New challenges result in luxury rewards, as the castaways are closer
than ever to being rescued in a two-hour episode of the new reality
series "THE REAL GILLIGAN'S ISLAND" on TBS.

In last week's episodes, the Gingers dove for pearls and the
Gilligans spun out trying to find their sea legs. Ginger Rachel
Hunter and Gilligan Chris won spots in the final cast.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Ivan wreaked havoc on the island and the
castaways were forced to temporarily evacuate to safety.

In a two-hour episode on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), the
castaways return to their island life after waiting out the
tempestuous storm on higher ground. The aftermath not only takes a
toll on their living environment, but also on their psyche, and they
are challenged to step up their game when a new twist is revealed.

The close quarters and quirky personalities of the final seven
continue to create drama as well as comic moments as the castaways
compete for rewards, strategic advantage and their eventual rescue
from the island.

The special two-hour series finale on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.
(ET/PT) will reveal which castaway will be dramatically rescued from

Sometimes I'll be riding my bike through Griffith Park or driving
along the coast and get a spark of inspiration, totally out of the
blue. I think it's because there's so much creative energy in the
air here in the entertainment capital of the world.

Take, for example, the DreamWorks SKG release "Surviving Christmas,"
starring Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini, who played mob boss Tony
Soprano on HBO. Do you have any idea how much creativity it must
have taken for SKG (Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen) to talk
themselves into launching that dud?

Confession: I didn't see the movie, because "Surviving Christmas"
didn't survive Thanksgiving. I saw the trailer, however, and fought
the temptation to set myself ablaze in the theater. If Tony Soprano
had paid $9 to see "Surviving Christmas," all the people associated
with the movie would have had their legs broken.

But I believe it's wrong for the media to focus on Hollywood's flops
when the industry produces so much fare it can be genuinely proud
of. So today I'd like to talk about next week's TBS premiere of "The
Real Gilligan's Island."

What is it, exactly? Are they telling me I've burned countless hours
watching a fake "Gilligan's Island"?

I had those questions, and more, when I started seeing full-page ads
for the new show in The Times, and let me tell you something about
full-page ads in The Times. I buy what they're selling because
they're paying my salary.

When a group called Exodus took out a full-page ad saying it could
cure homosexuality, I called to see what else they could cure and
gave them a whole column of free publicity.

So I'm definitely going to watch "The Real Gilligan's Island," which
has a website that answered all my questions. Turns out this is yet
another great American reality show, just to tick off whatever's
left of the Taliban.

The setup is that two SS Minnows are shipwrecked on a deserted
island, and matching characters from each boat compete for supremacy.

Hooray for Hollywood!

In other words, two Gilligans go at each other for the chance to be
smacked in the head by two Skippers, or something like that, so we
can all grow in our appreciation of the arts.

I can see this working if, instead of eating maggots as they do on
other reality shows, the Gingers and Professors and Thurston Howells
begin snacking on one another and then turn their appetites on the
show's creators.

And who are those creators?

The show's website fills us in.

"The producers of 'Gilligan's Island' are teaming with the producers
of 'The Bachelor' and 'The Bachelorette' to bring you 'The Real
Gilligan's Island.' "

Hollywood's version of the Algonquin Round Table.

While perusing the "Gilligan" website, I came upon a potentially
life-changing opportunity. It turns out that although they've
already booked both Minnows with a full cast, there could still be
an opening or two.

From the website:

"So if you're the perfect Gilligan, Skipper, Thurston or Lovey
Howell, Ginger Grant, Mary Ann, or the Professor (just what was his
name, anyway?), fill out the application and mail it in, along with
a video of yourself telling us why you'd make a great castaway."

I immediately called the Casting Hotline at (888) 634-4550.

"You have not missed the boat," said a recording, instructing
callers to fill out applications on the show's website. "The
deadline has passed, but we are still accepting taped submissions."

I've got experience, you know. In the interest of anthropology, I
stood in a long line and tried out for Donald Trump's "The
Apprentice." When I asked another contestant why she was there, she
said she wanted to make a difference.

Another contestant told me he had been a military interrogator,
trying to squeeze information out of prisoners at Guantanamo. They
should have threatened inmates with a Ben Affleck Film Festival.

Trump himself gave me a wink after I answered questions, and his
people said they'd call to let me know if I was in.

It was their loss, and besides, I'd rather develop my craft on a
fresh and challenging project like "The Real Gilligan's Island."

"Are you a fan of the original 'Gilligan's Island' series?" asks the
Gilligan questionnaire.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.

"What would you miss most if you were stranded on a deserted island?"

The No. 3 platter at Los Tacos on Santa Monica Boulevard.

"What type of people would you NOT want to share the island with?"

Selfish people.

"What would be your favorite part of being stranded on a deserted
island?"

Ginger and Mary Ann.

"Have you ever had a restraining order issued against you?"

Not that I can recall.

"Are you a legal resident of the United States?"

What are you implying?

"What fears do you have about being on 'The Real Gilligan's Island'?"

Being typecast as a coconut-headed nitwit. Sooner or later someone
in this town is going to make "The Real Mr. Ed," and I don't want
anyone to think I can't keep growing as an artist, no matter how
high Hollywood raises the bar.

TV Show News: TBS's The Real Gilligan's Island Cast List Revealed

The Real Gilligan's Island, which was cast from a nationwide search,
features two real-life skippers, two first mates, two millionaire
couples, two movie stars, two Midwest farm girls and two professors.

The castaways must work together, as the original castaways did in
the 1960s sitcom, to get off the island. Each of the castaways
competes against his/her character counterpart for a spot in the
final cast of seven characters.

The Gingers

Rachel Hunter is an actress and model originally from New Zealand.
She has starred in such movies as Best Actress, Rock Star, Sydney
and MacArthur Park. She is an international cover model, having
posed for Sports Illustrated, Playboy and numerous other
publications worldwide. She has starred in several music videos,
including "Stacey's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne.

Nicole Eggert is an actress from Los Angeles. She has been acting
since age 5 and most notably starred as a blonde beauty on Baywatch
for several years. She also starred in the sitcom Charles in Charge
and has had recurring roles in such shows as Boy Meets World,
Clueless, Who's the Boss and T.J. Hooker. She is featured on the
cover of Sugar Ray's album Lemonade and Brownies. Her feature film
credits include Rich and Famous and Omega Syndrome.

The Gilligans

Chris O'Malley is 20 years old and works at a marina while attending
the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Friends in his hometown
of Boston have called him Gilligan for years because of his clumsy,
easygoing and accident-prone nature. He once crashed a million-
dollar boat into another million-dollar boat because he was
distracted by a pretty girl.

Mark Groesbeck, a.k.a. "Gooner," is 31 years old from Weedsport,
N.Y. and is the ultimate goofball. Standing 6'7" tall, he sees the
humor in everything and does not take life too seriously. He enjoys
spending time training his dog and is very proud of finding a wife
who actually puts up with him.

The Mary Anns

Kate Koth is a 21-year-old farm girl from Manchester, Missouri. Her
mom, Janet Koth, of Survivor 6: Amazon, taught her how to make
coconut cream pies from scratch. She loves nature and being
adventurous. She is in the "Have You Seen This Girl?" section of the
December issue of Maxim magazine.

Amanda Dodson is a 21-year-old farm girl from Elsmore, Kansas. She
is a college student and enjoys herding cattle, fishing, attending
rodeos and baking in her spare time. She is an animal lover and has
a pet cow. She has won county fair awards for horseback riding,
baking, modeling and ceramics.

The Professors

Pat Abbott is a 64-year-old geology professor at San Diego State
University. He has a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Texas.
He also makes videos about earth science, frequently appears on
newscasts as an expert on natural disasters and lectures on cruise
ships. He enjoys athletics and traveling. As a historian of the
earth and humanity, science is not only his career but also his
continuous life passion.

Eric Anderson is a 36-year-old sociology professor at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook. He has four degrees, has
authored four books and is an avid reader, writer and researcher. He
prides himself on being a logical thinker, broadly intellectual, a
problem solver, well-versed in earth science, as well as very
handsome. He can be seen in the December issue of The Advocate, due
out Nov. 23.

The Millionaires and Their Wives

Glenn and Mindy Stearns are 40 and 35 years old, respectively, and
live in the Los Angeles area. Glenn owns 26 companies and is
resourceful in spending and making money. Mindy is a television
personality who previously co-hosted "DVD Weekend" on KTLA's News at
10 and was a former correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. Their
net worth is over $500 million.

Bill and Donna Beaven are 47 and 45 years old, respectively, and
hail from Kentucky. They own three companies in the fields of
flooring supply distribution, real estate and recycling. They enjoy
offshore powerboat racing and playing volleyball. Donna sees herself
as an extravagant, competitive, loud and opinionated woman who
enjoys bubble baths and jewelry. Their net worth is around $2
million.

The Skippers

Bob Fahey is a 52-year-old Plum Island, Mass., resident. He has been
a skipper for 30 years and owns a small business. He is not terribly
concerned with getting off the island, because he enjoys secluded
tropical settings.

Jim Murray is a 55-year-old Massachusetts native who has spent time
as a captain and first mate. Formerly in the US Navy, he has a vast
knowledge of the mechanics and construction of boats. He is a
natural leader and owns a stonemason business.

Many of the challenges that the contestants will face are modeled
after some of the situations that occurred in the original series,
such as building a seaworthy raft or knocking coconuts out of trees
to get the milk. Other challenges include the millionaire couple
eating a gourmet meal of mysterious island items and the first mate
proving he has "sea legs." As with any reality series, there will,
of course, be a number of surprises thrown at both the contestants
and viewers.

THE REAL GILLIGAN'S ISLAND is produced for TBS by Telepictures
Productions in association with Next Entertainment. Warner Bros.
International Television Distribution will be selling the
international format rights to the series, as they have for
Telepictures Productions/Next Entertainment's The Bachelor.
