Our "Korean correspondent" Seung (webcolorchart) mentioned once that when EOTS
was shown in various Asian countries, EVERYONE was so distressed by Yeom Jang's
emotional pain...this is a real tribute to Song Il-Guk's superb, nuanced acting,
I think! - Donna T

SPOILER
In defense of Jung-Hwa, her story was as tragic as Yeom-Jang's, don't you
think?? Both were under the "protection" (practically slaves) of evil people,
Lady Jami and Master Lee, and being loyal to their masters under the mores of
the period and place, had no self-determination. Jung-Hwa conducted herself
always with absolute correctness given the circumstances, and earned her
survival. Yeom-Jang avenged Master Lee's death, too, as he had sworn to do, and
then accepted his fate. EOTS was truly Shakespearean in its sorrowful ironies
and inescapable ends.

MORE SPOILERS

I agree with you absolutely. Jung Hwa's story WAS tragic. And she
concluded that her involvement with either Jang Bogo or Yeom Moon was bad
for all of them; so she resolved to not get romatically involved with
either. That would seem to have played itself out ~ whenever she admitted
her love for Jang BoGo, bad things happened to all of them.

I just loved the conflicted character of Yeom Moon so much; and felt that
there was so much good in him - and he wanted to be good that had Jung Hwa
given him the slightest encouragement; "I have deep feelings for you and I
owe you so much, just please respect my position" that would have been
something for Yeom Moon to cling to and maintain goodness. I realize though
that the end had to be what it was.

In the end, I still can't stand Jung Hwa and I decided to keep my eye on
Song Il Guk because he was so brilliant as Yeom Moon.

Hoping some of those with the Jumong dvds can answer a
question.

YesAsia offers preorders for a "US version" of 81
episodes, sold in 4 separate volumes, a total of 28
discs.

AsianDB offers a boxed set of the entire show (81
epis) on 20 discs in a Hong Kong version.

Both have english subtitles; both are region 1
compatible. Can anyone offer an opinion as to
distinctions between the two?

Thanks,
Anne

The Hong Kong version will typically have chinese "pirate" subs. Sometimes
these subs are excellent but typically this means both mispellings and glaring
grammatical errors. Also, most times with the Hong Kong version the names are
translated as Chinese names not Korean names.

The US version typically has better subs and has been translated from Korean to
English. (In the Hong Kong version you will often find that the subs have been
translated from Korean to Chinese to English.)

For the cost of this set, I would not risk purchasing the Hong Kong version.

Thanks, T - buying the volumes separately (I do not
see that the US version is being sold as a complete
set) is more expensive, so I needed to know if there
was a justification for it - and from your
explanation, there certainly is!

Thanks, Theresa, for clarifying that about Hong Kong subtitles - I was wondering
why the subtitles to the Chinese series I occasionally watch ( "Seven Swords
from Mt. Heaven", and " The Romance of Red Dust" )are so horribly translated!
It adds such humor to them it's hard to take the stories seriously at all. -

ms. anne, versions such as the ones asiandb sells are the "others"
i told u about. they are not really "pirated" as they are legal
releases. they are just not formatted for english speaking audiences.
kds are hudge w/the chinese so most companies make specific
   releases for the chinese market.
remember it may cost more but any sbs/mbc coming from ya entertainment
is the only us english subbed version. any sbs/mbc media that says "eng subs"
but
not put out by ya entertainment distribution is not for englsih speaking
(ie american) audiences. ya does the north american distribution for
sbs/mbc. kbs does their own u.s. distribution but may begin using ya
in the future (keep ur fingers crossed). ya is a great company. product
& packaging is well done & the subs are great. they contain no grammar/
spelling errors. they sometimes also come w/small booklets that help explain
any cultural traditions non-koreans are not familiar w/. my "damo" & "dae
jang-geum" sets each have these & they are broken down per eppy. it
will be worth the cost in the end. u will have high quality product that will
last a whole lot longer. think of it as an investment w/a great return
pending!

Frank, congratulations on your Korean name and new sword!
Dae in 'Dae-Ho' is the same Dae in 'Dae Jo-Young,' and Hae actually

C,

Yes, they are correct. The former means "congratulations" and the
secong "Good Job." But the latter should not be used toward persons
older than you, since it is not a respectful form. More respectful
form would be "Àß Çß¾î¿ä!" and the most respectful form would be "Àß

Uhhh-HUM!
   (clears throat)...

   FRANK!?
   CONGRATS!!!!
Now we just need to find you a Khitan Princess and have someone chase you
around for a bit so you can rise to power and take over Washington!
   -_-
What? It could happen! I'd love to know about the Korean swordmaking process.
And is there a specific name for a Korean sword? What about the quality of
Korean swords, in comparison to Chinese swords, in comparison to Japanese
swords? Do you secretly slash at the air when no one is looking only for the
mere fun of it? Is there a Korean sword draw technique that emphasizes drawing
from the sheath like Japanese battojutsu? When you were givin this name, was or
will there be, a ceremony? Sorry to sound idiotic but, will you swear
brotherhood, kill a white horse, and then drink its blood while vowing to
restore the integrity of something, somewhere, within a set amount of time?

If so, can Bob video tape your adventures since we have been made aware of his
skill with the camera? Can I write about it? Although random these questions be,
do you find yourself headed off to wherever and constantly reaching for your
sword before heading out the door? Can you now randomly smite the following
unabridged list; brigands, rebels, eunichs, peasants, Choi Choong-hon,
attendants, Chon-su the Sellout from IYSS, wayward people like me who post these
things, the Infamous Wimpy King of IYSS, the person who created the bad pacing
music for DJY, anyone who says that Wakizaka was not one of the best all-time
villains and those... who ascribe to the religion of MACROBIOTIC FAITH!?

Has anyone timed your sword draw? Who is the best known swordsman in Korean
history and who is regarded as the current master of Korean swordsmanship? Do
women learn swordsmanship? How long did it take for you to master the sword...
and, and this one is key... have you begun to master... the Art of Korean Drama
telepathy? Hmmmm, hmmm, hmm...

Om Mani Padme Hum, Om Mani Padme Hum, OOM MANI PADME HUM!!!!
I still can't gain ground on the whole mind-reading technique...
I'm starting to lose faith here! Why do I see an image of all of the ministers
clearing their throats and looking at me funny as they look around and up in the
sky?

With all of my foolishness as well as seriousness, I say to you Hae Dae-Ho. I
could tell when I saw that demonstration a while back that you have worked very
hard to get to where you are. CONGRATS!!!! And keep striving forward! Continued
success, sincerely, Shawn.

Hi

I really appreciate your sense of humor. It's great!

I'll try to answer some of your questions. The sword we use is called

Actually I am more familiar with the forging process of a Japanese

targets like thick bamboo stalks. A more delicate and lighter Korean
sword is known as a samgakdo and is used for cutting softer targets
like rolls of straw.

Most training consists of cutting through the air. I make at least
500 cuts with different techniques every day. It almost become like a
meditation as the mind and body work in harmony. I try to cut bamboo
as much as I can I just planted a garden in my yard. I also practice
throw cutting techniques in which I toss an object in the air and
then draw and cut it. There are twelve techniques we need to know. I
also like to practice cutting blindfolded.
I also practice sparring techniques with a partner. Sometimes with
out contact and sometimes we put armor on and use jukto (shinai) and
practice full contact. Not many of my classmates do full contact
because it leads to a lot of bruising and can be quite painful if you
are on the receiving end of a successful attack,

I haven't slain any white horses yet nor drank their blood. I have
had a glass or two of soju with my instructor several times.

I don't consider my skills worthy of Bob's taping abilities and
regarding Macrobiotics, I haven't seen Michio Kuchi in years,
although I will be meeting Christina Pirillo tomorrow.

The best Korean swordsman I know in the States is Master Dong Jin
Park and I think Master Jung Woo Kim may be the best in Korea right
now. I think one of the best past swordsmen would have been Hae Mo
Su, if he existed.

Women do study sword technique and I have to admit that they are

Well, that's the nice thing about a group like
this...you find out about all sorts of other options.
you folks have been most helpful.

Just think...I will only have to get up to change the
DVD 20 times with this set. If I'd purchased the
YesAsia version, I'd have to get off the couch 8 MORE
TIMES!!! So maybe it's not such a bad deal after all.

That makes no damn sense. Which is it, are we against the oppressive regime of
North Korea, are we the oppressive regime or are we all supposed to get drunk
off their liquor and inter-marry until it goes against filial piety to kill your
in-law's! No matter how much you may want to!

like Japanese battojutsu? When you were givin this name, was or will
there be, a ceremony? Sorry to sound idiotic but, will you swear
brotherhood, kill a white horse, and then drink its blood while
vowing to restore the integrity of something, somewhere, within a set
amount of time?

aware of his skill with the camera? Can I write about it? Although
random these questions be, do you find yourself headed off to
wherever and constantly reaching for your sword before heading out
the door? Can you now randomly smite the following unabridged list;
brigands, rebels, eunichs, peasants, Choi Choong-hon, attendants,
Chon-su the Sellout from IYSS, wayward people like me who post these
things, the Infamous Wimpy King of IYSS, the person who created the
bad pacing music for DJY, anyone who says that Wakizaka was not one
of the best all-time villains and those... who ascribe to the
religion of MACROBIOTIC FAITH!?

in Korean history and who is regarded as the current master of Korean
swordsmanship? Do women learn swordsmanship? How long did it take for
you to master the sword... and, and this one is key... have you begun
to master... the Art of Korean Drama telepathy? Hmmmm, hmmm, hmm...

Hae Dae-Ho. I could tell when I saw that demonstration a while back
