Received the following from a fan in LA. This sounds like an excellent idea, which could be replicated with fans in your own areas. Check out the Web site when it’s up:
Hi my name is Pepper and myself and a few other people have been working on getting together a rally in LA to have a silent protest. We are currently creating a website to help with it. www.saveangelrally.com <http://www.saveangelrally.com> We would love to work together with you. Out intention is much like yours to educate the fans on what they can do, give address and contacts for sponsors, station execuctives, and media affilates. As well as arrange the protest, Anyways if your intrested in helping each other let me know. Our site won't be up until tommorow sometime but you can email me anytime Thanks!

Simon:
This is a copy of the thread I just posted on the cityofangel.com chatboard,
hope you approve and that it drums up some support:
For those who would like to do more than READ about saving Angel:
A new site dedicated to saving Angel has been created. While the CoA threads
have been helpful, they are by there nature very disjointed in the
information they present.
www.saveangel.org is a concentrated info area with news stories, contact
info, A LINK FOR DONATIONS TO THE CAUSE (proceeds will go to advertising for
Angel's renewal: the first goal is to get an ad in Variety), and much, much
more. There is also a link to join a message board that will e-mail you new
developments on the subject.
I have personally donated $10 (which is fully refundable) to the site and I
encourage everyone who can to donate something, anything! If you do not have
a credit card or are under 18, get someone else to do it in your name.
And also remember that thusfar the concensus has been that handwritten snail
mail will receive more attention than the petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/ai5d0162/petition.html, which has over 35,000
signatures. Cari has done a wonderful thing in creating this petition, but
remember that your work doesn't end there: send in snail mail as well!!!
saveangel.org has all the contact info you need, and if it doesn't, the
site's creator will post it if you inform him of pertinent parties left off
the contacts list.
Please note that this site was created VERY recently and may still have some
glitches. Overall though, it is a damn good effort and result from one very
dedicated fan named Simon.
Please everyone remember how much fun we have all had over the last 8
years...a little extra effort will go far in ensuring that we have many more
years of Angel to come!

To fight this, we need to educate ourselves, and use Mr. Levin's words against him. He said, just *last month*:
"If you train the audience to be more fickle (by airing short-term reality series), eventually, you'll pay a price for that, as opposed to more long-term relationships with scripted programming,' noted co-CEO and president of network entertainment Jordan Levin, who conceded that the WB was nonetheless developing some more reality series.
Levin took responsibility for the failure of the WB's most recent efforts to reimagine popular old entertainments: After hitting with the Superman manque "Smallville,' subsequent revisionist efforts "Birds of Prey,' "The Lone Ranger' and "Tarzan' fell flat.
"(The WB's) is not an audience that embraces anything that feels replicative of anything that has gone before,' Jordan said. " 'Birds of Prey' and 'Tarzan' got a lot of attention, so when there's failure, that's magnified, as well. We've slipped a little bit, and we've got to gain a little of our credibility back.'

USA Today's Robert Bianco promotes Angel and slams The WB, in Critics Corner:
What to watch Wednesday
€ No series is having a much better season than Angel (WB, 9 p.m. ET/PT), as witness tonight's funny, creepy outing about a children's show that steals children's souls while upholding "a certain standard of quality edutainment." The best joke is on Angel, who is turned into a perpetually scowling puppet.
It's a great episode, which makes the news that WB is canceling the show that much harder to take. Still, you can't blame the network. It has to make room for the next Tarzan, Birds of Prey or Fearless — or, even better, for yet another attempt to clone Dawson's Creek.
INT'L COMMUNITY KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE ANGEL SERIES IN INTERNET TIME
SaveAngel.org goes live to worldwide fans
17 Feb 2004 - On Valentine's Day, when he read about the cancellation of one of his favorite shows-- The WB network's Angel-- Simon Fleischmann first made an entry into his blog. Then he bought the domain, SaveAngel.org, to start a "Save Our Show" campaign. Within a few hours, he had put up a Web site with advice and ideas on how people could contact the network executives behind the decision.
He did this before American fans had even woken up to the news-- from Tel Aviv, Israel.
Before the reports had even hit the press or airwaves, Internet sites were springing up, calling for The WB to change their decision. An online petition drive drew over 20,000 submissions in its first day. By Tuesday, a new site had already been started for Fleischmann's now-dubbed "Save Angel Campaign HQ." It was programmed and hosted by a Web designer in England, Shaun Church.
Welcome to the 21st Century.
To discuss the cancellation, Fleischmann created an email group on popular search engine, Yahoo, which over 50 people joined with no publicity. The members hailed from such disparate places as Finland, Germany, Ireland... and New York, where 26-year old graduate student Amanda Greves offered to help lead a fundraising effort to buy a Variety ad.
Of her love for the show, Greves said, "It's not really about escapism; [it's] about a struggle between right and wrong and the grey areas in between."
"In the guise of the battle between demons and humans it challenges us to think for ourselves-- to examine what it means to be good-- to know how in our own small way we can fight the good fight. Not bad for an hour of television."
By the end of the third day, the campaign had kicked into high gear, with updates going out to group members up to a dozen times a day.
"It's taking up a lot of my time," said Fleischmann, "But I really get a sense of empowerment... that all these people from all over the world can come together, to rally around what might seem like a trivial matter: a television show about a vampire with a soul. But they feel like they're fighting for the lives of the characters themselves. I don't think the network realized how many people their decision would affect."
For his part, Fleischmann vows that for the eight remain weeks before the end of the season, he will do "everything possible to convince The WB execs that they're making the wrong call."

Remind your friends, and have them remind theirs!
I think we already have a rough idea of why Mr. Levin cancelled Ats. Didn't he
say something about needing to take away old shows to "bring in new ones"? And I
heard Angel is going ot be "replaced" by a soap opera called "Dark Shadow",
which used to air I believe it was in the 70's? Well I heard he's bringing it
back on the WB, and anyway, it's a soap opera about a vampire. I think if Angel
does not get renewed, what we need to do is make sure we do not watch "Dark
Shadow". We need to show the WB that they cannot replace Angel by bringing back
an old soap opera and calling it a "new" show.

I’ll periodically gather news from the various resources to provide you with a fuller understanding of what’s going on with Angel. But first, this article from the Akron Beacon Journal, with spoilers about tomorrow’s Angel episode:
"There may be hope for resurrection. Although nothing is finalized yet, Whedon is talking with the network about possible "Angel" TV movies next year to tie up any loose ends in the story.
A lot depends on whether Whedon and 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the show, will succeed in shopping a sixth season of "Angel" to another network, such as TNT, which carries reruns of the show, or UPN, which previously picked up "Buffy" after it left the WB."
Did the reporter make this up, or does he/she have an inside line on something that Whedon is actively pursuing?
And finally, in the “Are they reading their own releases?” category, comes this, interesting bit sent out by The WB two weeks ago:
BURBANK, CA (February 3, 2004 € ANGEL outpaced "The West Wing" on NBC, and "King of Queens" and "Becker" on CBS in the time period to rank #3 among persons 12-34 (2.3/7), women12-34 (2.6/7), men 12-34 (1.9/6), adults 18-34 (2.2/7) and men 18-34 (1.8/6). The series topped both NBC and UPN among women 18-34 (2.6/7). The program scored outstanding year-to-year gains in all key demos, including a +36% improvement in total viewers (4.3 million) and a +37% increase in females 12-34.
I agree, and have started using “Angelians” on the site and in email already. On related front, April makes an excellent point: if you use a chat service, you can put Angel information in your profile. Include a link to SaveAngel.org, and a note to remember to watch Angel on Wednesday 9/8C.
More news shortly.

Hey - not entirely sure yet on the costs as there are
different sized adds and we are trying to get good
"real estate" in the magazine. We're setting up an
account today for people to donate and I'm talking to
Variety to see what we can do. I'll keep everyone
posted as new info comes in.

Nielsen ratings and demographics mainly determine a show's fate. Nielsen Media Research collects weekly data on how many homes are tuned into a program and the demographics of its TV audience. But other factors can influence a show's future, including letter-writing campaigns or, for example, an ongoing war.
"Letters can be effective when the networks are really close to renewing a show and need that extra nudge," says Robert Thompson, professor of media and pop culture at Syracuse University.
... Sometimes fan persistence pays off, as was the case with the CBS police drama "Cagney & Lacey." The network pulled the plug after the show's shaky debut in the 1982-83 TV season. After the letters of loyal viewers inundated the network, CBS brought the show back and it lasted another six years.
Because of fan response, ABC's "The Practice" was spared in its first season in 1997, but its future is uncertain again.
According to the "Save Ed" campaign, they were able to purchase a full page
Variety ad, which is to run on February 20 for $5000. They were able to
raise the funds in a week!
You can see the ad they're running here: http://webpages.charter.net/jniner/

I've set up an Amazon "Honor" system donation site at:
<http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P2IXGAUMV0XI9A>
You can donate from as little as $1.49 -- Amazon allows $1 donations, but
since they charge 15% + .15/donation, $1 = .70cent donation. So I've set the
minimum a little higher.
The donation is fully refundable.

Save Angel Campaign Group members: (woo, that's a mouthful!)
We now have about 30 people on the list, so I throw open the following two
questions for discussion:
1) By what catchy one-word name do you prefer Angel Fans be called?
Some suggestions include:
Angelians
Angelites
Angelics
Angel's Admirers
Any other suggestions? (I'm partial to the first, 'cause it's pronounced
like Ann Jillian, which is kind of funny.)
2) What would be a good Save Angel Campaign slogan or rally call?
Something clever, funny and easy to say. Some of my quick ideas include:
"V for Vampire!"
"Make WB stand for Welcome Back!"
"Six Seasons for Blood Suckers!"
"Vamping for Victory!"
"Shansu Says Six, too!"
"Remember the Angel-o!"
Ok, that last one was a stretch... but what can you come up with?"
Please tell others about the SaveAngel.org site -- now available are some
Web banners which you can use on your own pages to link to it.
Also, did you follow up on your assignments to remind people again that
tomorrow, Wednesday, will be an awesome episode of Angel?
Keep it up!

More info. Garth Ancier is someone we will need to target. He was at The WB back at the start of Buffy, and even claims to be the one who cast Sarah Michelle Gellar! When current WB Chairman/CEO Jamie Kellner leaves in April, Jordan Levin and Ancier will split responsibilities. (They’re already being called “co-chairmen”)

DVD spins large in TV's future
Most see disc sales as financial boon, but some warn of negative effect
By R.D. Heldenfels
HOLLYWOOD - The TV critics' press tour has included a lot of talk about television's future.
And some of that talk has been about DVD.
Garth Ancier, co-chairman of The WB, sees a significant financial benefit to networks from DVD sales of their shows.
``The box set sales (of Angel) have been tremendous,'' he said. ``Well in excess of 500,000 box sets sold at about $50 a pop. That does go into the kitty.''
It actually goes to the studio making the show, not the network televising it. But Ancier said, ``If the studio can become whole without our license fee increasing -- which is what happened here (with Angel) -- then that's good for us. It makes it more affordable for us to make that show.''
Angel creator Joss Whedon was later asked if the money from DVDs was indeed helping the show.
``Asking me about revenue streams is almost like asking me about science -- it's going to go badly for everyone,'' he said. ``I don't know if it helps us. It doesn't hurt. The Angel DVDs have been really popular... and it's another way besides the Nielsens of proving we have a loyal and strong fan base.... And as creators and, I think, as performers, too, it's a wonderful thing to know that this isn't on one night and then disappears. It's not disposable. It's going to sort of live forever.''
Now this is meaty! We can Jordan Levin’s words against him. Note the bolded sections below. (If you don’t have HTML on, read the fourth and sixth paragraphs.)
Well, Mr. Levin, what do you have to say for yourself?
While other networks zig, the WB zags proudly Article Published: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 - 3:33:20 PM PST By David Kronke

Executives for the WB almost seemed to be thinking out loud as they mulled over the future of the television business during their press conference at the Television Critics Association's semiannual press tour in Hollywood.
Jamie Kellner, the soon-departing chairman and CEO of the WB, put it succinctly: "Ten, 15 years ago, technology worked to the benefit of both the viewer and us in the business. Now, technology is the enemy. As it fragments the audience down to a level too small, it will damage the business and the quality of the programming we provide our viewers with. We will have to reorganize the business and how it is paid for, but things will get worse over the next three, four, five years in order for change to be made.'
Noting that viewers are tuning out repeats more than ever, Garth Ancier, network co-chairman, said, "You're looking at a 52-week season. How do you change the model of network television to reflect a 100-channel universe?'
Intriguingly, the network believes it can do so by expanding into the made-for-TV movie business, hiring Tana Jamieson, formerly of TBS, to head up development: Its first effort will be an adaptation from the popular "American Girl' book series. Levin said the WB is entering the genre precisely because so few other networks are attempting made-for-TV movies these days. "We've done well when we do things no one else is doing.'
Levin also conceded the perception that the WB is not successful with sitcoms is partly his doing, as he doesn't schedule any on the nights his network is most successful but on evenings where it has traditionally been weak, due to tough competition or its target audience generally not being home. "As long as we keep putting comedies on Thursday night and Friday night, we're not making a statement as to the dedication we feel toward comedy that we actually feel within the network.'
The current season has seen the networks accusing the Nielsen ratings system of under-counting younger viewers, which has made running a youth-oriented network like the WB particularly challenging.
Of his colleagues, Kellner said, "They have to interpret something they don't necessarily believe (the Nielsen numbers) to figure out what they should about programming.'
"There's a lot of change going on; this season has been very complicated,' Levin agreed. "You have to keep your head and not tear up a schedule you believe in.'
Amanda,
I think that's an excellent idea -- and something that the successful "Save
Farscape" campaign did. They are a good model of what fans can do when they
get together. I suggest you check out their site:
http://www.SaveFarscape.com for some ideas.
In particular, they put together a nice two page report on their show:
http://www.watchfarscape.com/cancellation.pdf
For just such a possibility I set up for a donation fund for the Angel
Campaign through the Amazon Honor System. It's fully refundable:
http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P2IXGAUMV0XI9A
The minimum donation is $1.49 -- Amazon allows $1 donations, but takes 15%
+.15 cents, so a dollar donation turns into 70 cents.
What would make me shy away from Variety at the git-go is that it won't get
more regular people to watch the show, since Variety is an industry-read
magazine. Though, it will make The WB realize that the fans are serious and
have economic strength.
I think our aim should be to generate free publicity and buzz, by contacting
local newspapers/media. To this end, I'm writing up some example
letters/releases for people who would like to lead up the local effort.
Please let me know if you're interested, and I'll draft some suggested ways
to get In touch with your media.
Thanks, and good luck!
Simon

This is a crazy idea I had while sitting in my government class this
morning. It may be too far-fetched, but it also may be something
that no one has tried. So here it goes:
There are probably around 200 people that work on each episode
of "Angel." Most of these people will be left without jobs
once "Angel" is over. Let's face it; the economy in California
sucks. Even if we don't know much about CA's economy (and I am one
of those people) we still heard about the ailing economy of the
state. It doesn't help that many movie and television productions
are being produced in Canada at a lower cost. "Angel" is not only
produced in L.A.; it is a show about L.A. So here is my idea: we
contact the governor of California—Arnold Schwarzenegger. As an
actor, he must know that the crew will be the ones that get hurt in
all this; they are the 200 or so people behind the scenes. This
includes costume designers, hair stylists, makeup artists, assistant
and second unit directors, property masters, set designers, sound
editors, special effects, visual effects, and all the people
involved in stunts. These people will be able to find new jobs, but
there is nothing like knowing your work (where you work, your co-
workers, etc.). And since more and more productions are being taken
out of CA, they might not be able to find jobs at their home.
Losing jobs hurts the economy. It is like Time Warner is laying off
200 people in CA.

Crazy, I know. It may even be bordering on a stupid or bad idea.
But maybe this kind of thing will make the news or something. "Save
Angel to help the CA economy." Kind of has a nice ring to it, right?

Variety has expanded its coverage of the Angel cancellation. This new article is interesting in a number of ways: it says out that head of The WB, Jordan Levin chose to cut Angel because it 1) it doesn’t do well in repeats; 2) it didn’t have “new audience upside”; 3) it’s taking up a timeslot, when they need more reality shows.
It also notes that cost were a factor, but not the central one— typically shows going into their sixth season see costs got up, as everyone’s contracts come up for renewals. Finally, reading between, it seems to indicate that Whedon pressured Levin into making the decision early (rather than at the last minute.)
All of these points are ones that we can pick apart in arguing *for* renewal.
The article follows:
WB decides it's time for 'Angel' to fly away
Sun Feb 15, 7:00 PM ET JOSEF ADALIAN
(Variety) This "Angel" has gone to heaven.
The WB has opted not to renew the Joss Whedon-produced drama "Angel" for a sixth season. Frog topper Jordan Levin informed Whedon of the decision to cancel the skein Thursday night.
Move on the surface is a head-scratcher. Twentieth Century Fox TV-produced skein is the net's second highest-rated hour among viewers 18-34 (behind lead-in "Smallville") and fourth among auds 12-34. Its numbers have been solid this year, even against brutal competish on Wednesday night and in a year in which the WB is experiencing double-digit Nielsen declines.
But Frog execs are also facing the reality of an aging sked, with skeins such as "Charmed," "7th Heaven" and "Gilmore Girls" potentially facing final seasons next year.
Levin also said the rapidly changing economics of network television played a big role in the decision to end "Angel." Skein doesn't repeat well, and Levin anticipates having to double run one or more dramas in primetime next season --- as well as add more reality programs to the Frog's mix.
"We have a lot of veteran shows that are aging, and we're going to have to make room for new programs," Levin said. "I know this will make lots of fans unhappy. But we have to have more at-bats, and we need to create timeslots where we can repeat shows (the same week episodes premiere.)"
"This isn't about the WB bailing out on one of its top shows," Levin added. "The show had a loyal core following, but it didn't have a tremendous amount of new audience upside."
All parties involved said the cost of the show itself was not the central factor in the decision to cancel "Angel." The WB made waves three years ago when it decided to part ways with Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" after a squabble with 20th over its license fee.
Whedon said that while he understands the business part of the decision, he's nonetheless "heartbroken."
"I thought that if a show was really good and doing really well (in the ratings), it was renewed," scribe said. "I was apparently misinformed."
Whatever the intricacies of the Frog's business model, Whedon said the decision to axe "Angel" doesn't seem logical.
"I do understand the business of it," he said. "But to me, when they're scrambling to hold on to their audience, their revenue, their dignity, it doesn't seem the best decision. And it's certainly not the classiest."
"If there's no place for quality in the equation, I don't know why we're here," Whedon added.
Dana Walden, prexy of 20th, said she understands the WB's point of view, even if she's disappointed by the net's decision.
"I can see their perspective. Jordan has been very honest about the decision-making process," Walden said. "(But) when a show works on your air, you have to find ways to keep it there. Shame on all of us for not finding a way.... There are a lot of disappointed fans."
Levin said he and Whedon started talking about the show's future a few weeks ago, right around the time of the show's 100th episode party. Conversations about the changing state of the TV business left open the possibility that "Angel" --- despite its creative and ratings strength --- might not be a slam-dunk to return.
"He said he wanted to protect his cast and crew, and asked if I could let them know sooner rather than later," Levin said. "These are usually decisions you wait until the last minute to make. But after 'Dawson's Creek,' I saw how important closure was for a cast, and given Joss' request, I owed him (an early decision.) It was a very bittersweet parting and an end of an era for us," Levin added. "I have the ultimate respect for Joss as someone who created two landmark series and stood behind them the whole time."
Because ratings and reviews have been solid for "Angel" this season, Whedon said his cast and crew were "stunned" when he broke the news to them Friday. "Nobody saw this coming," he said.
On the positive side, with casting season just heating up, the show's thesps will now have time to line up projects for next season.
Whedon said he and "Angel" exec producer-showrunner Jeff Bell have already mapped out the series finale, which Bell is slated to helm. Whedon continues to explore the possibility of a feature based on his short-lived Fox skein "Firefly."
As for "Angel," Whedon said he was glad the show passed the 100 episode milestone, and grateful to Walden and 20th prexy Gary Newman for their support during a two-year frame that saw the natural end of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and now the end of "Angel."
While there's already talk of some "Angel" telepics, Whedon said it's too soon for him to imagine such a possibility.
"All we have left on 'Angel' is to end the season with episodes as strong and meaningful as we can muster," Whedon said. "But then, we were going to do that anyway."
"Angel," which starred David Boreanaz as a vampire with a soul, was created by Whedon and David Greenwalt.

'Angel' won't see a sixth season
WB clips Whedon drama's wings early
By JOSEF ADALIAN
"Angel" is headed for TV heaven.
The WB has opted against renewing the Joss Whedon-produced drama for a sixth
season. Frog topper Jordan Levin informed Whedon of the move Thursday night.
Move on the surface is a head-scratcher: Skein is the net's second
highest-rated hour among viewers 18-34 and fourth among 12-34 auds. Its

Wednesday night.
But Frog execs are also facing the reality of an aging sked, with skeins
such as "Charmed," "7th Heaven" and "Gilmore Girls" potentially facing final
seasons next year. WB topper Jordan Levin said the net needs to find
timeslots to establish a new generation of hits.
Such decisions are usually made in May, when nets have all of their new
development in front of them.
"(But) like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year,
including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast, crew, writers and producers of
'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a
classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know
that this would be the last year of the series on the WB," Levin said. "We
have discussed continuing the 'Angel' legacy with special movie events next
year, which is still on the table."
