Ran a search for "Bay Area" in the Browncoats forum hoping to dig up
some tickets. :D Your post came up about a meet some few months back

BTW, the "Patay" is probably just a play on Patti, but in my native
language of Visaya (Filipino dialect), "patay" (pronounced 'pah-
tai') means "dead" or "corpse". Just a useless fact you probably
didn't need to know, but what they hey. ;-)

Anyhow, I just wanted to make a comment on the "give us reports"...

So. I make some killer brownies. Like, really amazing.
Not 420 brownies mind you. Just chocloholic heaven.
That said, I would bake a huge pan of these brownies
for any browncoat with an extra ticket to give me.

It would certainly be fun to go with the group to see HHGttG.
Alas, opening weekend is right out for me. My girlfriend's family's
visiting, and 2-4 of them will be staying with us, and we have a
(wonderful wine geek) party to go to on Saturday at her aunt and
uncle's place, and ... well, you get the picture. If we see HHGttG
that weekend at all, it will be with Lori's family.
I liked the suggestion of going on the 7th, some time after the
shindig. :) I suspect there would be a strong chance that it would
be a second viewing for me, but I doubt I'll be averse to that.
On the other hand, it'll probably suit more people to have the
group go on opening weekend, and that's fine. :) I won't miss out
on seeing it; believe me. =)

Hi Arielle -
I've been to several, and each one has been a little different. I
know some groups watch episodes together in the evenings, but our
group mostly meets during the day and hasn't really done much of that,
however our group is flexible and has been open to suggestions.
We've been meeting at Katie Bloom's in Campbell, and I'm really
getting to like their food, especially the Irish Breakfast. Often we
talk about upcoming Bay Area Sci-Fi events people might be interested
in, and we recently helped out the SF Browncoats with a FF/Serenity
fan table at WonderCon at the Moscone Center(did you go to that?)
ComicCon is coming up in San Diego in July, and I think some of our
group are planning on going. Also, I'd like to start talking about a
joint SF/SJ/Sacto shindig in August, and possibly organizing a trip to
go see Hitchhiker's Guide in SJ and hopefully see the Serenity trailer.
In general, and not to ramble too much, our group is not
overly-organized, and is open to lots of topics. Hope to meet you at
Katie's next month!

Well, I've only been to 2 of 'em, but basically we sit around, eat and
drink, and chat about whatever the heck we feel like chatting about.
:) Firefly fans are generally interesting and intelligent people, so
whether conversations are about Firefly, Joss, Sci-Fi, or whatever
else (which might be totally random and unrelated to any of those
topics), it's fun to hang out and chat.

I'm not a fan of subject-only messages. I'd personally
prefer that we
just reply normally to one of the reminders saying,
"I'll be there",
"I can't make it", or something (a lot nicer for those
of us with
threaded e-mail clients/services ... and I just have a
dislike of
using the subject line to convey the entire message).
Alternatively, if you'd like to formalize things a
bit, you could
create an evite each month [see
http://www.evite.com/]. It's possible
to create an invitation without specifically inviting
individuals, and
to forward the invitation to the list.

As for RSVPs, maybe we could each post a message to the list with
whether we will attend in the subject line, no body of text.
Hi all,
I've taken advantage of the Yahoo! Groups calendar feature. I have
added a repeating event (title: "Silicon Gulch Browncoats' Shindig")
which is in our group calendar for the first Saturday of every month
at 12:00 noon. Notifications will be automatically sent to the list 7
days in advance and 1 day in advance.
This seems like it quite handily replaces a significant amount of the
functionality that meetup.com provided (other than handling RSVPs).
I noticed that the calendar seems to think it's in the GMT time zone.
Patti? :) Can you fix that?

The whole "web beacon" thing is kind of ludicrous. :) It makes it
sound like it's some form of new, advanced technology. Web browsers
(unless it's exploiting some security hole in a specific browser
[which would pretty much have to be IE]) don't have any such feature.
It is probably (almost 100% certainly) just third-party cookies. That
is, a cookie which, rather than being stored/accessed by the page you
are visiting, is stored/accessed by an image or other content on the
page you are visiting which is sourced from a site other than the one
you are visiting.
E.g. You go to geocities.com, and it, e.g., has an image from
yahoo.com on it, so the server (yahoo.com) serving the image can
store/access a cookie on your machine. This is called a third-party
cookie gets around the fact that cookies are only accessible by the
site which stored them.
Many web browsers, in cookie preferences / security preferences, have
a way to disable third-party cookies while still allowing cookies from
the site you are visiting. I suggest using that feature.
I believe Yahoo! are just inventing new terminology to avoid letting
you know what their implementation is.
Ok, that's enough geekiness from me for one day.

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group
users around the net and see what you're doing and where you are going
similar to cookies. Yahoo is recording every website and every group
you visit.
Take a look at their updated privacy statement:
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy
About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will
see a link hat says web beacons. Click on the phrase web beacons. That
will bring you to a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network". In
this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link that
will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping. Once you have
clicked that link, you are exempted. Notice the "Success" message on
the top of the next page. Be careful because on that page there is a
"Cancel Opt-out" button that, if clicked, will *undo** the opt-out.
Feel free to forward this to other groups.\
