Tom,
I'm only a couple miles away from you, although I am using a Dish
6000 as my HDTV receiver. My current set-up comprises a small flat
UHF only antenna and a much larger antenna for VHF and FM reception.
The outputs from these 2 antennas lead into a mas-mounted, high-gain,
low-noise pre-amp. My problem was that this resulted in excessive
gain, causing overloading of my receiever. I split the signal into
4 outputs to feed the rest of my house, prior to feeding it to the
Dish 6000, but had to add a further 7db of reduction to get relatively
high (80% to 90%) readings without drop-outs. I previously tried an
indoor antenna without amplification, and a small Winegard GS2000
"stealth" antenna, both with and without amplification. My take is
that these antennas are essentialy useless. I would strongly
recommend that you move to a more conventional antenna type.
I have mine mounted to a 10 ft pole (actually two 5ft sections
combined) in my back-yard. The UHF antenna can be had for about
$40.
I've only had this set up properly in the last couple of days and
have had steady signal strength since then. I'll have to wait until
it gets really windy again, before I can definitely say that I'm
immune to wind-caused multiplexing drop-outs.

I've added your data as #13 and someone else's
as #12 to the "Database Map.gif" file. I listed
you both as A. Interesting, since you are both
inside the perimeter. This picture is becoming
clearer.
We need more data people.

I am glad that there is a place for Atlantians to go as a HDTV
resource. I am still new to HD, but I am loving it. I have filled
out my info on your database.
Thanks,
Mike
I counted six messages on the list today,
which is unusual. I just want to point
out that you can have change your subscription
to Daily Digest at the web site, so that you
get all of the messages for a day in a single
e-mail. You can also switch off the e-mail
entirely and just review the postings at the
web site.
I have 3 tall pine trees in the front of the house, which faces east, and am
using an amplified indoor antenna in a back room. On Avsforum John Stephens
has suggested mounting an antenna on the roof to solve dynamic multipath,
but I have not yet come to grips with doing that.
I can sometimes get all 3 uhf stations without moving the antenna, but WSB
is the hardest to get. If they are broadcasting at their max wattage it
should easier to receive than CBS.
I tried an additional 25 db of amplification which boosted the meter
readings from 45-55 to 70-90 for all stations. I also tried the RS double
bow tie. Nothing fixed the wind problem. And WSB was still hard to get.
If it is windy for the Masters or Final Four I guess I'll try a bigger
antenna in the attic or out a window. Otherwise I do have other things to
do besides watching HDTV.

There is an interesting thread on the

RayC mailed me the following regarding the map.
I used the lat-lon from someplace on the internet
for those locations and Streets 2000 to mark them.
I plan to update it and make one for the database
this weekend.

Also, I got the wattage from the same place. I
think it represents the legal maximum for the
station, but they may be broadcasting at less?
If they vary power output from time to time, it
will be nearly impossible to get a reliable notion
of reception parameters around town.

Barry,
I have a little better signal strength than you do and my DTC 100 did not
have any problems with wind. I am generally in the high 80's to low 90's and
using CM Stealth mounted on my DTV dish. I also have a HD100 that will not
get CBS, it only stays on for 1-2 seconds, NBC drops out every 5-10 seconds.
I have not hooked it back up since the wind died down but may try that
tonight. By the way signal strength on both the stations is in the high 90's
on the HD100.

The map looks great and I am looking forward to push pins for each of us. I
like knowing the wattage.
My reception is suffering from dynamic multipath. I am making the
assumption that it was the high wind this past week that has been causing me
problems. Signal strength would drop from 70 to 0 and back constantly,
making viewing impossible. Last night was no problem; I enjoyed the movie
and Leno with no drop outs. Does any one else have weather related
reception problems?

I've got the same problem you have.
The CBS Monday night lineup was unwatchable due to the high winds,
but last night, all four OTA channels were rock solid.
I'm not sure if wind in itself is the problem, or the wind moving
all the very tall old growth pines that surround my house.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who lives in a clear-cut
subdivision and see what his experience was.
I'm running at 120in Radio Shack YAGI in the attic with no preamp
direct to my DTC100. I've ordered a CM7777 preamp to see if that
helps.

Just a note to say hello. I just joined your group and look forward
to hearing from all you other HDTV nuts. I live in Conyers and have
had a DTC-100 with satellite and OTA reception for 10 months now.
Overall, at least in the last 2-3 months, I have gotten pretty decent
signals from all 4 digital channels. I love my HDTV, I just wish
there were MORE PROGRAMMING!
Good Luck Everybody,
Ray
You might want to try attenuating, as you may have too much signal.
Concentrate on getting your UHF OTA Analog Channels to look good
first, then DTV reception should also be good.
RS has a variable attenuator that you can try and bring it back
if it doesn't help. I've been to the RadioShack.Com store at
Buford Hwy and 285, and they have em.

I live near I-575 and Bells Ferry. I was able to use a $20 amplified indoor antenna to get the stations, but I had to keep adjusting it anytime I wanted to change stations. So I switched to an amplified omnidirectional in my attic. So far its been an okay compromise between getting all the channels and the channels staying locked in most of the time. My signal levels will fluctuate and drop down to 0 or 40% sometimes and I'll lose picture and sound. But this only happens about 1 or 2 times an hour. I also have local air traffic going into and out of McCollum airfield that goes directly over my neighborhood occasionally. That may be one of the things messing up my signal.

I work at Hitachi Telecom, and bought
it through the employee purchase program.
It's 53" 16:9 format, and I'm glad I
didn't get the 61" I was trying to
get. After waiting 60 days for one
to become availabe through the program,
I said I would take which ever came up
first. We don't need anything bigger.
It cost me $2500 including sales tax and
shipping. I think I saved about $1000
using the program, but had to wait about
100 days to get it.
As expected, it is like a magnifying
glass on signal flaws. I'm using AT&T
digital cable as before, which is only
digital above channel 100 or some such,
and we don't watch those higher channels.
I don't have a 5.1 setup, but the TV
does support it through its own center,
a subwoofer out, digital audio in, stereo
out to a receiver. I will try that out
this weekend. I've got a lot of rearranging
to do.
I'm still gaining experience with the
color/contrast/brightness options. It
has a room light sensor with can help
do some things automatically, but I'm
not sure exactly how that all relates
together.
I'll be looking into OTA signals once
I get settled in.
You didn't mention where you live, with
the hookup outdoors. I live in Tucker,
and expect strong but somewhat directional
signals. We'll see. It's been good to
hear from locals, to get a stronger idea
who gets what where with what equipment.
There's a simple database for this group
where people can enter this information
once and for all without having to e-mail
it to every newbie that comes along like
myself. Not much data there now, and I'd
be interested in comments on what columns
should be included.
I'll tell more as I get hooked up. If
someone wants to come by and give their
opinion on settings, let me know.

I'm still waiting to get an HDTV, but I do have HDTV reception off of my DTC-100 going to my older Sony XBR250. If I could only have waited a year to buy that TV :). I'm using a silver stealth antenna loosely mounted outside on the balcony of my apartment, and get really intermittent TV. I managed to get all of the stations above 70 strength, but some of them cut in and out. Does anyone have any good experience with a small/indoor antenna? I'd be interested to see if anyone's getting ALL of the locals with an indoor. I know I had to move my silver stealth outside to even hope to get all of them. Everywhere inside got 2 or 3 out of the 4.
So CB, where'd you get your TV? What'd you pay for it? What do you think so far?
CB->ahdtv:
I would like to meet with some of
the locals who've had (varying)
success at recieving OTA. It sounds
fun to get together and tell horror
stories about ill-informed sales
people, good and bad broadcasters
and reception, etc.
Scanning people's locations, it
seems Perimeter area is centrally
located, as is often the case for
this type of thing. That's what
I thought, anyhow.
Alternatively, I would suggest we
meet somewhere near someone's
system, if they might be interested
in showing and telling, for example.
Timeframe-wise, I was thinking
that Saturday morning, maybe for
breakfast, would be good. It's
an unusual time to meet, so less
likely to be difficult to schedule?
Alternatively, assuming there are
only a few of us into this at any
particular location, we might plan
to schedule when several things are
on several channels, just to be able
to compare features, reception, etc.,
which implies some prime time?
First schedule conflict: My kids are
in a joint custody situation, so half
of all possible times are already
eliminated for me. Sorry. Mondays
and Tuesdays and every other weekend,
starting next weekend is best for me.
----------- First Specific Suggestion
I'm due to get my 53" Hitachi this
week. Would someone bring a STB over
and check out my signal strength,
judge my DVD picture quality, etc.?
I have a Radio Shack double bow-tie
to hook up, but would probably try
to have an alternate for such a test.
I'm work with others to work out a
good time. I live in Tucker.
Nice link, dmilam.
In case you weren't familar with
this, dmilam has added a bookmark
to the ahdtv@yahoogroups.com site
to a site which supplies daily
schedule listings of HDTV material.
dmilam, do you find the listings
to be consistent with what's actually
shown? Can that site be trusted to
be pretty accurate with what is
shown in Atlanta? Are there things
broadcast on the Atlanta stations
which are not listed there?
CB->ahdtv:
I've added a bookmarks section to
the AHDTV group. This is a place
to put key URLs related to the
topic. I've setup a couple and
would benefit from others including
their favorites.
I've also added a simple database
table. The idea is to start
collecting OTA reception results
with different antennas and STBs,
from different areas. This will
help me, future people in my
position, and possibly even a few
who already have a working system.
Checkout groups.yahoo.com/group/ahdtv
and login. You'll find these features
pretty quickly, I'm sure.
