WE ARE THE SIR DIRK BOGARDE e-group, affiliated with the Official Bogarde website, for the discussion of the performances and written works of Sir Dirk Bogarde, one of the most important stars of 20th century British cinema. He ruled British screens in the '50s as Rank's top star and Britain's biggest box office draw. For five years running fans voted him best actor, highlighted by Picturegoer's Annual Award for a record three years.
From the'60s on Bogarde became a major actor in European film. He daringly shed his matinee-idol image for more complex, challenging roles in Britain and abroad, working with acclaimed directors Joseph Losey, Visconti, Resnais, Cavani, Fassbinder and Tavernier.
Nominated for a BAFTA six times, Sir Dirk received two BAFTAs for Best British Actor: in 1963-THE SERVANT, in 1965-DARLING; a BFI Fellowship; and BAFTA's first Life Achievement Award. Honoured at Cannes-1983, Jury President in 1984.
Among his many awards: Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres;
Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France; Hon. D. Litt. the University of St. Andrews and University of Sussex; knighted in 1992.
In a successful 2nd career, he wrote 15 best-selling books (VOICES IN THE GARDEN also a film), poems, articles, intros, revised film scripts and reviews for The Telegraph, The Times (collected in FOR THE TIME BEING). He adapted and starred in MAY WE BORROW YOUR HUSBAND? 1986 TV.
Sir Dirk died peacefully at his London home 8 May 1999, above the title
