The Young and the Restless
Jack and Sharon scandalize everyone in Genoa City, especially their
ex-spouses, Phyllis and Nick. Jack gets Victor to help him in his
plot to regain control of Jabot Cosmetics. The Abbotts aren't pleased
about Gloria's job promotion at Jabot. Jill and Kay are worried about
Billy's behavior as he starts his new career. Dru is extra jealous
when Carmen surprises Neil with a new business prospect.
The Young and the Restless: She's the Boss
Lynn Marie Latham by Cliff Lipson/CBSIndustry insiders already knew
that Lynn Marie Latham was top dog at CBS's The Young and the
Restless. Now it's official.
Latham has just been appointed executive producer of Y&R. She also
retains the title of head writer as she leads the writing team and
oversees all creative aspects of the No. 1-rated soap.
FYI, her talented colleagues, Kay Alden and Jack Smith, will each
continue to hold the title of head writer, too. But Latham is
definitely the show's proverbial "She Who Must Be Obeyed." (Although
Y&R hasn't announced it, Smith has quietly relinquished the title of
co-executive producer.)
"Lynn has done a terrific job balancing stories that are both
compelling and emotional," Bell Dramatic Serial Company president
Bill Bell, Jr. said in a statement. "She has embraced the history of
the show and found new opportunities for storylines that have great
passion."
"Lynn is a consummate storyteller. From the page to the screen, her
talent and heart grace every aspect of The Young and the Restless,"
added CBS Daytime chief Barbara Bloom. "Already, under her
stewardship as head writer, she has created meaningful and engaging
stories for Y&R's core characters. I am thrilled to see her expand
her duties to executive producer and confident that, under her
guidance, Y&R fans will be richly rewarded."
This TVGuide.com reporter shares the suits' confidence in the
eminently qualified Latham. Since she took over at Y&R, the show's
been refreshingly faster paced and fascinating.
Oh, and don't forget that she wrote my Knots Landing for six seasons
and produced the classic nighttime sudser for three of those seasons.
She was top scribe at Port Charles for two years, too. Her résumé
also includes sudsy series like Homefront, Savannah and Pacific
Palisades. If only all my soaps had bosses this gifted, daytime would
be a brighter place.

* Here are NEW Fall previews courtesy Sony:
Michael is caught between wanting to be the exemplary husband and
father, and his desire to do whatever is necessary to support his
mother in her battle against Jack.
Paul, ever loyal to Lauren, sees red flags ahead for her marriage, as
Michael's loyalty to Gloria pulls him back toward a darker side. Will
Paul's feelings for this woman he once loved come to the surface once
again?
Nick and Phyllis and Michael and Lauren happily anticipate the birth
of their babies, hoping that both pregnancies will proceed without
incident to their due dates in November.
Nick and Phyllis plan a future together with their baby. Can Nick
leave his life with Sharon behind and find happiness in starting over
with Phyllis?
Sharon, having lost Nick and feeling there is no future with Brad,
finds solace with Jack. Or is it more?
Despite himself, Jack's heart aches, as Phyllis's pregnancy becomes
more evident. Sharon, too, can't help feeling pangs at Nick and
Phyllis's joy.
Victor, aware now of his epilepsy, is determined not to let the
disease interfere with his life. Will medication successfully keep
him seizure-free?
Victor and Nikki, having faced his illness together, seem closer than
ever. But they will face new challenges as his perceptions become
clearer, and he begins to re-examine his life.
The stage is set for the grand opening of the first N.V.P. retreat.
With all the interpersonal dynamics in play – Phyllis, Nick, Sharon,
Brad, Victoria, Jack, Dru, Neil, Carmen – the event promises to be a
night to remember. But after the soiree ends, Nikki gets the biggest
surprise of all.
Victoria assesses her relationship with Brad, as she finds herself
unable to forget what happened in the church in Parma, and the
frightening side of her husband she witnessed there.
Nicholas encourages Victoria to get out of her marriage, maintaining
that Brad is a man she does not know, who has been dishonest with her
not only about his past, but also about his feelings for Sharon.
Ashley, having learned Brad has been living a false life, is deeply
mistrustful of Brad and concerned about the implications for Abby.
Victor's deep-seated mistrust of Brad re-emerges when he learns Brad
has been living a secret life.
Brad, still concerned about the safety of his family, hires J.T. and
Paul to continue their far-reaching investigation. But is the source
of danger more near at hand?
The loss of his father spurs Jack to new lengths to pay back his debt
to John by regaining control of Jabot. Will Katherine become a pawn
in Jack's game? Will Michael, Kevin, and Gloria discover his scheme?
The stage is set for conflict and intrigue, as Kay and Jill invest
their trust in Billy, while Jack enlists his younger brother as his
ally in the battle for Jabot. Ashley, caught in the middle, shares
the desire to regain Jabot and eliminate Gloria, but fears the legal
ramifications of Jack's actions.
Jack is obsessed with the desire to remove any trace of Gloria from
the Abbott family. Will tenacious Gloria, with the help of Michael
and Kevin, be able to thwart his attempts?
While Jack wants to believe that he is doing what his father would
want for the Abbott family, Jack's conviction is shaken when an
unexpected visitor won't allow him to lie to himself.
Gloria has a surreal ally in her war against the Abbotts that only
Jack is aware of. Will Jack successfully resist his father's
continued attacks on his conscience?
Gloria, intrigued with Will Bardwell's inheritance, seeks his
companionship; putting her in competition with Jill and Ashley for
Will's affections.
Dru's jealousy boils over, and things spin further out of control
with Dru, Neil, and Carmen.
Devon faces a crisis. How will he and the Winters family adjust to
the massive change in his life?
Colleen and J.T.'s relationship will be tested as she returns to
college at GCU and finds an unexpected kindred spirit.
Daniel and Lily cling to their young marriage, but Lily finds herself
more and more involved in all the problems facing her family.
Kevin appears headed for true romance with Jana. Is her interest in
him sincere, or is there much more to this mysterious woman than he
realizes?

Casting News, 2 Cast members' departure
I just read that SOW is reporting that TP is definitely leaving in
December, Stephanie in January. Can anyone confirm this?
Revolving Door
Out - Stephanie Gatschet (Tammy) : Setside sources say the actress,
who joined GL in 2002, will leave in January. Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan)
departs in December. "We don't comment on contracts," reminds a GL
rep.
--------------------------------------------------------------
One exciting spoiler, Rick storyline
I know there is a lot of negativity on the board about the current
state of GL. I just have to give a big YAHOO to one of the spoilers --
that the writers are gearing up for a big Rick story now that MOL is
back on contract. This excites me to no end.
Say what you will about the Rick/Beth fling (and there are problems
with how it is executed) -- I'd rather see Rick dealing with everyday
problems of connecting with his wife in their busy worlds than see
Ava accidentally overdosing Emma. Rick is a character with history to
draw from, and an incredibly talented vet that I'm personally looking
forward to filling the screen again. Back in high school, my friends
and I would discuss who we'd rather marry -- Rick or Phillip -- and I
always picked Rick, the good old pal. So, hurray that my good old pal
is getting a sl! ANd here's to hoping that TPTB do it right!

Greetings From The Editor
Lynn Leahey
Dear Readers,
DAYS OF OUR LIVES may have been overdue for a change, but the show is
about to make up for lost time. Emmy-winning Head Writer Hogan
Sheffer speaks to Digest about what we can expect, and I have to say
it sounds like he's off to a roaring start. Sheffer's got a healthy
appreciation for the vets on the show (remember, he came from AS THE
WORLD TURNS where he made fine use of long-time characters) and a
respect for storyline history. As for bringing in a new family, the
refreshingly candid writer scoffs, "I think that's despicable, I
really do.... You bring in a new family, nobody has any investment in
them." The man knows what he's talking about -- see what else he has
to say in our new issue. You'll also get the scoop on the latest
round of DAYS exits, rumors of ins and outs on BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL,
and the identity of ATWT's slasher (to the reader who wrote asking
me: you were right!). Check your mailbox!
Tales From The Interview
Reporting By Lori Latusek
I always know I'm going to have a good time talking to PASSIONS's
Charles Divins (Chad). He is funny, gives good quotes and always asks
how things in my life are going -- a sign of a down-to-earth actor.
Oh yeah, and he usually won't go without ragging on me for my high
school job in a mom and pop video store that sold X-rated movies. I
was too young and innocent to enter the mysterious adults-only room,
but the movie titles will forever haunt me. Hence, when I was
interviewing Divins in 2004 for our Sexiest Men issue and asking
questions like "What gets you in the mood?" and "What's your sexiest
feature?", I couldn't resist dropping some of those titles to break
the ice. This is a PG-rated newsletter so I won't be sharing them
here. What I will share is the hilarity that went on while talking to
Divins and Brook Kerr (Whitney) for their Q&A. I had a few minutes to
catch up with the always-sweet Kerr while the publicist tracked down
Divins on the set. The actor then jumped right in
to the conversation by cracking jokes about his on-screen lover. Over
the next 20 minutes, the duo had me cracking up with their personal
digs and opinions about their storyline. While reading their feature
in the 9/12 issue, prepare to laugh.
FanFun
Reprting By Mara Levinsky
Our coverage of ALL MY CHILDREN's annual Fan Club luncheon appears in
the 9/12 issue and as always, I had a blast at the event. Then again,
I (along with other members of the press) get the best seat in the
house: I get to mix and mingle with the actors in the VIP room while
they dine before they're introduced to fans. I had a lot to get done
(the show was about to go on hiatus, so I had a bunch of assignments
to complete during the press time), but managed to sneak in a little
fun, as when Justin Bruening (Jamie) and I put on a little show of
being sick of each other, since we'd had a (completely delicious and
criminally fun) three-hour dinner together earlier in the week, and
when Jeff Branson (Jonathan) acted out some blocking from a tender
scene he'd recently taped with my arm as a stand-in for Chrishell
Stause's (Amanda). "Let the record show that he is acting this out on
my arm," I noted into my tape recorder. "Hey," he intoned into the
mic. "I'm a Method actor!" During the fu
n Q&A with fans that took up the bulk of the luncheon itself, I
couldn't stop smiling -- watching the cute way the actors interact
with each other and the fans never gets old for me and always makes
me feel proud to be walking the AMC beat.
Type Set
Soap fans are a vocal bunch -- see what fellow viewers are saying
about their shows.
I have been watching this great show [YOUNG AND RESTLESS] for many
years, but I am at my wit's end. What kind of a message are we
sending to our young people when crimes have been committed and this
soap just forgets about them and no one is punished? Starting with
Phyllis; she ran down Paul and Christine with her car and got away
with it. Next comes crazy Kevin, who now is an angel. He burned down
Gina's restaurant with Colleen in it; there was talk between the kids
about it, but no one pursued the evidence. And now comes the worst:
Gloria wants to get even with Ashley and Jack so she damages the new
Jabot product, and an innocent woman is killed. I am getting so upset
with the writers who are letting these storylines fade away. Does
crime really pay?

Many versatile past and present soap stars also perform on stage.
Here, fans weigh in with their reviews.
I saw Jack Wagner [Nick, B&B] in his final performance of Jekyll &
Hyde several years ago. I cannot tell you how wonderful he was. I go
to N.Y.C. (from NJ not a big trip) to the theatre about once a month.
Many shows I see and enjoy, but promptly forget. Even though I saw
Jack Wagner at least four or five years ago, his performance is still
very memorable. I recently saw he was at the House of Blues in CA. A
HOB recently opened in Atlantic City, NJ. If he was ever booked
there, I would immediately be on the phone for tickets. He is a
wonderful performer in any genre. (And I hear he is a terrific golfer
as well.)
