I've got to find a way to watch the new season of Doctor Who. I'm hoping all the
surprises won't be spoiled for me by the time I get to watch all seven episodes.
A few spoilers have leaked my way already... Sorry, I'm just 'poor me' blogging.
On the positive side, we have a new TV at my house so the PBS broadcasts of last
season's Doctor Who episodes look a lot better, not to mention my classic series
DVDs.

Another item of interest... Big Finish is holding a sale this week on some of
their earlier Doctor Who releases. They're putting a different set of audios on
sale each day until the week is over. Monday they had releases 1-10 on sale,
Tuesday is releases 11-20, etc. Doctor Who fans who want to try listening to the
audio adventures could download stories for $5.00 each this week. Just a
heads-up for you guys in case you missed the memo.

That's not correct - the BBC confirmed yesterday that Doctor who had been
commissioned for an additional 14 episodes with Matt Smith beyond the second
half of Series 6, but the airdates have not been released yet:

So, on what information are you making the claim that 2012 will be "only

The Guardian has reported a BBC spokesperson as saying (re the 14 episodes):

"The new commission is a big commitment, not many other shows have such a
commitment so far in advance. We do not know yet how many will air in 2012."

I see nothing on BBC.co.uk or doctorwhonews.net that yet confirms that there
will only be a handful of "specials" (i.e. episodes) in 2012 but it seems a
possibility.

"Fourteen new episodes of the sci-fi show, written by executive producer
Steven Moffat, have been commissioned.

However it is not yet known when the new episodes will be broadcast.

The corporation also confirmed there would be six more episodes of the
current series to be screened later this year and a 2011 Christmas
special starring Smith is planned."

Sounds like a normal series plus Christmas special next year to me.

I was just trying to point out that I can see where the confusion comes from.
Yes, there will be 14 new episodes. But since they don't know when they will
air, there may be another split season, with only a few of the episodes in 2012.
That might play out as analogous to the Specials year. But they will call it
series 7.1 instead of "specials".

I would imagine, too, that the BBC may want to wait until the second half of
Series 6 airs in the Autumn, and see how the ratings do in that time slot,
before committing to an air date for 2012. It could be that they are not sure
how the split Series will go over.

They'll be on DVD in mid-July. Also, I think Mayhem Comics in Des Moines runs
them on their TV, though you'd have to ask Jeremy when.

No Spoilers. Those were the two stories on last night. The first on BBC America
and the second on IPTV. I'm dealing with separate seasons but to me it shows the
both the high and low water mark's of the Matt Smith Doctor. The Doctor has been
pompous, arrogant, and pretentious before but last night's story was awful in
too many ways to go into without spoilers. This was then followed up by Vincent
and the Doctor, a very moving personal DW story. I'm just wondering if the rest
of the season is going to be more Demons Run. I hope not.

Well, I loved both episodes, myself! That's the great thing about Dr. Who to me
- it can do so many different types of stories, and bounces effortlessly between
them.

For the record, I think the best episode so far this year has been The Doctor's
Wife, but I think all have been excellent, with the exception of Curse of the
Black Spot. (Which wasn't terrible, but just didn't do it for me.)

I have to disagree with you on this one. I love this Doctor. I'm
loving some of the darkness that's coming out of this Doctor. It's
some of the Seventh Doctor's traits without all the plotting and
playing he was doing. Sometimes this Doctor is with us, sometimes
he's a step ahead. The trick is just figuring out which. IMHO it's
much more interesting and challenging this way.

Count me in on both those thoughts. I've been on and off about
Gaiman's books but after Doctor's Wife I think it's time to revisit
them and give them another chance. Any suggestions?

Also wasn't terribly thrilled by Black Spot either. It was okay but
didn't have any of those "wow" moments that a lot of the other
episodes have had.

I haven't read all of Gaiman's books, but "Neverwhere" is particularly Who-ish -
one of the characters in it is even based on the Doctor, to a certain extent.
And "Good Omens", co-written with Terry Pratchett, is also a favorite of mine,
although it is much more Pratchett in style than Gaiman, IMO.

I think you're missing the point entirely. The Doctor's arrogance is what
the story was about.

Remember last year when the Doctor did a speech every other episode about
how you wouldn't like him when he's angry? Remember when the last one was?
It was in The Pandorica Opens, when he berates all his old enemies ever to
back off while he finds out what's the reputedly terrible thing hidden in
the Pandorica. Then he opens the Pandorica and finds out it's empty,
because it's a trap for him by them.

This was the same thing on a grander scale. This is the payoff for the
reputation across Earth and across the universe that the Doctor's been
compiling since Kadiatu began studying him in Ben Aaronovitch's Transit
(or, if you want to speak of screen stories only, since Clive in Rose).
These are the consequences. The Doctor started out just a gentleman in a
box, but now he's become the highest authority, the lonely god, the
originator of the word "doctor" on half the planets across the universe
with meanings ranging from "healer" to "ultimate warrior". When Moffat
stated that the midseason cliffhanger would be a game-changer, this is
what he was talking about.

The Doctor's now been given a good look at the arrogance you're talking
about, and he's more disgusted than you are.

If you haven't, try to see the TV version of Neverwhere. Watch it in the
original 30 minutes episodes, not the edited together movie. It is simply one of
the best written TV shows (clever dialogue, pacing, foreshadowing, and backward
references) of all time.

It sounds like Neverwhere is the favorite so I'll start with that
one. Like the quote.

I have read Good Omens and liked it very much but Stardust was a dreadful bore.

I do love Neverwhere but the TV production was a little mishandled. (Per Neil,
who has dallied with the idea of redoing it as a movie). I found it hard to
watch but not because of the story. I should try again in the 30 minute episodes
as you say. But really, I loved it. I wanted very badly to name my daughter Door
but my husband wouldn't go for that. So we have a Coraline instead.

American Gods is also marvelous. HBO is making a 6 episode series of it. Also, I
love the short story "Chivalry".

This could be a difficult meeting because whatever Bill is likely to say about
this season's cliffhanger will probably be considerably different from what I
picked up watching it. To be an optimist, I hope that I have indeed missed the
point and that both great and small things happen in the second half of the
season. If I must keep my mouth shut about the TV show, I did read "The Murder
Game" a second Doctor novel that takes place in our near future. Ben and Polly
aren't Ian and Barbara or Amy and Rory but they were sort of a couple. The book
was enjoyable to read.
