1994-95 Season

4-2-95(Sunday): NY Knicks vs NJ Nets 1:30pm(or maybe San Antonio vs Phoenix)

It was Phoenix-San Antonio, even upstate NY show Phoenix-SA over NY-NJ, I'm
guessing only WNBC showed NY-NJ. Which was a joke since there are more Knicks
fans in upstate NY than Suns or Spurs fans. But don't tell NBC that!

Reply #7 - 05/04/09 at 20:45:55 I believe that Game 4 of the '91 finals aired
at 7 ET(pregame/7:30 ET tipoff). NBC had planned to air it at 3:30 ET, but moved
it to prime time because of the spectacular ratings for Game 1, and the league
hasn't had an afternoon Finals game since.

Sat., 5/7: Nuggets @ Sonics, G5, 3:30 PM: Dick Enberg, Steve Jones (1st #8 to
beat a #1)

To this day, I still think Denver sold their souls to Satan to win that series-
they did nothing after that until drafting Carmelo in 2003.

Between both events- an absolute joke of a team.

or 1/21 NBC televised orlando @ phoenix. I specifically remeber the promos
during the nfl playoffs that year with the song that went "dream, dream,

One of the great days in ny sports history. You had the yankees playing the
mets on fox early. the belmont stakes with lemon drop kid spoiling
charasmatic's bid for the triple crown was in the middle and it was topped with
larry johnson's famous 4 point play at the garden.

I remeber WFAN ran a contest where the winner would attend all three events. I
think the final leg was a helicopter ride from belmot to the garden.
Unbelieveable day.

Reply #24 - Yesterday at 12:19:33 This is the most awesome thread ever. The
guys who compiled this are superhuman!

I remember getting mad during that 1997-98 season because it felt like the Bulls
were on NBC nearly every week, so it's surprising to look at the schedule and
see they weren't on nearly as much as I thought they were.

ABC Sports doesn't really exist; it's the Worldwide Leader that's pulling all
the strings for Disney, and it's so much easier (and more lucrative) to put a
game on ESPN or ESPN2 than to preempt "Desperate Housewives"--especially during
Ratings Month.

Sun., 5/7: Pacers @ Knicks, G1, 12:30 PM; Tom Hammond; Bill Walton (Reggie
Miller's 8 points in 19 seconds)
Sun., 5/7: Rockets @ Jazz, G5, 3:00 PM; Greg Gumbel, Steve Jones
Sun., 5/7: Bulls @ Magic, G1, 5:30 PM; Marv Albert, Matt Guokas

IMO, the most exciting day of NBA basketball I ever witnessed in person. Not
only was Reggie Miller's 8 points in 19 seconds was the ultimate WTF playoff
moment, you had the Rockets coming back to beat the Jazz, which for me was a big
deal because a) the Jazz were huge rivals of ours at the time and b) everyone
thought the Rockets were a huge disappointment that year and that Stockton and
Malone would wipe the floor with them in the Delta Center. I remember screaming
like a maniac after the Rockets won and my mother wondering what all the fuss
was about. (It only got worse when we beat Phoenix in round two with the Mario
Elie "Kiss of Death" three.)

And then that Bulls-Magic game was the infamous game where Jordan got stripped
from behind by Penny Hardaway in the final seconds, leading to the
game-clinching dunk by Horace Grant. The crowd was so loud you could barely hear
Marv Albert for, like, the entire fourth quarter. Far cry from today.

Sports Media Watch presents the 7 worst sports broadcasting moves of the past 10
years. Consider this sports broadcasting's version of the 7 deadly sins.

#7: NBC airs tennis on tape delay (NBC, all decade long)
Tennis is near the very bottom of the sports totem pole in the United States.
Still, if you're going to go through the trouble of airing tennis matches, you
should probably avoid antagonizing the small, but dedicated audience watching.

NBC's Wimbledon contract requires that it have exclusive coverage of the second
week of the tournament from 10 AM to 1 PM in all time zones each weekday (12 PM
to 5 PM on the Friday). The network would air a (sometimes) live block of
coverage on the East Coast, and then repeat that coverage in the Central,
Mountain and Pacific time zones.

Meanwhile, other matches would air on ESPN2, generally from 7 AM ET to 10 AM ET,
and then again from 1 PM ET to 5 PM ET. In other words, continuous tennis from 7
AM to 5 PM on the East Coast. However, in other time zones, because NBC holds
exclusivity from 10 AM to 1 PM, ESPN2's coverage would be blacked out for a
certain period of time. For example, in the Pacific time zone, ESPN2's morning
coverage would start at 4 AM and end at 7 AM, leaving a 3-hour block of nothing
until NBC's coverage began at 10 AM. When NBC's coverage would end at 1 PM local
time (4 PM ET), there would only be one hour of tennis left on ESPN2.

There were other annoyances, such as NBC airing matches on tape delay while live
tennis was taking place. In '09, the Andy Roddick/Andy Murray match began before
12 PM ET, when NBC's window was set to begin. Instead of airing the match live
on the East Coast at 12 PM, when it was in the third set with Roddick and Murray
tied at two sets apiece, NBC aired the match from the beginning -- thereby
ensuring that no live tennis would be seen (NYT, 7/3/09).

#6: The Pussycat Dolls, Rob Thomas, and the list goes on (ABC, 2002-present)
After John Tesh's Roundball Rock defined the NBA on NBC for 12 years, ABC
decided to go in a different direction for its NBA coverage.

So the network tapped Robert Randolph and the Family Band (We Got Hoops!,
2002-03), LL Cool J (Spurs-Nets Goin' To War, 2003), Justin Timberlake (Can't
Get Enough, 2003-04), the Black Eyed Peas (Let's Get it Started, 2004),
Destiny's Child (Lose My Breath, 2004-05), Rob Thomas (This is How a Heart
Breaks, 2005), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Runnin' Down a Dream, 2006), The
Pussycat Dolls (Right Now!, 2006-07), Tim McGraw and Def Leppard (Nine Lives,
2008), U2 (Get On Your Boots, 2009) and Mariah Carey (All I Want For Christmas
Is You, 2009) to sing the network's NBA anthem at various points during the
2000s.

That's a total of 11 different performers/groups for the NBA on ABC over the
course of 7 years, compared to 1 performer for the NBA on NBC over the course of
12 years.

In 2002, NBC spokesman Kevin Sullivan told ESPN.com that Roundball Rock was "a
great piece of music and it definitely became synonymous with the NBA on NBC
over the years. ... When you hear that music, you know exactly what's coming up"
(ESPN.com, 6/12/02). Seven years later, the NBA on ABC is synonymous with pretty
much any random pop group that wants to sell a CD.

#5: ABC bails on NASCAR for America's Funniest Home Videos (ABC, 2008)
ABC said all it needed to about its commitment to NASCAR's Chase for the Cup in
late 2008.

The 2008 Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500, the second-to-last race of NASCAR's
Chase for the Cup, had been delayed multiple times due to rain. The race had
been scheduled to last until 7:30 PM ET, but -- thanks to the delays -- was
threatening to potentially preempt some of ABC's much hyped Sunday night lineup.

To protect ABC's entertainment programming, the NASCAR race -- with 39 laps
remaining -- was moved to ESPN2 at 7:28 PM. America's Funniest Home Videos aired
in its place.

"I can't imagine being a race fan and being on the East Coast and trying to
watch this and then going to that [America's Funniest Home Videos]," driver
Jamie McMurray said after the race, "I mean, maybe if the President was going to
talk, maybe if something big had happened, but I can't believe that America's
Funniest Home Videos would take priority over us. I mean, I like the show, but
I'd rather watch the race" (si.com, 11/9/08).

#4: NBC airs Olympics on tape delay (NBC, all decade long)
NBC's insistence to air the Olympics on a tape delayed basis was annoying in
2000, more annoying in 2004, and reached the critical mass of annoyance in 2008.

The practice of tape delaying the marquee Olympic events to air in primetime may
have made more sense when viewers did not have the ability to easily find out
the results. But today, when viewers can easily find out the results via a
variety of methods, it seems more pointless and stubborn than anything else.

Even during the 2008 Olympics, when events were seen live on the East Coast,
they were tape delayed in other time zones -- meaning, for example, that West
Coast viewers had to wait until three hours after the fact to see Michael Phelps
win his record 8th gold medal of the 2008 Olympics.

Perhaps the worst use of this tape delay policy came in 2002, when the Winter
Olympics -- staged in Salt Lake City, UT -- were tape delayed on the West Coast
until 7:30 PM PT. From Seattle to Los Angeles, a live event airing just one time
zone away would air on a 2 1/2 hour delay.

#3: The Steve Harvey Show preempts ALCS Game 6 (TBS, 2008)
This was not a golden moment in the history of Turner Sports.

With Game 6 of the 2008 Red Sox/Rays ALCS underway -- potentially the deciding
game of the series -- viewers on TBS were left watching a rerun of The Steve
Harvey Show. Not surprisingly, most were less than thrilled.

The episode was a result of a router failure at Turner's Atlanta headquarters.
The error took place with "about five minutes remaining in the pregame show,
leaving TBS with little time to act," and "no choice but to put on taped
programming" (SBD, 10/20/08).

The first 20 minutes of the game were preempted thanks to the error. Viewers
missed the first six batters of the game, as well as a home run by the Rays'
B.J. Upton. Then-TBS play-by-play voice Chip Caray told viewers, "you didn’t
miss much" (bostonsportsmedia.com, 10/18/09).

#2: NBC bails on NHL overtime for Preakness pre-race (NBC, 2007)
Of all of NBC's poor scheduling decisions during the 2000s, this takes the cake.

On May 19, 2007, NBC aired most of Game 5 of the NHL's Eastern Conference Finals
between the Senators and Sabres. The game started at 2 PM ET, leading into NBC's
coverage of The Preakness Stakes at 4:30 PM. When regulation ended at 4:44 PM,
"it was clear that if NBC stuck with the game through at least one full
overtime, it would run over the first half-hour of Preakness coverage and
beyond" (New York Times, 5/22/07).

This was a possibility that NBC and the NHL had prepared for. The contingency
plan? Move coverage of overtime to NHL television partner Versus.

Not only was Versus in far fewer homes than NBC, but neither network did a very
good job alerting viewers to the situation. NBC offered just one "20-second
announcement made at the end of regulation," while "a foul-up at Versus' master
control" resulted in the World's Strongest Man competition airing for two
minutes instead of the game. NBC's decision was justified by the ratings, but it
still marked a fairly embarrassing moment in the history of televised sports.

#1: ABC previews movies during halftime of the NBA Finals (ABC, 2003)
Nothing epitomized ABC's tenure as an NBA broadcaster more than halftime of Game
6 of the 2003 NBA Finals.

With the Spurs and Nets playing in what would turn out to be the clinching game
of the series, ABC's halftime show did not feature analysis from Sean Elliott.
Instead, host Mike Tirico sat alongside the late Joel Siegel for an interminable
segment previewing the upcoming summer movie season.

Called one of the most "breathtakingly bizarre cross-promotions ever to hit
network television," (thehotbutton.com, 6/16/03), this 12-minute segment began
with a 2-minute trailer for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and ended with a
music video for Universal's The Incredible Hulk. The segment ended with Tirico
and Siegel, both wearing toy Incredible Hulk hands, pounding fists.

At the risk of sounding like Bill Walton, this was among the worst moments in
the history of sports broadcasting.

ies.html

Sports Media Watch presents the 5 biggest NBA-related stories of the past 10
years.

#5: Move to ESPN/ABC, Turner
The end of the NBA as a broadcast television property began in the fall of 2001,
and was completed in January of the following year. After 12 seasons of a hefty
presence on broadcast television (60 games on NBC seems unheard of now), the NBA
was headed primarily to cable.

The league's regular season presence on broadcast would be sliced in half, from
over 30 games on NBC to just 15 on newcomer ABC. In the playoffs, ABC was set to
air a minimum of just 5 games per season (now 8 under the current contract). To
put that in perspective, NBC often aired 6 playoff games on one weekend alone.

The All Star Game and the Conference Finals – two of the league's marquee events
– would move from broadcast to cable. Only the NBA Finals maintained its
previous level of broadcast exposure.

NBA Commissioner David Stern initially said that the cable-heavy television deal
would result in "a more concentrated audience and a higher rating" (Sports
Business Daily, 1/23/02). Stern: "The reduced number [of network telecasts] was
at our request. … The tripleheaders [on NBC] didn't work out as well as we would
have liked. We'll get a higher audience for [ABC's] single game" (USA Today,
1/22/02).

#4: Declining ratings
The NBA's decline in ratings has been a hot topic seemingly every year of the
decade, but was hastened – if not worsened – by the league's shift to cable in
'02.

Ratings for NBA games started to fall off during the 1999 Conference Finals (the
'99 regular season and the first part of the playoffs held generally steady from
the previous year). By the 1999-00 season, the league's ratings had begun
dropping steadily.

Regular season ratings on broadcast declined for 12 straight years, from 1995-96
to 2006-07. On at least three occasions this decade, the NBA has drawn its
lowest rating ever on broadcast television (the most recent coming in 2007, for
a Suns/Kings game on ABC).

More importantly, ratings for the NBA Finals fell dramatically – hitting a
21-year low in '02 and setting record-lows in '03 and '07. Since 2002, when the
NBA moved from NBC to ABC, the NBA Finals have averaged a single-digit rating
six times (2003, 2005-09). By comparison, the Finals never averaged a
single-digit rating on NBC.

During the 2000s, the NBA Finals averaged approximately 14.4 million viewers,
shedding 8 million viewers from the Jordan-fueled 1990s (appx. 22.4 mil).

While the new television deal has resulted in low ratings on broadcast, cable
television partners TNT and ESPN have drawn record numbers. The 5 most-viewed
NBA games ever on cable television have taken place during the 2000s, with 4 of
the games airing in 2009 alone. In 2008-09, TNT had its most-viewed regular
season since 1995-96 – during the NBA's Michael Jordan-fueled golden age.
Meanwhile, the 5 most-viewed basketball games in ESPN history are all NBA games.

And it should be pointed out that – while ABC's ratings have never been able to
match NBC's, either in the regular season or in the playoffs – regular season
ratings on the network have improved each of the past two seasons. In 2007-08
and 2008-09, the NBA on ABC outrated the MLB Game of the Week on FOX.

#3: Image problem
The NBA's image problem dates back decades. It was talked about during the 1990s
– especially during Michael Jordan's two-year absence – but the issue turned
into a blazing inferno during the 2000s.

Throughout the decade, the perception of NBA players was overwhelmingly
negative. ESPN's Gary Thorne called the league the nation's most "expensive
gang, if not the most dangerous" in 2004. Three years later, former baseball
broadcaster and TV writer Ken Levine referred to NBA players as "mean, arrogant,
scary looking, tattooed, prison inmates," who were "[n]ot exactly All-American
role models unless you're a gang member or skinhead" (Huffington Post, 2/17/07).

Even before the 2004 Pacers/Pistons brawl, NBA-related altercations were a major
story. In 2002, a preseason brawl between the Lakers and Kings made CNN's
American Morning. Since the Pacers/Pistons brawl, NBA fights have become an
event – in a way that fights in Major League Baseball and the NHL have never
been. A fight between the Knicks and Nuggets in '06 – no worse than a garden
variety baseball or hockey brawl – was talked about in-depth for days on NBC
Nightly News, ABC's World News Tonight and Good Morning America.

Even in situations where no NBA player was involved in wrongdoing, the league
was painted negatively. During the 2007 NBA All Star Weekend in Las Vegas, there
were several reports of violence – including a now-infamous incident involving
the NFL's Adam Jones. But it was the NBA and its players that took the brunt of
criticism, despite no player being involved in any illegal activity. As Mark
Cuban put it, "I have idiots e-mailing saying the [NBA] is at blame for some
incidents in Vegas because we can't keep our players like Pacman Jones under
control" (New York Times, 2/23/07).

#2: Tim Donaghy
As the NBA's negative image subsided towards the end of the decade, the Tim
Donaghy scandal thrust the league into another tailspin.

The Donaghy issue itself cannot be overstated. The fact that Tim Donaghy bet on
NBA games he officiated is arguably the worst thing that has happened to a
sports league in the 2000s. Where the scandal does begin to get overstated is
with the speculation surrounding how many other referees were involved, if any,
or whether the league purposefully affects games.

The primary fear after Donaghy's crimes came to light was that other referees
were involved. However, Donaghy said himself in a 2009 interview with ESPN that
he could not say that other referees bet on games. Donaghy's revelations that
referees have biases against certain players were not damning, but common
knowledge.

Donaghy has accused the NBA and its officials of conspiring to extend playoff
series for ratings and revenue. However, the evidence does not back that up.
Over the past 21 years, the NBA has had two Game 7s in the NBA Finals (one this
decade). Meanwhile, Major League Baseball has had four Game 7s in the World
Series (two this decade), and the NHL has had six in the Stanley Cup Finals
(five this decade).

Since 2002, the NBA has had just one Game 7 in the Conference Finals
(Pistons/Heat in '05). In that same span, baseball's League Championship Series
has had seven Game 7s, and the NHL Conference Finals has had three.

In other words, if the NBA is rigging results to extend series, then it is not
doing a very good job. Other Donaghy claims have been debunked as well, but he
continues to hold significant credibility with NBA fans.

The NBA's personnel do not help the league's case. Players, coaches and local
broadcasters complain about just about every call, and fans of every team --
even the Lakers and Celtics -- seem to believe the league is biased against
them. Case in point, ESPN's Bill Simmons recently complained about the Celtics'
loss to the 76ers (just the team's 5th loss in their first 25 games),
essentially accusing referee Bill Kennedy of giving the game to the 76ers.
Simmons: "Donaghy went 80 percent because of situations like the one you gave us
tonight in Boston. The truth hurts" (Twitter, 12/18/09).

#1: The sky is falling
The biggest story in the NBA over the past 10 years has much to do with the
other items on this list. Since 2000 (and really, since 1994, when Sports
Illustrated put out its infamous "Why the NHL's hot and the NBA's not" cover),
the NBA has been perceived to be on the edge of collapse.

If one problem went away (the `thug' issue seems to have temporarily died down),
then another rose to the forefront (the league is rigged). Everything was a sign
that the league was in decay, from TNT promoting the NBA Finals on ABC (one
writer called this something "you often see from media outlets covering
struggling start-up leagues"), to players not smiling before games (the players
in a Rookie/Sophomore game were blasted for this in an `07 Broadcasting & Cable
article).

With all of the NBA's problems over the past 10 years, one would imagine that
the league would be in terrible shape. After all, the players are criminals, the
referees manipulate results and nobody's watching. The league should be on its
last legs.

That is, unless the league's problems have been grossly overstated – not just by
critics, but by supporters as well.

After all, the NBA's decline in television ratings is hardly unique. Like the
NBA Finals, the World Series also shed 8 million viewers during the 2000s (from
27.3 million in the 1990s to 19.3 million during the 2000s), and very few have
argued that Major League Baseball is in need of a savior – in the way that Vince
Carter, LeBron James and Greg Oden were viewed as much-needed saviors of the
NBA.

Despite the ballyhooed image problem, the NBA has far fewer fights than Major
League Baseball and the NHL. And, though this is probably jinxing the league,
when the was the last time the NBA had to deal with a walking PR disaster like
the NFL's Michael Vick, Adam Jones or Plaxico Burress?

And while the Donaghy situation (as has been said before) is legitimately
damaging, there is very little substance to his claims about other referees,
other than rumor and innuendo.

Overall, the 2000s brought much hand-wringing in regards to the NBA. Everything
was a problem – the players, the officiating, the ratings, the quality of play,
the new ball, the dress code, the Sonics moving, just to name a few. Other
sports have had similar issues – baseball (steroids, the Expos fiasco, umpiring
controversies) and the NFL (an image problem that should by all rights be worse
than the NBA's) – and have largely avoided the sky-is-falling mentality
surrounding the NBA.

TBS did not have a national NBA package until 85-86; previously they did do
Atlanta Hawks games on WTBS, which was carried on cable systems in most of the
country, but was actually an individual team, not league-wide package

highest non-postseason rating for ABC. That was the best christmas game I have
ever seen. Also being a Cavs fan, their win over the Lakers felt pretty good
even though both ABC games this year was not that good.

#1: NBA re-signs with NBC (2002)
In 2002, the NBA signed a six-year deal with ESPN/ABC and Turner, spurning
previous rights-holder NBC. The deal changed the face of sports television,
virtually eliminating the NBA's broadcast presence. Since that deal, Monday
Night Football, the Bowl Championship Series and one of the MLB League
Championship Series have also moved to cable.

What would have happened had the NBA accepted NBC's four-year deal, which would
have lasted through the 2005-06 season?

NBC would have aired far more games than ABC, and ratings would have been
substantially higher. However, compared to previous years on NBC, ratings would
still have hit historic lows. Take the '03 Spurs/Nets NBA Finals as an example.
The 6.5 average rating for that series was a product of a variety of factors,
not the least of which was confusion about where the games were airing, lack of
promotion, and lack of a broadcast presence through the playoffs. Had NBC
resigned with the NBA, continuing the status quo (i.e., double and tripleheaders
throughout the postseason, promotion, consistency, etc.), there is little doubt
that the ratings for that series would have been higher.

However, in all likelihood, the Spurs/Nets series would still have ended up
averaging a single-digit rating (perhaps an 8.5 instead of a 6.5). Though the
ratings would have been higher compared to what ABC drew under the current deal,
they would have been disastrously low by NBC standards.

NBC would have also aired far more games than ABC, which typically airs less
than 20 games during the regular season. That said, with ratings having dropped
significantly during the previous deal, it would not have been surprising had
NBC cut back on the number of games it aired – eliminating some tripleheaders
and avoiding 5:30 PM ET starts that bled into primetime.

In other words, ratings would still have dropped (though not as sharply) and
there would still have been fewer games on broadcast. And it would have been
entirely plausible that the NBA and NBC would have parted ways anyway at the end
of the 2005-06 season.

What would the effect have been on other sports? For one, the NHL stays with
ESPN. If the NHL had been the only professional winter sport on ESPN, the
network would have been more reluctant to sever ties with the league.

Meanwhile, NBC may have been less willing to work out a deal with the NFL in
2005. After all, the network would have been shelling out – and losing –
millions and millions of dollars on its NBA deal -- and taking on another
expensive sports television contract may not have seemed ideal.

Additionally, without the NBA setting the precedent, perhaps other sports would
have been hesitant to move marquee programming to cable. In 2005, with the NBA's
marquee events still on broadcast, maybe the NFL hesitates to put its crown
jewel, Monday Night Football, on cable television. If the NFL doesn't put Monday
Night Football on cable, perhaps Major League Baseball thinks twice about
putting an LCS on TBS. And so on and so forth.

.html

Sports Media Watch presents the ten worst personnel moves of the 2000s.

#10: Al Michaels as lead NBA play-by-play voice (2004-05, ABC)
This seemed like a good idea at the time. After all, Michaels added credibility
to ABC's NBA telecasts, and was an instant upgrade over predecessor Brad
Nessler.

So what was the problem? For one, lack of commitment. During his two season
tenure as ABC's lead NBA analyst, Michaels called just 13 of a possible 26
regular season games, with all but two games taking place from either Los
Angeles (where he resides) or Sacramento.

More important was the fact that Michaels, to quote the Dallas Morning News'
Barry Horn, was simply "not a basketball guy" (Sports Business Daily, 6/27/05).
He put in a decent performance during each of the games he called, but he lacked
the kind of enthusiasm and confidence expected of a #1 play-by-play voice.

On occasion, he seemed unsure of himself. For example, when Amare Stoudemire
famously blocked Tim Duncan during the '05 playoffs, Michaels was hesitant to
call it a block at first, instead calling it a "great, great contested shot." He
had a lackluster performance towards the end of the one of the great playoff
games of the decade (Game 5 of the '05 Finals), culminating with a mediocre call
on Robert Horry's game winning shot.

Overall, it was clear that basketball was not his area of expertise. And it was
easy to get the feeling – as Bill Simmons did during the '05 Finals – that
Michaels "shows up for these games, does his job, then drives home thinking,
`Only five weeks to the [NFL] Hall of Fame Game, I'm almost there!'" (SBD,
6/23/05).

#9: Brad Nessler as lead NBA play-by-play voice (2002-03, ESPN/ABC)
Marv Albert is a tough act to follow. Just ask Brad Nessler, who served a
one-year stint as the voice of the NBA.

ESPN/ABC tapped Nessler in '03 to be the lead play-by-play voice for NBA games,
pairing him with Bill Walton (and adding Tom Tolbert later on). Nessler was a
veteran announcer, having called college football and basketball games, but
lacked experience broadcasting the NBA.

It showed. Nessler was not horrifically bad, but merely out-of-place. Maybe he
would have been a better fit as a #3 or #4 broadcaster for NBA games, but as the
lead he was woefully inadequate. He stammered often (welcome to the "ABA... the,
uh, NBA on ABC"), and – like his replacement, Al Michaels – seemed somewhat
unsure of himself at times.

As the New York Times' Richard Sandomir said during the '03 playoffs, Nessler
"does not know game strategy well, lacks rhythm and enthusiasm in his game call,
does not bring out the best in his partners, Bill Walton and Tom Tolbert, and
too often ignores the score" (SBD, 5/2/03).

After the '03 NBA Finals were the lowest rated in history, ABC decided to clean
house -- replacing Nessler with Michaels.

#8: Lisa Guerrero on Monday Night Football (2003, ABC)
Though she was "replacing Melissa Stark, not Sam Donaldson," as Barry Horn
pointed out (SBD, 6/30/03), Lisa Guerrero's presence on the Monday Night
Football sidelines became a lightning rod for the media. From the very
beginning, the decision was viewed as another example of looks taking precedence
over talent, and that was exacerbated by an FHM shoot that came out just before
her debut.

"Guerrero is offensive to any female with brains," the Denver Post's Mark Kiszla
wrote shortly after her first regular season game, "Guerrero insults any male
who not only loves the game, but respects it in the morning" (SBD, 9/9/03).
Another writer said Guerrero was "there strictly as eye candy for the
predominantly-male audience, and to pretend otherwise is to even further insult
whatever intelligence that audience may have" (SBD, 9/17/03).

Those reviews may be harsh, but Guerrero did not exactly acquit herself well. In
her very first regular season game, she asked Washington QB Patrick Ramsey
"about his pregame conversation with former teammate Laveranues Coles" -- a
perfectly harmless question, except for the fact that Ramsey and Coles had just
become teammates, and the conversation in question had taken place between Coles
and Jets' QB Chad Pennington (sportscentral.org, 8/19/06). The error was later
mocked on SportsCenter by John Anderson and Stuart Scott.

Fairly or unfairly, the gaffe only bolstered the perception that she was hired
solely for her looks -- competence notwithstanding. Guerrero lasted only one
year before being replaced by Michele Tafoya.

#7: Tim Hardaway on NBA Shootaround (2002-03, ESPN)
Don't you have to audition for these jobs?

Hardaway was ESPN's lead NBA studio analyst during the first half of the 2002-03
season. But as he showed later in the decade with his less-than-eloquent
comments about homosexuality, he did not have a way with words. As Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel writer Bob Wolfley noted, English was Hardaway's "second
language. Maybe third. ... Even if you allow for some measure of informal street
dialect, Hardaway's lexicon is way beyond the line. Beyond that, his analysis is
barely ordinary." (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 11/15/02).

In another article, The Sporting News deemed Hardaway ESPN's "hip-hop equivalent
to [Monday Night Football reporter] Eric Dickerson," noting that Dickerson at
least "tried to speak English" (The Sporting News, 12/9/02). The Miami Herald
called Hardaway "perhaps the worst network commentator in history" (Miami
Herald, 4/11/03).

ESPN replaced him with Greg Anthony in late December, moving him to a lower
profile role. Hardaway returned to the NBA in '03.

#6: Bryant Gumbel calls NFL games (2006-08, NFL Network)
Bryant Gumbel seemed about as suited to call NFL telecasts as fictional
characters Frasier and Niles Crane.

Gumbel, the first play-by-play voice for NFL telecasts on NFL Network, was
horribly miscast. Often, he appeared unfamiliar with some aspects of the NFL,
making it hard to imagine him even choosing to watch games in his spare time.
Take this summary of his performance during an '06 game: "He mispronounced
Terrell Owens' first name, referred to Falcons WR Michael Jenkins as "Mike
Jennings," [and] called the 30-second play clock the "shot clock" (SBD,
12/18/06).

Those mistakes did not go away with time; during a game in '07, he called
Cowboys' QB Tony Romo "Rick Romo" (SBD, 12/3/07), and during another game, he
"violated an announcer rule when he didn't wait for the referee to signal the
result of a field goal" (SBD, 12/7/07).

Worst of all, Gumbel lacked enthusiasm, appearing -- even if unintentionally --
to not really care about the games he was calling. Newsday's Neil Best in '07:
"[Gumbel] seemed barely awake at times [on Saturday]. ... His worst trait is
being understated to the point of missing the story and drama" (SBD, 1/3/07).

#5: Dave O'Brien calls the World Cup (2006, ESPN)
As seen earlier in this list, it is not often a good idea to have an announcer
call a sport with which he is unfamiliar – or is perceived to be unfamiliar.

Dave O'Brien was an outsider on arguably the biggest stage in sports – the World
Cup. While he was not terrible, and received praise from some critics, he was
never accepted by soccer purists – and that is putting it lightly. He was
"eviscerated by [soccer] diehards" to the point that a petition protesting his
presence on World Cup telecasts "drew more than 5,000 signatures" (Sports
Illustrated, 7/20/06).

He did not help his cause when he lashed out at said purists: "I'm a baseball
guy. And that's a dirty word among soccer enthusiasts. ... There's kind of a
petulant little clique of soccer fans. There's not many of them, but they're
mean-spirited" (SBD, 6/14/06).

Though several media critics said that he improved as the World Cup went on,
soccer fans were not too pleased with having to deal with a work in progress on
the sport's biggest stage. As then-ESPN ombudsman George Solomon noted: "the
selection of someone with so little soccer experience to cover the world's
biggest soccer event was a mistake" (ESPN.com, 8/1/06).

#4: Chip Caray on MLB/TBS (2007-09, TBS)
What was it about Chip Caray that made him so hated by the critics? Was it his
"frequently (and ridiculously) loud" voice, as Richard Sandomir suggested in
'07? His mistakes, like when he famously referred to a lineout as a base hit in
an extra inning one-game playoff? Perhaps it was his love of the clichι, almost
to the point of seeming like a parody of a sports broadcaster.

No matter what the reason, Caray was one of the most critiqued broadcasters in
recent memory -- especially during years when the Yankees were in the playoffs,
opening him up to the ire of the New York sports media critics.

Criticism of Caray reached a fever pitch during the 2009 postseason. Caray had a
"horrendous, error-prone postseason" (Wall Street Journal, 12/2/09), during
which his "mistake-laden, wait-is-he-actually-watching-these-games? work ...
humiliated both him and the network" (New York Magazine, 12/2/09). How bad was
it? Consider these comments after TBS ended its playoff coverage: "We survived
Chip Caray," and "Our long national nightmare is over" (SBD, 10/22/09).

Weeks after the end of the '09 postseason, Turner and Caray parted ways.

#3: Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football (2006-08, ESPN)
Everybody lined up to take their swings at Tony Kornheiser during his tenure on
Monday Night Football.

From former MNF producer Fred Gaudelli to onetime colleague Joe Theismann – and
all the sports media critics in between – Kornheiser was an obvious target for
criticism. After all, Kornheiser, the Washington Post writer and Pardon the
Interruption co-host, had no place in the booth.

More conditioned to discussing storylines than X-and-Os, Kornheiser's very
presence turned Monday Night Football into something resembling what Theismann
would later call an "issue oriented" broadcast. In the studio, he may have been
a better fit. But on games, he was a distraction.

Perhaps that would have been okay if Kornheiser was at least as entertaining on
games as he was on Pardon the Interruption. But during his three season tenure
on Monday Night Football, Kornheiser seemed aimless, pointless, and occasionally
awkward, growing more comfortable only after Theismann was replaced by Ron
Jaworski.

#2: Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football (2000-02, ABC)
Monday Night Football has been obsessed with stunt casting during this decade –
from Guerrero and Kornheiser to John Madden. But the boldest move of all came at
the start of the decade, when comedian Dennis Miller was added to the broadcast
booth.

If the move was made to generate buzz, it certainly succeeded. Miller's hiring
was a huge story at the time, even making the cover of Sports Illustrated. If
the move was made to attract viewers, it was a flop. Viewership for Monday Night
Football declined in both of the years Miller served as an analyst, rising the
season after he left.

The general consensus in the media was that Miller would either rejuvenate
Monday Night Football or be a gigantic failure. As Ed Sherman noted, "Miller
will either be a terrific hit, or he will turn the broadcasts into awkward
flaps. There will be no middle ground" (SBD, 6/23/00). Except, there was indeed
middle ground. Miller wasn't necessarily bad. He wasn't necessarily good,
either. Despite all the buzz and the hype, Miller was neither a savior nor a
villain.

In fact, that may have been the biggest problem for Miller. He was supposed to
be at least reminiscent of Howard Cosell, inspiring intense love or intense
hatred. However, instead of being a major cultural icon, he turned into just
another guy in the booth. "[H]is presence added nothing," one reviewer noted
(SBD, 1/9/01). By the end of his tenure, Miller had "toned down the act that
made him radioactive in 2000," contributing more "cogent football talk" than
expected (New York Times, 1/15/02). Why get cogent football talk from a comedian
when you can get it from someone with actual expertise?

ABC was prepared to bring Miller back for a third season in '02, until John
Madden became available. Then they unceremoniously dumped him (and fellow
analyst Dan Fouts).

#1: Rush Limbaugh on Sunday NFL Countdown (2003, ESPN)
Political beliefs will no doubt shape how people view this move.

Limbaugh, the conservative talk radio host, was a literal sideshow. During his
brief tenure on Sunday NFL Countdown, his set was segregated from the main cast
(one writer referred to it as "ESPN's version of the kiddie table"). He would
"deliver a short commentary each week, and then ... have three chances to
'challenge' something that someone else is saying" (Salon.com, 7/15/03).

Limbaugh received mixed reviews. Some did not find him to be particularly
noteworthy, despite the hype. He "didn't really add much," one reviewer said of
his debut (SBD, 9/5/03). Others approved of the move, including the Times'
Sandomir, who called it "by far the most significant and successful change to
the NFL studio programs" (SBD, 9/9/03).

Where did it all go wrong? In late September '03, Limbaugh trashed Donovan
McNabb, saying that he didn't think the Eagles' QB had been "good from the
get-go," and attributing his success to the media being "desirous that a black
quarterback do well" (SBD, 9/30/03). The comments resulted in a major media
firestorm and Limbaugh's resignation.

But while Limbaugh was roundly criticized, he was merely doing the job for which
he had been hired. As ESPN's Mark Shapiro noted after Limbaugh's comments about
McNabb, "We brought Rush in for no-holds-barred opinion. Early on, he has
delivered" (SBD, 10/1/03). Limbaugh later said that ESPN "told him to crank up
the volume on his football-show essays," and that there were "some people who
said, 'Your essays aren't edgy enough'" (SBD, 10/7/03).

The mistake here lies not with Limbaugh, but with ESPN. Keep in mind the
Limbaugh hiring came during the same period as Playmakers, Dream Job and other
frantic attention grabs. Hideously bad decisions were a hallmark of ESPN in the
early 2000s. The decision makers behind the Limbaugh hiring knew what they were
getting into.

In the increasingly annoying habit of ESPN using mainstream music artists to
introduce programming or be a theme throughout a season, we have yet another
example of this for Christmas Day. ESPN will be utilizing a video from Mariah
Carey that will be seen on both the Mothership and ABC. Not being an NBA or

http://sportsmediawatch.blogspot.com/2009/11/abc-to-be-shut-out-of-nba%20-confer\

The 2010 NBA Conference Finals could be a cable exclusive affair.

Sports Business Journal reports that ESPN is slated to air the entire 2010
Eastern Conference Finals. In previous years, ESPN sister network ABC has aired
at least one game of the Conference Finals.

This would be the first time since 2004 that not a single game of the NBA
Conference Finals has aired on broadcast television.

If none of the NBA's second round series goes to a 7th game, ABC could still
conceivably air Game 1 of the Conference Finals on a Sunday afternoon -- as was
done in '07 (Jazz/Spurs Game 1), '05 (Spurs/Suns Game 1) and '03 (Nets/Pistons
Game 1).

The move comes months after the NBA's three television partners drew superb
ratings during the Conference Finals. The Lakers/Nuggets and Magic/Cavaliers
series averaged 8.6 million viewers, and included the 4 most-viewed NBA games
ever on cable. Overall, ratings for the Conference Finals were the highest since
'02, when NBC carried the bulk of the games.

The strong numbers came despite only one of the games airing on ABC -- and that
game was only the 7th-most viewed of the round.

The ratings success, achieved largely without the aid of a broadcast television
showcase, has evidently emboldened ESPN.

ESPN EVP of content John Skipper told Sports Business Journal that the
"continuity" of having all the games on one network is "more important than the
[household] differential" between ESPN (99 million homes) and ABC (114 million).
Skipper: "We are going to clearly position that for sports, there is no
significant differentiation between broadcast and cable."

The numbers appear to back him up. Excluding the NBA Finals, ABC averaged 5.3
million viewers for the playoffs as a whole, not much higher than ESPN's 4.9
million and TNT's 4.7 million.

ABC's lead looks even less impressive when one considers that the network only
aired 10 playoff games prior to the Finals -- and those 10 games were generally
the highest-profile games of the day. Meanwhile, ESPN and TNT aired nearly all
of the other playoff games -- including series without much mainstream appeal
like Magic/76ers or Rockets/Blazers.

Overall, ABC appears to be less and less of a priority for ESPN. The entire Bowl
Championship Series will air on ESPN starting in 2011 -- including the Rose
Bowl, which had previously been an ABC staple. The signs were evident early in
the college football season as well, when ESPN saved one of the biggest Saturday
night games of the season for itself (USC/Ohio State) rather than air it on
ABC's Saturday Night Football.

And there's the fact that ABC will air only 15 regular season NBA games this
year, the bare minimum, and the fewest since 2002-03.

With this in mind, how long before the NBA Finals becomes a cable exclusive
affair as well?

Unless there are major changes, ABC will air its fewest amount of NBA games
since 2002-03.

ABC is currently scheduled to air only 15 NBA telecasts during the 2009-10
season, the minimum amount of regular season games the network is contractually
obligated to air, and the fewest NBA games on the net since 2002-03.

Coverage will begin on Christmas Day, with Magic/Celtics and Cavaliers/Lakers.
Following Christmas Day, ABC will take a hiatus of over a month -- the longest
since '02-'03 -- before airing Nuggets/Spurs and Lakers/Celtics on January 31.

ABC is not scheduled to air games on either March 21 or March 28, when the NCAA
Tournament will be taking place. This marks the first time since the 2004-05
season that ABC has taken a Sunday off, excluding the All-Star break. ABC
traditionally draws its lowest NBA ratings of the season opposite the NCAA
Tournament.

Despite airing just 15 games, ABC will heavily feature the Lakers, Celtics,
Cavaliers and Magic during the 2009-10 season. The Lakers and Celtics will each
have 6 appearances, while the Cavaliers and Magic will each have 5. ABC will air
two Cavaliers/Celtics games (March 14 and April 4) and two Cavaliers/Magic games
(Feb. 7 and April 11).

ABC will only air games involving 8 teams next season -- the aforementioned
Lakers, Celtics, Cavaliers and Magic, and the Spurs (3 appearances), Nuggets (3
appearances), Suns (1 appearance) and Blazers (1 appearance). The Blazers'
appearance, an April 11 game against the Lakers, will be their first on
broadcast since 2003.

The lack of NBA games on ABC is surprising, considering that NBA regular season
ratings have increased for two consecutive seasons. In 2008, the NBA regular
season on ABC even topped MLB regular season coverage on FOX.
