Well, on this date of Friday, December 31, 1993, just fifteen years ago, a final airing of a network game show episode repeat each happened on the NBC and CBS television networks. After that occurrence, the titles in question to mentioned below would not be seen again on the over-the-air broadcast networks, but the latter could still be seen in reruns eventually on cable.
At NBC-TV during the mid-morning hours, the last Classic Concentration repeat airing, which was an episode from early in its former network run, was shown. The Alex Trebek-hosted edition had been in reruns for two years previously (after a brief hiatus on the network's daytime schedule), with its last actual first-run episode aired on Friday, September 20, 1991.
No other complete episode from any of the past versions of Concentration has been seen on TV since that time, and NBC has resisted in its controlling power to have the program revived with new episodes or broadcast in repeats elsewhere (including on cable networks such as GSN). Even though Mark Goodson Productions was given the license to produce new episodes of Concentration post-1973, NBC is still the copyright and trademark holder to its game format.
While at CBS-TV and later at 2:00pm Eastern, that network aired the *Tuesday* episode of The New $25,000 Pyramid from it original January 1983 airing featuring Lynn Redgrave and Billy Crystal. The previous week on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24, 1993, CBS aired the *Monday* episode from that same week with the same celebrities.
Ironically, this happened at the same time that the USA cable network was airing repeats of the CBS $25,000 and syndicated $100,000 versions on their schedule during the weekday afternoons. So, an avid fan of the program would get an extra *serving* of a vintage Pyramid episode on that day, but seen in full time (and perhaps for the last time ever) on one of the broadcast networks.
And with that I say, now please enjoy today's (Wednesday 12/31/2008) nine-hour $100,000 Pyramid marathon on GSN, if you are planning to watch it or record them for playback later. The episodes that are being shown between 9:00am Eastern/Pacific and 6:00pm Eastern/Pacific are a mixed assortment of shows from the 1985-88 version hosted by Dick Clark.
Happy New Year of 2009!!!
Sincerely,
William A. Padron
