I have a friend who had a triple a few months ago, rushed back into the swing of
things and had a minor set back. So take it easy for awhile and build yourself
back up. And when your ready with thoses DVD's let me know. They might make a
great Xmas present for my wife...........Thanks Don

alexanderledoux <ajledoux@...> wrote:I hope you realize that converting VHS
tape episodes to Digital
format
is done in real time. 200 episodes of EWG at 45 minutes minimum per
episode that has to be captured and compressed to a hard drive and
then
burning two episodes per DVD is the average. This last part takes
another 45 minutes minimum.

I'm now recouperating from open heart triple-bi-pass surgery.
However,
before the surgery I was converting all my DVD episodes to the DivX
format which gives me high quality DVDs with 8 to 19 episodes per
disc. I will continue with this process when I'm feeling better. I
will have all of the series 200 EWG, 94 DOTE, 158 AOW and also will
have IYSS which is airing now. Please be patient and I will let
everyone know when these are ready.

wants to keep the country autonomous usually has something bad happen to them.
This story sounds too familar for my own taste seeing how it was the same
problem that North Africa had as well as West Africa during the "colonization"
of Africa.
What is the deal? How do the weasels always manage to "weasel" strange bed

generations! Worse than that they tend to ALREADY BE KNOWN as... A WEASEL! It's
frustrating at times to read the same "tired scheme" played out over and over

Hi Alex. Whenever you are finished I can help out with the conversion to mpeg 1
or 2 which can be played in a DVD player. I've gotten four safely on a disk and
the picture is great even though I lacked cable at the time.

burned to DVD format and my friend who owns the series also wants a copy
burned to

Since it's a slow night on this site, I'd like to say
a few things about this terrific show which, alas,
unless you get AZN, you can't see right now. But, I'm
definitely going to buy it through YesAsia, because
it's one of the most inspiring dramas I've seen.
You see, it's not about the generals, emperors,or
rebels battling for "the Great Cause" OR the throne --
the characters are all those people you see going
around with their heads bowed --the attendants, the
eunuchs, the guards, the serving people, the entire
administration of the palace that in the other shows
are mostly voiceless extras.
It is the "Downstairs" of "Upstairs,Downstairs" -and
what a wonderful story it is!! Idealized, of course,
but very moving and inspiring. Greed, prejudice,
corruption and tragedy are portrayed equally with
beautiful depictions of loyalty and love - plus a fine
musical score that includes one of the most uplifting
melodies - a joyous, almost Celtic tune that has me
humming every day.(wish I knew the words!)
Anyway, enough said-- just WATCH IT if at all
possible! - Donna T.
If you have the computed savvy to download it from
some source or can buy it, i really recommend it -

Not sure of the number - 20-something, I think- but
day before yesterday was when Lady Jung died (which
made me get out my handkerchief and inspired my note

Jang-Geum's identity, and so did (good) Lady Han - the

it's one of the most inspiring dramas I've seen.
You see, it's not about the generals, emperors,or
rebels battling for "the Great Cause" OR the throne --
the characters are all those people you see going

It is the "Downstairs" of "Upstairs,Downstairs" -and
what a wonderful story it is!! Idealized, of course,
but very moving and inspiring. Greed, prejudice,
corruption and tragedy are portrayed equally with
beautiful depictions of loyalty and love - plus a fine
musical score that includes one of the most uplifting

Ji-Soon, which means He who had sense, but was not of Archfiend (perhaps the
main reason why he had sense).
Okay ya got me. His name didn't mean that, but he was Ji-soon.
I did find it ironic that Ji-Soon's sense of filial piety would ultimately
lead to his own death when he fell for the ploy of his fathers head being
dishonored in the town square. Also the fact that he had seized the Palace and
was guarding pantywaist Myung Jong but didn't kill him. One thing that the
review at the end of the AOW's was very keen on was the fact that the Warriors
NEVER replaced the Emperor and became Emperor themselves.
Ui-Min's grand enterprise of Kaelim, whether Duduel is blamed, Madam Bu-Yong
or Mrs Ui-Min, how ANY of these people could think that Ui-Min who STILL
COULDN'T READ by episode 90, could lead a Kingdom? The fact that he kept his two
USELESS sons around after they beat Bu-Yong bad enough to cause her to lose her
baby was also a sign of imminent failure. Factor in that his wife was ONLY his
wife because of the Governor of Surabul, she had to go too.
He just never made the tough choices correctly and the only son he had that
was worth his grain in salt was Ji-Soon, but he allowed Ji-Soon to become too
honor bound and loyal (according to AOW) to the Koryo Regime. How he could
believe that Ji-Soon would be able to help when he was becoming more and more
loyal to the Imperial House...
It reminds me of what Ui-Bang told Ui-Min. He told him that he was a great
warrior and to stick with that (during his entire "Hidden Ambition" speech that
Ui-Bang and Ui-Min had in Ui-Bang's office).
Ji-Soon could have succeeded where his father had failed, ironically, when his
father had been killed. When he seized the convey going back from the temple
(the same tired ass trick would be used against Choi Choong-Hon later as if he
was not alive for when they used iton the Archfiend... Myung Jong was an idiot
and General Du although loyal and I liked what he stood for... he was a stooge
for Myung Jong and the Imperial House). During Ji-Soon's seizure of the convey
he could kill useless Myung Jong, but he gets and even greater opportunity when
he gfets back to the palace and seizes it.
All of the Imperial House is at his feet at that point.
Yes if he kills them it is unlikely that he was going to last more than a week
on the throne or on the run, but he still has allies in the south and north
from his father's time in both regions... I just found that the AOW's truly was
an AOW's where they possessed little or no creative thought, originality or even
desire to better themsleves so that they could actually build something of some
sort of merit. I won't get into the fact that Geisha's became high powered
factors in the latter parts of AOW's which is just pathetic (and a clear
indication of how far out of synch things had become).
All and all Ji-Soon had his chance and much like his father he was not good
enough to realize what he was really trying to do or its actual significance in
the grand scheme of life. Ironically I just finished watching a documentary on
the Korean Conflict (or Korean War, pending on who you ask and who you talk to).

Enjoyed your excellent recollection of that thread of
AOW, about the Yis and the tragedy of the discrepancy
between their opportunities and their abilities(at
least as portrayed by the show) Yi Ui-Min was
probably the most complex character in the whole
series. I can't help feeling that Koreans read these
characters a little differently than we Americans do -
but I'm not sure HOW.. Class status and Confucian
ideals of loyalty will figure more prominently to
them, however. By that I mean that Ui-Min's "failure"
(to us) to capitalize on his successes would actually
be a virtue, because no one of low birth status SHOULD
ever have the throne. I believe it was Ui-Min's
realization of that that paralyzed him - and to a
follower of Confucianism, that's good. I just read a
biography of Kim Jong-Il and his father Kim Il-Sung,
and learned that South Korea is the only place in the
world today that still has temples to Confucianism! -

My guess that Americans would read these characters differently than
Koreans is that, in my opinion, there is no such thing as class
status. Although there are upper, middle and lower classes, there is
nothing binding a person from moving up, and for that matter, down
the ladder. If Ui-Min was lowborn to begin with, he should have never
gotten as far as Superior General. And at that period, the Superior
General could be seen as having the greater influence, moreso than
the Emperor.

But Confucianism teaches that it is wrong to change
status - that amounts to a betrayal of the immutable
laws of the divine. If you were born as the son of a
slave and a salt-merchant (as Ui-Min's background was
supposed to have been) - there is a reason for it,
even if you don't know it - and you owe loyalty to
your betters - i.e. those whom God has caused to be
born above you. Master Duduel, who urged Ui-Min
onward and upward, was a Buddhist, I think, and also
a "renegade monk." There were problems between
Buddhism and Confucianism because of differing
doctrines - such as this very one, that really define
who people are. But this is what I mean when I say
that because I am a Westerner and know very little
about these great Eastern religions and philosophies,
that I'm probably missing some of the meaning that is
in AOW, and all these series - D

HOLY MACROBIOTICS!
If that is the case about Confucianism pretty much telling you to be happy where
you are...
OUCH!
OW!
OWWWWW!
If what you say is even remotely true then I see why people often betrayed the
country to outsiders! It would mean that they have or had, a religious doctrine
that totally negates upward mobility! I am too far removed from my pious youth
(no pun intended) where I studied various religions and came to the conclusion
that man, in his infinitely flawed capacity, has to be careful in whom they
place their religious trust and how they practice their spiritual beliefs.
One false move and you're drinking Jesus Juice or Sippin the Kool-aide or the
Gold is Bubblin-up-outta-your-body and you've tithed till your po-ass-broke!
(say that 10x's fast and I'll throw in a Hail Mary cause you'd have to be full
of grace to have said all that).
^_^
All jokes aside, during my high school days I always found the role religion
played in a society or country, to be very powerful and very dangerous, when in
the wrong hands.
If what has been pressed forward as Buddhism in ALL the KBS drama's like EWG and
AOW 's is remotely true, then I have to applaud (drum roll please...........
   MANJOK!
Unlike Ui-Min who seemed more lucky than good with how his rise to power made
life better for peasants (which was NEVER SHOWN) unless you include the people
that cursed Archfiend when Duduel was walking through ye-ole-Imperial City...
and that wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement. Manjok did his best, he lost his
woman (Lotus) to the sneaky bastard Choi Coong-Hon, but still saved his
miserable life when CCH screwed up in the field. He maintained his loyalty under
the promise that CCH and the Choi's would make life better for everybody and the
peasants, but the hidden factor to why it took so long for a peasant revolt may
very well be exactly what has been brought up...
If their is the political system saying; "Don't worry be happy."
Then the religious sects are saying "Eh what're ya gonna do. Don't worry be
happy."
Not a whole lot of inspiration for change, but more importantly, if the
peasants do all the work, but the nobles and the like reap the benefit then how
will a country grow at all? I mean I figure the peasants make up the majority,
but if they have no rights... how many inventions and discoveries and
innovations does a society miss out on because this portion has no real rights
or say so? When times are bad I can only imagine how willing someone who is
excluded is, to participate in that society.
I'm really surprised that Confucianism was not as progressive as I thought it
was.
   SLAVES AND SALT MERCHANTS UNITE!
What are you waiting for! FIRE THE ARROWS!

While I'm at it and although it is something that stems from someplace else it
ironically ties into what you have brought up Donna and I will bet big money
that it is not going to be what (as far as what I'm about to say) you would
expect.
Okay... here I go. I'm gonna say it because I think it needs to be said so
"Damn the Torpedoes!"
I have been, for the last year, talking (if you want to call it that) with
penpals from Japan as well as being a member of other forums that have Japanese,
South Pacific, Taiwanese, etc people on them and for the life of me I have
reached my limit with the attempts to make things appear to be so foreign
because I am a "Westerner" and they are from "the East."
I am well aware that life and society as a whole are different there, but at
the same time if I had a stinkin quarter for every time somebody from Japan or
Taiwan, but especially Japan, tried to tell me that because of where I live and
where they live, it's a GREAT MYSTERY OF DIVINE PROPORTIONS. How they live and
the way that things are done (as well as the results) are so much more whatever
when compared to "Westerners", but then when I try to hold a candid conversation
with them (actually talking about the differences and similarities between here
and there) they get almost paronoid like I could be about to find out some great
secret!
When Donna put down she is a Westerner and stated it was a great Eastern
Religion and philos (I can't spell the word cause I'm gettin angry and thats
because)
Their is NO WAY that someone in the halls of power didn't understand that if
Confucianism and Buddhism state that certain fates, paths, destinies (sp), etc
are non-negotiable, then of course it can be a tool to control the masses!
What then makes these religions any better or more importantly different than
when people in Europe were told if they gave x-amount to the church they could
or would go to heaven. Or when the Catholic church use to dominate with its
philoso-whatever during their heyday. They all yielded the same result, unrest
and an eventual exposure that the church was either in league or in bed with the
government in an attempt to steer the populace one way or another.
I find it hard to believe that someone in Koryo didn't realize that the
potential of the country may be being stymied by the religious doctrine and
maybe "we outta look at it a little closer." Maybe I'm not explaining myself
correctly, but I'm a little miffed about this whole "Eastern Mystique" (I
spelled that but not philo-whatever... -_-...I'm not helping myself here with
this am I?)
I'm miffed because whenever I ask a question to an Easterner they try to
bombard me with how different they are and then I have to go round robin, look
up books by Eastern authors... (cause heaven forbid a tainted ignorant Westerner
write something about the East, even if they have or still have direct roots)...
only to find out VIOLA! It was exactly what I said without needing Carmen
SanDeigo, Santiago or the Internet search!
Yeah it means we suffer from corruption just like you Westerners or
dis-illusionment or whatever! Can somebody explain why too many Easterners just
will not admit something at face value when a "Westerner" sees something for
what it is? It's frustrating, like talking in circles for no real reason over
something that really shouldn't be such an issue.

Well, I happen to agree with your perspective - but I
guess that's because we're both born & bred in the ole
US of A. I DO think that the whole concept of
individual striving for "doing your own thing" is
given a thumbs up by us, but in traditional Asian
societies influenced by Confucianism, that sort of
thing was not the end-all-be-all we Americans feel it
is, particularly in the context of the family.
Your pen pals weren't trying to mystify things - our
traditions of social structure really are different --
and had vastly different roots. It's confusing,
because we all have the same (pretty much) clothes,
technology, etc. but, in the Judaeo-Christian world
and the Tao-Confucian-Buddhist world (leaving aside
the Hindu and Muslim traditions!) how families work
and how people relate to their society are still
different.
Another thing: our "melting pot" ethic here makes us
want to emphasize sameness among different traditions,
because that helps us bond together, but nothing could
be further from the Japanese point of view, which
emphasizes Japanese uniqueness. In their view, NOBODY
is like them... in fact, to become a Japanese citizen
without being Japanese is practically impossible! - D

I must say, I recently watched all of DJG and loved it. LOL Someone said to me
that it reminded them of the Perils of Pauline. It wasn't funny but it was
different from the historicals I am used to seeing.

Yes, Jang-Geum really went through some trials and tribulations! I know she was
a real person, but I have wondered about which, if any, incidents are based on
fact, or whether there isn't much known about her background ( so the writers
had a lot of latitude..). Donna T.
