That's a particularly rough part of London, so I might see if
there's a daytime performance.

Last weekend, I watched the first disk of "Stingray". I can honestly say
that I was less than impressed by it. I definitely enjoyed Fireball XL5 much
more, but was glad to see Lois Maxwell get some work. Marina gives me the
heebee geebees.

This weekend, I am watching "Captain Scarlett and the Mysterons." The two
episodes so far have been far superior in quality. Interestingly, these were
made in 1967, two years before UFO. There is a great deal of UFO-esque
influence in this series; from the titles, to the music, to the voice of Ed
Bishop. Gotta love that Cary Grant impersonation played on Captain Scarlett,
though.

I've never seen either of these series and have others in my Netflix queue.
Great to get to see all that I missed those many decades ago.

Bob

I think they could have expanded on the idea of duplicating
SHADO personel by having them infiltrate SHADO itself, substituting
the fakes for the real ones, rather than just appearing on the
monitors. We never got to see Anderson again, did he leave in a huff
after all that interrogation or did he turn into an adict after
having all that serum pumped into him.
It would have been good having two Colonel Lakes though.

The idea was agood one, just badly realised. The scene with the cassette recorder
and Alien dopplegangers was quite frankly awful.
They should have dropped this scene completely, gone with the idea that the dome
was something to do with negating radar,by disrupting weather.
The dopplegangers would have been a side effect of psychic
fields created by the power source in and around the dome.
This concept could have been explored the sort of concepts seen in Mindbender. As
for the battle at the end...ok but why did,nt they get Derek to do another Ten
Lives sequence...they got a bit cheap with this one.And I agree with everyone
else..SKY 1 destroy second wave of UFO'S.It's great how earnestly he sets about
his task, surely the script editor/director should have realised how stupid this
looked and sounded.Mind you,it's a really funny scene.
Can't wait to see Kevin's addition to his set of excellent of cartoon's on this
one.
Most definitely the worst episode.Unfortunate really because it could have been
much better with a more imaginative approach.

Actually, Christian, the real reason is even crazier than the one you
came up with. At the last Fanderson Con I found out an interesting
tidbit about their editing process: they only did one take per
scene! If they screwed it up (for any of a host of reasons) they
were stuck with it in the final mix. Is that insane or what?!?!?
I've wondered a lot since I learned this whether Gerry thought he was
still working with puppets! Anyway, it's probably just a case of the
shots being filmed at different times and no one bothering to make
sure that the props were the same.
Yours,
Denise

I agree that Captain Scarlet was a significant influence on UFO,
especially in the essential premise of an elitel organisation
defending Earth from aliens.

As for Cary Grant, that's pretty well Francis Matthews' normal
speaking voice! It is similar though, admittedly.

After watching the entire first disk of Captain Scarlet this past
weekend, I just kept getting struck with all the similarities there
are between it and UFO. Some segments of music were so close, there
would be a lawsuit if composed by others. Three Angels for "immediate
launch", three moonbase interceptors. Superstreamlined cars opposed
with mid-1960s gas hogs. Century 21 logo.

Even though Captain Scarlet himself is pretty much a boob and could
not have survived in Spectrum without the superior intellect of
Captain Blue (Edward Bishop), this is, by far, my favorite GA
Supermarionation series (although I am very partial to Fireball XL5
for nostalgic reasons).

Yes, and that description matches the description
of Fanderson's UFO soundtrack CD, except that the
price is much less. On the Space:1999 mailing
list, someone pointed out that this company has
a reputation for selling bootleg CDs...

Some of the music in UFO is IDENTICAL to that in Captain Scarlet,
as the music is simply reused (UFO also reuses music from several
other previous Anderson series). Also, it's been awhile since I've
watched Captain Scarlet, but I think a lot of the sound effects
are the same.

Also, wait til you get to one of the last episodes that has some
spinning UFOs in it!

I think some of you could be jumping to conclusions as I believe this
is NOT a bootleg, but rather an advance notification of the Silva
Screen version of the Soundtrack. This company have perhaps unwisely
chosen to use to the image of the Fanderson CD in lieu of the
currently unavailable artwork for Silva Screen.

I think that this being the Silva Screen UFO CD is the most unlikely
scenario I can think of! Silva Screen has already announced their
longterm plans for Anderson soundtrack CDs, and they include
Captain Scarlet, Space:1999 Year One, and Thunderbirds Volume 2.
This means that UFO would be at least a year away. The CD listed
here says it will be released in late 2003.

Also, there's no way that Silva Screen is going to issue a 24 page
booklet with their UFO CD, and it seems unlikely that they will
even release a double CD. My feeling is that this is either
an original Fanderson CD, or a bootleg. Either way they shouldn't
be selling it.

Why not stop at a hundred then? But before you do any copying, you had better
check to make sure that they aren't under alien programing. Of course, as noted,
Henderson wouldn't need any programing.

I'm really looking forward to watching more of Captain Scarlet. I'll
stick Stingray farther down my Netflix queue.

Interestingly, Marc, you're right. There are moments of identicality
(is that really a word?). However, there are some tracks that are
simply just so close. It was like Gerry said to Barry during UFO
preproduction, "Remember that transition music you played in Captain
Scarlet? Well do it with a little more punch."

Amazing.

I swear that, in one scene on a submarine when the crew is using a
laser to torch through a steel door, the sound effect is the same as
the laser that Goldfinger used to nearly emasculate James Bond.

Also, I mentioned previously that I heard the UFO closing music on
Fireball XL5. Pretty wicked stuff for the very early 60s.
