The largest stuffed Womble I've ever seen was about 3 feet high and stood on
a table at the entrance to a day care in Waverly Station, Edinburgh in 1986.
I inquired as to whether he (Orinoco) was for sale and the owner quoted me a
price (50 or 75 GBP) as they wanted to get a large teddy bear to reflect the
name of the daycare - Teddy's Place. (Wombles were somewhat passé in 1986
when I was over on a visit, but Roland Rat was enjoying his 15 minutes of
fame.) It was too expensive for my budget - plus there would have been the
cost of getting him over to Canada. But they took a picture of me standing
beside it as consolation.
I'm not certain if any other large Wombles were made and are available for
sale (Teddy's Place may still have theirs - good luck!) but you could always
opt to make one yourself by enlarging the McCall's doll pattern that can
still be obtained occasionally on eBay. The only problem is that the
proportions may be out of whack.
And for the record, Wombles Ltd. found that 6 foot Wombles tended to
frighten children up close, so they recommended that Wombles be kept to
child size. (They made exceptions for the "band" and other "personal"
appearances, however.) In the Wombling Free movie they hired midgets to
dress up as Wombles and described them in the movie as "four foot, fat, and
furry" which matches the illustrations in the original two novels and thus
close to Elisabeth Beresford's original conception. The TV series made them
much smaller.
