If it aint broke, don't fix it. CFCF's current studio is the best one in the
CTV network, thanks to it being the old Pulse studio (I think). It actually
looks like a news set, unlike what other CTV stations use.

But I don't mind the Toronto design. Vancouver and Halifax are okay, and I
can stand Sudbury. The new Edmonton one isn't as bad as the one on CKCO,
CJOH, and others.

Noticed tonight's newscast was from the news room... Possibly a hint
that new studios are on their way? Will they be the same as the
Edmonton and Toronto local designs? Guess we'll just have to wait and
see...

Their current set is the one they brought over from Ogilvy ave. If
the work is only being done over this weekend, it's probably just
some superficial stuff they are doing, perhaps they are putting in a
new anchor desk or something.

If CTV's next step really is to make all the local newscasts have the
same set, then Lloyd Robertson robotic clones must be in the planning
stages.

It's probably the 1995ish studio.

Seems that it turned out to be a new desk, a few backround thingys, and
some new monitors. No Lloyd clones as of yet.

Could they increase the power now that they're owned by Equity

The new desk is not bad, although they may have over did it with the bright
lighting. It
looks like something a bartender would stand behind at a club.

Maybe WGMU-CA could change its calls to WVCW-CA.

It's a very "loud" set. Kind of the sci-fi look. I really don't know
what was wrong with the old one, it looked pretty sharp.

Global National moving to new timeslot

By BILL BRIOUX -- Toronto Sun

Kevin Newman will check in at 5:30 with Global National. (David
Lucas, Sun)
Canadians tend to switch allegiances with their nightly newscasts
about as infrequently as they switch federal political parties. For
Global's Kevin Newman, the mood to choose change can't come at a
better time.

Global is betting that the 46-year-old former CBC and ABC newsman can
connect with the next generation of Canadian news consumers. After
four-and-a-half years as the face of Global National, Newman says
they've got the right newscast. Now they just have to fix the hour.

It's a step they take today as, for the first time all across the
country, Global National With Kevin Newman relocates to 5:30 p.m.,
leading directly into local newscasts (such as Toronto's steadily
building Global News Hour With Leslie Roberts now on at 6 p.m.).

This new bit of Global positioning is the latest assault in Canada's
highly competitive news wars. Shortly after the federal election, CTV
and CBC ran full page ads in newspapers across the country
proclaiming election night wins.

"CBC's numbers were the right ones, to be honest," says Newman, who
was in Toronto last week (Global National is based in Vancouver). He
pointed out that CTV's ever-skewered spin included Newsnet viewers
but didn't count CBC Newsworld. Regional viewers who caught Global's
election night coverage on various CH stations were also discounted.

"If you level the playing field, we were third, but just by about
125,000 viewers," says Newman.

Long considered also-rans, Global National now ranks as Canada's No.
2 newscast and is in fact dominant west of Ontario. The surprise is
that CTV News isn't further ahead given their advantage in number of
stations plus the wide lead they enjoy in prime time with 10 p.m.
hits like ER and Grey's Anatomy.

Still, news audiences are as entrenched as glaciers. Could there be a
Global warming?

Newman figures it takes 10 years to turn around viewing habits. In
four-and-a-half years at the helm of Global National, he's tried to
provide an alternative newscast, one that is a little jazzier, more
in tune with the Jon Stewart generation.

He believes that younger viewers are getting much of their daily news
from comedians like Stewart. "I think what Jon Stewart has done is
given us the ability to say, when things are ridiculous, that this is
a little crazy," says Newman, who has tried to work that tone into
his newscasts. "I think that's the true power of him."

Newman says he doesn't have much time to watch the competition and,
besides, "you don't win in the long term by trying to ape anybody,"
he says. "You have to define what the next thing is and then work at
it for 10 years so that when the demographic changes, when the
loyalties begin to pull apart, you're whole and you're different
enough that people go, 'Oh, okay, there you are.'"

It doesn't hurt that Newman is more than a generation younger than
his main news rival. CTV's Lloyd Robertson turned 72 last month.
CBC's Peter Mansbridge is 57.

In the U.S., after 20 years of Rather/Jennings/Brokaw, all three
major networks have recently switched to younger anchors. There's
talk of reinventing network news and getting away from the one
anchor, voice of God approach that dates back to Edward R. Murrow and
Walter Cronkite.

Newman isn't so sure that will work. He wonders about ABC's
experiment with dual anchors Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff
(already at risk with Woodruff's serious injuries in Iraq last week).
The advantage of a sole anchor, he feels, is that they protect and
personalize the news. "Those broadcasts succeed when people know the
anchor and feel the anchor is connected to the content," he says.

Getting the news out of its hemorrhoid ad rut and in front of younger
eyeballs is also crucial, says Newman, who notes that the average age
of a U.S. network news viewer is 63. He's all for iPod, cellphone and
broadband news streaming. "Getting to be in the Top-25 in iTunes
really matters," he says. "If we're not figuring out how to reach
these people, we're failing."

As for the earlier, 5:30 hour (his competitors air at 10 p.m. and 11
p.m.), Newman says its a good fit. "We're never going to be the
newscast for the elite, but my style's probably more comfortable with
that anyway," he says. He'll take the crowd coming home from work,
even if he has to stand on his head to get them. "I'm a little more
energetic, too," he says. "People are moving then. At 10 and 11,
they're not. You have to actually go, 'Hey, come over here.'"

Speaking of age, how old are Haughland and Britt? I figure the former
must be in his mid-sixties, and I remember reading that the latter
past sixty about a decade ago, although I may be wrong. If Britt is
pushing 70, he looks fantastic for a man of his age, that's for
sure...

What a nice move, since most newscasts air @ 6pm, and they've gotta
simulcast EVERY station with newscasts.

I watch WNNE 31 down here, but don't plan on recording anything in
particular.
If anyone wants something specific recorded, let me know.

Canadian cable association shutting down

OTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association says
that after 50 years of representing the country's cable companies, it
is shutting its doors for good.

The announcement was made by the CCTA board of directors
Friday. "Over the past 10 years, convergence has radically changed
the nature of the cable business and there is no longer a 'one size
fits all' solution," association chairman Dean MacDonald said in a
statement.

It all began in the 1950s with community antenna television services,
but with the industry now involved in telephony, Internet and
wireless, the CCTA concluded it could no longer reflect a single
industry position on many key issues.

"It's hard to be a national voice when a major chunk of Quebec and
the West isn't there," says Michael Hennessy, CCTA president who adds
that the board will have an official vote in a couple of weeks, with
the doors closing likely by the end of the month.

"While it's a sad thing, we've been talking about the opportunities
in the future and I think, personally we see lots of them."

While at one time the association represented more than 75 carriers,
including the largest, Rogers Cable, it lost its second-biggest
member last fall when Shaw Communications, the western-based cable-
satellite-telecom giant, announced its resignation, citing "divergent
interests and differing strategic objectives."

MacDonald says the smaller cable companies will still pursue policy
and buying issues through a parallel business trade association
called the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance.

A new channel called Prise 2 is currently available for free for three months.
It is sort of
like a French DejaView or TV Land. On illico it can be found on Channel 98

Some people think it's a second channel, but it's just ONE CHANNEL.

Correction: it's on channel 95 and not 98. Today they reran the pilot of Wonder
Woman.
They also have Les Brilliants and Peau de Banane. Just when you thought you'd
never see
Yves Corbeil in a sitcom again.

Does Prise 2 have a website? Is any listings publication (TV Hebdo,
TV 7 Jours, Voila!, etc.) carrying their listings?

So far, they didn't carry the first season of "Sunset Beach," which
all NBC stations aired. When did they start carrying the show, during
the 1997-98 season? I doubt it.

They also never carried Santa Barbara which is what Susnset Beach replaced on
NBC.

All Burlington/Plattsburgh TV stations were stupid, except for WCAX-TV.

I'm impressed with the line-up. They carry a lot of shows that you can't find
elsewhere.
The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, Kojak, Charlie's Angles, the Addams Finally,
Quincy. The
drama/action packed Prise 2 can be a compliment to DejaView and TV Land, which
both
seem to be more sitcom oriented. That is if you don't mind French dubbing. Of
course, the
fact is that sitcoms don't translate very well.

Maybe it's the possibility when Fox 44 went on the air in '97, it
caused the networks to carry full schedules.
