Hmmm, seems to work here... perhaps it is because you

Might be something to do with Rapidshare. One of the groups I used to check
regularly had a lot of Rapidshare stuff on it and now I can't get in anymore
so that might be blocked for whatever reason.

Hi!

I don't know if this one was already mentioned but I found it on
YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GONeqPxh4d4&feature=related

"badwx" has this to say:
"In 1969, Barry Gray composed and recorded what is arguably the best
music ever written for the opening credits of a TV series; Gerry
Anderson's UFO. The series was as awesome as it was short (1 season).
I thought it might be cool to see what Star Trek TOS's opening might
look like using that music."

Interesting combination.
Well, enjoy it!

Hi all,

I see that Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbirds" is scheduled to
be released on Blu-Ray disc in the UK:

   http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001C4QLA6

I'm rather surprised to see this released on Blu-Ray so
soon, although it's known that Thunderbirds, UFO, and
Space:1999 have been remastered in high-definition.

If these releases are going to be missing the tops/bottoms
of the image to make them widescreen, I think some purists
may pass on these releases, and stick with the full-frame
DVD releases. Those UFO DVDs look pretty good upscaled on
my new HDTV...

I wonder if the Blu-Ray version will be without the disastrous
"improvements" to the sound effects on the DVD release.
After years of watching Thunderbirds on near-worn out VHS (and before that,
repeats on B&W TV) the DVD image quality was glorious, but the sabotaged
sound effects made the episodes nearly unwatchable for me.

Hey, I know this badwx guy. He looks like me, talks like me, we have
the same birthday...and oh yeah, we married the same woman.

I suppose you could even say he is me. Or is it I am him.

Anyway, thanks for posting this. I had a blast putting this together,
and Barry Gray's music just seemed to fit it perfectly. I love the
original Star Trek TOS theme, but this match up just seemed to have
potential.

I hope y'all like it.

I'm not hopeful. Both UFO and Thunderbirds were shown in high definition
on "Family Room HD" in the USA, and they both had a distracting pseudo 5.1
soundtrack that was not nearly as good as the original mono soundtrack
(in my opinion). They were also both cropped top & bottom.

Yes, and in some ways the DVDs are better than the HDTV
broadcasts I've seen:

-- the DVD's feature the whole frame, so there is nothing
important cropped off on extreme closeups, nor is the
frame squished vertically during credit sequences.

-- the DVD's are in mono, so you don't have sound effects
jumping from one speaker to the other, like someone is
      playing with the balance knob.

-- the DVD's have more consistently excellent picture quality.
Some of the episodes in HDTV are excellent quality, while
others are merely mediocre and some are downright terrible.
(hopefully if these are ever released on Blu-Ray, the
mediocre and terrible ones will be redone).

When watching the HDTV versions, you definitely do see
minor things jump out at you that you've never noticed
before. Usually these things aren't that important, but
it's always surprising to notice something new in an
episode that you've previously seen dozens of times.

Isn't there a 40th Anniversary set of Thunderbirds out now from A&E in a slim
pack? Do these have the option of the original mono (not 5.1 travesty)
soundtracks? I'm in complete agreement about the audio being ruined on the
recent releases.
I actually enjoy watching my old Bandai Laserdisc versions more than the DVD
releases....

best,
KK

I think that when A&E reissues something, they just use the same discs as
before, and change the packaging. That's what happened with the Space:1999
anniversary edition.

By the way, here is the artwork for the upcoming Thunderbirds Blu-Ray disc:

Which they probably were...

Sound engineer thinking:

"Gotta look as though I'm doing something for this huge fee I'm charging.."

perhaps? <g>

OK, 'some people' may complain if a disc doesn't have an AC3

soundtrack, but it's beyond me why they don't simply include original

mono/stereo/whatever soundtracks as well, selectable by the viewer.

It's not as though it's a lot of extra work - they already have it as the

source for their meglomaniacal re-mixing!

The same applies to many DVDs (but not the UFO ones, of course.)

Cheers,

Yes. Thunderbirds is a '60s TV series, after all. I do think
that any benefit gained from an HD release is going to be
outweighed by the loss of image incurred by cropping.

I've been watching episodes of Stingray on my video iPod this
last week, while travelling abroad. I really don't think that
a high-definition transfer of a puppet show with cheap sets
is particularly desirable, quite honestly!

Thank you very much. Thanks to everyone. It means a lot that UFO
fans like this as much as Star Trek fans appear to.

When I put it together I had no intention of doing any "nods" to the
UFO open. But, I just couldn't resist the Kirk/Spock jump at the same
point in the music where the Moonbase Interceptor pilots jump into the
launch chute. And then of course, the very end with the explosion.

Barry Gray was a genius. The tempo and arrangement of that music just
screams "TV show open". They just don't make like that anymore.

Hi all,

I'm wondering, does anyone have any contact information
for the person who sells soundtrack CDs from various
Gerry Anderson shows at the San Diego Comic Con? I'm
assuming there is just one vendor, but that may be a
false assumption. I'm curious as to the history /
source material for their soundtrack for JOURNEY TO THE

that still doesn't explain where the music came
from...

Guessing most of you know of Martin Bower?
The model making genius that's built some brilliant, beautiful, not
to say downright iconic craft over the years, be it Space 1999,
Alien, Blakes 7, Doctor Who, Outland, Flash Gordon, the list goes on
and on.
As you'll see from the link below, this long in gestation project is
almost here.
Written totally by Martin - except for the Q&A questions you're
invited to send in - this run of magazines will build into a
collection of incredibly indepth articles, becoming the DEFINITVE
works on the subjects, in many cases using never seen before photos.
A good example is the Battlecruiser used in Space 1999's "The Last
Enemy" - most of the photos were uncovered by Martin during research
by Martin, photos he himself hadn't seen for 30-odd years, photos
taken from the negatives that he's had cleaned up from the negatives.
If you've ever felt cheated before that previous articles on Martin's
work never went into enough details, then this is what youve been
waiting for.

Issue 1 is on pre-order and ships soon, with issue 2 (Thunderbirds
Sidewinder, 1999's Hawk and original design Moonbus) on the horizon:

"SFM:uk is proud to announce that the first issue of the Martin Bower
penned Bowerhouse is now available through the SFM:uk website,
featuring three indepth article written by model making hero Martin
Bower.
Included are:
-Battlecruiser, as eventually seen in the Space 1999 episode Alpha
Child and The Last Enemy,
-The Meteor from StarGuard,
-Mars ATV

Also included are the answers to the "Ask Martin" requests run on the
SFM:uk website.

The publication is priced at £7.50 plus postage (UK: £0.70, Europe:
£1.34, USA/Australia: £2.17)

We are now taking orders and copies will be dispatched on 11th
August.

Order yours at: http://scifimodels.org.uk/phpWebsite...ge&PAGE_id=218

Best wishes
