she gets legal help from someone soaps fans will recognize. BayCity's
Cass Winthrop, is back in Oakdale. "He is so awesome, I

Schnetzner. Who was a staple on AW and last appeared on
ATWT in 2002. Its not that Cass and Gwen get along smoothly, she just
has this thing where she allocates people as her

is going to need that stability because the case

"She doesn't start out nervous but what ends up happening in court is
kind of shocking. Because she is told she has a strong
case. She doesn't. She gets her hopes up and they are dashed." says
Landon.Whose character is easily baited by the more
experienced Carly into blurting out that the father doesn't care
about the baby [named Rory in honor of Rosanna] - thus
prompting the judge to order her to immediately name the father in
court." It is such a desperate moment, she needs to please
the judge in the room, and that's the only way. She promised Casey
she wouldn't say anything but she would much rather do
that than lose the baby." says the actress. Once it's on the record

Chances of NSA and PAS being rehired?
From angelbabe
I asked a friend of mine who is in the know about these things, what
are the chances that TPTB could change their minds and
not fire Paul and Nancy? He told me the chances are close to zero.I
asked him about all of the letters and phone calls that
the Mannyacs are sending saying how loved the couple is,would that
not make a difference? He said that he was sure that TPTB
already knew how popular this couple was and hearing it now wouldn't
make any difference. He went on to say that it was
probably why TPTB fired them with little or no warning. If they were
put on recurring, that could be changed, but being fired
was totally different. He feels like the Manny fans are fighting a
loosing battle but one I guess they feel they must fight
for.A lady on the Mannyac board said she talked to Paul last night
and he never mentioned being fired and told her to
continue writing for Danny.I can't believe that Paul could even
believe that the fans letters could save him even now.It
sounds to me like its a pretty done deal.
From Paddy
I've seen many actors fired from soaps and IMO, it's very rare when
one is rehired very quickly. Sometimes they are brought
back down the line depending on the circumstances of their departure.
Look at the campaign we did on this very board to save
Grant Aleksander and Phillip? Nothing changed.
I've read the cheerleading on the Manny board, and I guess it's never
over till it's over. As long as NSA and PAS are still
taping, I guess there is still hope. But, if I was a Manny fan, I
don't think I'd get my hopes up too high. I would guess the
writers/TPTB have a reason for writing Manny out, and depending on
their exist, it's probably already been written or
formulated into the storyline. JMO. I'm very certain TPTB know how
much the Manny fans love their couple. How could they not
after all these years? And, I'm sure the fans will make threats that
if NSA and PAS are fired, they'll quit as viewers.
Again, I believe TPTB are prepared for this response. They've seen it
before but usually proceed with their plans.
I'm not sure why PAS did not confirm anything to his fans last night.
Perhaps, he feels the confirmation should come from GL
itself?
I'm sure glad I won't be working at the GL studios and the PGP
offices with the amount of e-mails, letters, and phone calls
they are going to get from irrate Manny fans.
By Dax
Anything's possible.
I think 'recurring' is pretty possible (yes, I've read that NSA's fan
club didn't get that impression... I just kinda think
GL may try to 'keep' them, sorta-kinda). Story continues... but Danny
and Michelle won't be the airtime hogs they once were.
They would (due to their 'popularity') probably be the MOST 'present'
recurring players if they were to take on that status
(hey, look, Beth's got a story for a few weeks now... never mind that
it's AWFUL...).
Shows have caved to fan pressure before, but... I think they've been
considering this for awhile...
It's about the budget, first and foremost (not pissing off fanbases,
I don't think...). And which baskets they've chosen to
place all their eggs in. Danny and Michelle don't really fit into the
blonde triumviarate, so they're expendable.
And on the positive side, their story potential WAS limited.
Their 'biggest fans' didn't want them paired with others, and
the apart/together cycle was/is... all played out. I mean, I'm tired
of the same with Josh/Reva and Holden/Lily and they've
got a LOT of years on Manny, but... there's more to those characters
to 'play with' than there is with Danny and Michelle,
always more available shit for the writers to throw at them. Manny
had a psycho mother and generic and redundant mobsters and
a Husband that would always choose to lie to his Wife to 'protect'
her (and their son). Not a lot to work with. Lather,
rinse, repeat.
I wouldn't be stunned to see PAS or NSA return to the show 'by
popular demand'... but I won't be expecting it, either. Could
go either way.

Matt and Vanessa (that 'happy couple' can-not-separate-them parallel

Both were on our screens for a couple days this year.
But not together... show won't throw their fans THAT bone... they
didn't even get a 'last day' together when they were both
still ON the show...

Soapdom Spoilers for week of 8/15...
Harley has clearly been obsessing over Phillip's case lately, but
this week we have reason to question her motives for being
so active with Mallet in scoping things out. While in Florida, Mallet
kisses Harley! Does she kiss him back?
Then, back at home, Rick announces that he has exhumed Phillip's body
and confirms Phillip's death. Why does Rick say this
when we know it is not true? Does he have Harley's best interest in
mind, or is he up to something else?
Maybe Rick's announcement is just what Harley needed to hear, seeing
as she and Gus finally exchange their wedding vows.
Apparently, Mallet's kiss didn't mean anything to Harley after all…
but the same doesn't necessarily go for Mallet.
Regardless, he stays silent as he observes the wedding ceremony. Has

their almost wedding, Gus goes to Alan who tries to tell him that
Phillip is out there -- somewhere. The ceremony is
interupted by Rick, who tells them that Phillip is 100% dead, but he

Greetings From The Editor

Dear Readers,
Thank you to all of you who responded to our recent reader survey.
We're using the information to make sure you're getting
everything you want from a soap magazine, and your feedback was very
helpful. Some of you will be contacted for future
surveys and if you have the time, I hope you'll continue to let us
know what you're watching and what's on your mind. I told
the people producing the survey we had loyal, involved readers who
would step up to the plate for us, but even so they were
stunned at the level of response we had. Of course I was happy to
tell them, "I told you so!"
It's brutally hot in New York right now. It would be awfully nice to
be sitting by a pool or the ocean right now, but at
least I get to watch my soaps! I hope you're getting a chance to do
both.
The Water Cooler
Reporting By Mike Bruno
While interviewing OLTL's Bree Williamson (Jessica/Tess) and Renee
Elise Goldsberry (Evangeline) for the On-Set Pals feature
in an upcoming issue of Digest, I learned some interesting things
about these two. First, they're both Capricorns. Second,
they seem to thrive off the balance created between Williamson's
single-girl, bar-hopping downtown life and Goldsberry's
quieter, married uptown life. But the most insightful detail came
toward the end of the interview when Williamson told me
that Goldsberry was an accomplished poet. "You'll have to really,
really beg her to read it to you, though," Williamson said,
"because she's kinda shy about it." When I asked Goldsberry about her
poetry, the actress let out a nervous giggle and then
admitted that yes, she is sort of shy about sharing her verse, but
that Williamson has found a way to bring her out of her
shell. "When I read, she does this sort of interpretive dance next to
me that goes along with the words," Goldsberry said.
"It's really incredible. If she dances, I'll totally read for you
sometime." She then burst into hysterical laughter,
admitting that they had both pulled my leg with the story, and
demonstrating the last interesting thing I learned about these
gals: They love messin' with ya.

ATWT "I'm very disappointed at ATWT's decision to fire Hunt Block and
what they've done to the character of Craig, a fixture
in Oakdale for most of the past 25 years. Worse still, was the
interview that ATWT Head Writer Jean Passanante [gave]in the
8/9 issue. The idea that Craig has to be written off to pay for his
crimes is ludicrous. Craig's character, which has long
been duplicitous and greedy, has never been violent, especially
towards those he cares for. The idea that Craig would
intentionally run his wife, Rosanna, off the road completely goes
against his entire history, especially with Ro. A few
months ago, Craig risked his life to save Rosanna from serial killer
James Stenbeck! It just doesn't make sense. While the
writers may feel Craig should pay for his crimes, apparently other
characters in Oakdale go free. If ATWT wants characters to
pay for their crimes, then Barbara and Dusty should have suffered
long before Craig. The loss of Hunt Block to the ATWT cast
is extremely sad. The destruction of his character is unfair in light
of the incredible lack of paying for crimes other
characters in Oakdale do."

Dear Readers,
Are you loving the scenes on BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL in which meddlesome,
manipulative Stephanie is finally getting what's coming
to her? Susan Flannery (Stephanie), Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke)
and Lesley-Anne Down (Jackie) have been fantastic (making
up for the confusingly bland Dr. Mark). I've waited months for
Steph's comeuppance and it was worth every minute. DAYS OF OUR
LIVES fans will say the same about what's happening to Kate next
week -- I don't want to ruin any surprises, but our next
issue's cover line, "Kate's Busted," gives you a clue. On soaps,
revenge on someone who's wronged is sweet indeed -- life

I had a really interesting lunch interview today with CBS's Barbara
Bloom (senior vice president, Daytime, Children's
Programs and Special Projects) and while we were talking about
GUIDING LIGHT, she mentioned having read a transcript of one
of Digest's GL chats from a couple of months ago. As we talked about
the fans' passionate, articulate discussion about their
show (and especially in reaction to budget cuts), I got a little
wistful about our chats being discontinued. Yes, sometimes
it became a giant fan base war, but the chat was my most direct link
to the actual viewers -- who I looked forward to seeing
every other week -- and it also gave me a chance to address their
questions/concerns about the magazine. I've since become an
even bigger Internet lurker than before. My regular stops include the
busiest ezboard forums ParkWest (whose members sent me
a very nice e-card on the last chat day), Beautiful Prose and Saints
No More, as well as weloveatwt.com and the AS THE WORLD
TURNS boards over at Television Without Pity (my normal source for
all things prime-time) -- so I can report back to everyone
here, and whoever will listen at ATWT, for that matter. Since a lot
of the actors are a little nervous about checking online,
they'll sometimes ask what the fans are saying, and sometimes, I'll
volunteer it -- just today, I told Grayson McCouch
(Dusty) about the increase in positive Dusty buzz lately. So to the
chatters: I miss you all, and please keep letting me know
about the best new ATWT Web sites to check out. And to my bosses: I
consider all of this research, not goofing off.

"I have been a fan of BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL for 12 years, and I have
always hated the way women are portrayed on this show.
They are seen as weak and needy, and if a woman is portrayed as being
strong and independent, it is presented in a negative
light. You have Brooke, who sleeps around because she has to have a
man by her side to support her. With the return of my
favorite character, Taylor, who is standing by and allowing Ridge to
tell her that he needs to spend time with Brooke. What?
Then there is Stephanie, the only independent woman on the show,
whose independence is portrayed as evil. She is evil because
Ridge married Taylor of his own choosing. Now Jackie is out to
destroy Stephanie because she cannot keep her own man. Then
you have Bridget and Nick and his inappropriate relationship with
Brooke. Bridget, who instead of standing up for herself
after witnessing inappropriate interaction between Nick and her mom,
runs off crying into the arms of another man. Finally
there is Darla, who only appears to stroke Thorne's ego."

1. After ALL MY CHILDREN's Tad was shot, Dixie cut open his shirt —

2. Brooke was BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL when she finally gave it to

3. AS THE WORLD TURNS' Keith climbed a ladder to Lily's bedroom. How

4. AMC's Zach needs some new help: His pit bosses let Lily win

told them. And security didn't check the obvious minor's ID?
5. It's a good thing GH's junior detective Jesse wears his shield

6. PASSIONS' Liz and Alistair certainly have one-track minds. During

Julian and Katherine, respectively. Why not pair off Liz and Al?!
7. Kudos to DAYS OF OUR LIVES for featuring veterans Deidre Hall

Wayne Northrop (Alex) in a front-burner summer storyline. That
formula has always worked well on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.
8. Too bad Dr. Thomas turned out to be a psycho, considering how many
characters on GH are in desperate need of therapy.
9. With all the yelling on GUIDING LIGHT, Procter & Gamble should
market a line of earplugs for the characters to shill (and
the audience to wear).
10. B&B's Stephanie must be despondent. She was wearing black

Bridget's wedding.
11. When Y&R's Paul saw Nikki's "MAR" clue in her blood, it would've
been hilarious if he had responded, "My mother's

12. When OLTL's Viki confronted Hayes in jail, we were waiting for
her to scare him by going, "You think YOU'RE NUTS? I have
SEVEN personalities! Which one would you like to see first?!"
13. At the rate he's going, PASSIONS' little Mark is going to need as

We have always been big fans of Eva LaRue (ex-Maria, AMC) around

Nightwatch
Miss AMERICAN IDOL? CBS' new reality show ROCK STAR: INXS is a fine,
stage-smashing substitute, and it drums several
improvements into the singing competition genre.
It makes a dramatic difference that the contestants, all of whom are
competing to replace the late Michael Hutchence as INXS'
lead singer, generally get to perform songs they know well and love —
imagine that! Along with the memorable rock hits (such
as R.E.M.'s "The One I Love" and the Black Crowes' "Hard to Handle"),
there is suspense. (Will Mig be able to articulate
every complex phrase in "Walk This Way"?) There are also some shocks:
Two women were axed at once, after doing commendable
jobs on stage. These talented rockers aren't saddled with '60s songs
or grandiose movie themes. Watching them pick from (and
occasionally trade) a number of songs each week is a treat, but their
ability to arrange and rehearse their perfs with the
show's wildly versatile band is a wonderful bonus. J.D.'s tough take
on Alanis Morissette's "Hand in My Pocket" was a catchy
winner.
And here's the kicker: Each week's three lowest viewer vote-getters
have one more chance to prove themselves by singing INXS
numbers...to INXS itself, who sends one home. The bandmates, acting
as the show's judges (along with the surprisingly
telegenic co-host, musician Dave Navarro), make quick decisions and
some harsh comments, but they're usually on the mark. As
for who will make it big, Ty may be a front-runner, but the energized
J.D., explosive Marty and ethereally voiced Jessica are
the wailers to watch. — MW
The We In Weekly
From Joe Diliberto: Bravo to AMC's Reggie for setting Lily straight:
Ghosts don't exist, and people who believe in them are
simply deluding themselves. Or watching soap operas, where ghosts
tend to appear with...er, frightening regularity, but
little point. If Cassie's ghost wanted to be useful and do more than
just make Nick sad on Y&R, she could tell everybody she
was driving the car, and get Daniel off the hook.
From Mala Bhattacharjee: GL's Ritchie Coster, as Nate/Alfred, is
without a doubt one of the scariest villains to ever hit
daytime. As the tension builds in all of these Reva/Jonathan/Nate
scenes, we have to remind ourselves that the talented
Coster is simply (and very effectively) playing a part. I guess we
should count ourselves lucky that he hasn't teamed up with
Roscoe Born's Terrible Tom on Y&R. That's one crossover that would
leave viewers checking under the bed.
From Robert Schork: Some of the best young adult characters on soaps
are the ones we watched grow up. That kind of real-time
backstory provides character depth and storyline potential that you
just can't wing with newly created characters. Watching
all of the Sturm and Drang whirling around GH's Michael — how many
adults are fighting over him, how many traumatic things he
has experienced — it occurred to me that Michael has the potential to
be THE tortured male antihero in another 10 years. Note
to Sonny and Jason: You think you have your hands full NOW?

Robert Schork isn't alone in recalling how things played
out the first time around. Check out his version of events in our The

The Top 10 Plus
What Weekly editors are buzzing about...or not.
1. Who talks to their mom while wearing a gaping bathrobe? ALL MY
CHILDREN's JR! Casual viewers tuning in might assume JR and
Di shared more than just DNA.
2. ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Kevin and Kelly steamed up the afternoon with
their hot shower sex. Scandalized editors noted that you
could almost see their...suds.
3. As if AS THE WORLD TURNS' baby-switch story wasn't derivative
enough, Will actually wanted to nickname Jennifer's kid
"Lucky."
4. Most likely to...solve a crime: High school yearbooks figured
prominently as keys to mysteries on GENERAL HOSPITAL and
OLTL.
5. If you listen to the promos, it's a "Summer of Secrets" on ABC
Daytime and CBS' prime-time BIG BROTHER 6. Well, the ad
campaigns were no secret....
6. GUIDING LIGHT's Blake wanted to know about all of Harley's
adventures. Except for Lena and Wallace dying. No one wants to
think about that.
7. OLTL's Tess to Nash: "Sex with you would be great...I can tell."
So regular-looking guys = bland sex?
8. We're proud of Jennifer Finnigan (ex-Bridget, THE BOLD AND THE
BEAUTIFUL) snagging the CLOSE TO HOME role, but do we have
to watch those prime-time series' promos all summer?!
9. When GL's Jonathan excused his and Tammy's hot taboo make-out
session with "we weren't really doing anything," a few
editors couldn't help but laugh. A lot of us got in trouble for "not
doing anything" back in the day, too.
10. During Nick and Sharon's latest miseryfest on THE YOUNG AND THE
RESTLESS, his telling her it's not going to be this way
forever isn't completely reassuring.
11. Poor Liz on PASSIONS. First her sister torches her nightclub, now
an earthquake levels it. What's next, a flood? Oh,
wait, actually...
12. Memo to B&B's Stephanie: Who's the schmuck now?!
For Your Eyes Only
We're working on it for next week...
Mailbag
Editorial assistant Erica Brown was shocked to find these beautiful
flowers delivered to her desk early this week. "The fans
of AMC's JR thank you for the Soap Opera Weekly chats," notes Ellyn
from Chicago. "Thanks for being so nice, positive and
informative." No, thank you!
M&M's are pouring into the office by the bagfull. DAYS fans love Matt
Ashford (Jack) and Melissa Reeves (Jennifer) and are
devoted to the Deveraux clan and they want it to be known. We are
most grateful. Too bad it's bathing suit season.
The Great Debate
Sure, GH's Kelly Monaco (Sam) is beautiful — but she also showed off
an impressive set of talents, running away with top
honors for Issue 32's Applause, Applause. Monaco did a wonderful job
portraying Sam as sympathetic to Jason's anguish. Her
gestures perfectly externalized her feelings. And her drunken scenes
were fun and flirty without being falling-down
over-the-top. Monaco understands that real drunks try to behave
straight, not goofy — they're just clumsy and...sleepy. What
could be more touching (or more symbolic of how comfortable she feels
with Jason) than nodding off in his arms? Sweet.
Listening Station
•Country band Trick Pony guest-starred as themselves on the July 26
episode of DAYS, accompanying Bonnie's two-step contest
with their hits "Pour Me," "More Like Me" and "It's a Heartache."
Nightwatch
•ROSWELL fans — and there are many who loved the romance-filled story
of half-human alien teens — will be thrilled to find a
DVD set of the sci-fi soap's third season in stores Aug. 9. The set
features several episode commentaries by the WB/UPN
series' producers, including Jonathan Frakes, whose wife, Genie
Francis (ex-Laura, GH), played the alien teens' mom.
Executive producer/writer Jason Katims' commentary over "Graduation,"
the series finale, is entertaining and enlightening.
Aside from revealing that a season's worth of story had to be
condensed into this episode, he notes the scenes were shot out
of order, and the actors had to shoot their "death" scenes (not the
touching farewell wedding)...last.
High schooler Liz and hybrid Max's roller-coaster love story pervaded
the series from the premiere, and hit a major level in
this third season, wrapped in a shocking revelation about one major
character. Shiri Appleby (Liz) notes one of the main
reasons for the series' popularity: "The relationship between the
characters...they're always there for each other,
supporting each other." The actress' favorite ROSWELL moment was the
series finale, thanks to "the excitement, and all the
emotions while we were shooting. I look back on that episode with the
fondest memories." There were behind-the-scenes moments
we didn't see: "In the last episode, Brendan [Fehr, Michael] broke
his arm, so there are certain shots where his arm is
hidden; he had a cast on."
As a bonus, Appleby is featured in a flashy, fun Japan tour segment,
of which she recalls, "It was incredible. The idea that
someone calls and asks if you and a girlfriend want to go to Japan
for a week... (laughs) It blew my mind that people were
actually watching ROSWELL [there]." This DVD set presents your chance
to see Appleby in a kimono; she participated in a
ritual that happened to be taking place during her visit.
This enjoyable 20th Century Fox package's viewers can also catch the
early work of Katherine Heigl (the fiery Isabel; now
Isobel, GREY'S ANATOMY) and Emilie deRavin (the mysterious Tess; now
Claire, LOST). Appleby says, "It was a great first
experience for all of us, getting us going; it was a blast to work
on, and to have people out there appreciate what we did."

•Join NBC's "LAW FIRM": Those suffering from APPRENTICE withdrawal
should take heed — NBC is offering something to help take
the edge off, and in THE APPRENTICE's time slot, no less. David E.
Kelley's first foray into reality programming, THE LAW
FIRM, is an intriguing look at how a bunch of type-A litigators try
to outmaneuver each other in and out of the courtroom.
Acting as their "judge" is famed trial attorney Roy Black, who
eliminates a member of the "firm" every week after reviewing
their performance in court. For Black, part of the appeal in signing
on to such a series is helping to restore the reputation
of his profession. "Lawyers have always been the butt of jokes and
criticism," he explains. "We can be very contentious
people. The worst thing is to have someone in your family who goes to
law school, because then they come home and
cross-examine you all night. It's just the personality of people and
the training that we get. We can be a royal pain in the
ass. So, nee!
dless to say, we are not the most popular people in the world. David
is a guy who really loves the law and loves lawyers, so
he and I talked about doing a show that people could see behind, not
only what happens in the court, but how they got there.
You can watch CourtTV and see real trials going on, but you don't
know what went on in the preparation phase. The great thing
about this show, it not only shows the best of the courtroom, but it
shows what they have to do to get there. Which I think
opens people's eyes. Perhaps they have a little bit more feeling for
what lawyers do." — RS
The We In Weekly
From Robert Schork: My colleague Mala and I have been shaking our
heads during the 3 p.m. hour, as we've watched GH demonize
AJ into a hateful monster and shamefully rewrite history in the
process. It's bad enough the guy is dead — talk about kicking
someone when they're down! At the rate they're going, I supposed
we'll learn during November Sweeps that AJ was the shadowy
figure spotted on the grassy knoll in Dallas.
It's My Party
Hi, Carolyn Hinsey here. I went to the premiere of the hilarious new
documentary The Aristocrats Tuesday night in NYC and was
thrilled to run into Amy Carlson (ex-Josie, ANOTHER WORLD) with Bebe
Neuwirth (Lilith, FRASIER, her co-star from LAW & ORDER:
TRIAL BY JURY) and Tuc Watkins (David, OLTL). Tuc starred on BEGGARS
AND CHOOSERS with the film's director Paul Provenza (who
is an old friend of mine) so we all had a fine time catching up and
laughing about the movie. Caution: If it is possible for
a word or an act to offend you, you should not see this film. But if
you enjoy the occasionally dirty (okay, filthy) joke and
get — or want to learn more about — what comedians do behind the
scenes, then go see this wild, raucous film.

Greetings From The Editor
Lynn Leahey
Dear Readers,
Soap actors are almost always happy to sit for a Digest interview,
and lots of them have interesting stories to tell. But few
have tales as tormented as Roscoe Born, veteran of 11 soaps and
currently doing mesmerizing work as Y&R's Terrible Tom. You
might remember back in 1997, when Born was playing Jim on AMC, he
just never showed up for work one day, taking off for Texas
instead. There was backlash and even a lawsuit, and Born recounts the
odyssey that followed with surprising candor. Now he's
back, determined to prove himself all over again. What he's already
proof of is that giving someone a second chance can be a
very wise move.
The Water Cooler
Reporting By Naomi Rabinowitz
Many soap stars have shared stories about how their exposure led to
them hearing from an old acquaintance, but I never
expected my job at Digest to make this happen for me. However, I
recently received a lovely letter from my fourth grade
teacher. I haven't spoken to her since I was in her class in 1984 — a
whole drinking age ago! — so you can imagine how
shocked I was when her letter came to me at the office. Turns out
she's a huge DAYS fan and subscribes to the magazine. She'd
seen my byline and had been wondering if it was her former student;
she knew for sure when I included a childhood picture of
myself in an "Editor's Corner." She just sent me another letter,
informing me of all of the other teachers I'd grown up with
who are also long-time soap fans. I'll admit, the kid in me, who
really didn't think about teachers having outside lives, is
having a difficult time imagining them chatting about their shows at
work. But now that I think about it, she got me addicted
to my first "soap." On the last day of school, she rewarded me and
three other students who'd gotten straight A's by taking
us to a Laura Ingalls Wilder exhibit at the local library. After
that, I became obsessed with the Little House series, which
really is a continuing drama, albeit a literary one. My love for
those books helped inspire my dreams of becoming a writer.
So, thanks to my teacher for giving me such a wonderful gift. As a
writer at Digest, I'm glad I'm finally able to keep you
informed on one of your favorite subjects.
Insider Info
Ever wonder what Digest editors talk about in the halls? Here's
what's on our minds this week.
Mike Bruno: OLTL has done a good job burying the tough, bad-boy Todd
of days past by having him get his butt kicked by
Margaret every time they tangle. Lori Latusek: How many times have
you looked at a long-ago picture of yourself and flinched,
thinking, "What was I doing wearing that way-too-dark lip-liner and
leaving the house with those hideous eyebrows?" Well, at
least we have the option of tossing, burning or throwing darts at
those unflattering photos. Soap vets, however, aren't so
lucky. So when Y&R aired a flashback of Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) and
Lauren (Tracey E. Bregman) from nearly 15 years ago, I
gasped. But once I got past their darker, bigger hair, I realized
that these beautiful actresses haven't aged one bit! If
growing more beautiful with age is the basis of sayings like, "The
30s are the new 20s," then these ladies are solid proof!
Jennifer Lenhart: An ATWT spokesperson assures us that that was NOT
Roger Howarth (Paul) pushing the baby carriage -- in
drag! -- at the end of last Friday's show, as had been speculated all
over fan Web sites this week (though we did a
double-take, too).... Is anyone else creeped out by the fact that on
ATWT, Maddie's fantasy life involves elaborate romantic
scenarios featuring her brother and his ex-wife? Devin Owens: We're
loving that B&B's Brooke has finally grown a spine (take
that, Ridge!) but my, my our usually hardy, heroine Bridget has
gotten weepy and helpless as of late. Take a cue from Ma,
girl, and if you really think Nick's heart isn't fully in your
relationship, then kick him to the curb! Brooke wasted the
best years of her youth (but she still looks damn beautiful) on a
wishy-washy beau; don't make the same mistake.
Star Sightings
Daniel Markel (ex-David Stenbeck, ATWT) at the Lakeside Country Club

Square.
Type Set
Soap fans are a vocal bunch -- see what fellow viewers are saying
about their shows.
"I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the fake kiss between
Dillon and Maxie on GH. There wasn't an inkling of
romantic chemistry between them, but it was a great set-up to
solidify two young couples the show has with Georgie and
Dillon, and Jesse and Maxie. Maxie and Jesse both want each other,
but are playing a cat and mouse game. They are a perfect
match. I can't wait until they finally get together for good. Kirsten
Storms (Maxie) and Matt Marraccini (Jesse) work so well
together. Georgie and Dillon are one of the most stable couples on
the show. Georgie's reaction to Dillon helping to make
Jesse jealous was mature and calm. Lindze Letherman (Georgie) and
Scott Clifton's (Dillon) chemistry continues to be better
than any other couple on daytime television. It was a riot watching
Georgie jump into the middle of the twin bed between
Dillon and Maxie. Though, next time there's a party in Dillon's room,
this fan hopes it's a private one consisting of only
Dillon and Georgie. This couple deserves some much-needed romance!"

What I'm Watching
By Stephanie Sloane
My current viewing obsession? LAGUNA BEACH on MTV. This soap/reality
show hybrid bills itself as the "real OC," since it
takes place in Orange County, CA, where the FOX susder is set. The
show, in its second season, is an addictive glimpse into
the lives of attractive, privileged, camera-friendly teens -- some in
their final year of high school, some who graduated
last year -- and provides just as much drama and excitement as its
scripted counterpart. Kristin, the fun-seeking bubbly
blonde who comprised one-third of last year's popular
Kristin/Stephen/LC triangle is this year's narrator. Every week, she
and her pals deal with boyfriend troubles and girl clique rivals and
take frequent shopping trips in their tony town. (Sure,
there are parents around, but they don't play as prominent a role as
Sandy Cohen does on THE OC.)
It's no surprise LB has such a strong soap hook -- it's co-produced
by Wendy Riche, the Emmy-winning one-time Executive
Producer of GENERAL HOSPITAL and PORT CHARLES. She knows how to grab
an audience.
First-run episodes run on Monday nights at 10 p.m. EST; catch a rerun
all through the week. Trust me, it's worth it.

Soap Scrambler Answer
Paul Satterfield (Spencer, OLTL)
Wasn't it just yesterday when Nikolas (Tyler Christopher) and
Courtney (Alicia Leigh Willis) were walking down the aisle with
their spouses? Today those marriages aren't nearly as interesting as
the developing tryst between these two not-so-happily
marrieds, who garnered mentions in both our Top 10 Plus and The We in
Weekly sections.

The Top 10 Plus
What Weekly editors are buzzing about...or not.
1. GENERAL HOSPITAL's boy detective Jesse and evil Dr. Thomas both
masqueraded as hospital janitors. Somewhere, there's a
closetful of unconscious, naked maintenance engineers.
2. GUIDING LIGHT's Marina is toting bikinis in case she has to go
undercover quickly? Is she training to be a cop or one of
Charlie's Angels?
3. Just weeks after Marcie puked on Hugh's shoes, did we really have
to hear ONE LIFE TO LIVE's John hurl the morning after
his bender? Ew.
4. If you're going to commit murder, do it in Port Charles. GH's
Jason killed Dr. Thomas in the Q living room, for which most
people would get 25 to life. Jason got a romantic cruise with Sam.
5. Which police chief is worse? GL's Frank, for letting Marina date
an ex-mobster and become a cop? Or GH's Mac, for cutting
off Maxie because she's dating a cop?
6. For two people who never shared any serious screen time before,
GH's Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney) and Tyler Christopher
(Nikolas) have been red-hot.
7. Marlena's amnesia has got DAYS OF OUR LIVES' John going off the
deep end. How else would you explain the fact that he
defended Kate for setting up Sami?
8. On PASSIONS, what are the odds that the coffin Katherine clutches
to save her life would be that of her dead sister,
Rachel?
9. Does PASSIONS' Chad really think he, Whitney and Miles can be a
family anywhere besides a VC Andrews book? And did he have
to look so happy about shagging his sister again? Hello, Flowers in
the Attic!
10. Even loyal supporters of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Bridget
probably found her paranoia about Nick's feelings for
Brooke a bit pathetic.

When life hands you lemons...
While sweltering in the hot summer NYC heat, we can relax with a
glass of cold lemonade in the office thanks to fans of DAYS'
Shawn and Belle. "We Shelle fans have supported our couple despite
all the angst thrown at them," shares Melissa Underwood,
one of the devotees sending in packets of lemonade.
Why We Clapped
Steve Burton blew away the competition when it came to Applause,
Applause for issue 34. It's a tough job to play a hit man
who is often considered as emotionless as he is fearless, yet Burton
consistently makes Jason sympathetic. And there was a
lot to feel for, as Jason struggled with guilt over Michael's
psychological problems. As a father figure for the youth, Jason
feared he had let the child down — but Burton never lets his fans
down. His alternately subtle and big performance was right
on target!
Listening Station
•GH's Sonny stocked Jason and Sam's yacht cabin with a radio playing
an instrumental version of Rie Sinclair's "Just You and
Me" on August 9. Now that's flexing some mob muscle!
•DAYS' Jack and Jennifer shared a bittersweet but romantic dance to
Jen and Frankie's song, Ben E. King's classic "Stand By
Me," in their living room on August 11 as Frankie imagined himself in
Jack's place.

The We In Weekly
From Tonya Lensch: Brooke barely had a chance to come up for air
after dumping Ridge, when her little Hope almost died in a
jacuzzi accident. (We're beginning to think that B&B comes up with
stories to specifically make tear-pro Katherine Kelly Lang
cry.) While it was horrifying to watch Hope struggling in the spa in
the all-too-realistic scenes, kudos to B&B for
spotlighting spa safety. "My hair got stuck," Hope said when she woke
up. Luckily she's okay because we're stuck on those
little cuties, twins Rachel and Amanda Pace, who play this precious
little girl.
From Robert Schork: Why can't GH's Jason and Sam have something else
on when they go to bed besides street clothes and
shoes?! Hasn't anyone in Port Charles ever heard of PAJAMAS? While we
don't expect Sonny's enforcer to be traipsing around in
fuzzy slippers and pastel PJs, even boxers would suffice over blue
jeans and workboots.
From Mala Bhattacharjee: As crazy and awful as OLTL's Margaret is,
was it truly necessary to have Todd try to choke her to
death while she's pregnant? On the heels of Greenlee's miscarriage on
AMC, and with GH's Courtney struggling so hard with her
inability to conceive, I actually found myself yelling, "Do it,
Margaret! Stab Todd!" when she shoved the scissors into him.
And speaking of that...Courtney's OTHER struggle — failing to keep
herself from kissing Nikolas — has been highly
entertaining. Jax's smug 'tude and obsession with Liz has editors
rooting for Nikolas and Courtney's hook-up, if only by
default. Of course, Nikolas doesn't come off looking so good in this
equation: "My raped wife hasn't been paying attention to
me. Boo-hoo, let's make out." Maybe someone will stick some scissors
in him after Courtney's finished having some fun!
