The room was illuminated by nothing except the dim glow from the screens of
the monitors set up around a small workstation. Angelo sat almost statue still
except for his flickering eyes. His gaze moved back and forth across the bank of
four monitors upon which flashed pictures, news headlines, and other seemingly
unconnected data at a rapid pace.
Other than his eyes and the flickering images the only movement was when
his hand absently moved to pick up a caramel corn cluster and occasional peanut
from the spilled box of Crackerjacks that lay nearby. He would pop it into his
mouth, chew a few times and then after a variable pause time would repeat the
action, all without seeming to even be aware of doing it.
A sliver of light grew to a larger rectangle as a door opened into the room
and a man in a faded suit walked up to stand behind the figure seated before the
monitors, "Where is Jared Angelo? Where will we find him?"
At the sound of the man's voice Angelo's face twitched slightly and his
eyes seemed to slightly focus as he let the swivel chair he sat in turn slowly
rotate counterclockwise till he was semi-facing the man, "Angelo ….. doesn't ……
know", he said in a slow broken statement. His face and body twitched, "Angelo
will ….. keep ….. Looking." The chair continued its counterclockwise spin and
stopped facing the screens once more. Angelo stopped twitching and his eyes
seemed to lose some of their focus once more.
The man sighed as he crossed the room back to the still ajar door. He
looked over his shoulder "find him Angelo. Find him and tell us as once." Then
he exited the room, closed the door and was gone.
His eyes flicked across the screens and his hand went back to its random
crackerjack retrieval, "Angelo will look", he said with a small twitch. In the
dim light from the monitors a sudden small twisted smile appeared on his face,
although his eyes never left the screens or changed from their semi-glazed
watching of the monitors. Then in an almost inaudible whisper added, "but Timmy
already knows", then the smile too was gone once more.
