Was Readit with John Robbins a TVOntario show? I liked Read On: Cover
to Cover as well...Teletales where that couple--one would draw and the
other one would tell the tale. Great Plains Network had a good show
called "Neighbors" that I dug. Ummm, I must say I really like Tony
Saletan. I liked Powerhouse...
Anyone remember that one show where some woman would walk around in
some museum/technological and come across weird devices? it kinda had
that readallaboutit type of feel at the beginning when the kids were
investigating the coach house.
I've seen most of these shows through KOCE 50 here in orange county,
california

Hey,
you are correct, there really hasn't been much action
lately. However, I will tell you my favorite TVO show.
It was definitely Today's Special! Loved that show! (I
also got to go to The Puppet Centre when I was in
grade 1 and got to see Muffy Mouse!):-) However, a
close second would HAVE to be Read All About it, I
used to love it just because Deneeden terrified me!
Anyway, let me know what shows you were interested
in...

Thanks!
Does anyone recall the name of the giraffe-camel-thing that lived in
the sky in Dr. Snuggles?
Also, does anyone know if it's available on tape/dvd?
Pretty much all I can remember is the theme song and the images of
all the characters...but a lot of the plot and names are stuck
somewhere in my subsonscious and I would love to get them out of
there!
Thanks!!
Hi all!
Great group! I'm a big fan of old TVO: Dr. Who, Dr. Snuggles, Read All
About it, Fables, etc.
I am looking for anyone who has copies of the British series The
Phoenix and the Carpet, for trade or sale.
You see, when I was very young, I saw the 1st episode. It ended on a
cliffhanger (ghosts were attacking a castle), and unfortunately my
family went on holiday the next day and I never saw the rest of the
series :(
That cliffhanger has played and replayed itself in my head all these
years, and I'm desperate to put it rest.
Any help greatly appreciated ;-)

little blue nose. Mind you, I did find him a bit sissy, and liked
his mouse/rat friend Hector a lot more.
I remember that I was never able to figure out if Zardip was a girl
or a boy - and how dumb the other kids must've thought him.
Good poll. Zardip also is my answer for which character you'd want
to beat up the most (tied with Jeremy).

Hey Anna,
I don't think Belle and Sebastian was a TVO show, maybe someone else can
remember if it was on TVO.

I have the complete set of Inside/Out videos to trade. I would love to have any of the following series (even individual episodes): Readalong, Mathmakers, or Today's Special. My other favorite shows (non TVO related) are Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
(especially older ones), The Letter People, and Thinkabout. If anyone is interested in trading, please send a message.
Thanks, Drew

I'm also interested in seeing ThinkAbout. I'm also interested in what price AIT quoted you. I'm not surprised, though, since they charge around $39 per episode (YIKES). I've tried contacting my local PBS station that used to air blocks of 70s and 80s educational programs back in the day, but have yet to get any response. I once did an internet search on where to get old educational programs and noticed some teacher libraries still carry them. And if you're a teacher in that area, you can get borrow the tape or have a copy mailed to you. Of course I'm not a teacher in any of the areas I found but maybe there's some creative
way around that. Some public libaries may still keep copies around as well. Otherwise as Daniel said, you'll need to find people who had the hindsight to tape these programs. Goodness, I wish I did!!!

Rick,
I would love to have a copy of Readalong. I know there are many episodes,
but just one to show my children would be wonderful.
What would you need from me to make the transfer?

Are you a collector of TVO shows, myself and my fiancée collect shows.

Hi Drew, and welcome to the group!
Other than Barbapapa (which can be found on VHS via ebay occasionally) most
of the other TVO programs are either impossible to find, or limited to those
few folks who were lucky enough to have VHS copies that have been duped to
VHS or DVD-R.
You are not alone, I'd love to have copies of Readalong and Read All About
it. I found a guy on ebay who is selling DVD-R copies of the latter, and his
prices are reasonable. If you keep checking ebay, who knows, you might luck
out!
Obtaining them from TV Ontario would yield the highest quality version, but
more people you have discovered the sticker shock that goes along with that.
I've heard they charge hundreds or even thousands for these services. How
much did they quote you?
I don't remember inside/out, maybe another group member might.

Hey everybody,
My name is Drew, and I live in Nashville, TN. I was excited to find
this group, as I am an addict of 70's and 80's Canadian public
television. (especially Today's Special and Thinkabout.) I have a
couple of questions for the group:
1. Is anyone familiar with the cartoon version of Inside/Out? I got
the complete set of videos, but it was the earliest version that was
not a cartoon. I've enjoyed watching them, but the cartoon is what I
remember.
2. Does anyone know how I could order the complete set of Thinkabout?
I contacted the Agency for Instructional Programming, but the price
they gave me was out of my price range.
Thanks,
Drew
Thanks Rick! Here's hoping!

Welcome to the group, Nick! I hope it will grow. When I saw Rick's webpage
for TVO, and all the messages he had received from folks who have fond
memories of the shows, I was inspired to start this group in the hopes that
we might have a place people could come and discuss their favorite shows,
episodes, and memories from TVO.
I myself am from Alabama in the USA, and of course when I was watching these
shows back in the seventies on PBS (I was just a little kid back then) I had
no idea this was a Canadian effort. I had knowledge of other countries, of
course, but when you are little, sometimes the world only exists inside your
hometown.
Readalong was my favorite show, and when it would come on, I was glued to
the TV set. Granted, my memories of Readalong are sparse, I seem to recall
that Boot had kind of a scratchy, street-smart voice, and that Pretty had
almost a "Jessica Rabbit" thing going on with hers...very sultry and
romantic; like Marilyn Monroe.
Granny seemed to be hard of hearing, the Explorer was always getting into
fixes that he should have seen coming a mile away, Mr. Bones sounded like
"Wolfman Jack", if you know who that is; and there was also this salesman
guy who was trying to sell you words.
A lot of that may be incorrect, as it has been well over twenty years since
I have seen any of this, but the memories are there.
There really is no television show on today that compares to Readalong's
methods of teaching literacy. Sesame Street will always be there, but
instead of trying to be on the good track SS has always been on, it seems
the TV producers think that shows like Teletubbies, Boo-Bah, and Barney are
what kids need to see and emulate.
I disagree. Teletubbies teach preschoolers to continue speaking in
baby-talk, Boo-Bah is like an acid trip, and Barney is just annoying.
Today, my kids (ages eight and nine) saw the photos of Boot and Pretty, as
well as some of the photos on Rick's website, and seemed intrigued by them.
They wanted to know if they could watch some of these shows. Such a shame
that they can't. I know my mystery-loving daughter would really get into
"Read All About It".

It is an honor and a pleasure to be a member of the TVO-kids group!
Ever since I started a webpage about Boot from Readalong, I have
gotten emails from all over the world.
Nick
Well, here goes...let's see if we can get some membership added to
the group. I want to thank Rick for offering to add the groups
address to his TVO message board; and I thank Nick for letting me use
his photos of Boot and Pretty for the home page.
If you guys have any ideas for the group, let me have it. I don't
know how many members we'll get, but at the very least we can help
people rekindle the memories. If you know of any other folks who
might want to join the group, feel free to spread the word. I try to
check my groups at least three times a week, so if I don't answer
right away, don't think I've vanished.
I think one issue that is going to come up more than any is "How can
I get a copy of this or that show?" How can we address that? I don't
have any copies of anything, but if you two know of any sources,
maybe you could post a link to them.
