     IDOL REVIEW

     Each week “The Idol Observer” shares with us his OBSERVATIONS on the
performances from the Idols!

     This is the Observers comments for this week:

     This week on Idol…..

     The Men
     I was on the show with Darryl Tuesday and he asked me to sum up my overall
impression of Tuesday’s performances. All I could come up with was “bored &
baffled”.
     With some of the performances I was one exclusively, or both “B&B”. I can’t
remember the order in which they performed for it was all one long nightmare.

     Let’s start with Blake. I think he went first. His first note baffled me,
for I was determined to “key check” him and it the note fringed on being both
sharp and flat which is an amazing feat, but not one anyone should ever want to
use on a regular basis. I didn’t know the song, so I really couldn’t compare it
to the original. Midway through the song he found a comfortable vocal position
and it was more pleasing and then he pulled out his ace card, his “scratch
technique”. It’s going to be interesting to see how he works that technique into
Broadway or Big Band night. And believe me he is going to try.

     Sanjaya and his new hair were next, I think. He sang a very popular John
Mayer song, which many people like…when JOHN MAYER sings it. Poor kid, I swear
if I closed my eyes I would have thought we busted in on him in his bedroom with
the radio full blast, him standing in front of a mirror with a hair brush in his
hand and he was alternating using it as a microphone and brushing his hair
during the musical breaks. No doubt he has appeal, but he needs to stick to the
bedroom singing and leave the stage alone for a few years.

     Hmm, who was next, I have no idea so I’ll just pick Sundance. Why do I
always feel like I am in some smoke infested bar when he sings? I feel the need
to “Febreeze” myself after he finishes. He too picked a song I was not familiar
with. I think someone said it was a Pearl Jam song. Idol truly has gained the
rights to a larger catalogue of songs and these men are digging into that
catalog with fervor and pulling up some odd choices. He gave his standard holler
version of it and managed to make an up-tempo song quite uneventful.

     Jared took the stage and before singing revealed that he embraced singing
after giving up on a basketball career. What there were no other choices? Maybe
a career in medicine, dentistry or under water basket weaving might have worked
out better. I am just insulted. As a singer I don’t go on the basketball court
and try and dribble around professionals, so what makes him feel confident about
coming onto our court and dribbling boring notes? He’s not a horrible singer; he
stays in the key and has one or two pleasing notes that he uses over and over
and over and over again. He must have read the “Singing for Dummies” self help
book or maybe watched the “Secrets” DVD one too many times.

     Hmm Chris “boot leg Justin Timberlake” Richardson was next and I believe it
was a country song he picked to mangle. The tone was freaky; the execution
disjointed and just overall left a question my head. The question was…is this
Justin’s long lost brother and was he given up for adoption after they
discovered his lack of singing ability? I do have one positive for Chris though.
If he sings fast songs he is not as bad and he is just as good as many of the
current mainstream boy talent singing these days. How sad is that revelation?

     Brandon wins the award for my biggest disappointment of this season. I
really thought he was going to break the mold of “regular male singers” on Idol.
Anwar Robinson tried it Season 4, but had all the right ideas but not the
pleasing voice to match. Following suit, Brandon dug deep and pull up a song
that I am sure somebody other than the original performer knows. I was not that
someone. Not only was it “simple” it wasn’t even catchy. I am beginning to
wonder who he was singing background for. I think he mentioned Usher, hmm enough
said.

     Was Chris Sligh next? Do I care? Will they straighten his hair next week to
combat Sanjaya’s? These are the questions that are burning in my heart. Or is
that just heartburn? The song barrel was deep and Chris dug in. I have no clue
what the song was about. He has a decent voice and maybe when this is over he
and Brandon can form a cover band that covers obscure songs. Hey you have to
think ahead.

     Last up or maybe just last in my mind was Phil. What a strange looking man,
which will probably be his undoing. To add to his odd looks he decided he would
confuse everyone by doing a Leanne Rhymes (sp) song. I didn’t even recognize it
until he got to the chorus and by then I was trying to figure out how he was
going to make it through the rest of the song. Always a risk for a male to do a
song made popular by a female artist. Clearly he missed Anwar’s cover of Chaka
Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” which should have been “Ain’t No Man Really Going To Sound
That Great Covering A Female’s Song”. Oh well, live and learn.

     After the show, I felt it was time for Phil and Sanjaya to pack their bags,
but honestly after the sad offerings, they could have helped pack the bags of
Sundance and Jared also. After season three’s “Diva Domination”, Idol decided to
torture us by making it an even playing field. Clearly, this was to make the
tour appear more like a Disney production instead of a Pussycat Doll Revue. I
personally think it was a horrible decision.

     The Women
     I had an epiphany during the performances of the ladies and decided to group
them according. What I discovered, thanks to their own admissions, is that many
of these girls chose singing after they had failed or was forced out of other
ventures.

     First up was Jordan, who wanted to be a football player? Did I hear that
correctly? So when that didn’t work out she turned to singing. Too bad, she
would have made a great line backer. Her performance reminded me of the
sleepovers my sisters used to have, and there was always one girl who sang
louder and longer than anyone else.

     Next up was Sabrina, and I wish they would stop telling her that she has a
“big voice” for she does NOT. Loud and louder does not equal a big voice. She
actually sounds better when she pulls back. She also turned to singing after
giving up the dream of being a reporter. I guess she thought they both require a
microphone so the transition would be easy. Can someone say delusional?

     Antonella apparently was a nude violinist and when that didn’t work out she
decided to sing. She tried to capitalize on the popularity of Corrine Bailey
Rae, but unfortunately she has neither the appeal of Corrine nor the vocal
ability, which is really sad for Corrine really doesn’t have that much vocal
ability. Someone snap a picture and send this girl home.

     Haley, is that her name? Simon said he couldn’t remember it and neither
could I. Honestly, I thought she was already gone. I kept getting her mixed up
with Alaina. She gave up her dream of a gymnast due to injuries and naturally
turned to singing. Why, because it’s just the natural thing to do. Fail at one
thing turn to singing, because ANYBODY can sing. It doesn’t take training or
discipline like gymnastics.

     Stephanie has been singing since she was child and it shows, but if this
does not work out she is going to pick up a football or a violin and follow the
dreams of Jordan and Antonella. Hey it’s only fair. I love her voice but she
does have a tendency to study the original versions a little hard. She has
natural ability but is afraid folks won’t accept her interpretations of the
material. She will become more confident in time.

     Lakisha also seems that she has been singing for a long time, probably was
the lead singer on all the “gut busting” songs in the choir. Luckily for her if
singing doesn’t work out she can always turn to gymnastics or maybe become a
reporter, since there is room in those professions now. I am still not overly
impressed with her, but she is better than quite a few of the girls.

     Gina decided to unleash her rock side, which is what she was cast for. I
dare her try and go against what they hired her for. Given this “rock Gina”
emersion we now get treated to more loud and louder which Sabrina held the
title. I feel a Riccola sponsorship coming on.

     When the show started and I saw the line up and saw that Melinda was last, I
was like why do I have to suffer through the glee club girls until I get to the
professional. Thanks girls for being Melinda’s opening act. Truly she makes
everyone else in this competition look like they just gave up gymnastics,
violin, football playing, or dreams of being a reporter to become singers. Wait
a minute.

     So, it’s time for Antonella to pack her violin and wrap up in a towel and go
home and take the broken bone forgettable name chic with her.

     The Results

     So, no surprise that Jared was let go. Maybe he can pick up where his
basketball career failed or at least sing the National Anthem at a few games. I
was shocked Phil survived, not because he a bad singer but because I didn’t
think he was connecting with that many people. I must admit I was nervous; real
nervous to see Antonella and Stephanie up there together. The “vote for the
worst people site” log in a lot of votes and I thought they would push Antonella
over. THANK GOD that did not happen.

     Haley and Sabrina, what? The no name girl advances? Will Simon learn her
name now? Oh well I didn’t care that much for Sabrina anyway. Since she has
reporter experience I am sure we will see her as a commentator on the final
show.

     And the under 17 year old girls have spoken and Sanjaya prevails. Come on
are we surprised? We are talking about the demographic that made the Olsen Twins
multi-millionaires.

     So, now we have our top 12 and Diana Ross comes next week to upstage them
all. Will Sanjaya get even bigger hair for the event? Will Blake beat box and
scratch his way through “The Theme From Mahogany”? Will we hear a rock version
of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from Gina? Will Melinda, Lakisha and
Stephanie decide to join forces and become the Supremes? Will Brandon, Chris R.
and Chris S. join forces to become the Supremes? Will Haley wear a name tag for
the rest of the season? I can’t wait!

I am really excited!! Her demo/debut was pretty good with no
professional producers; and it seems like she may have made some
producer connections (even if they are smaller than the well known), i
cant wait to see what she comes up with!!
I just hope that; some big distrubution company picks up the release;
so i can get it in stores!! hehe...

I wish I saw this post in early december :(
