Phil,

My advice, AVOID PHILLIPS and SONY at all cost!! You will have more problems with those brands than you care to deal with. Go with Panasonic or Pioneer.

I had a Phillips at one time and could not wait to get rid of that unit. It was one of the biggest waste of money I've ever spent not to mention compatibility problems with disc made on it playing on other players.

Phil,

I checked out the link and they look to have some good deals on the recorders we've talked about.  Of the 160gb they have available which one would you get?  Have you purchased from them before? Have you had any troubles at all with your DVD recorders that have hard drives on them.  I figure I'll be burning several 100 dvd's over the next year and will be throwing everything at what ever machine I buy.  Let me know what you think would be the best bet "Phillips or Panasonic".

Thanks,
Michael

No prob, Converting some of the tapes now. The KTLA 40th Anniversary show is a goldmine! I love retrospective stuff like that! I'll make you a copy of that one.

As for DVD recorders, I know world-import still sells them (multi-standard NTSC/PAL so make sure it records NTSC), here's a link:

Cheers!

Thanks for both your emails. Now if only I can find one with a harddrive in it. Those seem to be very hard to come by.

About recording DVD's in 6 hour mode, it all depends on the recorder you have. I have 2 Panasonics and 2 Pioneers and anything I record from VHS to DVD that was originally in 6 hour mode looks identical when recorded that way. Even if you copy the material to DVD using 2 hour mode, you are not gaining any quality from that original VHS tape. There really isn't any way to improve a picture that comes from VHS. Especially if it was recorded in 6 hour mode.

This subject always opens up a big can of worms but what I typed above is based on my own experience. The brand of recordable DVD you use may also affect the recorded disc.
