Y&R Actor/Actress Tells All
Just how did the cast feel about YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS'S former
executive producer/head writer Lynn Latham? In an exclusive interview,
an anonymous actor/actress tells Carolyn Hinsey in Carolyn's Corner,
what really happened behind the scenes. "She didn't understand the
character of Ashley. She wanted her out. So, Ashley was out," the
interviewee revealed. For more, so much more, pick up the March 18
issue of Soap Opera Weekly.

Y&R at 35: 1,000 reasons to celebrate
As YOUNG AND RESTLESS' 35th anniversary approaches on March 26, the
show marks another milestone with a record 1,000 consecutive weeks as
the highest-rated daytime drama. The soap first hit the Number One in
the Nielsens in December 1988, and has remained on top in households
for the 1,000th week in a row as of the Feb 25-29 airweek.

Goldin Is AMC's New Jake!
Ricky Paull Goldin, who is leaving GL after a seven-year run, won't be
on the unemployment line for long: AMC has confirmed that he is headed
to Pine Valley as the new Jake Martin! Jake, last played by J. Eddie
Peck from 2000-03, will be back on-screen by April, says a show rep.
For the Jake uninitiated: The character is Tad's brother, a doctor,
and has a romantic past with Greenlee.

ATWT's Martha Byrne Out
Two-time Emmy winner Martha Byrne, who has played signature ATWT
heroine Lily on and off since 1985, is leaving the show after contract
negotiations broke down. "We have made Martha an incredibly generous
offer in hopes that she would remain a valuable member of the AS THE
WORLD TURNS cast. Unfortunately, Martha has decided to leave, despite
our best efforts to keep her," said a spokesperson in a statement.
"Unfortunately, what I thought to be a reasonable and workable
request, the show determined [to be] unworkable," responded Byrne, in
part of a detailed statement explaining her reluctant decision to
leave that will appear in the 3/18 issue of Digest. Byrne, whose last
air date has not been released, will be holding a live chat for fans
at her own Web site, www.marthabyrne.net on March 16. Fans have
already created a Web site petitioning for Byrne to stay. Go to
www.freewebs.com/keepmarthabyrne for more.

Restless Again?
In other news, Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla, Y&R) may return to Genoa
City. "I'm open to coming back," she shares. Find out what else she
says about it in the new issue of Digest.

Y&R Fave Returns
Michael Damian — who's played Danny Romalotti on and off since 1980 —
is slated to return to Genoa City. What will that mean for his son
Daniel and ex-Phyllis?

Ameera? At the same time, Gwen summons all her strength and returns
Hallie to Sofie, but not before she minces words with Will who is
against giving the child back. Will this cause a major rift in their
relationship?

kind of drug or alcohol while with a patient. The nurse that is
working with him can't help but notice and the nurse tells Susan. Why
would Chris be drinking or drugging on the job? More importantly, how
will Susan deal with the situation? Could Chris be at risk of losing

Oh yes, it's a tangled web she weaves. This week, Pam reveals her true
colors -- and intentions -- to Donna. What spurs Pam on to come clean?
More importantly, how will Donna deal with what she finds out?
Whatever route she chooses, rest assured that Pam will not delight in
it. In fact, before the week is out, Donna best beware. She is going
to have Pam to contend with as Pam plots her vengeance on Donna.
However, Donna may be oblivious to Pam's machinations as she has
other, more romantic things on her mind – like her wedding. She and
Eric discuss the plans for their nuptials.

But wait! How can Eric be still thinking of marrying Donna when he is
front at center at an anniversary party for him and Stephanie? The
tangled web gets even more tangled as Felicia makes an impassioned
plea during the festivities. What does she beg for? Will her wish come
true?

While on the other side of the city, there could be fur flying as
Ashley and Brooke face off over Ridge. Will it escalate to an all out
cat fight? Shortly thereafter, Bridget gets an earful as she eaves
drops on a heated conversation between Nick and Brooke. What are they
discussing? More importantly, why are their voices raised?

Speaking of Nick, it's not long before he sees Katie in a new light.
What has Katie done this time to turn his head? Find out when you tune

Bill gets an earful from Billy regarding Lizzie's choices. It appears
that thanks to a deal Lizzie made with Alan, she has given up her
independent life. We're not quite sure what that means exactly, but
what we do know is that in making this major sacrifice, Lizzie also
must give up Bill. Is Bill gonna take that lying down?

While on the other side of town, Olivia is out sowing a few wild oats.
It's not long before she finds herself being entertained by two rather
shady guys. Is she in harms way? Will Gus find her with them? If so,
how will he behave? We are not one hundred percent certain, but we do
know this. Gus will get devastating news about Olivia's health.

At the same time, Mallet continues to be concerned for Dinah. This
week, although he offers his help, Dinah is adamant that she get
better on her own. Is she making the correct choice?

While in other couples developments, Cassie catches Josh and Reva in a
compromising situation. Is what she sees what is actually happening,
or are Josh and Reva together for an entirely different reason, one
that has nothing to do with cheating on Cassie? Finally, the week
winds down as Cyrus steps up and does the right thing. He comes clean
to Marina. How will she react now that she knows he is really in love
with Harley? Find out when you tune in to Guiding Light this week!

kick in as he digs up dirt on David. What – if anything – does he
uncover? More importantly, will David be able to talk his way out of
whaterver Brad discovers?

In the meantime, Amber's deviousness is finally exposed. Does it

HOT PREVIEW

Carly Shoots Kit Dead!!!!!

"The carnage in the wake of Kit Fowler is monumental," sets up Michael
Park about this week's events, which take place at the Chicago scenery
shop where that infamous dummy-about-town, Cowboy Jack, was
constructed. Henry is brought there by Matt (on Gray's orders), and
Katie, Brad, Jack and Carly also head to the shop. After
pistol-whipping Katie, Kit is cornered. "He's got Kit trained in his
sights and Katie, who's all beaten-up, stumbles around the corner,
Jack turns for a millisecond - for a millisecond, he's distracted -
and gets shot," groans Park. "Carly takes Jack's gun and Kit shoots at
her. She shoots back and hits her, Fatally."

Kit dies without confessing, so Parker's future still looks bleak.
Brad and Katie make an on-air plea for information regarding Kit; Brad
then urges Katie to go after his brother. Will Jack and Katie get a
second chance? "Katie's perky and funny and cute, and Carly's hot and
sexy and the mother of his child," says Park. "So that conflict is
always going to be in the air. Who knows how it's going to end up?"

***************

Dark Days

The Snyders rally to protect Ameera from an uncertain future on
Wednesday, March 12. "It mostly has to do with the kids, but Lily and
Holden are involved in that story," says Martha Bryne of the Snyder
Farm's newest resident. "Everybody stays there! I think we counted 16
people last time." On Friday, March 14, Sofie receives an unwelcome
visitor..Brad and Bonnie's fun night ends in tragedy on Tuesday, March 18.

*The door opens once again for Katie and Jack.
*Vienna and Henry reunite, unaware of the danger around them.
*Carly gets a new lead.

As The World Turns, Global/CBS — Noah marries Ameera!

Hell, to the no: The Muslim world isn't going to like this one bit: as
I predicted, this coming week, Noah marries Ameera so she can secure a
green card. And to make matters worse, Lily lends Ameera a dress so
she can wed her son's beau (that sound you hear is Luke screaming
bloody murder). With the Nuke controversy heating up this week
(ironically during the 15th year anniversary of its late, great head
writer Douglas Marland's death) over their lack of affection, it's
safe to say this plot twist is pretty much bad timing. Check out my
inside story on the brouhaha for Out.com. And speaking of Nuke, Van
Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) will be presenters at the
19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on March 17. I'll be
there covering the event for various publications, and I'll bring you
all the gay soap scoop here. And if you have time, head to my main
soap page to vote in this week's Nuke poll.

Ironically, as Nuke is forced back into the closet, I've noticed how
gay ATWT has become. The hottest gay couple is Matt and Casey.
Newcomer Eric William Morris is a major acting find — and he can act
circles around most of the cast as the shady former convict, Matt
O'Conner. Add Paul's shirtless scenes (nice body, Roger Howarth — very
impressed), and Vienna, and it would appear that ATWT is actually
giving its gay fans some camp and subtext to make up for censoring Nuke.

After I broke Martha Byrne's (Lily) departure last week, a lot has
happened. For starters, the soap is actively recasting the part (I
hear OLTL's Emmy winner Susan Haskell is at the top of the list; let's
just hope she doesn't call Luke, Billy Douglas) after confirming the
two-time Emmy winner has left the role.

Look for Chris Heuisler (Cole) to return to the show on March 14 when
his character pops back in to Oakdale to help save his bio-daughter's
life. Another baby storyline, can't wait.

Scoops on 'World Turns'
This week, breaking news on ATWT's plans for the Luke and Noah love story

By Abby West

ATWT: Kissing Games
After percolating on message boards for weeks, fan discontent over the
lack of a kiss between As the World Turns' Luke and Noah during the
show's Valentine's Day episode exploded this past week. In addition to
mainstream news articles about it, an online petition implored the
powers-that-be to treat the gay couple ''in same manner as any other
love story involving any other teen characters.'' During the V-Day
episode, they were the only couple not to smooch during a kissing
montage, and many speculated that not only was the show fearful of
moving forward with a gay storyline, but that the introduction of a
new female character would mean the couple's eminent breakup.

But fans shouldn't worry, says one show insider. Noah won't be
switching teams and becoming romantically involved with the
recently-emigrated Iraqi girl, Ameera, anytime soon. He and Luke will
remain a united front, though one rumor, involving a
deportation-avoiding marriage between Ameera and Noah, actually is
true. Their nups are being written as a standard soap opera tactic of
constantly-impeded-love, however, and there's no master plan to
actually break up Noah and Luke, says the insider. For their part,
both the show's home network, CBS, and it's producer, Procter & Gamble
Productions Inc., have pledged support for the couple's continued
storyline and insist there's no censoring going on. ''We've purposely
told Luke and Noah's story slowly to bring our viewers along with us
and engage them — which we've clearly done,'' says P&G's statement. It
continued, ''We make decisions on how to tell our stories based on
what we think is best creatively and for our diverse audience.''

TV Guide magazine is reporting that Jerry Douglas (John) is returning
for a short in another role. He will play an actor named Alistar who
is a look alike for John that Jack and Sharon find on a casting site.
They use this Alistar in their plot against Gloria.

I am all for a good gaslighting. Glo is halfway crazy on a good day. I
will have my fingers crossed that it works!

This we'll call a spumor until confirmed but looks real.

Apparently, Tammy Lauren who plays Detective Maggie Sullivan on the
show has stated that she won't be returning to the show. I wouldn't
take this as a sure thing yet as it's only a post relaying the
information, it hasn't been confirmed otherwise by the show.

Below is the post with the info:
=============================

OK. I'll be honest, I hate writing this post.
I have opted not to return to Y+R. Let me explain.
As the strike ended, work offers have begun to come in for me and with
no storyline plans for the near future, it seemed very foolish to pass
on other work in return for the occasional date on Y+R. Daytime work
pays so much less than prime time work/film for me and I've turned
down quite a bit of work over the past year when it conflicted with my
schedule at Y+R. Why was simple - it is quite something in show
business to work in an atmosphere with people who have been working
together for decades. The feeling of family is very strong, versus a
prime time show that is lucky to last 5 seasons. Also, I feel enormous
loyalty to Lynn and Doug. Now, Lynn is gone and while I'm still loyal
to Doug, he is a daytime star that needs no help from me. I felt
strongly it was time to exit while I still had great memories. I made
this decision in early Feb. I have avoided coming to this board to let
you all know because I didn't want to let down anyone that has been
following my character on Y+R. I'm sorry, I will miss you all and hope
the new team delivers a great Paul story for you soon.

Not their kind of town on 'As the World Turns'
By CAROLYN HINSEY
Saturday, March 8th 2008, 4:00 AM

Jack, Carly, Brad, Katie and Henry converge in Chicago this week on
"As the World Turns," culminating in Henry's being freed and Jack
getting shot.

"Brad and Katie go to this warehouse looking for Henry," says Austin
Peck, who plays Brad. "Jack and Carly are there looking for Kit, so
they all work together."

Kit is wanted back in Oakdale, where teenager Parker is on trial for
murder.

"Kit is the key to keeping Parker from being sent to prison for
killing Sam. fired one shot that hit Sam, but Kit fired the second
shot that killed him," reveals Peck.

As for Henry, "Gray wants Vienna, so he tried to get Henry out of the
picture by kidnapping him. As it happens, Kit and Henry are both in
the same warehouse in Chicago. Kit, for some reason, has Cowboy Jack
with her. She tries to kill Carly and Jack by dropping Cowboy Jack on
them."

She can't throw her voice, much less the doll. An escape attempt ensues.

"Right when Kit's going to get away, Brad stops her. But she's got a gun."

Enter Brad's brother, Jack.

"Jack is a seasoned police officer, with a gun on a woman who has
already killed one person and attacked other people. She's obviously
dangerous and holds life to be very cheap. But he still takes his eyes
off person who has a gun, not only on him, but on Carly. He gets
distracted - and then he gets shot."

Jack falls to the ground; Carly picks up his gun and shoots Kit, and
then accom-panies the stricken Jack to an ambulance. So, it's up to
Brad and Katie to res-cue Henry and reunite him with Vienna."

Brad trying to get Henry and Vienna back together is really about
being with Katie," says Peck. "Falling in love with Katie is something
Brad is really ready for in his life. He sees the relationship Henry
and Vienna have and he is going to fi ght to have it himself. If they
can be together, Brad and Katie can definitely be together."

One problem: Katie is still carrying a torch for Brad's brother, Jack,
so she may be slightly distracted afterhe's wheeled off to the hospital.

"Brad and Katie laugh, challenge each other, and bust each other's
b.... If she was with Jack, they'd bore each other to death," scoffs
Peck. "Assuming he makes it."

'Restless' wins for 1,000th week
« Thread Started on Mar 7, 2008, 8:17am »
After 35 years, CBS soap still 'Young' and hot

There aren't many ratings streaks in the biz like that of "The Young
and the Restless," the CBS daytime drama that has been on top since
the final weeks of the Reagan administration.

The soaps genre as a whole has been hit by declining ratings over the
years, but "Y&R" remains its bellwether program. Sony sudser, which
celebrates its 35th year on the air later this month, just achieved a
major milestone by winning the ratings race in households for an
amazing 1,000th consecutive week.

Nielsen data for the week of Feb. 25-29 shows that "Young and the
Restless" averaged a 4.2 household rating/18 share, translating to
5.79 million viewers -- a bigger aud in the frame than primetime shows
including "According to Jim" and "Lipstick Jungle."

And for the season, the show's average aud of 5.78 million towers over
the daytime drama pack. Its CBS skedmate "Bold and the Beautiful" runs
second (3.98 million), followed by the Eye's "As the World Turns"
(3.18 million) and ABC's "General Hospital" (3.16 million).

"Y&R" also leads all daytime dramas in the key demos of women 18-49
(1.9/12) and women 25-54 (2.6/15).

Set in the Midwestern town of Genoa City, Wis., "The Young and the
Restless" preemed as a half-hour skein in 1973, but was extended to an
hour in 1980. Show first hit No. 1 in the ratings in December 1988.

The late William J. Bell and his wife, Lee Phillip Bell, co-created
the series. Josh Griffith is the current exec producer and head
writer, and Steve Kent oversees production for Sony Pictures Television.

"Reaching the milestones of 1,000 weeks at No. 1 and 35 years on the
air simultaneously is unheard of in this industry," Barbara Bloom,
senior VP of daytime programs, CBS, said in a statement. "Our
congratulations go out to the Bell family, to Sony and to the entire
cast and crew on these remarkable achievements."

"Y&R" will celebrate its 35th anniversary on the air March 26. Michael
Damian, who played Danny Romalotti from 1981-1990, 1993-1998 and
2002-04, returns for several episodes, and Eileen Davidson, whose
character of Ashley Abbott moved from "Y&R" to "Bold and the
Beautiful," will also be back.

To The Victor Go The Spoils
« Thread Started on Mar 5, 2008, 10:06am »
From the April 2008 issue of CBS Watch (pp. 52-54):

The man, the myth, and the mustache... a revealing portrait of Y&R's
Eric Braeden

Having just turned a hard-to-believe 66, he isn't what one would call
young. But actor Eric Braeden surely has the restless thing down pat.
"I'm never one to rest on my laurels," he says. "I've never been happy
just sitting still."

No kidding. During a rare interview in the inner sanctum that is his
sparse Y&R dressing room, Eric Braeden has one eye on the TV flashing
the day's stock prices while fielding a series of calls from the
casting director of a movie he is starring in and executive producing.
All the while, Braeden is also making notes on his Y&R script.

And, still, despite the noise, the distractions and the hundred
different things going through his mind, the daytime Emmy-winning
Braeden is somehow able to focus. He's always been a
thought-provoking, intense and incredibly candid interview, and this
particular moment--distractions included--is no exception.

As the Years Go By
It's that kind of intensity and attention to detail that has made him
the leading man on the leading soap for 27 years. But to hear him tell
it, not only is Braeden not feeling cocky about his standing as soap's
top guy, but also he isn't terribly comfortable thinking of himself
that way.

"Any actor who walks around feeling secure is a stupid actor," he
says. "Especially in daytime. New producers or writers come in and
they might not like your character. No matter how popular you are, or
think you are, 'Victor dies' is a possibility... 'Victor leaves town'
is always a possibility. You don't become an actor for security. I can
always leave in a moment's notice if I have to. I can be told 'We want
you to leave.' It's one reason I don't decorate [my dressing room]."

Although Braeden isn't terribly preoccupied with his surroundings, he
does acknowledge (after a little gentle prodding) that, like a fine
wine, he is actually better looking now than when he started on the
soap nearly three decades ago. At 66? Really? "You can put that I just
turned 45," he laughs heartily.

He concedes that when he started years ago he looked a little too lean
and mean. "I was working out way too much then," he says. "I was
playing soccer and boxing. Two of the most physically grueling things
one can do--and I was doing both at the same time. That tore me down.
I still work out (twice a day, for the record) but nothing that's so
hard on my cardiovascular system. I've allowed my face to fill out a
little more."

Almost on cue, he reaches for a small piece of chocolate to chase a
sticky bun he's taken down in a couple of bites. "And I allow myself
the occasional treat."

From Daytime to Silver Screen
Braeden keeps a busy schedule. To provide five weeks off to star in
and executive produce the movie The Man Who Came Back, Y&R doubled-up
his schedule for a couple of weeks with pretapes so that the audience
wouldn't know Victor was really gone. Braeden plays the powerful
billionaire Victor Newman, who is integral to most plots. And the
movie will be no different. "I'm pretty much in every scene," he says.

The movie was shot on location in the small town of Bracketville,
Texas--not the place you'd likely hope to find daytime's leading man.
But he has a habit of showing up in unlikely places. Born Hans
Gudegast, he showed up on the '60s-era hit Rat Patrol, playing a
German soldier, and as the star of the sci-fi series Colossus: The
Forbin Project.

Must Be the Mustache
When you are one of the most popular men in daytime TV, the audience
doesn't want to take its eyes off you for too long. And so Braeden
counts among his many fans some big stars--including Aretha Franklin,
hockey great Wayne Gretzky and former Minnesota governor Jesse
Ventura, who agreed to appear on Y&R in a cameo only as long as he
could share screen time with Braeden.

Those familiar with the history of Y&R know that when he was first
introduced in 1980, Braeden wasn't even supposed to stick around for
more than a few months. Victor was evil incarnate--he kept his wife's
lover hostage in the basement (and fed him a steady diet of rats, no
less).

He really wasn't, and still isn't, the guy you root for. He is
ruthless, and he takes no prisoners when it comes to business. Victor
came by his billions the old-fashioned way--he earned them.

Then executive producer and head writer, the late Bill Bell, saw
something in Eric Braeden that said he could be a leading man. Braeden
is still charming the ladies--from 9 to 99, on-and off-camera.

Why does this mustachioed 60-something still clang loudly as a sex
symbol? "It's not the mustache," he laughs, "if that's what you are
asking." But, lip hair aside, in a medium that often favors the
squeaky-clean young and bare pecs of male models barely out of acting
class, why is Braeden still breaking hearts?

Ask Braeden and you're asking the wrong guy. "I never wanted to
analyze why Victor was popular [with women]. I suppose it's because he
is powerful."

Two Lives to Live
The same, of course, could be said of Braeden. "Even after all these
years," he says, "I take this work very seriously. We don't get a lot
of time to make it real, but that's what we have to do every day. I
love that I work with people who also care very deeply."

Ah, so it's like a family at Y&R? After 27 years, while it might not
feel "secure," he surely feels he has a home in Genoa City, right?
"That stuff about TV shows being a family is a crock," he practically
spits. "That's crazy. This is no family. It's work. My home is my
home. This is not home."

Uh, okay Eric, we believe you. But, to the outside world, Braeden
enjoys such inordinate off-the-chart chemistry with his leading lady,
Melody Thomas Scott, who plays his long-suffering wife, Nikki, that
it's hard to imagine they don't enjoy a great friendship when the
cameras are not rolling. "I respect Mel enormously," he says. "We are
friends, but to say we are family is Hollywood talk. We are work
colleagues."

A Softer Side
For all his tough talk--and he'll hate us for saying this--deep down
there is a real softie in Eric Braeden. Ask him how proud he is of his
son, screenwriter Christian Gudegast (he wrote A Man Apart), and he
becomes mush. You could also see a few tears well up when Braeden got
his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this summer.

And if you truly want to see him light up, mention his 3-year-old
granddaughter. He melts like a chocolate drop when asked if being a
grandfather has changed him. "Oh, my," he beams, "you have no idea. If
you could see what that little one has me doing, you would be shocked!
We have this game--I'm pretending to come into the room and I don't
see her and then she scares me and I have to run through the house
over and over, pretending to be scared."

And almost on cue, Braeden is called to the set to do some more
pretend--but this time it's something millions will get the pleasure
of watching.

The Y&R Story You Won't See - SID Article
« Thread Started on Mar 5, 2008, 10:03am »
When Y&R first brought Jill's son to Genoa City, he was shrouded in
mystery. But since then, any hint of the character's dark past has
been dropped. What gives?

Savvy viewers of Y&R know that David's not the only one to make a
clandestine cell phone call in Genoa City: In 2007, shortly after Cane
started working his way into the lives of his Genoa City neighbors,
viewers listened in on a one-way phone call which indicated the
handsome newbie might have a secret or two lurking just beneath the
surface.

Does Cane's portrayer, Daniel Goddard, remember the cryptic call? "I
do," the actor tells In Depth. "I had one [very mysterious phone
conversation]." As for why the writers didn't follow up on that,
Goddard theorizes, "I think what happened is that there was a good
response to Cane." So positive, in fact, that the show apparently
decided to make Cane a good guy... with a weakness for bad girl Amber,
who quickly tricked him into a fake marriage.

While many thought Cane might try and steal from his rich mom or
punish grandma Katherine for having switched him at birth, he has
instead become a loving member of their dysfunctional clan and a
devoted employee to the family company. "This is giving him a chance
to work with Jill and allow their realtionship to grow," Goddard
notes. "I think they're grooming Cane to move forward and eventually
take over one day."

While nothing's ever secure in show business, Goddard's looking
forward to playing Cane for quite some time. "Someone at the show said
to me recently, 'I keep forgetting that you've only been here for
about a year. The way you've been received makes it seem like you've
been here much longer."

SOAP OPERA DIGEST INSIDER

March 6, 2008

Greetings From The Editor
Lynn Leahey

Dear Readers,
When our John and Marlena cover came out almost three weeks ago, we
got enthusiastic mail from DAYS fans who couldn't wait to see the
romantic scenes described by Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn. "It's
sexier than anything we've ever done," Hall told Digest in our cover
story. But fans weren't so enthusiastic when the scenes aired, and
much of what had been described had been deleted. What gives? We asked
DAYS for an explanation, which appears in the new issue. Meanwhile,
DAYS, our readers assure us all will be forgiven if they can see the
scenes in flashbacks.... We had a tough time believing the rumors that
Martha Byrne (Lily) was leaving ATWT — she's been an integral part of
the show, and a loyal and enthusiastic cast member, for over twenty
years. But when we contacted her she confirmed that yes, she was on
her way out, despite the fact that she'd wanted to stay. She gave
Digest an exclusive account about how it all went down, in the new issue.

Tales From The Interview

en it came to her scenes. She was a natural and I was impressed. But
everyone made me feel welcome and we had a good time. There were no
egos on that set."
Though the 2006 movie was a hit, Thomson has been doing a lot of work
in his native Canada (he hails from Ottawa), mainly to deal with the
recently ended months-long writers' strike in Hollywood. "The
circumstances for going back there weren't the best, but it's been
nice working at home," he told me. "Plus, Canada is really building
their movie industry."

Still, Thomson is eager to return to daytime in the United States.
"I've always loved soaps, which is why I've done so many," he
explains. "Where else do you get to play a character for such a long
time and really build that person? Mason still remains one of my
favorite roles."

Mara Levinsky: In his five-plus years in Pine Valley, Aiden Turner has
never lacked for fans. What he has lacked, AMC viewers know well, is
screen time, story, and a viable love interest. All that changed last
year when AMC switched head writers and new chief scribes James Harmon
Brown and Barbara Esensten decided to roll the dice and see how Turner
would perform if elevated to the front burner. We spoke about his
metamorphosis from glorified day player to leading man both before and
after the show tampered with its "Ailee" formula (recasting Sabine
Singh's Greenlee with the role's originator, Rebecca Budig). He
discussed all of these critical Pine Valley transitions — and his plan
to keep Aidan's "grief sex" with Kendall from ruining things with
Greens — in this week's interview.

AFTER PARTY

Walt Willey's (Jack, AMC) annual tradition at ABC Daytime's Salute to
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is to debut an original,
spoof-filled ditty. He gave Digest permission to reprint the lyrics to
this year's tune.
"Happy Not To Be In Love (The Ballad Of Erica And Jack)"
We came into each other's lives twenty-some years ago/You were about
to marry my brother, so how were we to know/That a plane crash in the
desert and those long0;cold starry nights/Would plant the seeds of
love in between the fights, yeah, in between the fights

I finally won you, lady, as much as any man can/And though you loved
me plenty, you've got this short attention span/And you've left my
arms more than once for a new one or an ex/But that's okay, because
when we're not in love, that's when we have sex, ooh, that's when we
have sex

(Chorus:) So I'm happy not to be in love, it's much better that way/We
roll around between the sheets much more/And I hate to have to say it
to say it, but it happens to be true/ I'm happy not to be in love/But
I'm glad that it's with you, I'm glad that it's with you

We finally made our way back to each other's loving arms/Happy that we
rediscovered each other's loving charms/We made it to the altar and
and we got married, true/But our kids' constant problems, they went
and made us blue, they went and made us blue/So we started fussin' and
fightin', then everything went awry/We had nobody else to blame, no
other girl or guy/I could have told you that I love you, but that you
already knew/So I said I didn't love you, words that could never be
true, words that could never be true

(Chorus)

Now some time has passed, we've had the chance to lick our wounds/We
realize that for us, it'll never be moons and spoons and Junes/One
thing we've learned for sure is that we can never really part/And that
you, my darlin' Erica, will always have my heart/You've had it from
the start

So I'm happy to be back in love, it's much better that way/We wake up
in each other's arms much more/And now there's one thing you know
about your man Jack/That no matter what happens, he's always got your
back, always got your back/You keep me coming back/To me you are like
crack/Don't bother to unpack/We'll just take another tact/Each other's
all we lack/Because we're Erica and Jack

have things hemmed. But their stuff fits great and is adorable. The
majority of the stuff in my closet right now is from them."

TYPE SET

Soap fans are a vocal bunch — see what fellow viewers are saying this
week.

"GH's Maxie and Spinelli are better together than I ever thought ...
they're actually better! It's the most unlikely pairing, but it's
golden. It would be sweet if they were a real couple. They would take
GH to a whole new level. I want to see more SpinMax!"
M.W., via the Internet

FLASHBACK PHOTO

The new Digest features the shocking details of Martha Byrne's ouster
from ATWT. Here are some retro shots of Byrne, who has played Lily on
and off since 1985.
Here's fresh-faced Byrne at the tender age of 16 (far left).

In 1987, Byrne picked up the Outstanding Ingénue Emmy Award (center).

Byrne took us behind-the-scenes and into her dressing room in 1993.

IN PERSON

I ran into OLTL's Michael Easton and Trevor St. John (John and Todd)
during Super Soap Weekend at a restaurant. They were sitting by
themselves just talking and I wasn't going to bother them because they
were not working and just relaxing, however since they're my two
favorite actors from the show I figured if I was nice and asked for a
quick picture, maybe they wouldn't mind. I know they both value their
privacy, but I figured you only live once. I went up to talk to them
and they were both extremely nice and polite and were happy to pose
for a picture with me. I kept it brief as to not bother them and I
think they appreciated it.
The second picture is with me and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, GH). I
think he has added so much to the show in the short time he's been on.
A lot of the stories are dark (i.e.; Sonny, Jason and the mob wars)
and Spinelli brings a great comedic tone to GH. His scenes with Steve
Burton and Maurice Benard (Jason and Sonny) are priceless. Bradford
was so nice and friendly and gladly posed for a picture with me. You
can see Jason Thompson (Patrick) in the background trying to get out
of the way!

My husband and I recently saw Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Doug and
Julie, DAYS) in Love Letters at the Hoogland Center in Springfield,
IL. They were absolutely magnificent. I had never seen Love Letters
and didn't really know what to expect. I was completely captivated
during the entire performance. It was funny, sassy, and sad. Bill and
Susan were truly shining stars. At the end of the performance I led
the standing ovation from my front row seat. Bill and Susan walked out
to the end of the stage and talked to the audience and sang to us.
They then proceeded to tell us that they would meet us in the lobby
where they talked to everyone, posed for pictures and signed
autographs. They are genuinely nice people who seem to actually enjoy
interacting with their fans.

The first time I met them was in June of 2007 when they were appearing
in The Little Theatre on the Square's 50th anniversary production of
Follies In Concert in Sullivan, IL. Also appearing were Love Letters
Colleen Zenk Pinter (Barbara ATWT) and her husband Mark Pinter (Grant
AW). What a fantastic show this was. My friend and I also attended the
opening night party after the show. We got to meet all the stars and
while they were all gracious I have to say that the soap stars were
definitely more fan friendly. I had a great conversation with Colleen
and her daughter Kelsey about one of the dresses Colleen wore in the
show. It has been my experience that soap stars are very nice friendly
people and I am looking forward to meeting many more. By the way, I
learned about both of these shows from your magazine. Thanks for the
information.

INSIDER POLL

Have your say in our exclusive subscriber-only poll.
Last week, we asked: Without big prime-time budgets for location
shoots, daytime soaps usually make due by creating indoor sets. If a
soap can only afford one real location shoot, which one would you choose?

You said:

The standard castaway or romantic getaway island: 27%
The main street where characters are always bumping into each other: 53%
The beach where all that lovemaking takes place: 12%
The park for all those secret meetings: 8%

Here's this week's question:
What's your dream soap job?:

Starring on a soap

TODAY AT SOAP 0PERA WEEKLY

March 7, 2008

ALL MY CHILDREN's Ryan (Cameron Mathison) has been suffering from some
memory loss lately, so we can understand how he might think he spent years
of his unrecalled life bouncing between two strippers...wait, those are
exes Greenlee (Rebecca Budig) and Kendall (Alicia Minshew), and those are
poles, but didn't they once do something in cosmetics? Don't feel bad,
Ryan ? they almost lost us, too. In our We in Weekly section, Senior
Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto gets to the bottom of ABC's latest trendy
fetish.

THE TOP 10 PLUS
1. ALL MY CHILDREN's Kendall fought off a would-be rapist. How long
before GENERAL HOSPITAL's Sam asks her to appear on EVERYDAY HEROES?

2. YOUNG AND RESTLESS' Adam has a head for Newman business and an eye for
sister-in-law Phyllis. Which will get him in more trouble with Nick?

bar.

Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe, DAYS)
?NBC

4. Remember when DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Chloe didn't care about clothes? Now
she sleeps in couture.

5. GUIDING LIGHT's Beth called Mel the "b"-word when she wouldn't divulge
information about Rick. Guess Beth forgot that she stole Mel's husband.

10. OLTL's Dorian may be right, for once: The district attorney (That
would be you, Nora!) should be disbarred for snooping through other
people's secrets.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
?From Senior Editor Gabrielle Winkel: Attention, readers ? We have
incorporated some fun new elements in our pages. Every week we'll be

some great new PJs? Or maybe ABC's "Hot Guys" calendar? Be sure to pick up
the magazine every week so you can enter!

Also, puzzle lovers, take note ? in addition to our popular crossword and
sudoku puzzles, we've added Double Take. Can you see what's different
between the two photos? It's fun!

MAILBAG
Keep those items coming... We don't mind...

WHY WE CLAPPED
From the moment Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams returned to their
signature roles, it was as if ALL MY CHILDREN's Angie and Jesse had never
left. And once the two actors brought their characters together, it was
magic. New fans had no problem connecting with these legacy characters,
because Angie and Jesse were imbued with so much emotion and...well,
character. In an age of controlling, hipster 20-somethings, Morgan and
Williams made the veterans feel things so deeply that audiences had to
feel them, too. Williams and Morgan acted like characters who had been
wounded by decades apart, which let viewers empathize. Thanks to the
open-hearted talents of Morgan and Williams, even casual viewers now know
more about the inner lives of vets Angie and Jesse than many newer,
front-burner faces. They both deserve Applause, Applause kudos for Issue
12.

LISTENING STATION

measures? Listening Station would be happy to take contributions. Feel

NIGHTWATCH
?From Senior Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto: Fans will find out what happened
to some of their favorite Bachelors and Bachelorettes March 10, thanks to
ABC's THE BACHELOR: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Viewers will have the chance to
catch up with Andrew Firestone and Aaron Buerge, as well as visit the home
of Trista and Ryan Sutter, whose son, Max, will also appear. As a bonus,
fans will get a sneak preview of new Bachelor Matt Grant, who debuts March
17, as well as DeAnna Pappas, who stars in the fourth edition of THE
BACHELORETTE this summer. (Don't worry, there will also be an update on
Brad Womack, who rejected DeAnna and Jenni Croft on THE BACHELOR.) What
happened to Sarah Brice, the nurse Charlie O'Connell selected? Or Moana
Dixon, the last woman eliminated during Dr. Travis Stork's series? How
about former New York Giants quarterback Jesse Palmer? Their fates will
all be revealed Monday night.

?Ian Buchanan (Dr. James Warwick, B&B; ex-Dr. Greg Madden, AMC) appears on
TV Guide Network's FASHION TEAM this Sunday. Check local listings for
times and channel.

?TOP CHEF blows into the Windy City ? Chicago ? for its fourth season on
Bravo beginning March 12 at 10 p.m. The premiere will feature Rocco
DiSpirito. The 16 TOP CHEF: CHICAGO hopefuls will battle it out in
pressure-cooker contests to win $100,000 in seed money to help open a
restaurant, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, and a gourmet vacation in
the French Alps. Padma Lakshmi hosts.

?NBC has canceled LAS VEGAS, which starred Josh Duhamel (ex-Leo, AMC) and
Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda, GH), in its fifth, strike-shortened season.

THE WE IN WEEKLY
?From Senior Writer/Editor Joe Diliberto: It's time once again to play
"ABC Daytime Kink of the Week." And our winner is: pole-dancing! (The foot
fetishism that swept ABC is sooooo yesterday.) It's all about shakin' yer
booty. ALL MY CHILDREN led off with last week's Fusion employees bonding
over taking pole-dancing lessons at the office. Only Kendall, Greenlee,
Babe, Amanda and Annie work there, so they didn't have to worry about
folks walking in on them stripping. Although it took a while for the gals
to warm up to the gyrations, eventually everyone got into the act, and
Annie was comfortable enough to strip down to her bra. This week, GENERAL
HOSPITAL's Diane wanted to get Alexis out of the office to unwind, so she
suggested a late dinner or pole-dancing. "We went pole-dancing last
night," Alexis deadpanned. What a great pair of gal pals these two legal
eagles have become! I was skeptical of them buddying up, but after that
road trip, I was sold. So now the mob mouthpiece and stuffy DA can joke
about getting their groove on. Maybe they can open their own law firm with
that gimmick: "Davis & Miller ? talk about legal briefs!" They can bill in
$1 increments. For the non-attorneys out there, pole-dancing is an equal
opportunity sport ? Ryan managed to bare as much flesh as Annie, and even
gruff Zach loosened up enough to give the pole a spin. So who knows? This
could be the next craze to sweep offices nationwide. (Forget talking LOST
at the watercooler!) Which leaves only one question: If it's for work, can
I expense one of those portable poles?

?From News Editor Mala Bhattacharjee: Oh my, how the worm does turn. Just
a few short weeks after I was praising Jonathan's return on GUIDING LIGHT,
I am so glad to see him go. I just wish he'd left baby Sarah behind. In
the past, I always loved Jonathan being such a wildcard psycho. I mean, he
seduced his own cousin and it was ice-cold...yet awesome. Tom Pelphrey's
fantastically organic and visceral performances certainly helped my
fangirling. But somewhere along the way, I lost the love. Looking at this
guy who yells at women, manhandles them, and spends way too much time
talking to his dead wife (cousincousincousin), I can't see why I'm
supposed to root for him as better for Sarah than grandpa Alan. Especially
at Lizzie's expense. Formerly manipulative Lizzie has grown up, and become
sensitive and responsible (but still endearingly wacky!), so why can't she
be in her daughter's life? Does anyone really think obsessive,
over-involved, nobody-loves-my-baby-like-I-do Johnny Boy isn't going to
screw up his kid? Please. I can't wait until Sarah is 14 and he's cleaning
the shotgun on the porch when she brings home dates ? if she's allowed to
leave the house at all.
