Having re-read the original reviews and recent postings I slipped in my DVD copy
of this episode and watched it yesterday afternoon. All in all not a bad
episode. However, Kimble meets another in a long list of dysfunctional families.
I liked the mother who remained kind to Davey. The dad was sick and on death's
door? The brother was a total idiot. He must have had quite a bad reputation. I
base this on the exchange he had with the sheriff, played by Vaughn Taylor. The
sheriff was civil towards him but I think he didn't much care to be seen in his
company. I liked the remark about just having his police car cleaned when Frank
asked if he wanted him to go with him.
I was wondering why the family was so eager to blame Davey for the fire. Sure,
he was left in charge but were was he when the barn was set on fire. Surely, the
fire was investigated by an arson squad. Investigaters would have checked
Davey's clothes for signs of any accelerant or whatever else was used.
The brother was a sneak. I suppose he snuck back to burn the barn down to
discredit his older brother, Davey, so he would be left the whole ranch and
horse business. At the end of the episode he was going to get the business
alright, but not what he thought he would receive. I think that his going AWOL
and hiding the fact from everyone would not enable him to regain the trust of
his parents.
Kimble was able to use his bed side manner with Davey in the jail cell at the
opening of the story and once again during the train ride in the box car. He was
friendly and open as I think he would be with a child in his care noting that
Davey was much like a child after he had been drinking, sobered up and began
feeling sorry for himself.
Yes, the Lambert family was hard to like but I feel towards the end of the
episode some mall steps had been taken to start over and work together as a
family.
