Hello, All! - Last nite I was awake at 3 AM or so, and turned to the Sundance
channel (digital) which sometimes shows
recent Korean films in the wee hours of the morning. One of their offerings was
a horror flick called "Bunshinsaba",
and it was so scary I only watched it for 10 minutes then scurried back to bed!
My nerves can't stand the creepy surprises
of a good horror film, but if you're made of sterner stuff, I can really
recommend it! (Maybe it's on DVD).

The ancient Egyptians--as we know from the pyramids and massive architecture and
statuary--were fine engineers, and their society depended on an annual flooding
of the land to wash nutrients and water from the Nile River over Egypt's narrow
strip of arable land. The "Nilometer" (a modern term, based on Greek) involved
a series of wells along the northward-flowing Nile River, particularly a great
well far upriver near Aswan, with marks on the interior stone to indicate the
height of the flood at that point. These measurements were taken north of the
Mountains of the Moon (the Nile's origin) but far south of the fertile and
civilized region of Egypt, and thus enabled a prediction of whether the annual
floods would be (1) too heavy, causing ruin from excess water, (2) moderate and
just right, within the hoped-for boundaries, or (3) bring drought, because
inadequate snow-melt and rainfall would not permit any flooding at all. A
detailed explanation can be seen in this interesting educational video:
http://videos.howstuffworks.com/science-channel/30376-what-the-ancients-knew-nil\
ometer-video.htm .

There's a discussion of the antiquity of the Nilometer in this source:
http://www.touregypt.net/niloelephant.htm. This article dates it back to about
the period of Thutmose III, who reigned from 1479 to 1425 BC. This was in the
famous 18th Dynasty of the Middle Kingdom--an era that produced the religious
reformer Akhnaten and several able warrior Pharaohs.

The Nilometer seems similar in principle although not identical to the Korean
rain gauge, and was used for similar reasons, to warn of possible disastrous
flooding or drought. Maybe one of you engineers can explain the differences
between the Nilometer and both the Korean rain gauge & the one developed later
by Castelli in Europe. I can think of one difference, in that the Nilometer
measured river height at a particular time of year (before the flood that the
Egyptians called the "inundation") and not rainfall over a period of one day or
some other short period. Rain contributed to the Nile, of course, but rainfall,
specifically, wasn't what was being measured. Still, it was a pretty neat
invention for 3,500 years ago!

I heard that "Bunshinsaba" was a remake of a Japanese movie with the same title,
and the original film was scarier than the remake.
For those of you who are interested in Korean horror movies, I can say that "A
Tale of Two Sisters" has the reputation of the scariest hoorror movie in Korea.
(You can see Kim Kap-Su in it) It was also remade as "Anna and Alex"in USA.

seung i so agree w/u about "a tale of two sisters" aka "janghwa, hongryeon";
it is one of my favorite films ever. it's more psychological thriller than
horror.
also the u.s. title was 'reworked' by dreamworks @ the last minute to
"the uninvited". it was released here in feb of this year and was gone almost
as soon as it came out. absolutely horrible which was not surprising. the
original
was more than brilliant. hence the old adage:  if it's not broke, don't fix it!

seung, i read on wiki, that the film is based on the joeseon era
folklore, janghwa
hongreyon jeon. how popular is this folktale in korean culture? it reminds me
a great deal of hansel and gretal & rapunzel. each gave life lesson about love
and
the definition of family. they also are great lessons in leaning to be careful
for
what u wish for as it just may come to u. i wonder if janghwa hongreyon jeon is
viewed in the same way by koreans.

sorry guys typos........................................

hi all
just a quick btw for philly area mems. the 2009 philadelphia international film
festival wraps this weekend on 4/6:   http://www.phillycinefest.com/index.cfm
included with the many international listings are 5 south korean films:

chugyeokja (the chaser): great thriller; think "silence of the lambs" meets
"seven" with a hint of "saw" (saw 1 only; parts 2-6 are just ridiculous!) for
flavor; see the original, warner brothers just acquired the rights so guess who
will be getting a bad remake ala "the uninvited".

go go 70s:  music biography based on a true story of the rock group, the devils;
archival footage is mixed into this film to give it a more vintage feel along
with it's incredible music.

meotjin haru(my dear enemy):  road movie slash romance film about a
heard-it-all-before woman and her charming, fast-talking, ladies man, dead-beat
ex-boyfriend; just how long before the sparks rekindle?

won-nang-so-ri(old partner):   this heartwarming tale came out of nowhere
beating some of south korea's top movies as the 3rd highest grossing film of
2008; the docu looks @ the inseparable bond between choi won-kyun and his ox
which has been by his side for 40yrs; the ox called the "one" who stayed as
choi's 9 children, including all of his sons, left home a/f the ox put them all
through college; tears of joy & sorrow will come as u watch their last journey
together.

treeless mountain(na mo ohpshi noon san) hangul mal title may be
incorrect/pulled from another site:  this is a joint u.s./south
korean semi-autobiographic work by korean-american director, kim so-young; shot
in south korea, the story centers on the abandonment of jin and bin, 7yr old and
5yr old sisters; tossed everywhere they amazingly still manage to always adapt
to whatever life throws @ them with a grace and maturity most adults could stand
to learn.

check these out this weekend if u can. if not, look for their upcoming dvd
releases. other members keep an eye on the international film festivals in ur
area as most of these films will be included in the same.
seung, out of curiosity, did u see any of the above films last year?

enjoy!

"Jangwha and Hongryeon" is so well known that most Koreans (even youngsters)
know it. What Koreans generally think about it is that it's one of the
"rewarding the good and punishing the evil" stories to which most Korean
folktales belong.

"Jangwha and Hongryeon" is so well known that most Koreans (even youngsters)
know it. What Koreans generally think about it is that it's one of the
"rewarding the good and punishing the evil" stories to which most Korean
folktales belong.

Tonight I was watching some clips of "Hwang Jini" on YouTube (yes, I realize
many didn't catch it, since it was on the now-defunct AZN)
so I could hear the great music and see the fabulous dresses and wigs of the
gisaeng once again, and in the first ep who should I spy as the kindly monk that
raised Jini in the temple where her mother left her, none other than our evil
Wang Zhen!

Even if he does resemble the STAR WARS Emperor, the man playing Wang Zhen is a
good actor, so I imagine he could play all kinds of roles. I don't know the
actor's name, but he has a noticeable permanent smile and twinkly eyes, which
are sinister in his current role, but could also be jovial and fatherly. My
curiosity has to do with his enunciation of Chinese. Because of his slowness of
speech and extreme tonalism he gives a vague impression of being a bit
uncomfortable in Chinese. I can't speak and understand any Chinese, and simply
don't know. I only feel that the other actors in "Sejong" don't exaggerate
tonalism quite so much when talking in Chinese and speak more rapidly.

There are many Chinese here in Philly and I used to work alongside one of them.
A few years ago a former boss was a Chinese-American. They often spoke Chinese
on the phone to relatives, and their speech was very rapid and although tonal,
not as noticeable as Wang Zhen's. Most Chinese Americans (and I believe most
Chinese who have emigrated overseas) come from regions that use Cantonese (Yuet
Yu) while Wang Zhen may be speaking what Americans call Mandarin and others call
Northern Chinese (modern China's official language). I can't tell. They aren't
the same, and Mandarin may be both deliberately slower and perhaps more tonal.
Or the "Wang Zhen" actor is speaking that way to appear more sinister.

Can anyone comment on this?

PS: I do know the name of the actor playing Choi Man-Ri (Lee Sung Min). He's
very good-looking but the pouches under his eyes give him something of a
sinister look, too--which is useful for the plot! His menace reminds me of Cato
at the end of the Roman Republic--intending to do right, but ending up doing
everything wrong out of excessively narrow and rigidly dogmatic personal
principles (which both of them hypocritically broke when it was for their own
convenience). Nearly all modern historians are convinced that Cato wrecked the
Republic with his intransigence and extremism, and Choi seems to be a real
threat to Sejong. But--who knows? So was Jo Mal Seng and he's changed.

I didn't think that "A Tale of Two Sisters" had as much of a reputation for
scariness as it did for its cinematography and its set decoration. Actually I
always thought some of the Korean action films such as Oldboy and Sympathy for
Mister Vengeance are as suspenseful as the horror films from Korea. Speaking of
Oldboy, they're showing that tonight at 11:30 on The Sundance Channel.

The Sundance Channel will be showing that again late night April 20th at 1:30.

thx 4 the heads up bryan. i'll be marking my cal 4 all. i didn't even realize
park ye-jin was chul-in. i've had the yeogo goedam  series for over 4yrs
now but it's been a while since i've looked @ it. i'm gonna have to check
them out again. in fact sundance aired ryeong (aka the ghost aka dear friend)
last week. for those watching dae wang sejong, yi yun-ji (queen soheon) played
eun-jeong, eun-seo's tong-saeng(younger sister) in ryeong. interesting since
in ryeong her character is all of 15yrs and in less than 5yrs she's now playing
the 'omoni' of korea. actually she's quite versatile considering she started in
comedy (sitcom nonstop). thx again, i'll be watching 4 sure. :-)

Here in Bucks County (Comcast
Bensalem), the channels have
been dropped *only* in the
old-style "analog" feed --
they're still there if you
have digital service through
a Comcast-provided digital
converter box, which costs
less than $10 extra per month
per set. I suspect if you
get yourself one of those
boxes before the weekend, you
won't miss a GKS beat. :-)

Donna:

Ganui (simplified instrument) is a sky-observing instrument which evolved from
an armillary by simplifying it, whereas a sundial is just for measuring time.
Perhaps an armillary is not an observing instrument but an educational or
modelling tool, isn't it?
After Ganui had been invented in China, it was made smaller and portable in
Chosun during the reign of King Sejong, and named so-ganui (small simplified
instrument).

We are still watching on analog because we tape the show. (We can also see it

will continue same until June 12??? Anyone know? I must see GKS to the end!

You can record onto a VCR
from the digital box --
it's just a matter of how
you hook it up. What you
can't do is record from
the box and watch another
channel. Many (most?)
VCRs have video and audio
inputs in addition to the
usual screw-on cable
input, and those can be
connected directly to the
corresponding outputs on
the digital box with an
inexpensive A-V cable.

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone in the Willow Grove PA area know if WYBE is having
technical difficulties?

We have Comcast and Channel 35 has nothing but "snow" since yesterday,
4/18/09....obviously I missed last night's episode.

I didn't see any notices on their website.

Well then.....
