At www.cinescape.com .........<br><br>Loeb Talks
'Buffy' Cartoon<br>Writer Jeph Loeb is talking about the
coming Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated TV series.
<br><br>While talking to the Comics Continuum, Loeb revealed,
"I am executive producing the show with Joss Whedon
(who is also Executive Producing), who created and
makes Buffy. He's incredibly focused, incredibly detail
oriented, and wonderfully creative. As a Buffy fan, I still
can't believe I'm in the same room with the guy! And
he's a comic book fan, so we have a lot of the same
references. We're really early on in the process, which is
why we can't discuss things like the animation house
and character voices, etc."<br><br>Loeb did talk
generally about what we can expect, saying, "Buffy fans
should be very pleased with what [Joss] has in mind.
What is so exciting is that animation allows Joss'
imagination to go in even more extraordinary directions.
We're currently writing Episode 1, putting together the
bible (the handbook for the show) and coming up with
stories for other fantastic new episodes."<br><br>Loeb
also cautioned that the coming program won't just be
an animated version of what we've seen before,
saying, "It has its own life, but we will be keeping the
tone and seeing the characters who have made Buffy
such an enormous hit -- Xander, Giles, Willow and... a
few surprises, too. Joss came up with a very unique
way that will allow us to 'stay within continuity'
and still tell tales Buffy fans don't yet know...At
the same time, if you've never seen the live-action
show, it will be very accessible. We want to break down
the same walls that Batman Animated did originally,
both in terms of style and content. So, Joss really
has set the bar very high. The truth is, he doesn't
want to do the show if it can't stand toe-to-toe with
Buffy and Angel, his live-action shows. His hallmark is
quality and this is no exception."
"Buffy" the Animated Slayer<br><br>Buffy the
Vampire Slayer is moving to Fox. Sort of. Sarah Michelle
Gellar and company still don't know what network they'll
end up on next season, but a new cartoon version of
the butt-kicking heroine has found itself a home on
Fox. <br><br>Buffy creator Joss Whedon has announced
that he's developing an animated, half-hour version of
his occult-o-rrific WB series, which will debut on
Fox's kid-oriented Saturday-morning schedule. No
airdate has been set, but Fox Kids President Maureen
Smith told advertisers Wednesday that it could debut as
early as February 2002. <br><br>While Whedon's
prime-time series has a dark theme, the Buffy mastermind
said the animated spinoff will primarily focus on "the
chosen one" as she deals with adolescence.
<br><br>"Buffy the Vampire Slayer the Animated Series is a great
opportunity to take our characters back to high school, back
to the painful and hilarious beginning of adulthood,
and tell all the stories we never got to tell about
Buffy and her friends," Whedon said in a statement.
"It'll be spooky, tough and epic, but with a constant
vein of lighthearted humor and the comfort of the true
affection this usual gang has for each other." <br><br>And
hey, maybe they can all drive around in the Mystery
Machine while they're at it! <br><br>Fox's announcement
comes while the fate of TV's original Buffy the Vampire
Slayer remains undetermined. It's still not known
whether Buffy producer 20th Century Fox Television will
be able to hammer out a new deal with its current
home, the WB--which initially had been unwilling to
shell out Fox's asking price of $2.3 million per
episode. <br><br>Other networks reportedly interested in
stealing Buffy away were said to include ABC, UPN
and--somewhat closer to home--the Fox Network. Insiders were
quoted by the Hollywood trade papers speculating that a
deal would be reached by this week. But the wait
continues.
