'll
learn he is far from the dad he played on FAMILY TIES. Still, he has
fond memories of the sitcom and is still in close contact with his TV
wife Meredith Baxter. "We stay in touch on the phone although it's
been a while since we've seen each other," Gross reveals. "Even when
we were doing FAMILY TIES, Meredith was very preoccupied with her
family. She had five kids. One of the jokes we had is that I could
hardly get her out of Santa Monica where she lives. I lived in the
Pasadena area and I always had to go over there or meet her somewhere
halfway. I think she came to my house once in the seven years of
FAMILY TIES. She is a very hands-on mother and she took it seriously.
I love still talking to her."
You gotta love soap fans' creativity — Digest regularly receives
doodads and goodies from readers who know how to make a statement.
Elaine G. Flores: Fans totally got into the holiday spirit this week
with Thanksgiving and seasonal themes.
• ATWT's Luke and Noah supporters sent postcards to say: "Fans thank
AS THE WORLD TURNS for giving Luke & Noah the election storyline with
lots of airtime and great drama. More, please!" There was also a
Happy Thanksgiving card featuring autumn leaves, pumpkins and the
sentiment: "Thank You For Keeping The World Turning!"
• DAYS's Dan and Chelsea fans also sent an assortment of cards with
messages like, "Thanks for Danesa Chemistry!" One creative fan,
Haydie from Kearny, NJ, made a cute, colorful turkey. His plumage was
decorated with the words, "Sexy Love" and a shot of Daniel and
Chelsea smooching.
• Fans of GH's Jason and Elizabeth kept the seasonal vibe going by
sending yummy scented spice and vanilla candles a selection of
flavored teas and coffees because, "Jason Needs Sugar and Spice,"
which as it turns out is, "What Elizabeth is Made of." The heroine is
also made of (love, compassion, passion, excitement, loyalty, home,
family, caring, marriage, children, adventure, spunk, action, daring,
intrigue and danger.) Well, I'm glad nobody is made of snips and
snails and puppy dog tails because that would not be a fun campaign.
• Now, some Jason and Sam enthusiasts took their inspiration from
iconic big-screen and TV duos. Jason and Sam's faces graced a
miniature Casablanca poster, The Morgan Identity postcard and my
personal favorite a shot of MORGAN TO McCALL, (Think you guys can
borrow David Vickers from OLTL to play Freeway?)
• We also heard from a few fans of DAYS's EJ and Samantha who
declare, "We Accept No Substitutes!".... Second Chances The Lumi Mega-
Site voted DAYS's Lucas, Sexiest Man In Salem" and "The Only Man Sami
Brady Will Ever Truly Love!".... AMC's "Zendall" contingent is coping
with Kendall's coma by sending cards that picture her sleeping, Zach
reading Sleeping Beauty to the kids and delivering a kiss that will
hopefully rouse Kendall. The cards and flier bear the message: "And
from this slumber you shall wake when true love's kiss the spell
shall break..." .... There was also a pretty card with a photo of
Rebecca Budig and a plea for AMC to reunite Aidan and Greenlee; a
reminder that "The Beautiful Chemistry of Maurice [Benard, Sonny] and
Natalia [Livingston, ex-Emily] is what GH needs."; a call to Reunite
ATWT's Carjack and a couple of cards from www.therhfactor.net in
praise of Roger Howarth (Paul, ATWT), who is "the Right Man for 'The
World' "
Beauty tips from the stars.
GH's Lisa LoCicero (Olivia)
What's your recipe for a bad hair day?
"Any day that I'm not working, I only wear my hair in a bun. To catch
me with my hair down is like sighting Bigfoot. It doesn't happen.
I've gotten fancy pencils now. I take one of those, roll it around,
put it up and there it is."
Soap fans are a vocal bunch — see what fellow viewers are saying
about their shows.
I am so happy that Grant Aleksander [Phillip] is coming back to GL.
Heaven knows Lizzie needs her daddy! I only hope that they are
bringing him back SANE! The whole mental illness thing fell flat when
Rick faked Phillip's death to get him out of town for the sake of
Jude and Zack.
T.P., Roseburg, OR
IN PERSON
I had the EXTREME pleasure of seeing Rick Springfield (Noah, GH) in
concert at the Mid-South Fair recently. He was on stage for a full
hour and a half, taking time out to step off the stage to engage the
audience. We were behind the VIP fence, so didn't expect to get to
see him up close let alone interact with him. However, he stood on
the chairs in the last row of the VIP section at one point and I was
one of the lucky few to get to hold his hand. He held on to me for
about 20 seconds rather than just giving my hand a [quick squeeze].
To make things even more interesting, the young woman next to me
pointed out a woman who was with [her] and told me she had dated Doug
Davidson (Paul, Y&R) in 1983. Since Doug and Rick are friends, this
woman had spent the summer around the pool with the two of them and
had pictures to prove it. The experience was the highlight of my
fall. What a sweetheart!
Amy Coolidge, Whiteville, TN
On October 16, I was at a benefit in West Hollywood to raise money
for the AIDS Walk and Cops 4 Causes. There were about 25 soap stars
there.... I will attach a few of the pics I took that night....Being
a huge fan of soaps for over 20 years, it was a night I will never
forget. I want to personally say that Carolyn Hennesy (Diane, GH),
Dylan Bruce (ex-Chris, ATWT), Cynthia Preston (ex-Faith, GH), Adam
Grimes (ex-Kyle, GH: NIGHT SHIFT) and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli,
GH), deserve a shout-out for their willingness to spend time with the
fans.
Robert Wofford, West Hollywood, CA
Fan Molly Bruch with Shawn Christian (Daniel, DAYS, top l.), Nadia
Bjorlin (Chloe, DAYS) and AMC's Cameron Mathison (Ryan).
I went to The Calgary Woman's Show this past weekend and on the first
day, met Cameron Mathison (Ryan, AMC). He was so gracious to
everyone, and even stood up and danced with one of the fans right in
front of me! While signing autographs, he took his time to speak to
every fan, take pictures, and sign two things for everyone. On the
second day, I was lucky enough to meet Shawn Christian and Nadia
Bjorlin (Daniel and Chloe) from my fave show, DAYS. They were
hilarious, and Shawn was especially very funny about his current
grandaughter/grandmother storyline. Both stars were so kind, and
happy to be there. I was very star-struck, but talking to them and
joking around with them during the interview from the front row,
really calmed my nerves. They also took the time to interact with
their fans, and made sure everyone got a picture with them. Best
weekend ever!
Molly Bruch, Calgary, Canada
I was in Ojai, CA for a meeting September 25th through the 28th.
While there I heard a rumor that Tyler Christopher (Nikolas, GH) was
getting married at the same hotel. Although I couldn't see the
wedding, on Sunday I met Rick Hearst (Ric). He was so incredibly
charming. As he moved up in line to check out we kept talking. When I
left to go back to my room, I met Tyler and his bride going to the
lobby. I congratulated them both and they stopped to talk to me. They
were both very sweet and it was a pleasure meeting them. They were
very down-to-earth and I appreciated that.

Answers to your burning questions.
Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) in the 1987 film Evil Dead II.
Q. Is that Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) in the movie Evil Dead II?
N.K., via the Internet
A. Absolutely. That was DePaiva's first film. "It was totally hands-
on," she revealed to Digest in 2007, saying that she'd often get
called to the set to move or hold props while they were shooting in
Wadesboro, NC. "It really helped me get over my fear of horror films
because I could see how fake everything was. Who knew that it would
end up being such a cult classic?"

1. St. Luke may be gone forever on AS THE WORLD TURNS, but the
troubled young man's cracked halo has proven to be a whole lot more
interesting!
2. Kudos to ONE LIFE TO LIVE for not throwing away the character of
Brody; it's nice to have a tortured hero other than John in Llanview!
3. GUIDING LIGHT actually integrated a vegetable juice into the
storyline via dialogue. Does that mean the advertiser paid more, or
the writers ran out of ideas?
4. Speaking of ideas, it's a bad one to use actors like Kurt McKinney
(Matt) and Liz Keifer (Blake) to push the advertisers. The vegetable
juice scene is the only screen time the actors had in the GL episode.
5. After what happened in New York, it's hard to accept GENERAL
HOSPITAL's Lulu encouraging Johnny to teach piano again.
6. Here's an idea, OLTL people: Why not match Marty with Bo? She
could use a nice, stable, sane, not weird beau.
7. It's good to know ALL MY CHILDREN's Bianca doesn't let her
troubles keep her down. One minute she's confiding in Reese about how
upset she is, and the next she's taking part in a dance party!
8. Isn't it a tragic mistake for THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Ashley
to leave her job in L.A. to be Victor's rebound girl? It hasn't been
that long since Sabrina's death.
9. Isn't some kind of ethical code being violated having a
psychiatrist — namely, DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Marlena — blackmailing John
into getting therapy?
10. Who knew THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Rick would be such an
entertaining baddie?
11. Only Y&R's Jack could be so calm and cool while being
interrogated by the Feds.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
From News Editor Mala Bhattacharjee: I recently had an opportunity to
be part of a call for the NBC police procedural series, LIFE, and I
got to ask star Damian Lewis if he really enjoys eating all that
fruit that quirky detective Charlie Crews consumes every week. "I've
eaten some pretty exotic fruit in the last year," admitted the
actor. "The staple — you know, apples, bananas and oranges — has been
left behind for African-horned Melon and strange pears, and kumquats
and passion fruits, and papaya and guavas, and all sort of fun
things."
Though Lewis confided that he's no papaya fan — it's his "least
favorite fruit" — he did assure that he loves fruits in general, "and
I eat fruit when I'm just between takes. I go to Craft Services and I
eat more fruit. So it's lucky, you know."
Especially for his vitamin and antioxidant intake!
WHY WE CLAPPED
ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Kristen Alderson is, like her character, barely
more than a child herself, but she gave a mature performance when
Starr delivered her baby. Alderson plastered a look of raw wonder on
Starr's face as she realized she had accomplished giving birth. But
that was replaced by sheer horror when Starr learned her child had
died. Alderson's agony was so moving that we had no choice but to
reward her with Applause, Applause kudos in Issue 50.
NIGHTWATCH
—Patrick Ecclesine/The CW
•From Senior Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto: Thanksgiving is a time for
family, and one of my favorite prime-time family members is Jessica
Walter's deliciously decadent granny, Tabitha, on 90210. In addition
to dispensing the expected hard-won advice about life, Tabby is
always dishing up a story about her adventures in old Hollywood — and
pouring herself a drink. But while Tabitha is unique among prime-time
characters this season, she does bring to mind Walter's previous
regular role, the oblivious Lucille Blum on the late, lamented
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. Does Walter herself see any similarities? "I
think every character that an actor plays, you put a lot of yourself
into it," Walter smiles. "The difference between Lucille and Tabitha
is, first of all, Lucille liked vodka and Tabitha likes scotch
(laughs). The reason that Harry and Debbie and the family have come
to Tabitha's Beverly Hills mansion is to take care of her because she
has been drinking, but now she's now on the wagon. That'ssomething
Lucille never really tried." 90210 airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
THE WE IN WEEKLY
•From News Editor Mala Bhattacharjee: I almost nominated GH's Braden
Walkes(Cameron) for Applause, Applause this week, as Cam and Jake
(and, oh, Sam and Elizabeth, too) faced an onslaught from the
Russians, except that I know we don't give out those accolades solely
on the basis of how precious and adorable someone is. Little Braden's
timing couldn't have been better as he tried to hold back the cutie-
pie who plays Jake (even cuter now that he has hair!) and cried, "No,
no, no!" at the younger child. What a charmer! I had the luck of
seeing him in person at the recent ABC Super Soap Weekend and can
testify that he's just as adorable in person as he is onscreen. I
think he's easily my favorite child actor, next to ONE TREE HILL's
Jackson Brundage (Jamie).
•From Senior Editor Gabrielle Winkel: There's nothing like talking to
a returning actress. They are always so grateful and happy to be back
on their soaps. I've never, ever heard one say, "It's lousy to be
back. Everyone is horrible." Of course, would they actually say that
to the press? Doubtful. That said, recently I had a lovely chat with
Florencia Lozano, who is about to return to OLTL as Tea. Now, to be
honest, I never really watched her when she was on back in the
proverbial day. So I was never privy to that TNT (Todd and Tea)
magic. But I believe the stories I've heard. Lozano is thrilled to be
back in Llanview and very eager to reclaim the role of Tea. As she
told me (the interview will run in the Dec. 16 issue of WEEKLY), Tea
is back in town for a number of reasons, including her past history
with Todd. Now, if anyone in town needs a friend, it's Todd. Cuz he's
got none at the moment.
•From Editorial Assistant Julie Globus: Watching the AMC scenes with
Ryan, Annie and Greenlee unfold in the penthouse on Monday, I found
myself thinking that Ryan and Greenlee aren't much better than Annie
in terms of thinking of Emma's safety. Ryan berated Annie for
jeopardizing Emma's safety, but then handed Greenlee a gun to keep
Annie in the apartment. Meanwhile, Emma was just in another room.
Shouldn't everyone's first instinct have been to keep the gun as far
away from Emma as possible?
•From Editorial Assistant Meridith M. Miller: I am thrilled about all
of the fantastic people on their way back to GL. During the show's
fan club weekend in September, I got the chance to interview Jeff
Branson about joining the cast as Shayne. He's such a nice guy, and I
loved that he was already pumped about playing Shayne and he hadn't
even begun filming yet. A few weeks later, I was on the phone with
Grant Aleksander for the first time about his shocking return as
Phillip. Like other GL fans, I couldn't believe it was actually
happening. Phillip's return is the most talked-about buzz on GL
message boards, so I was glad to have the opportunity to pick
Aleksander's brain. This week was particularly exciting for me,
because I learned that David Andrew Macdonald would be returning to
GL as Edmund! Macdonald is one of my favorites, and Edmund is a treat
to watch, so his return has me smiling from ear to ear. I can't wait
to get the scoop from him, but in the meantime, I'm applauding GL for
what appears to be a comeback. After a year of mixed reviews over the
show's new format and other changes, I'm glad that things are looking
up!
