From Michael Bruno's column:
I just got back from the EMMYS my friends, and for the most part it
was a BIG BUST! Let me tell
you some of the stuff I heard.
HUNT BLOCK is OUT!!! on AS THE WORLD TURNS. I know the REAL deal
about this one and God it's a
good one, but can't print it. I get in enough trouble on this column
that I make NO MONEY
FOR. It's a big deal story wise to lose him, and I think they might
not recast. CADY MCLAIN
is definitely GONE FOR GOOD as well. This would say to me that
KELLY GIDDISH who plays 'Diana Cole' on ALL MY CHILDREN is not going
to end up being 'Dixie' and
that CADY will be back at AMC by years end. But Kelly shouldn't
worry one way or the other. This
girl is a MOVIE STAR! I sat with her, IAN BUCHANAN, MICHAEL KNIGHT
and my girl CATHERINE
HICKLAND during the Emmy dinner and was blown away by her beauty and
how cool she was. I don't
have to tell you that some SOAP STARS kind of 'don't get' where they
fall in the food chain of
HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY. (AND IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS,
CHECK OUT WHO WON THE EMMYS IN
ANY OF THE MAIN STREAM PRESS. SUPPOSEDLY ELLEN DEGENERES SWEPT THEM,
MEREDITH VIERA AND THAT
SHOW, GENERAL HOSPITAL. NO OTHER ACTORS NAMES NEED TO BE MENTIONED.)
Heard GUIDING LIGHTS' KIM ZIMMER went down to the wire on re-signing
with her show. I hope she
gets what she wants and what she deserves. I heard she REALLY put up
a fight with TPTB about the
new, 'we're not only NOT giving you a raise, but we are now going to
TAKE SOME OF YOUR MONEY
AWAY!' rule. Everyone has been forced to bend over and become KEVIN
BACON in 'ANIMAL
HOUSE' where he gets smacked on the ass with a paddle and has to
reply, 'Thank you, SIR, may I
have another!' If the BIG STARS, and there are really only maybe
three per show, start taking
these pay cuts... NO ONE has a chance!
So the dinner was the usual gab fest, with everyone NOT eating and
trying to find their friends
from other shows around the packed room. The Red Carpet was the
usual 'clogged drain' it becomes
as they herd all of us like a bunch of cattle over to Radio City. It
was interesting to see one
ALL MY CHILDREN star throw a fit when it came down from the 'booth'
that they didn't need
to interview her on camera. God, you guys have no idea! I thought my
BOBBIE EAKES did a really
good job and I thought she looked beautiful, and as I was about to
be interviewed by her, BRAD
BELL yelled 'Hello' to me from the sidelines and said to make sure
to say hello to BOBBIE. Well
BRAD, if BOBBIE doesn't get out of that Pine Valley jail soon, we'll
be saying more than HELLO
to you.
Here are my quick shocks of the night. Erica Slezak? It was GH's
NANCY GRAHN'S statue. Nancy,
call your lawyers. GUIDING LIGHTS' Tom Pelphrey loses to THE YOUNG
AND THE RESTLESS'
creepy DAVID LAGO? TOM PELPRHEY is a young TONY GEARY and should
have won. And to make matters
worse we're treated to LAGO's acceptance speech, leaving many people
putting money on what pills
Mr. Lago must have ingested. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' ERIC
BRAEDEN SCREW UP had the house in
complete... EUPHORIA!!! This must have just made PETER BERGMAN'S
Year. I was just happy to know
that someone had a BIGGER GOD COMPLEX than I have!
Blind Item #1 - This West Coast based ACTOR who WON, decided to
write his EMMY ACCEPTANCE
speech....BEFORE HE WAS NOMINATED!!!
Blind Item #2 - Secret Cheers of Joy were heard when this nominated
young actor/actress DIDN'T
win the Gold! It seems this 'little one' has turned into a real
monster with all the attention
they have gotten over this past year and now with the LOSS, they are
hoping their 'head' can
once again fit through the studio doors!

UNCLE JESSE'S GIRL
I should really just change the name of this column from "Soaps
News" to "The Shanelle Workman
Romance Report." The 27-year-old soap starlet — who plays Gabriela
on The Bold and the Beautiful
— is never without a handsome celebrity beau! Last week, you read
here that she has previously
dated American Idol 4 finalist Constantine Maroulis. Now Workman's
reportedly been seen on the
arm of John Stamos (ex-Blackie, General Hospital).
"While Shanelle acknowledges that she does know John Stamos, she
doesn't feel it's appropriate
to comment on her personal life at this time," B&B's spokeswoman
teasingly tells TVGuide.com.
Translation: Yep, she's dating Uncle Jesse. Which is great news,
because if Shanelle's going to
date someone in showbiz, she clearly wants a mature man with a
healthy perspective on fame. And
who better than Stamos, whose ABC sitcom Jake in Progress was just
renewed? Plus, as TVGuide.com
recently told the youthful 41-year-old, he looks better now than he
ever has. Hold on to this
one, Shanelle! Rebecca Romijn's loss is your gain.
ENOS EJECTED
Expect Bobby and Brittany's love story to end on The Young and the
Restless this summer. Here's
why: The show has fired Melrose Place alumnus John Enos III, who has
played strip-club
entrepreneur/bartender Bobby Marsino since 2003. "On a sad note, I
just found out I will be
leaving Y&R," Enos confirmed in a posting on his Internet message
board. "My last airdate will
be in August. Just another casualty of budget cuts. I had a great
run and I thank the producers,
writers, directors, cast and crew for making my stay the best ever!
I also thank you, my fans,
for your support."
Unfortunately, even the No. 1 daytime soap isn't immune to CBS'
drastic budget cuts. The Eye
network has trimmed $2 million off the licensing fees of each of its
sudsers, forcing them to do
some serious belt-tightening. "[Enos' dismissal] is strictly a
budget consideration," says Y&R's
co-exec producer and head writer Jack Smith. "John is a talented,
classy, professional actor and
we love working with him. This had nothing to do with John's
performance level or portrayal of
the character." Keep reading for more of the fallout from CBS' cash
slash.
GL'S "SLUT" TO STAY
Forget the soap tabs' frenzied reports that Kim Zimmer quit her
signature role as red-hot mama
Reva Shayne Lewis on Guiding Light. The self-proclaimed "Slut of
Springfield" isn't going
anywhere!
This three-time Emmy winner — who was understandably upset about the
show's 15 percent
across-the-board pay cut — had been making very loud noises about
jumping ship, despite having a
year left on her contract. Now she's seriously changed her tune.
"My heart is and always will be with Guiding Light," Zimmer says in
a statement. "I'm happy to
say that I'll be a part of the show until the end of my existing
contract — and then some." Oh?
That last titillating tidbit all but confirms talk that Procter &
Gamble compromised by working
out the salary situation to the GL diva's liking. P&G, of course,
declines to comment on
contractual matters.
REAL-LIFE LOVERS
GL costars Tom Pelphrey and Gina Tognoni are dating off screen, a
setside spy confirms to
TVGuide.com. No wonder Jonathan and Dinah's trysts are so electric.
The suds schemers' chemistry
is the real deal! (Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the
dressing-room wall when these two
are running lines?)
SHEILA RETURNS?
Soap supervillainess Kimberlin Brown (Dr. Paige Miller, One Life to
Live) may soon say sayonara
to Llanview and hello again to Y&R's Genoa City. According to Soaps
in Depth, "a high-level CBS
insider whispers" that Brown will reprise her classic role as
sociopath Sheila Carter on Y&R,
despite the character's crossover to sister soap B&B years ago.
Could the stage be set for a
revival of Sheila's deadly feud with Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E.
Bregman)? I'm salivating with
anticipation!
Country-fried songbird Bobbie Eakes (Krystal, AMC, ex-Macy, B&B)
just released a sentimental
disc of covers entitled Something Beautiful....
The Bold and the Beautiful: Last week, you read here that B&B had
finally settled on a name for
Antonio Sabato Jr.'s mysterious new Italian stallion character:
Dante di Napoli. Well, "final"
decisions were made to be changed, kids. He is now called Dante
Damiano. (Much better. I enjoy
the alliteration, don't you?) He first airs June 16.
Guiding Light: The Amazing Race 7 winners Uchenna and Joyce Agu will
make a cameo appearance on
June 15. The couple is greeted by Mayor Ross Marler and his wife,
Blake, when they pass through
Springfield. Cheesy? Sure, but just be grateful it's not Rob and
Amber.
The Young and the Restless: Look for Lyndsy Fonseca (ex-Colleen) to
costar in the Lifetime
thriller cyber seduction: His Secret Life on June 20. She plays a
high-school girl who's
distressed by her boyfriend's pervy addiction to Internet porn. Join
the club, honey.

Could This Be True?!?!?, Casting Rumor
MediaDomain
"I spoke to Vincent's fan club president today and she has just
released this wonderful,
exciting news through his monthly newsletter!
With Marj Dusay and Michael O'Leary leaving a void in the canvas, GL
has lured back Vincent
Irizarry as Nick. He and AMC are parting ways at the end of the
summer, he will be back at GL in
early fall (my speculation here: But could something happen to Alex
that requires Nick to come
home?) When negotiating his contract, GL kept the latest 15 % across-
the-board paycut in mind
and they signed him a deal acceptable for everyone."
------------------------------------
I read on another board that Jerry ver Dorn contacted his fan club
that he had decided to drop
his contract to recurring because of his ill health. I pray that his
cancer is not back, and
that those who blamed Kim Zimmer for his being dropped will feel
like fools. She doesn't have
the power to make Jerry ill and to make the decision he has made.
------------------------------------
My understanding from the note JvD sent to his fan club was that GL
will drop him to recurring
at the end of summer and that his health issues had nothing to do
with their decision. Also, I
hope we aren't starting with the Kim Zimmer debate again. I feel
that subject has been talked
out over this past week.
------------------------------------
So Far, In Order
This relates to the changes going on at GL: in brief, what has
happened, confirmed, without
going into the territory of rumor or speculation.
CBS renewed GL for 2 years (2005-2007) but with changes & with
certain provisos. They reduced
the licensing fee they pay PGP for GL per episode. PGP now has to
find a way to produce GL less
expensively & they have to do it quickly since they are already
being paid less. In early May
they had meetings & announced their plan to everyone.
They're moving to a different studio where the rent will be less.
They asked everyone, actors, tech, staff, etc. to take a 15% pay cut
across the board, to be
implemented at everyone's work cycle points.
Kim Zimmer refused to take the pay cut.
PGP kept her on, anyway.
Daniel Cosgrove will be leaving GL, probably later in the summer. He
got a pilot for a new ABC
legal drama & it was picked up as a midseason replacement. His
departure would have happened
regardless of other changes.
Marj Dusay is leaving, circa September, to travel & spend time with
grandchildren, etc.
Apparently her departure is also unrelated to these changes. (When
she came back to GL to finish
out Joan Collins run, she was literally leaving for Italy &
cancelled her vacation. She's stayed
much longer than Collins had been planned for.)
Michael O'Leary has been let go, has been taken off contract. He may
appear some as a recurring
player. Unknown when this goes into effect. But, he was in the
studio taping last week.
Jerry ver Dorn has been let go, has been taken off contract. The
show notified him June 1st.
This goes into effect at the end of the summer. He may appear some
as a recurring player.
Of note is the information that the 2 million per episode licensing
fee cut applies not only to
the PGP soaps, ATWT & GL, but also to the Bell soaps, B&B and Y&R.
"Unfortunately, even the No. 1 daytime soap isn't immune to CBS'
drastic budget cuts. The Eye
network has trimmed $2 million off the licensing fees of each of its
sudsers, forcing them to do
some serious belt-tightening." - from the item about John Enos being
let go from Y&R for
strictly budgetary reasons, http://www.tvguide.com/soaps/soapsnews/

If it's true, it will be fun to watch, as Gina and Tom have so much

that the scenes are hotter
than before.

and how he might have manipulated her.
Daniel and Lily go on the run. The scenes will be filmed at remote

Newman Enterprises and Jabot will be affected by Cassie's death in a
big way. It will involve
Victoria and will get very personal. Victor's business decisions
causes concern for Nick.
Lauren and Michael happily plan their wedding, but the ceremony

story for them to go
forward.
Bobbie and Brittany's marriage will be heartbreaking and poignant.
Other characters will be
drawn into their s/l that normally wouldn't be brought in. Even
though a mysterious stranger is
following Brittany, the drama will be less focused on the mob.

Outstanding Supporting Actress: Natalia Livingston (Emily, GH)
Outstanding Supporting Actor: Greg Rikaart (Kevin, Y&R)

Greetings From Lynn Leahey
Emmy night was filled with the usual glamour and glitches, and
Digest had a front row (well,
more like 10th row) seat for the proceedings. The dinner was, as
usual, jam-packed, though more
and more big names seem to be bowing out. For some of the nominees,
especially, it's just too
nuts — though there were still plenty of the big guns (Kim Zimmer!
Erika Slezak!) milling about,
trying to get a bite to eat (just-bumped-to-recurring Catherine
Hickland had to yell to someone
at her table, "Don't let them take my plate away!" because she was
so mobbed with well-wishers
she couldn't get to her seat.) The show itself was rowdy, with
crowds roaring for their
favorites. I always feel a little bad for the nominees who don't get
the huge cheers, but that
didn't seem to dampen anyone's enthusiam Friday night. Or affect who
brought home the
statuettes, now that I think of it. And a surprising number of L.A.-
based NBC soap stars turned
out. Considering that that network's only acting nominee was
PASSIONS's Juliet Mills, I nominate
them all for a good sport award.
We'll be bringing you full coverage of the event in a future issue,
but here's a taste of what
we saw and heard...
Reporting by Stephanie Slaone
I am a big VERONICA MARS fan, so the highlight of my night was
catching up with Lisa Rinna
(Lynn, VM; ex-Billie, DAYS), and her hubby Harry Hamlin (Aaron, VM)
as we were exiting the show
Friday night. I said to Lisa, "I can't believe he killed Lilly
Kane," referring to Harry's
character on the show, who was part of the biggest mystery of the
season. She said, "I know!
Wasn't he terrific?" He was! I hit the ABC party first. By the time
I made it there at 11:30,
Emmy-toters Eden Riegel (ex-Bianca, AMC) and Erika Slezak (Viki,
OLTL) hadn't even made it past
the entrance because they were being congratulated by so many
people. I made the rounds at ABC,
then headed over to the Waldorf-Astoria for the CBS party at around
2am. It was still in full
swing. A bunch of DAYS actors were there, including Farah Fath
(Mimi) and Alexis Thorpe
(Cassie), as well as GH's Kirsten Storms (Maxie; ex-Belle, DAYS).
Drake Hogestyn (John, DAYS)
and Alison Sweeney (Sami, DAYS) showed up around 2:50am. The always-
affable Drake was charming
the party revelers with stories and Ali was posing for photos and
signing autographs. We all
finally left at 3:35 am, after the Waldorf was flicking the lights
on and off to give us the
hint!
Reporting by Mike Bruno
It was almost hard to recognize the usually hyped-up Mark Dobies
(soon-to-be ex-Daniel) at the
Emmys dinner reception because he was so relaxed — and it wasn't
because of the wine flowing.
While a number of the OLTL stars (Kimberlin Brown, Paige, and
Melissa Gallo, Adriana, among
them) were still catching their breath after rushing to get ready
following a full work day,
Dobies was cool as a cucumber as he leaned back at his table and
said, "I'm done. No more
shooting for me." Dobies said a few kind words about his OLTL
character, and had a few
complaints about the storyline, but mostly, he was just there to
take everything in. "Oh, I
really enjoyed myself with that character. That was some great
stuff, but tonight I'm just
seeing friends, having some food and kicking back."
Reporting by Jennifer Lenhart
There were supposedly shuttle buses to the CBS party, so Mara
Levinsky, Melissa Scardaville and
I were waiting on the curb with much of the ATWT cast when Roger
Howarth (Paul), prompted by his
wife, Cari Stahler, decided to just hoof it to the Waldorf-Astoria,
only about three blocks
east. Jennifer Landon (Gwen) took off her shoes and joined them,
along with Jesse Soffer (Will).
As soon as Howarth was out of earshot, a uniformed cop standing
nearby let out a moan. "Damn,
Todd is even hotter in person!" she gushed. Meanwhile, we decided to
follow suit (by walking)
about two minutes later. On the corner of 49th and 5th, we heard
someone shrieking my name — it
turned out to be Kelley Menighan Hensley (Emily), who was taking a
pedicab (a ricshaw-like
vehicle driven by a man on a bike) with Michael Park's (Jack) wife,
Laurie, and they were
giggling like schoolgirls. "It's too bad we don't have a picture,"
laughed Hensley, so I sent
Mara over to snap a cameraphone shot. That's when Park himself
showed up (having been forced to
walk) and declared it to be the worst picture ever. As Hensley and
his wife sped away, Park
strolled across town with us, ordering us to pick up the pace so we
wouldn't get run over as he
led us across the streets. Hours later, Kelley plopped down next to
me at the party, exhausted
and ready to chat about her experience hosting CBS Online's red
carpet coverage. "We have the
best group of people on this network," she praised. "I just loved
them all."
Reporting by Mara Levinsky
For my money, I had the best seat in the house on Emmy night: The
Digest crew was seated with
the cast of AMC. It was so much fun to see who dropped by the
section during commercial breaks
to greet their Pine Valley pals, like former cast members Peter
Bergman (Jack, Y&R; ex-Cliff,
AMC) and Kathleen Noone (Edna, PASSIONS, who played Ellen) and GH's
Executive Producer, Jill
Farren Phelps, who got caught up with Michael E. Knight (Tad) and
his gorgeous wife, OLTL's
Catherine Hickland (Lindsay). After Y&R's Greg Rikaart (Kevin) won
the Supporting Actor award,
Cameron Mathison (Ryan) and Jeff Branson (Jonathan) received
consoling hugs and kisses from
Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) and Alicia Minshew (Kendall). The whole
crowd went wild when four-time
nominee Eden Riegel (ex-Bianca) took home the Younger Actress prize,
and when she returned to
her seat from the press room, she received another standing ovation
from her AMC family.
Fighting back tears, she mouthed, "I miss you all!" She was then
surrounded by well-wishers,
including Minshew, Walt Willey (Jack), fellow nominee Alexa Havins
(Babe), and Susan Lucci's
(Erica) husband, Helmut Huber. I talked to Eden after the show and
she was looking forward to a
long night of celebration — the ABC after-party, then an after-after-
party at the restaurant
owned by Alicia Minshew's beau. "I'm going to soak up every second
of this!" she promised.
Reporting by Melissa Scardaville
I attended the Emmys, convinced that GL would bring home at least
one prize. What I didn't
expect was that trophy would belong to GL's Gus and Harley who won
Irresistible Couple. I spoke
with Beth Ehlers and Ricky Paull Goldin after the show, and both
were absolutely floored that
they had won. GL fans are a passionate bunch, but when it comes to
volume, other shows usually
have GL beat. For this couple to win meant the world to Beth and
Ricky, and to the GL bunch, who
were happy to bring home one award (although they had hoped for
more!)
Reporting by Dorothy Walsh
After waiting around for the shuttle buses to the CBS party that
never showed, Devin Owens and I
joined a group including Thad Luckinbill (J.T., Y&R) and ATWT's
Alyssa Diaz (Celia) and Zach
Roerig (Casey). Y&R's new Mac, Rachel Kimsey, fell into place next
to me and started chatting.
We'd met the night before and I was instantly charmed by her down-to-
earth nature. We chatted
about her gorgeous yellow dress, joking that yellow was the new
black, since so women were
wearing the color. She filled me in on her trip to Brooklyn that
afternoon when she picked up
her jewelry for that night, and her excitement over catching a
subway series game the following
evening. At one point, we were so caught up in chatting that I
didn't notice the grates in the
sidewalk and Rachel grabbed me before my heel fell through. "I'm
being Lloyd Dobler," she
giggled, referencing John Cusack's character from 80's romance Say
Anything, as she put her arm
around my shoulder and pulled me away from the grate. We stuck
together in the beginning of the
party. I saw her meet up with Shanelle Workman (Gabriela, B&B), who
she admitted she had been
dying to see and we tried out the chocolate fountain together. It
was a treat for me to hang out
with her because she is just adorable and the nicest girl. I can't
say enough about her!
Reporting by devin Owens
The night before the Emmys, John Enos (Bobby, Y&R) threw a private
party at his night club, 17,
located in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. Many of his co-stars
(Judith Chapman, Gloria; Jeanne
Cooper, Katherine; Peter Bergman, Jack; Michelle Stafford, Phyllis,
to name just a few) were in
attendance but the soiree also attracted actors from other soaps. I
was pleasantly surprised
when Jacob Young (JR, AMC) yelled my name and gave me a big hug. You
see, I was the first
journalist to ever interview Jacob when he joined B&B to play Rick.
We had a nice chat and I was
pleased to hear that he really enjoyed not only his current daytime
role (he also played GH's
Lucky), but his life in New York (Jacob is a native West Coaster).
But color me embarrassed when
I was approached by a beautiful blonde screaming my name who I
didn't recognize right away. It
was Jennifer Finnigan (ex-Bridget, B&B), but why I had this
momentary brain freeze, I'll never
know. The only thing I can say in my defense: It was dark and I
wasn't expecting to see her.
Fortunately, I was immediately forgiven and not only did we have fun
catching up, but I also met
her fiancé Jonathan Silverman. Although the place was still hopping,
I left just after midnight
because I had a big day ahead of me: The Emmys.
May 25th
If you couldn't make it to Radio City Music Hall on Emmy night, the
second best seat to have was
in front of your computer ? as part of Weekly's private midnight
chat live from the star-studded
ABC afterparty in Manhattan. If you weren't there, here's a sneak
peek of what you missed:
Stars from ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, GENERAL HOSPITAL and
THE VIEW came to the
oh-so-trendy New York nightclub Gotham to let their hair down after
the drama-packed Emmy
ceremony at Radio City.
Amid sumptuous food, flowing drinks and a DJ spinning upbeat party
discs, Weekly coaxed your
faves over to the computer for some lively conversation. We began by
asking who they wanted to
talk to and the answer was "The Kane women!" So Weekly editor
Carolyn Hinsey tracked down Susan
Lucci (Erica, of course) for a sweet story about how excited she was
when Eden Riegel (Bianca)
won for Outstanding Younger Lead Actress.
Then came contract news, as Melissa Archer (Natalie, OLTL) broke the
news to excited Jolie fans
that she had just re-signed with the show that day. "I don?t know if
(Natalie) will end up with
John. But wouldn?t that be fun?" Archer mused.
Chatters had very direct advice for Archer's co-star, Hillary B.
Smith (Nora). "Kill that gay
husband of yours," one fan jokingly suggested. "What gay husband?"
Smith shot back innocently.
She then shared the Nora/Daniel relationship was thisclose to
exploding. When fans asked Smith
how Daniel could fool Nora for so long, she had a simple
response: "It was on the page," she
deadpanned.
This is just an advance peek at the full article, which will appear
in the June 14 edition of
Weekly as part of our expanded Emmy coverage. Enjoy!
May 27th

and Outstanding Supporting
Actor, respectively. Congratulations to all the winners, and read
more about the pre- and
post-Emmy celebrations in the It's My Party section.

The Top 10 Plus
What Weekly editors are buzzing about...or not.
1. When OLTL's Rex told Bo that they weren't "in Kansas anymore" in
the New York gay bar, it was
highly apropos on two levels ? the Judy Garland reference and 23rd
and 8th Ave. is in Chelsea,
famous for being over the rainbow.
2. The office agrees: The ultrahilarious Mario Cantone, who
regularly, riotously spoofs the
Emmys on THE VIEW, should host next year!
3. The more easily traumatized editors cringed when GH's Reese
kissed and licked Sonny's bare
chest, proving Carly wasn't alone in reeling from the umpteenth
eyeful of Sonny and another
woman.
4. No wonder "Hell House" seems like a tough prison on GUIDING
LIGHT ? where Harley is now, they
send a guy with a flashlight to handle a hostage situation.
5. Daytime's Lilys all garnered new beaus, but AS THE WORLD TURNS'
Keith might be a killer, THE
YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Daniel is an alleged one, and ALL MY
CHILDREN's Sam had better never
wear red.
6. 24's season finale was explosively amazing. Fugitive Jack Bauer's
next job? "We don't have
enough time ? or fries!"
7. There wasn't a dry eye in the house (er, office) on May 24 when
Y&R's Cassie passed away.
However, over on AMC, the saccharine nuptials were too much to bear.
In a bad way.
8. How many people got dizzy watching the aftermath of GL's prison-
bus crash? The bouncing,
reeling camerawork was intended to be edgy ? or maybe the camera
operator was just knocked loopy
by debris.
9. This year's Emmys producer was polite and informative in his "one
minute to airtime"
announcements, but it was hilarious when he told the winners to
speak briefly ? so that everyone
can say everything they want to.
10. Wouldn't GH have tugged on viewer's heartstrings more If Maxie's
transplant story featured
the real Maxie and Felicia?
11. DAYS Chloe's trails and tribulations are like a trip down movie
memory lane, from Scarface
to The Mummy.
12. Is it us or is ATWT's Cabot younger than the last time we saw
him?
For Your Eyes Only
Check back next week for more soap stories...
Mailbag
Mailbag goodies will be on display next week.
The Great Debate
The battle for Applause, Applause recognition in Issue 23 was a
tangle of young lions, with
OLTL's John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) ultimately getting the better of
Y&R's Michael Graziadei
(Daniel). When Jen was found murdered, Lavoisier showed viewers the
vulnerable core of the
usually cocky Rex. Lavoisier let fans see Rex cry and act befuddled
before hardening to the
reality of death. Meanwhile, Graziadei's Daniel was dealing with his
own brush with death
following the car accident with Cassie. Little did he suspect the
tragic fate that awaited her.
And, truthfully, the AA race wasn't quite an all-testosterone club ?
OLTL's always-excellent
Catherine Hickland was also nominated. But Rex's anguish propelled
Lavoisier to the win.
Listening Station
Other shows besides ALL MY CHILDREN had music. Really. We promise...
?On May 12, AMC mourned Aunt Phoebe and Ruth Warrick to the
classic '40s tune, "I'll Be Seeing
You." Jack and Erica were "Walkin' on Sunshine" in Boca Raton on May
18 and on May 23, the Kane
women proved that "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" when they prepped for
Erica's wedding with a spa
day. And, last but not least, the new Mr. & Mrs. Montgomery danced
and cut cake to Rod Stewart's
cover of "The Nearness of You" on May 24.
?When ATWT's Henry and Katie were on the way to Mike and Jenn's
wedding on May 20, The Killers'
"Smile Like You Mean It" was on the car radio.
?On May 24, as GL's Olivia and Harley flashed over their recent life
trauma and the transfer bus
crashed, it was to "Escape" by Hoobastank.
?A haunting arrangement of the Y&R theme song, "Nadia's Theme,"
played as Cassie flatlined on
May 24 and parents Nick and Sharon broke down.
Nightwatch
?As entertaining as DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and GREY'S ANATOMY are,
wouldn't they be even better
next season without the cloying narration? The voice-overs merely
repeat the themes of the
episodes in flowery, over-earnest (and dumbed-down) language without
adding any real value.
EVERWOOD ? already a wonderful show ? improved by orders of
magnitude this past season when
producers dumped its cornpone narration. After all, it's not like
DESPERATE or GREY'S hired
Morgan Freeman for his Oscar-winning omniscient commentary. (BTW,
DESPERATE should also dump its
predictable closing montage, which has also become tiresome.)
Besides, now that Mary Alice has
been unmasked as a murderer, who's interested in her views on
neighborhood shenanigans anymore?
?Meanwhile, back on the homestead, the ABC Family cable network will
debut its first series,
WILDFIRE, with a two-hour movie at 8 p.m. Monday, June, 20 and 11
weekly episodes to follow.
Micah Alberti, one of AMC's many Jamies-before-Justin Bruening and
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE's
Nana Visitor will co-star with newcomer Genevieve Cortese, who plays
Kris, a troubled juvenile
delinquent trying to start a new life working at a struggling family-
run ranch. Giddy-up!
?Instead of CBS airing the wedding of THE AMAZING RACE'S Rob and
Amber, perhaps they should have
considered the RACE winners Uchenna and Joyce renewing their vows.
The We in Weekly
Personal Words From Weekly Staffers
?From Joe Diliberto: The way prison transports crash, it's a wonder
that inmates ever make it to
the Big House. On the heels of last week's van crash and explosion
on ATWT, the prison bus
carrying Harley, Mallet and Lena crashed and exploded on GL. At
least ATWT's Jack cannot be
blamed for screwing up Harley's trip.
?For anyone who has yet to have their own "15 minutes of fame," a
walk down the red-carpet
gauntlet at the Daytime Emmys will give you a taste of the
limelight. The fans lining the
walkway from the Emmy dinner to the ceremony at Radio City are so
energized and enthusiastic
that they cheer and wish good luck to everyone walking the carpet,
nominee or not.
And if you REALLY want to experience virtual stardom, try walking
the red carpet with an actor ?
or two. My eardrums and eyeballs still haven't recovered from the
year I found myself
unintentionally sandwiched between GH's Stuart Damon and Stephen
Nichols, what with all the
flashbulbs going off amid alternating screams for "Alan!"
and "Stefan!" respectively.
?From Erica Brown: I'll be the first to admit that I didn't cry when
Cassie died on Y&R ? I
bawled! In fact, one of the other editors said, "Erica, you are
crying louder than her family!"
It was one of the most beautifully written, directed and acted
episodes of a soap opera I have
seen in a long time, and this is coming from someone who was never a
huge Y&R fan. They have me
hooked now. (Thank goodness for TiVo!) Between Phoebe's funeral on
AMC and this, I need to
invest in Kleenex.
It's My Party
Editorial assistant Heather Filemyr
The Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony is only two hours long, but there
is a pre- or after-party
every night of Emmy week. One perennial favorite is the reception at
the home of New York City's
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gracie Mansion, held annually the night
before the awards. Fellow
editorial assistant Erica Brown, senior editor Gabrielle Winkel and
associate editor Tonya
Lensch sampled the tasty appetizers (They held a contest to
determine which bakery would provide
the cookies!) and chatted with the stars on the mansion's expansive
lawn facing New York's East
River.
Younger Actress nominee Crystal Hunt (Lizzie, GL) confessed that she
was more nervous than
excited, while fellow nominee ? and winner the next night ? Eden
Riegel (ex-Bianca, AMC) had
arrived in New York on Monday and been going non-stop ever since.
B&B sweetie Shanelle Workman
(Gaby; ex-Flash, OLTL) had returned to the East Coast and made
straight for the OLTL studio to
catch up with her former castmates. Outstanding Supporting Actor
nominee Jeff Branson (Jonathan)
showed up with his proud AMC-loving mamma, while Natalia Livingston
(Emily, GH), who took home
the gold the following night as Outstanding Supporting Actress,
arrived with the entire
Livingston clan in tow. Zach Roerig and Alyssa Diaz (Casey and
Celia, ATWT) were thrilled about
their first Emmys.
Once again, the Mayor's reception was elected among the week?s best
bashes.
Senior Editor Gabby Winkel
Hello dear readers. What can one say about the CBS after party at
the historic Waldorf-Astoria?
Former home of Cole Porter and the Duchess of Windsor. (Unfamiliar
with those names? Google
please.) How about CHOCOLATE FONDUE FOUNTAIN! I had heard that such
things existed, but never
saw one in real life. It's really a fountain from which rich
chocolate flows and flows and
flows. Around the fountain are strawberries, marshmallows, and
cookies that you dip into the
running chocolate. It's quite incredible. But enough about treats.
Probably the most congratulated winner was Y&R's Christian LeBlanc
who went from hug to hug,
grinning from ear to ear. I was chatting with his on-screen fiancèe
Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren)
who couldn't have been happier for all the Y&R boys who took home
Emmys. The CBS daytime world
filled the main floor of the Waldorf, that included two ballrooms (I
was in the one where the
Party Girls performed such hits from my youth as the Monkees' "I'm a
Believer") and several food
and drink stations. Plus, there were lots of little tables and
couches where people could relax,
people watch and canoodle. (Though I saw none of that! I didn't stay
that late.) Watching people
dance on was fun ? Maura West (Carly, ATWT) got the party started by
strutting her stuff on the
dance floor. Later, other soapers like Kayla Ewell (in a very daring
red dress) and Drew Tyler
Bell (Thomas) took to the floor and danced until the wee hours of
the morning. The only ABC
person I saw was Walt Willey (Jackson, A!
MC), who arrived with a tiny brunette. (I later learned she's a
publicist.) Tamara Tunie
(Jessica, ATWT) arrived later in jeans, white jacket and a great
hat. (Tamara missed the Emmys
because she's starring on Broadway with that little-known actor
named Denzel Washington.) She
looked great, as always. The CBS stars say they enjoy the party
because they can see their
friends from other shows. Martha Byrne (Lily, ATWT) sat at the B&B
table talking with her West
Coast friends for a long time, while Michael and Laurie Park (Jack,
ATWT) revealed they got
three (!) babysitters that night so their three kids could get to
all their various activities
and the parents could stay out late and have some fun! As the night
wore on, NBCers like Alexis
Thorpe (Cassie, DAYS), Farah Fath (Mimi, DAYS), Drake Hogestyn
(John, DAYS) and Alison Sweeney
(Sami, DAYS) stopped by. When Kirsten Storms (Maxie, GH) showed up,
Weekly's Tonya Lensch told
her she should go up to Jack Wagner (Nick, B&B) and te!
ll him that he's her dad. (She's GH's Maxie and he played Frisco
Jones. Got it?).
Soap Opera Digest Insider
May 31, 2005
Greetings From the Editor
Lynn Leahey
Dear Readers,
In the Digest you should have right now, DAYS's Brady learns Chloe
is alive. Soon (hopefully)
you'll get our next issue, which features a soon-to-be-leaving
Kristina Wagner (Felicia, GH) on
the cover. Her last air date is June 8, and she's not the only major-
league star on her way out.
There is also a superstar who's staying put despite a very close
call: Kim Zimmer (Reva, GL),
who was set to walk if GL cut her salary mid-contract by 15 percent.
The production company
backed down and Zimmer's still on board (yay!) but budget cuts are
sure to affect other cast
members ? a show's gotta do what a show's gotta do to stay on the
air. Soaps are making
decisions that just a few years ago would have been
unthinkable; it's a whole new world out
there, and sometimes, it's not pretty.
ALL MY CHILDREN
Reporting by Mara Levinsky
Although it aired two weeks ago, I'm still getting mail from viewers
who were left breathless by
Zach and Maria's steamier-than-steamy good-bye kiss, so I thought
that you, dear readers, might
enjoy some behind-the-scenes gossip from Eva La Rue (Maria) about
her no-longer-leading man,
Thorsten Kaye (Zach). She told me that both Kaye and her previous
love interest (that would be
her real-life ex, John Callahan, who played Edmund) balk at reciting
the moony dialogue that
accompanies every grand-scale soap romance. "John would be like, 'I
can't say this ? I'll sound
like a big wuss!' And Thorsten, I've got to fight with to say
anything romantic," she chuckled.
"At least John would say some romantic things, because he knew that
the two of us were so goopy
in real life ? some of the stuff we'd say to each other was far more
cheesy than what we'd say
to each other on camera! But Thorsten won't say anything. I have to
beg him: 'Please, I know it
sounds stupid, but haven't you ever said stuff like this to Susan
[Haskell, ex-Marty, ONE LIFE
TO LIVE, his long-time love]?' He's like, 'No! I would never!' Then
I'd say, 'Well, what about
to [his daughter] McKenna? Please say something goopy! The fans will
love it, I'm telling you!'
But you know what?" she concluded. "He doesn't even have to. He just
gives you that stare and
you can't help but melt!"
AS THE WORLD TURNS
Reporting by Jennifer Lenhart
So much is changing at ATWT, and mostly with the people I had
started taking for granted! We
didn't often feature ATWT's Hunt Block (Craig) in the magazine
because as most fans know by now,
he didn't do press. That said, he's always been one of the people I
most looked forward to
talking to whenever I visited the studio. Block was incredibly
friendly to me from the moment I
met him, when I briefly covered GL (where he played Ben), always
taking the time to ask about my
life, to the point where he helped plan my more exotic vacations,
which earned him souvenirs: a
fez hat from Morocco and a traditional Ecuadorean dough figurine. I
could always count on him to
keep me company when other actors weren't around ? even when it was
clear that he was busy
himself. It drove the publicist crazy (as much as she enjoyed him,
he was taking time from the
actors who did press), but it always made me feel more comfortable.
The only problem I ever had
with the no-press rule is that I knew he'd make a fantastic
interview, and it's too bad some
fans didn't get to see what he was really like. To that end, here's
one of my favorite
descriptions of him, from Maura West (Carly): "He's a very
intriguing guy. Honestly, that's the
first thing I thought when I met him: This is a smart, intriguing
guy. Smart people get my
juices going, and he's definitely very bright, and infuriating and
delicious all at the same
time. Infuriating is too strong a word, because that's anger and he
never creates anger.
Frustrating is a better word for him. He's great ? crazy in a good
way."
ONE LIFE TO LIVE
Reporting by Naomi Rabinowitz
At Digest, we hear from plenty of fans about what they like and
don't like about their favorite
shows. It's always interesting, though, to see what captures the
attention of non-soap watchers.
Recently, my childhood friend, Lani, came to stay with me for the
Memorial Day weekend. Lani
doesn't watch much TV, and kind of rolled her eyes when I turned on
SOAPNet to catch up with the
ONE LIFE TO LIVE episodes centering around Daniel Colson's
arrest. "God, do we HAVE to watch
THAT?" Lani moaned. "Yes, it's for work," I snapped (believe me,
I've used this excuse more
times than I can count to get control of the remote!). "Besides," I
told her. "You might
actually like this; it's an interesting week." Sure enough, Lani
soon quit complaining and had
plenty of questions for me about life in Llanview. "Who's that?" she
asked, when Tuc Watkins
(David) appeared on screen. "He's HOT. And funny. Why is that blonde
girl [Jessica/Tess] talking
to herself? Did that guy with the floppy hair [Todd] once have an
affair with the tiger lady
[referring to Dorian wearing a leopard print]? Because they seem to
have a lot of good 'hate'
chemistry."
Okay, so Lani had a LOT to learn about the show. Still, she had
definite ideas of which
storylines kept her entertained (David and Dorian were her favorite;
she also liked their scenes
with Viki and Kelly), and which bored her (the custody battle
between Antonio and RJ). When I
asked her why D&D were her top pick, she explained that "they were
the most funny and romantic.
A lot of the other stories were kind of depressing."
This goes along with what we're always saying about soaps striking a
balance between drama,
romance and comedy. In OLTL's case, some of the funniest actors in
the business are in that cast
(Watkins, Robin Strasser, John-Paul Lavoisier, Rex; Ilene Kristen,
Roxy), yet the show has had
several murder storylines within the last year. If ONE LIFE lightens
up, it might be able to get
some more people watching ... and in the meantime, I'm still going
to work on "converting" Lani.
Behold, love betrayed: In these scenes, ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Mark
(portrayed by Matt Cavenaugh)
finds out he's been burned by lover, liar and murderer Daniel
(portrayed by Mark Dobies). He
didn't win Applause, Applause, but Cavenaugh caught our attention
enough to get a a
more-than-honorable mention. Read more about his performance in our
The We In Weekly section.

The Top 10 Plus
What Weekly editors are buzzing about...or not.
1. Somehow, we don't think THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Kevin and
GUIDING LIGHT's Jonathan will
be picking up ties for Terrible Tom and Nasty Nate (see portrayer
Ritchie Coster, right) for
Father's Day.
2. The best thing about Taylor's return on THE BOLD AND THE
BEAUTIFUL: her touching reunions
with family and friends. The worst thing: her not budging in
her "negotiations" with Brooke for
Ridge.
3. GENERAL HOSPITAL's Lucky fans wouldn't mind watching him paint in
a tank top once a week.
4. May was not a good month for guys named Daniel (see: ONE LIFE TO
LIVE and Y&R).
5. Someone should give DAYS OF OUR LIVES' accident-prone Jack a
helmet.
6. Tums may not be a P&G product (yes, we checked), but that didn't
stop Weekly editors from
roaring (and groaning) during Henry's oh-so-obvious product
endorsement on AS THE WORLD TURNS
May 31.
7. Kevin's having the time of his life scaring Gitta to death on
Y&R, so why is Gloria the one
getting paranoid?
8. Suspending reality for the sake of drama took on a whole new
meaning when DAYS' Belle was
able to contact Philip by cell phone while he was inches away from a
minefield.
9. After everything he's lived through — bombings, shootouts,
murders — it's amazing that GH's
Michael hasn't been committed, let alone gone to therapy.
10. The touching conversation between OLTL's Bo and Matthew on June
1 (about prejudice and Mr.
Colson) was a great example of how soaps can educate without hitting
the viewer over the head.
For Your Eyes Only
Check back next week for more soap stories...

Mailbag goodies will be on display next week.
The Great Debate
Susan Flannery (Stephanie, B&B) routed contenders Kathy Brier
(Marcie, OLTL) and Sharon Case
(Sharon, Y&R) for Applause, Applause honors in issue 24. Flannery's
performance brought new life
to the hoary soap cliché of meeting a character who has returned
from the dead (in this case,
Stephanie's beloved daughter-in-law Taylor). Flannery was
masterfully effective in conveying
Stephanie's fear that son Ridge was crazy for babbling about seeing
Taylor, and Stephanie's
journey from skeptic to believer was measured and believable —
especially the way she kept
pawing at Taylor to make sure she wasn't a ghost. If this tired
story could always be handled as
well as Flannery and B&B did here, fans might not mind the plot
rehash. As for Y&R's Case, see
next week!
Listening Station
Some of this week's music is happy; some is sad. It's a regular iPod
shuffle in Soapburbia.
•On May 27, The Pretenders promised "I'll Stand By You" as AMC's
Maria and Zach and Ryan and
Greenlee couldn't stand by each other.
•OLTL's Riley and Nora were left shattered by Daniel's downfall and
Marcie, Michael, Lindsay,
and Rex picked up the pieces at Jen's memorial to the tune of
Seether's "Broken" on May 27.
•ATWT's Paul and Emily danced with danger as Trisha Yearwood
sang "Harmless Heart" on their
"date" at Mabel's Red Hots on June 1.
•On June 2, GL's Cassie and Edmund, Bill and Olivia, and Gus and
Harley were featured in a
montage set to Westlife's "Swear It Again."
•Mr. Mister urged Daniel to take his and Lily's "Broken Wings" and
learn to fly again on June
2's Y&R and then Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is"
accompanied their bittersweet dance.
Nightwatch
•With the traditional broadcast TV season over, it's time to switch
over to basic cable on
Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT to catch the best cop show around: FX's THE
SHIELD. Each week star
Michael Chiklis proves why he won the lead actor Emmy in 2002 as Vic
Mackey, a conflicted
crooked cop with a conscience who cannot quite keep himself clean.
Just when it looks like he's
back on the straight and narrow, he steps off the path into the dark
world of corruption again.
The raw, realistic dialogue and partial nudity help convey a deep
sense of perverted place,
putting the viewer right down in the mean streets with Vic, his
strike team and the other
assorted strange and downright creepy denizens of Farmington. The
episodes are counting down to
the June 14 season finale, but there's still time to join the
runaway train before...it hits the
fan. Watch for Oscar-nominee Glenn Close as a police captain trying
to ride shotgun over a
neighborhood — and a precinct — rapidly circling the drain. !
The We In Weekly
Personal Words From Weekly Staffers
•From Joe Diliberto: GL demonstrated on May 27 why real-life news
organizations never (ever)
release "tentative" identifications of accident fatalities —
especially before families are
notified: because they could be wrong. Just as the erroneous report
of Harley's demise was. And,
come to think of it, with no reporters at the scene, where did the
TV station get the incorrect
information, anyway? A roadside blog?
Why does AMC's Greenlee think Ryan would make a "wonderful"
father? "Ryan needs children," she
whined. What is it about him that screams Daddy? Is it the way he
tends to hop on his motorcycle
and hit the road when the going gets tough? Is it his recklessness?
His bull-headedness? His
problem with rage? His violent streak? His fear that Lavery men are
predisposed to solving
problems with fists or weapons? The shame he feels about his
lineage? Not exactly Father of the
Year material.
•From Tonya Lensch: Wow, it was awfully nice that ATWT's Lisa not
only let Gwen borrow a dress
from her store for the prom but allowed them to sleep at the
Lakeview the night before prom so
they could decorate. But, since Casey is her grandson, couldn't Lisa
have sprung for an actual
hotel room and not make them spend the night in sleeping bags in the
lobby?
My jaw hit my desk when B&B's Stephanie asked Brooke to give her son
RJ to Ridge so he could
raise him with his other wife, Taylor. (This from the woman who kept
Ridge's paternity a secret
for years.) We always new Stephanie hated Brooke, but this rivalry
has reached new heights — or
should we say lows?
•From Mala Bhattacharjee: OLTL's May Sweeps fallout has kept senior
editor Gabby Winkel and me
on the edge of our seats, and though everyone involved in the Daniel
storyline has been
Applause, Applause-worthy (Catherine Hickland, Hillary B. Smith,
John-Paul Lavoisier...need I go
on?), we want to give props to Matt Cavenaugh for his earnest,
emotional portrayal of Mark
Solomon. Mark confronting Daniel in jail was so heartfelt. Seeing a
hopeless romantic turn into
a cynic in a matter of seconds...? Ouch! Thanks, Matt, for reminding
us that Nora's not the only
one Daniel used and abused.
It's My Party
Copy editor Marc Wilkofsky
THE APPRENTICE 3 is in the books, and Kendra Todd celebrated her win
with a hopping party after
the live finale at Times Square's Planet Hollywood.
"I never doubted my ability to stand here tonight, from the day I
was in the casting call,"
Kendra noted. Amid the mashed potatoes and fixin's served in martini
glasses, runner-up Tana
also met thrilled fans. While continuing to whoop-whoop it up (a
trait Trump told reporters he
frowned upon), she called Trump a "great man, [but]...he wasn't
smart enough to hire me, so
maybe my opinion of him has changed." Her advice for the A4
candidates? "Don't do it!"
Despite the fine buffet and open bar, the night was all about boogie-
ing. With all the
pulse-pounding music, I couldn't help but join a Macarena led by
first-season villainess Omarosa
— whose publicist praised my moves — and danced to Beyoncé and Bee
Gees songs with A3 candidates
Tara and Danny (the lovable songwriter, who was flanked by women).
Bren, his medium-length hair
slicked onto his forehead, said he believes his gay-themed Dove body
wash commercial will one
day show up in Europe.
Look for more from the $250,000 winner and her new boss to show up
in Weekly, and look back at
the full APPRENTICE 3 season on our Prime Time page.
