Listed on play.com as due for release on 27/10/2008 is The Wombles
Delux Set.

I imagine this is the recent complete series 1&2 on DVD in new
packaging, because also due for release the same day is a Paddington
Suitcase Delux Set.

In the original books, the Wombles are described as looking like bears, and the
illustrations of the early Wombles are very much like a bear.
When Ivor Wood made the first puppet prototype for the TV series, he stuck to
the image of the illustrations.
Whether the Wombles are related to bears or not is never mentioned in the books
as far as I can remember.
Because of the eventual design of the puppets for the TV series, they have often
been compared to badgers.

Hi charlie,
i think the wombles have not been designed to be a certain animal.
But I read that the australian wombat has been compared with them in
some way, but this was a comparison of names mainly i guess.

Thankyou Tara and TC!

My own Nessie likes the water, so it seems like a good name for her. I
will keep an eye on the Tidy Bag site to see if a picture appears ;-)

Thanks Tony & Gail

I've checked the books and Nessie appears in The Wandering Wombles,
chapter nine, 'Nessie'.

There are also two younger Water-Wombles in the story, called Ross and
Cromarty - swimming in a row behind Nessie, they make up the dark
shape with bumps and humps that Bungo sees in Loch Ness.

Here are a couple of extracts:

'Excuse me asking,' said Bungo, ... 'but are you - are you a Womble too?'
'Sort of,' replied the stranger, 'but a wee bit different from you
Land Wombles for all that. I'm a Water-Womble. ... There's very few of
us left, so they tell me. Just one or two clans around the world.'

'I'm awfully sorry, but I don't know your name.'
'Ness,' replied the Water-Womble, 'after the Loch you see. Only round
here they usually call me Nessie. Good night to you.'

I'll add Nessie & co to the list of Womble names on the Tidy Bag site
- I'm sure there are others that I've left out too! I'll look through
all the books again some time, as I can't remember how far I got the
first time round...

Cheers

Tara

Hi all,

I wanted to find out about a Womble called Nessie. I have found a few
references to her:

http://www.tidybag. co.uk/wombles- books/annuals. html
("Nessie" is mentioned in wombles annuals 1980 and 1991 - I dont know if
this is Nessie womble or the Loch Ness Nessie though!)

http://www.fidella. com/womble/ womble_stories. html
"Hence a proper genus-species taxonomic designation would be womblus
wimbledonae (or some such - I'm not sure which Latin ending is
appropriate. ) for the most famous Wombles of Wimbledon, with the
provision for other Womble species (i.e. Nessie, the Tibetan Wombles)."

But when I go to the list of Wombles, she isnt included [:-s]
(http://www.tidybag. co.uk/wombles- info/questions. html)

The reason I am interested, is that I have a dog who was named 'Nessie'
after a womble. She, and several other West Highland White Terriers were
rescued from a puppy farm, and all were given Womble names. Wellington,
Uncle B, Miss Adelaide and Nessie are still shown on the rescue groups
web site at: http://www.cordysre scue.com. au/puppy_ farm.htm

I would really like to know more about my Nessie's namesake. We dont
know anything about the past of our rescue dogs, but at least if I know
the history of her name, I will feel like I know something of her past
[:)]

Any ideas, or even better, stories and pics??

Thanks for the link, Beryl.

This looks like one of the ones FilmFair had made in the 1990's (when
the then new ITV series was being aired).

It may just be that it is made to the same design.

I always have a fondness for the Womble pop group costumes. And the
Wombling Free outfits were so lovingly based on the TV series puppets.

Talking of Wombles' downloads. Has anyone ever come across any
websites where the various songs that were never released by
Dramatico and Sony can be found?

I'm thinking mainly of the songs off the first Wombles album
(Wombling Songs) such as Bungo's Birthday. Presumably it is too much
to hope that Mike Batt may one day authorise the release of the
original albums?

For Abbey Kids Shop order and product enquires, email:

For Abbey Kids Shop account and store enquires, email:

You could try getting a replacement from the shop or seller that you
bought your disc from, but they will only have to get a replacement
from Abbey Home Media anyway.

Hi everybody,

new member Tony here, just to let you know that replacement discs are
available now if you have bought the first release of The Wombles
Complete Collection DVD.

If you are not aware, the first 24 out of the first 25 episodes play
in the wrong order. Episode 3 is missing altogether, and episode 16 is
on the disc twice.

Have just joined this group and it's great. Finally, some like-minded
people!

Having read throough the previous posts, it seems that a lot of members
would like Wombles costumes, but no-one can find them.

Does ANYbody know where we can get decent, realistic costumes?

The only ones I've seen are home-made versions, which are, quite
frankly, rubbish and deserve a tidy bag of their own.

Hi folks

Uncle Bulgaria's favourite newspaper, The Times, is giving away a set
of classic kids' TV shows, starting with a free Wombles DVD inside
this weekend's Sunday Times (13 January).

The cover image shows 'Tobermory On TV', similar to the commercially
released DVD that came out last March, though it's not clear how many
episodes will be included on this free version.

Apparently there will be adverts for this giveaway promotion across
television, radio, press and outdoor posters, although the only one
I've seen so far was in the press (in thelondonpaper this afternoon).
So keep an eye out for Tobermory!

More details: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/kidstv

The Wombles are also featured in a new TV advert for gas and
electricity supplier EDF Energy. It's a montage of old footage with an
environmental theme, and at the end it says: "This commercial is made
from recycled film clips."

The short Wombles clip appears near the end, with Uncle Bulgaria
saying: "Oh, that's the idea - making good use of bad rubbish."

You can watch the advert on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKlC7iGzi-M
Read about the advert in the Media Guardian:

Hi, is it possible you could be a little more specific? There have
been many cover versions of Wombles songs, mainly released in the UK
by Hallmark in the 1970's on their cut price 'Top of The Pops' range
of albums. I believe the same label also put out a full album of
womble songs which were recording by a bunch of session musicians. A
few years later they released a 'Wombles Christmas Party' album
featuring the original material as recorded by Mike Batt & Co.

eBay has been my source for many years since I live in Canada. I
bought my first dolls - the Burbank toys talking Wombles - at a toy
store in London, Ontario in the mid 1980s but have rarely seen any
other dolls for sale here. Hence eBay.

It helps to know what you are bidding on. Here's a quick synopsis of
what is potentially available:

Pedigree made the original Womble dolls in the UK. About 8"-9" in
height, generic eyes, fairly stiff and hard to find with complete set
of clothing and caps since they were removable. Glasses were fixed to
the nose, however.

Burbank Toys produced a large 15" and well detailed talking Womble,
again with removable clothing and accessories. The downside is that
their arms are held stiffly out in front of them, they are very
stiff, have generic eyes and the voice box breaks very easily.

Knickerbocker Toys in New Jersey USA produced a very nice set of
Wombles - better detailed than the Pedigrees, with clothing sewn on.
Problem is trying to find any for sale - they're very hard to get.
There may only be a few characters - I've got Wellington and Great
Uncle Bulgaria and the tag on one also shows Orinoco as being
available.

Homemade Wombles also abound - some of these are poor imitations. But
McCalls made two sets of patterns available (3 characters in each
packet) for sewing enthusiasts to make their own 10" Wombles. The
result reflects the skill of the maker and the materials at hand. My
first Womble doll - tan fur, slightly darker tan nose and face, blue
floppy hat and blue/green knitted scarf - was made by a lady using
these patterns. She had created a kind of cottage industry making
Wombles near London, Ontario and I was referred to her by an
executive from Penguin Books who were publishing the Wombles books in
Canada at the time - but that was in 1978!

In the early 80s Rainbow Toys produced a complete set of Womble
dolls. These are the ones to get of the vintage dolls. These have the
correct eye colour, reasonably detailed clothing, white backed with
brown ears, grey fur, fingers on their paws and came in large (12")
and small (8") sizes. Some of the large ones came with battery
operated removable voice boxes with what sounds very much like
Bernard Cribbins voice in character. But, best of all, they are
cuddly and pliable.

In 1998 First Love produced dolls to tie in with the new series.
Backpacks (Bungo and Orinoco) were also made available. Nice, soft,
cuddly, pliable, and well detailed but the eyes bulge out far too
much IMHO. New characters not in the original series also available.
You can also get an Orinoco that snores. Lots of these on eBay - some
still in the boxes!

There are also Womble Beanies, about 5" high, well detailed but
plump. These show up on eBay sometimes as sets.

Golden Bear produced an Orinoco doll that wiggles his nose as he
sings "Remember You're A Womble" - cover version, as opposed to the
original recording.

Boots Drugstores produced two 20" dolls - Orinoco and Great Uncle
Bulgaria - as hot water bottle covers. They are quite well detailed
with clothing sewn on. Also very soft and very cuddly - and a great
source of warmth when used with the hot water bottle (a must if you
don't have central heating or have a thermostat that allows the house
to get cool at night to save fuel). They are almost as big as the
average toddler which makes me think that these were intended not so
much for young children as for much older children and adults. These
crop up frequently on eBay.

There are also a new series of Wombles made as prizes for carnivals
and fairs - can't think of the maker at present. Not as nice and
detailed as the First Love Wombles.

And for the rich, there's a Steiff Orinoco, excellently crafted with
registration documents. I doubt you'll see these on Ebay but you may
still be able to obtain one from Steiff - at £300 or so.

There are also extremely large (about 3 feet high!) and chubby
display dolls. These are quite rare and expensive.

There's a Womble site that has pictures of most of these brands of
dolls. You should be able to google it.

Hope this helps...
