Can somebody from cablevision please explain to me why I shouldn't
dump your service and get a dish.
Aside from OOL, I can't see a single reason to stay with cablevision.
I live in Dix Hills. From what I hear Digital Service is being
introduced in Western LI? Whatever that means. I got a card last week
asking if I was inerested. I then got a detailed mailing today. I
called them asked a few questions and signed up for installation in a
week.

Can I ask where you're located?
Is there any info available as to what locations are going to get
DTV? I've visited the CV web site and put my Zip in but no mention of
DTV.
I remember waiting a year or two for Optimum in Long Beach (used to
trail the Cablevision trucks so I could ask the driver when it was
coming <g>). Now I'm in Great Neck and have found a place that is
behind even LB. Probably will arrive when I'm ready for the Home.

Well I just took the plunge and signed up for Digital Cable. Will be
installed week after next.
Additional cost above current cable cost for complete package;
$19.95/month for the first year, then $29.95/month thereafter. This
plus additional $5.95/month for each box. If you have any TV's that
are not connected with the new box they remain as analogue TV!
Services:
1- Movies on demand.
2- Mag Rack.
3- Interactive MSG sports.
4- scores, news, weather and traffic on demand.
5- PhotoNet TV.
6- Digital quality video and audio.
7- Many more channels (4 additional HBO and more).
8- 40 commercial free digital music channels.
9- On screen programming guide.
10-E-Mail on the TV screen.
There is also a 30 day money back guarantee.
Are the walk in centers already doing box swaps for the digital
sets??? And will I be able to use both digital and conventional
service on the same line? I have 1 main splitter going to my living
room tv and then the cable modem. the living room splits off to the
bedrooms. I'd rather not put digital boxes on all 3 tv's. hmmmm.
thanks guys

Cablevision To Launch New Boxes & will offer range of interactive services
By Harry Berkowitz
Newsday Staff Writer
Starting tomorrow, half a million Cablevision customers on Long Island can begin
installing a new box that turns their TV set into a combination home-video
store, e-mail
machine and commercial-free radio.
Cablevision's long-delayed new digital set-top box will also offer between 20
and 35 extra
cable channels, ranging from women-oriented Oxygen and children-focused Toon
Disney to
ESPN Classic and BET on Jazz.
But the company faces challenges in launching the long-planned service, called
Interactive
Optimum, or iO, at a time when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and depressed
stock market
and economy have slowed consumer spending, analysts say.
Also, some features the company had hoped to include from the start -- such as
Internet-based phone service, instant messaging, shopping via remote control and
the
TiVo-like ability to instantly pause or record programs on a hard drive -- won't
be
available for many months and face uncertain levels of demand, analysts say.
Cablevision is charging $9.95 per month each for video-on-demand service, e-mail
or 45
audio-only music channels. It is charging $14.95 for just the extra cable TV
channels, on
top of the $38.75 or more that Cablevision customers pay for a standard
"family,” or
Optimum, cable package.
In comparison, Time Warner Cable charges $9.95 extra for its digital service in
New York
City, which includes 40 extra cable TV channels and 40 music channels, but which
does not
yet offer video on demand or e-mail.
But Cablevision is hoping customers will be dazzled enough by its features to
choose the
full package of them at a cost of $29.95 per month, or $19.95 per month in the
first year
for those who order by Dec. 31. There is an additional charge of $5.95 per month
for each
box, built by Sony Corp. of America, compared with $3 for the analog box it
replaces.
"The way in which our customers watch television is about to change,” said Pat
Falese,
senior vice president of consumer product management at Bethpage-based
Cablevision Systems
Corp., which expects iO to stem defections to satellite TV service.
For instance, video on demand customers will be able to choose from more than
100 movies
and play each at any time within a 24-hour period, then pause, rewind or
fast-forward them
repeatedly during that period. Even that service faces stumbling blocks,
however, because
many film studios -- demanding a big cut of the revenue and fearing video piracy
-- have
resisted providing recently released movies for VOD use.
Cablevision said it has signed deals with three studios it declined to identify
and is
negotiating with others. Some recently released VOD films include "Pay It
Forward,”
"Pokemon 3,” "Blow” and "Swordfish.” Those cost $3.95 each, although some older
films are
included in the service at no extra charge.
Digital subscribers who order premium channels such as HBO, Showtime or Cinemax
will get
up to 15 extra versions that repackage the programs of those channels under
themes such as
comedy or action.
In addition, VOD customers will be able to order various programs from premium
channels
such as HBO and Showtime to watch at any time at no extra charge. And
Cablevision's
Rainbow programming unit will provide specialty videos on topics ranging from
motorcycles
and wine to birdwatching, Catholicism and weddings. Adult films won't come until
later.
Another feature allows subscribers to call up sports scores, news headlines,
games such as
blackjack or local weather and traffic at any time.
Cablevision is the last of the nation's nine biggest cable operators to launch
digital
set-top boxes, which are in more than 13 million homes nationwide. But its
version is more
advanced than what most other operators offer, and it hopes it can add on lots
of
elaborate features without replacing the Sony box.
That new box is slated to replace analog boxes in all 3 million Cablevision
subscriber
homes in the New York metropolitan area over the next 31/2 years, including
homes that
don't order the services. First up are 550,000 homes in most of Nassau County
and parts of
Suffolk County.
Gearing up for the service has been enormously expensive for Cablevision, which
is
spending $2 billion for new fiber-optic cable lines and $1 billion for the Sony
boxes,
which cost $350 each, compared to the $200 most cable companies pay for
less-advanced
boxes.
"I'm not sure the additional investment in the box is really worth it,” said
Aditya
Kishore, a media analyst at the Boston consulting firm Yankee Group. "A lot of
the next
generation of interactive TV services have unproven revenue models.”
Further complicating the outlook for its new service, Cablevision has chosen to
provide
its own on-screen program guide rather than the interactive guide that
Gemstar-TV Guide is
selling to most cable operators. Falese said that approach gives the company
more control
over the features and look of the guide, but Gemstar is ready for a fight.
"Cablevision is planning on offering their valuable customers what we consider
to be a
poorly conceived IPG that was clearly designed by lawyers in an attempt to work
around our
patents,” Gemstar co-president Peter Boylan said during a recent earnings
teleconference
with analysts. "We remain confident that this cannot be done without a
disastrous user
experience.”

Does anyone know if the e-mail that is supposed to be part of the CV
Digital will use the same e-mail address as we have with OOL - if we
ahve OOL internet?
I drive past a Cablevision center everyday, but had to go to WIZ to
get the OOL. Is the same likely to apply to Digital - not available
at CV stores? I am in W. nassau, so hoping I get to see the package
soon. Other than wanting to get News 12, DirecTV is getting closer
to reality for me. I hope CV can compete - especially interested in
the FOX, MLB & NBA packages DTV offers. I wonder if CV will?
Hmmm...$30 extra a month just for the privelage of being "forced" to
the digital box? Every CV news article/press release I've read so
far has indicated that getting the digital box and service wouldn't
cost extra. I think that you'll be able to "grandfather" your old
plan for a while with the new boxes, but you won't get any of the new
channels being added and maybe some of the other features. But I'm
sure CV is banking on the fact that no one who goes out to the Wiz to
get a new box is going to walk away without subscribing to a new
package.
Personally, I'm paying close to $60/month (including taxes and
equipment rental fees) for JUST OptimumTV + HBO, so I'm hoping that
for somewhere under $75/month I can get the digital service with some
multiple premium channels thrown in (like 8 HBOs, 10 Starz, etc).
And I do think CV will make a ton of money off of VOD, shopping,
etc., which is why they can give the boxes away.
I'd also like to have the HBO VOD service I've been reading about as
well.
Comcast only charges $75 for their top level of digital service. I
know I keep blowing the comcast horn (honest, I don't work for them
or hold stock!), but I am amazed at how quickly they are able to roll
out services compared with Cablevision. Maybe if they spent a
little less on sports teams.....
Cablevision does seem to lead comcast in broadband (once it gets to
you), but they offer more options such as addition IP's servers, etc.

.. so this indicates that we're to pay $30 additional for the new digital
service ON TOP of whatever package we have now, minus a discount of the
current package's cost which WON'T approach the $30 premium. Thus far I'm a
bit put-off by the cost. I was really hoping that the additional revenue
they were expecting to generate would NOT be derived from monthly access
fees but rather more PREMIUM services and PPV events.

Here is the info I got so far. ( All Subject to Change )
Launch Date is soon, maybe as soon as Sept 28,2001
Price will be $30 a month for the Digital package..
If you have OPTIMUM GOLD ($79), you will get a 20% Discount on it,
if you get the DIGITAL SERVICES..
All Encoded ( Analog Scrambled ) Channels will be
duplicated on the DIGITAL SERVICE.
The SONY Digital Box will NOT be able to Decode ( DE-SCRAMBLE)
the Analog Scrambled Channels.
Enjoy,
Keith

You can get that on DirectTV and DishTV now.
Why wait 3 years to get it from Cablevision?

Majority opinion on the Tivo forum
(http://www.avsforum.com/ubbcgitivo/Ultimate.cgi) is that the
ReplayTV will never be released in its current iteration due to its
potential use as a copyright violator - imagine taping a movie off
HBO, then sending it to a friend - putting Sonicblue (the present
owner of ReplayTV) on the receiving end of a massive lawsuite, which
they can ill afford. Yes, you can do it now with video tapes, but it's
not as convenient (think of Napster - people were copying CDs long
before it came out, but Napster made it so much easier).
The one feature I see missing from all the news on the new Sony box
is PVR functionality. Given the recent ReplayTV news (see link and
beginning of press release below), perhaps CV is willing to let 3rd
parties like Tivo and ReplayTV devolop & market products like this,
as DirecTV does.
[Note: I alwyas liked the idea of Tivo but always wondered how you
could share what you recorded -- I guess broadband email is the
solution. But I'm sure the files are small and won't cause any
network congestion ;) ]
What other features should CV consider in the future (aside from
email, VOD, interactive menu, etc.)? Any suggestions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SONICblue Introduces 1st Broadband Digital Video Recorder: the
ReplayTV 4000
New Home Media Server Stores Up to 320 Hours; Allows Users to Share
Content within the Home and with Friends
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sept. 5, 2001 – ReplayTV changed home
entertainment forever with the introduction of the first digital
video recorder (DVR) in 1998, allowing consumers to pause live
television. Now, SONICblueTM (Nasdaq: SBLU) is giving consumers even
more control. The company is launching the first home-networked DVR,
a revolutionary product with broadband connectivity that lets
consumers store up to 320 hours of television or other media, share
video clips between rooms in the home or with friends outside the
home, as well as playback recorded programs without commercials. The
world's first home video server, the ReplayTV 4000 can also be
used
to store photos and home movies.
SONICblue's new ReplayTV 4000 models connect to a cable modem or
DSL for fast and easy transferring of video over broadband and can
share video throughout the house via a home network.

My honest opinion is that they have waited to long to roll out
digital cable. As I drive around the Island and ride the LIRR every
day, its amazing how many people now have a dish on there roof. They
say the will be competing with Dish and DSS and have more to offer,
ie local programming and now the latest is News12.
Well I for one am down grading to basic cable, no more cable boxes
and very expensive HBO, Starz, even Disney is a premium channel on
Cablevision and switching to Dish for my Americas 150 package. Yes I
need a box, but I do with cable. But for $40 a month you get a few
Disneys and several movie channels, also Fox sports.
I think its going to be very interesting how thing pan out and they
structure there pricing plans.
Just my 2 cents on there TV service,,,,,,,,,, now there online
service, well its awesome, I have it, I love it, I'll keep it.

Well, It's really logical to start out in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Cablevision's HQ/Server's are all in Hicksville, and A lot of the
tech's like Rick are located in Woodberry. It would be easiest for them
to start out testing, etc. in the local area, because most of the tech's
are all on the system they are operating on. So they could get instant
feedback on how it's working. Also they don't have to send the data
across to other far away :) places, which throws another situation into
the mix. Once they get the system working in place, then they will
start the spread it out further after time.
The main for the delay in the time, well, what they said it was, was the
support staff, and probably the field tech's needed to be trained on how
to support the system, and how the general infrastructure works.

I've read that the rollout will be announced w/in the next few
weeks...looks like it is going to start on Long Island...I'm in CT,
so I don't expect to see my Sony box until next year at the earliest
(weep, weep).
Note to Chuck Dolan: if this gets delayed again I'm heading straight
to Circuit City and getting a dish!
