Hello whoever you are.  I've been a huge fan of this wonderful series from the first time I saw it play on our local public television stations in Maryland.  I'm kind of like you as well.  I don't have a particular character that I like any better than the other.  They are all such genius' that it is extremely hard and to my way of thinking impossible to say one is better than the other one.  It is rare when you get a group of actors that are as excellent at their craft as this wonderful group are.  When you have a show that can successfully run for more than two or three seasons at most is an indicator that it is worthy to view.  I have begun to go thru my entire collection of both series of AYBS? and AYBS Again? and the movie.  At first when I began watching Grace and Favour, I wasn't exactly crazy about the new additions to the cast but, after many times of re-watching it, I've begun to appreciate the comedic talent of Mr. Moulterd/Billy Burden and the delightful Fleur Bennet/Mavis Moulterd.  I'm still not crazy about Jessica Lovelock tho.  I thought it was delightful that they had two episodes that had a supernatural bent to them.  It was really cute to me how they worked it in.  I wish they could have done something like that when they were in the store.  They could have done all sorts of different themes with "haunted" store.  Oops, gave away another one of my enthusiasms, the supernatural!

However, I had to write you when I saw your handle.  My husband is an ex-submariner and he rode the USS Scamp SSN 588 from 1975 to 1980.  He was an A-ganger MM2(SS) and his name is Charlie Schmitt known on the boat as Schmitty (as there were more than one Charlie on board at the time).  I don't know if you have popped on to the dear old boat's website or not but here's the link:  www.uss-scamp.com.  Lou Minor the webmaster has a lovely sound bite of her screws turning.  I'm sorry Minki I hope I didn't do a faux pas here but I was so excited at possibly finding another old crew mate of my hubby's.  I didn't copy the link from the website, I typed it in myself.

By the way, I'm still numb over the loss of our beloved Wendy Richard/Miss Brahams.  We lost her almost at the same time that we lost one of our beloved dear friends on 11 February from cancer as well.  He was diagnosed as having cancer in every organ of his body and his brain.  He had spent Yule/Christmas in hospital having comprehensive tests run.  He called me when we got back from visiting my family on 28 December and told me the news.  We were heartbroken.  We got a final visit from him on 31 January 2009 and he crossed over on 11 February 2009 shortly after midnight.  We were delighted that he was not forced to have to endure a long period of suffering thru horrendous pain and sickness from a whole bunch of drugs that wouldn't have done him any good at that point any way so they didn't even try that route.  After losing another beloved character John Inman/Mr. Humphries, a couple years ago now, the acting world has had a hard blow inflicted on it.  One of my other beloved actors, Jerry Orbach died from cancer too.  I do wish they would really knuckle down and try to figure out how to get rid of this damn disease.  I am so tired of seeing too many of my friends and family die from various forms of it.  My Mum suffered thru five years of horrible pain and misdiagnosis with colon cancer.  I keep saying lots of prayers for them all and their families that are still devastated from their loss and the people they didn't even personally know.  I got a little wordy here sorry about that but I'm still missing them all and my Mum and friend.

Well, even though they bring us AYBS as well as a handful of other Britcoms, it is a fact that PBS is part of the federal government well, at least they are heavily funded by them and they have a very liberal connection so getting money is a high priority.

It used to be played nightly on PBS, now only on Saturday, 2 shows...here in Ohio. and w/this analog change, the channel don't come in anymore, even WITH the new box thing.
I too taped the episodes, but they are gone now. I loved to watch them every night.

I think it is so sad that all the great actors that portrayed those great characters have passed away with the exception of Capt Peacock (Frank Thornton) and Mrs Slocumbe (Molly Sugden).  I am also upset that I do not get it here in South Kentucky.  I have quite a few episodes on tape and enjoy watching them.  Just proves that comedy does not need cursing or grabbing body parts to be funny.  That show had the best sexual innuendos without saying a word.

Vicki:  I'm sure you've gotten the answer already from all of these posts :)  But here goes...the following main cast members are deceased:  Alfie Bass (Mr. Goldberg), Arthur Brough (Mr. Grainger), Harold Bennett (Young Mr. Grace), Arthur English (Mr. Harman), James Hayter (Mr. Tebbs), John Inman (Mr. Humphries), Benny Lee (Mr. Klein), Debbie Linden (Old Mr. Grace's Secretary), Larry Martyn (Mr. Mash), Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms), Milo Sperber (Mr. Grossman), and Kenneth Waller (Old Mr. Grace).

You can find more information about who's alive/dead, especially about the lesser cast members, at the AYBS IMDB site:  http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0068040/
There you can also find out what projects some of the survivors are working on.

As for who's doing what amoing the survivors:  I know Frank and Trevor are on Last of the Summer Wine and Nicholas Smith is still acting.  Candy Davis has retired into private life.  Mollie...I'm not sure exactly what she is up to but she is still alive.

Carole:  the problem with BBC America is that they're trying to remain current.  They received a lot of flak from viewers about having too much old British programming--that unfortunately includes AYBS, KUA and other classics.  They also received a lot of flak for not having variety--such as when BBC America went through that "Changing Rooms" and DIY-show phase that lasted over a year.  To add to it, BBCA has to cater to advertisers--not our wishes--and keep them happy since the channel is not covered under the BBC license fee.  So now they're trying to show more of the current BBC stuff and keep a good variety to keep the ratings up.  It's a shame though, becuase I miss the old BBC.  You could try a petition--you'd have nothing to lose!--but sadly, the odds are against you.  Especially since the EastEnders fans tried mounting a campaign, petitions, etc. to bring EE back on the station and while it generated a lot of publicity, it didn't work.  At least it didn't work on BBCA:  Dish network ended up picking up the show instead.

Sue:  no harm done, so don't worry about it.  We're Navy too; I can relate.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother -- mine passed away in '97 from complications of Parkinson's and my Dad in '84 from lung cancer.  I was devastated to hear about John Iman and of course, Wendy, especially when she had beaten it a few times already.  It is a insidious disease and they should find a cure for it by now.
I don't get AYBS here in Kentuckyn -- wish I did.  I love that show and all it implies -- and loved AYBS again with the Moultards.  Mavis really loved Mr Humphries and it was funny when Mr Moultard admitted that he had been "with" Mrs Slocumbe during the war.  Great shows.
Take Care.

Taks for the info on the departed cast members.  So sad -- every name I read I could see their faces perfectly as if they were right in front of me.  I could always request DVD's for my birthdays and Christmas.  They still show Keeping Up Appearances on BBCA on Sunday nights here and Summer Wine, along with a few other British shows.  I do wish they would bring back AYBS .

You can find more information about who's alive/dead, especially about the lesser cast members, at the AYBS IMDB site:  http://uk.imdb. com/title/ tt0068040/

They received a lot of flak from viewers about having too much old British programming- -that unfortunately includes AYBS, KUA and other classics.  They also received a lot of flak for not having variety--such as when BBC America went through that "Changing Rooms" and DIY-show phase that lasted over a year.  To add to it, BBCA has to cater to advertisers- -not our wishes--and keep them happy since the channel is not covered under the BBC license fee.  So now they're trying to show more of the current BBC stuff and keep a good variety to keep the ratings up.  It's a shame though, becuase I miss the old BBC.  You could try a petition--you' d have nothing to lose!--but sadly, the odds are against you.

Yes it was sad to see so many of our much loved characters on the dead list.  We like to think of them continuing to act in the shows that made them so loved.  Maybe they are acting in their own version of AYBS? and Grace Brothers on the astral plane.  I can't remember now who the first cast member I read about passing away I think it was Mr. Harmon.  He had done an episode of Magnum PI back in the 80's when that show was hot as either a sort of shady PI that Magnum had to occassionally use for info or one of his other not so legal informants that he had to use.  I don't remember which now it's been a long time since I've seen that episode and I don't remember which season it was on any more.  I just remember that it was Mr. Harmon and my hubby was all excited that he recognized Mr. Harmon on there.  In fact he told me it was Mr. Harmon and I'm like go on he's not on Magnum PI.  He was going yea yea it's Mr. Harmon.  Funny the things we remember them for at times.

Our PBS stations in Maryland continue to run the old britcom favorites on Saturday nights as well.  In fact, it is the one thing that I look forward to on the telly.  I am not impressed with much of what telly has to offer in the states any more.  For me curling up on the couch with my much loved britcoms on Saturday is the treat that I look forward to all week.  When our PBS stations run their almost continual begathons, it is the britcoms that seem to bring in the most money in the pledge breaks.  I know I have quite a few collectible items of AYBS? that I got as premium gifts for donating.  We have had Mr. Humphries, Mrs. Slocumbe, Captain Peacock and Miss Brahams host various sessions of the begathons over the years.

Unfortunately Minki is quite correct.  Stations have to rely on advertisers in order to raise their revenue and that is all they are interested in is that money.  They really do not care whether the public appreciate the shows they offer or not.  The last time I remember petitioning stations to keep running a favorite show that worked was the original Star Trek and then it only lasted for three seasons.  Nowadays, it is what show will bring in the most advertising dollars.  The heavy reliance on advertising dollars has caused the early demise of many a fine show in my opinion.

Take Care.

I don't know if you have popped on to the dear old boat's website or not but here's the link:  www.uss-scamp. com.

I know what you're saying and it is a shme that the almighty dollar runs the whole show.  It is gone the way of the dodo bird -- what people want and what the stations think they want are too different things.  Look at the shows on TV -- yes, some are very good and others are OK and then their is cable -- some stations show the same movies over and over and over again -- there were lots of movies over the years, but no, they pick one and it is on all weekend and the same again in thenext few weeks.
Very sad indeed.

Vicki:  I'm sure you've gotten the answer already from all of these posts :)  But here goes...the following main cast members are deceased:  Alfie Bass (Mr. Goldberg), Arthur Brough (Mr. Grainger), Harold Bennett (Young Mr. Grace), Arthur English (Mr. Harman), James Hayter (Mr. Tebbs), John Inman (Mr. Humphries), Benny Lee (Mr. Klein), Debbie Linden (Old Mr. Grace's Secretary), Larry Martyn (Mr. Mash), Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms), Milo Sperber (Mr. Grossman), and Kenneth Waller (Old Mr. Grace).

You can find more information about who's alive/dead, especially about the lesser cast members, at the AYBS IMDB site:  http://uk.imdb. com/title/ tt0068040/

Especially since the EastEnders fans tried mounting a campaign, petitions, etc. to bring EE back on the station and while it generated a lot of publicity, it didn't work.  At least it didn't work on BBCA:  Dish network ended up picking up the show instead.

Instead of fretting over good and bad shows and whether AYBS will not be shown in your area, JUST BUY THE SET!!! it's worth the price to be able to pick your favourite episodes at YOUR leisure! Also, the series afterwards (retirement) was good also!

Maybe they are acting in their own version of AYBS? and Grace Brothers on the
astral plane. I can't remember now who the first cast member I read about
passing away I think it was Mr. Harmon. He had done an episode of Magnum PI
back in the 80's when that show was hot as either a sort of shady PI that Magnum
had to occassionally use for info or one of his other not so legal informants
that he had to use. I don't remember which now it's been a long time since I've

I agree with you, but there are some out there that can't afford the set, so we all fret.  It's the same with I Love Lucy -- I have a set I bought years ago -- and yet I still love to watch the show on TV.

Especially since the EastEnders fans tried mounting a campaign, petitions, etc. to bring EE back on the station and while it generated a lot of publicity, it didn't work. At least it didn't work on BBCA: Dish network ended up picking up the show instead.

Instead of "fretting" over others fretting over good and bad shows...just chill. Sites like this are created for known and unknown friends to shares likes and dislikes of topics they are interested in. "fretting" is part of it. As many people have noted, there is a very good knowledge of the dvd's being available...point noted.

So lets not continue to "fret" over "fretting" any longer.

.... And in the states, the shows air on public television which is supported by the viewers, not sponsors.   So either way, you're coughing it up to see the Britcoms.

Especially since the EastEnders fans tried mounting a campaign, petitions, etc. to bring EE back on the station and while it generated a lot of publicity, it didn't work. At least it didn't work on BBCA: Dish network ended up picking up the show instead.

That's what I did Gus when my PBS stations began to make noises that they weren't going to continue to show them (which was always a false statement since britcoms and AYBS? in particular was a huge money drawer for my stations).  When they originally offered the DVD's over here, the set was in two parts with 7 DVD's in each set and included the specials.  Over time, I managed to get the whole set, the AYBS? movie and Grace and Favour which was the final series after they "retired" from Grace Brothers when the store was closed down.

For those fans that may not have the money to buy the whole DVD collection, Netflix offers them for rental.  I find it very irritating now that most of the catalogues that were offering the DVD's of our favorite britcoms have begun to package the entire show rather than separate seasons.  It can get quite pricey to buy our favorite shows now.  When I got AYBS? on DVD they had it split between Seasons 1-7 in one set and Seasons 8-14 in another including DVD's with specials on them.  Now they don't offer it for sale in that manner, it's packaged Seasons 1-14 all in one package.  The AYBS? The Movie is available at Amazon for a reasonble price as is Grace and Favour or as it is known in the States as AYBS? Again!  It only ran for two seasons and it is not that expensive to get.  Amazon is still the best place that I have found to find good deals on our beloved shows.  From time to time, Amazon may also have some of the early books that were printed for the show that were offered as premium gifts from several different public broadcast stations available for purchase.

I have the 25th anniversary book that was offered as a premium gift when I donated one year and it's a treasured item.  I have a mug with Mr. Humphries on it and I have a mug with Mrs. Slocumbe.  Her hair colour changes depending on whether you put in hot or cold liquids.  I have an "official" Grace Brother tote bag that was designed to look like one of the store bags.  I have an early Christmas ornament that was designed like a Grace Brothers bag.  I don't see how in the world you would ever have been able to hang it off a tree branch as heavy as the bloody thing is as it is wooden.  I've used it on my desk for years as a pencil cup instead.

I used to work for Target in the fitting room and one of the ladies that I would relieve from duty was also an AYBS? fan and we would often ask each other Are You Free?  Naturally our responses were always I'm Free! and we would be in hysterics and no one else would understand what we were having so much fun over.   She was from England originally so it made it doubly fun for me.  I understood most of her witticisms.

Instead of fretting over good and bad shows and whether AYBS will not be shown in your area, JUST BUY THE SET!!! it's worth the price to be able to pick your favourite episodes at YOUR leisure! Also, the series afterwards (retirement) was good also!

There are 14 DVDs total.

However, DVDs #7 and #14 do not contain any actual AYBS episodes on them.  #7 has specials for John Inman, Wendy Richard and Mollie Sugden plus a British slang guide.  #14 has The Best of AYBS, Celebrating Mollie Sudgen and the 1st episode of AYBS?A.

Amazon is your best bet to find them--both individual DVDs and in sets--and the prices tend to be pretty good too.   Don't be afraid to order from the Amazon Marketplace--I've had good experiences with them and most of their 3rd party sellers are reputable.  Or try other stores such as Suncoast video and bn.com.

You answered him even better than I did!  I knew there were specials that Joh Inman, Mollie Sugdan and Wendy Richard did in my set but I totally forgot about the slang guide.  I've become so accustomed to the slang and other british vernacular over the years that I don't even think about it and use a lot of it myself on a daily basis again without thinking about it.  If no one has caught my previous post I made, Netflix has AYBS? available for rental as well as the rest of our favorite britcoms and some of them are even under their immediate play option where you can watch them right on your computer from the Netflix site.  I have done that with Red Dwarf.  I don't know if Netflix is available in Britain but they sure have proved to be an excellent video resource.  They have a lot of obscure titles available.  I agree with Minki, Amazon is your best bet for anything printed, video or music.  I have never seen such a fabulous way of conducting business before.  If y'all haven't explored their "food court" you need to take a gander over there as well.  Amazon has to be the internet version of Fortunum and Mason's or Harrods!

Oh and in case no one else has realized this, british telly seasons do not run the way their american counterparts do.  A british telly season can have as few as 4 to 6 episodes and as many as 10 in their season.  A show may actually skip a year or years before they come back with new episodes.  American telly usually runs from 22 to 25 episodes per season and I've never seen them skip a year(s) in programming.  Generally in american telly if you see your favourite show being bounced around from its regular viewing night, that is a good sign that it is on its way out.  If there is a show that the producers and/or stations would like to see a quick demise, they'll stick the show on a night against an impossible to beat show which will then give them cause to move it to less than optimum night.  A year of bouncing around its viewing schedule will find it off the air.  It is hard for a show to maintain its regular viewing audience when its viewing audience can't find their show's viewing time!  These are a few observations that I have researched in trying to determine the demise of shows that I have enjoyed over the years, Star Trek being one of them.  Although when the original letter writing campaign was going on, I wasn't really old enough to understand what was going on enough to participate.  I just knew I liked the show and Mr. Spock!

Oh merciful heavens.  I can't believe we lost Mollie as well.  Its pretty much down to Captain Peacock and Mr. Rumbold as the only live ones left other than maybe a few of the minor characters or customers.  I just rewatched the whole of this fantastic show last week after Wendy Richard crossed over sort of my personal goodby and thanks for the laughs.  I knew Mollie had been very ill and suffering with something ending in myalgia another form of fibromyalgia and the steroids really tore her up.  I just can't stand this.  This year so far has been a most traumatic one for me.  I lost my dearest friend on 11 Februry 2009 shortly after midnight to cancer.  He kept going the rounds of the specialists and they kept telling him that there was nothing wrong but he knew there was and he wasn't feeling right.  He finally demanded that they put him in the hospital for intensive testing and wouldn't you know it when they did the full body MRI scan, he had cancer so bad throughout his body in every organ and even his brain.  He spent Christmas 2008 in hospital.  He called me on 28 December 2008 after he had been discharged and told me the news and I thought my heart would break.  He came to see us on 31 January 2009 for a brief visit.  I don't know how he managed all of our stairs in his condition but he did.  He came to beg my hubby to get checked out thoroughly and to continue to get checked every year.  We said our goodbyes and my hubby was in a bad state.  He was not going to accept that this was the final time he would see his friend alive on this plane.  He kept saying over and over that they were wrong like he could make it go away saying that.  It has been a devastating death for my whole family.  Jim was part of our family even tho he was not blood.  I knew when he left that he had just given us his final goodbyes my hubby wouldn't accept that.  He is still having problems in dealing with it.  His mother died when he was young from congestive heart failure.  While I'm not crying every hour, I still have trouble keeping myself together and with both Wendy and Mollie dying literally within weeks of each other it's gotten to be a bit much again.  Plus another friend of mine died from a massive stroke a couple weeks after Jim died.

Thankfully my hubby listened to Jim and scheduled a physical including a colonoscopy.  I found out that my hubby was going thru some light rectal bleeding.  Not pleasant topics to discuss even on a forum board but please all of you get yourself checked out especially you guys.  It's foolish to bury your head in the sand and think nothing can happen to you.  When my hubby had his test completed, he had to have 3 polyps removed and one was in a pre-cancerous stage so they need him to come back in six months for another one to make sure nothing else is going on.  The trick to combating this hidous disease is prompt treatment and if you're not getting satisfactory results from your PCP then seek other opinions no matter how many.  Cancer is an elusive thing to detect as it takes on different symptoms that are for something entirely different.  That is how I lost my Mum to cancer.  She was misdiagnosed by a handful of doctors and one even told her that all her pain was in her head.  Now either she was actually misdiagnosed or they didn't have the guts to tell her that she was riddled with cancer and there was no chance of recovering.

Plus with all the to-do over here in the States with the death of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett it's been a bad month all the way around.  I used to like June!  We're getting lots of conflicting reports on MJ's death.  I'm hearing it was from a heart attack, then a possible suicide since they found so much oxycodone in his stomach, accidental death by taking too much and finally they think it might have been foul play as they found needle marks on him.  They're trying to find out why he had that medication because he had no issues that were relieved from taking that medication so we're probably talking buying them off the street or having someone pinch a pad of doctors prescription pads and forgery.  Thank goodness a lot of doctors offices are upgrading to the latest technology where they input all the information directly into a computer about the size of a spiral notebook.  They have a form that comes right up on the screen that they can use a stylus to fill out.  It's pretty cool actually and patient's medications are already listed in there so they print them off.  There is much less risk than having to have prescription pads laying around for someone to steal.

Any way sorry for the long post I'm just venting out my sorrow with other people that love this show as much as I do.  At least we'll always have the DVD's to be able to continue enjoying the antics of our favorite department store.  Y'all take care.

down to Captain Peacock and Mr. Rumbold as the only live ones left other than
maybe a few of the minor characters or customers.  I just rewatched the whole of
this fantastic show last week after Wendy Richard crossed over sort of my
personal goodby and thanks for the laughs.  I knew Mollie had been very ill and
suffering with something ending in myalgia another form of fibromyalgia and the
steroids really tore her up.  I just can't stand this.  This year so far has
been a most traumatic one for me.  I lost my dearest friend on 11 Februry 2009
shortly after midnight to cancer.  He kept going the rounds of the specialists
and they kept telling him that there was nothing wrong but he knew there was and
he wasn't feeling right.  He finally demanded that they put him in the hospital
for intensive testing and wouldn't you know it when they did the full body
> MRI scan, he had cancer so bad throughout his body in every organ and even
his brain.  He spent Christmas 2008 in hospital.  He called me on 28 December
2008 after he had been discharged and told me the news and I thought my heart
would break.  He came to see us on 31 January 2009 for a brief visit.  I don't
know how he managed all of our stairs in his condition but he did.  He came to
beg my hubby to get checked out thoroughly and to continue to get checked
every year.  We said our goodbyes and my hubby was in a bad state.  He was not
going to accept that this was the final time he would see his friend alive on
this plane.  He kept saying over and over that they were wrong like he could
make it go away saying that.  It has been a devastating death for my whole
family.  Jim was part of our family even tho he was not blood.  I knew when he
left that he had just given us his final goodbyes my hubby wouldn't accept
that.  He is still

congestive heart failure.  While I'm not crying every hour, I still have trouble
keeping myself together and with both Wendy and Mollie dying literally within
weeks of each other it's gotten to be a bit much again.  Plus another friend of
mine died from a massive stroke a couple weeks after Jim died.
